Bengaluru : In a major development, Bengaluru-based diagnostic service provider, Manipal HealthMap, has acquired a 100% stake in Hyderabad-based Medcis PathLabs. Under its parent brand Manipal TRUtest, Manipal HealthMap expands its footprint with 23 additional centers which take the total number to 100+ centers across 16 states, strengthening its position as a major integrated diagnostic services brand. Manipal HealthMap had bought an 84% stake in Medcis Pathlabs in April 2022 by paying Rs 100 crore in an all-cash transaction. In their most recent transaction, they have secured the remaining 16% stake.

Medcis Pathlabs, with its headquarters in Hyderabad, presently has 23 laboratories spread across the country. The central laboratory in Hyderabad holds NABL accreditation and specializes in Molecular, Cytogenetics, Histopathology, and Microbiology. The remaining labs offer comprehensive services for Biochemistry, Haematology, and Immunology tests.

237 Citizens Participated in the Nagpur Edition of the Global ‘walk for Freedom’ to Raise Awareness About Human Trafficking

They joined thousands of  others across 100 other locations in India and 500+ locations in 50 countries, on the world’s largest simultaneous Walk against modern-day slavery.

237 citizens from colleges, government entities and NGOs participated in the Walk for Freedom to raise awareness about human trafficking at Nagpur this morning.

The Walk was declared open by Smt. Aswathi Dorje, Jt. CP, Nagpur, Shri. Sachin Patil, Secretary, District Legal Services Authority and Smt. Lata Deshmukh, Secretary, Matru Sewa. Speaking on the occasion, Smt. Dorje said, “The Youth need to become the ears and eyes of the Police.”

At the start of the Walk participants in Nagpur and across the nation took a pledge to do everything possible within their means to help end trafficking in their lifetimes. They then walked single file holding placards with information and statistics about human trafficking starting from and returning to Lal Bahadur Shastri School, Nagpur via public roads in the vicinity. The Walk was a completely silent Walk in solidarity with voiceless victims of human trafficking.

This was Nagpur’s first year participating in the Walk for Freedom, which was led by Yuva Rural in partnership with D. N. C College, Nagpur, Nikalas Mahila Mahavidyalay, Nagpur, Purushottam Thote College of Social Work, Nagpur, Annasaheb Gendewar College, Nagpur, Matru Sewa Sangh Institute of Social Work, Nagpur, Ramkrishna Wagh College, Nagpur, L.A.D College, Nagpur and Y. C. C. E. College, Nagpur.

49.6 million people are caught in various forms of modern-day slavery globally, including exploitation for sex, labour, organs, baby selling, forced marriages and domestic servitude, reports the International Labour Organisation (2022). This means that 1 in every 150 people globally are enslaved. Here in India, 8 children were trafficked every day in 2021 according to the Crime in India Report, National Crime Records Bureau (2021). In Maharashtra’s Osmanabad district, 11 daily-wage labourers were held captive, beaten, and exploited to work 12 hours per day – all without any compensation, as recently as June 2023. They were initially contracted to dig wells but subsequently trapped in this bonded labour. In addition, they were given only one meal a day, drugged and chained so that they couldn’t escape. They were rescued by the intervention of police authorities. (BBC, Deccan Herald)

Nagpur : American Oncology Institute (AOI) one of the largest cancer chain hospitals in South Asia launched of one of the largest Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) programs in India, further solidifying its commitment to providing world-class healthcare services.The program has expanded to cities like Nagpur, Vijayawada, Hyderabad, and Imphal, aiming to meet the growing demand for specialized BMT services.

Blood cancers constitute 8.2% of all cancers, and in India, its incidence is 5.5 cases per 1 lakh population per year. About 80,000 new blood cancer cases are detected per year, and one new blood cancer is reported every 7 seconds in India. The need for Bone Marrow Transplant programs in India has never been more critical. New Research: Snacking on Almonds Can Support Weight Management

India: Two new studies build on the large body of scientific evidence suggesting that almonds can improve diet quality and aid in weight management. They may also support weight loss as part of a reduced-calorie diet among adults with overweight or obesity.

The first study 1 , published in Obesity and funded by the Almond Board of California, tracked 140 Australians aged 25-65 years with overweight or obesity for nine months. For the first three months of the study, the participants reduced their daily calories by 30% through either a nut-free or almond- enriched diet (with almonds providing 15% of their daily calorie needs, which is approximately 1.0-1.76 ounces/30-50 g). On both diets, participants lost an average of 15 pounds (7 kg) and improved their lean body mass after three months. Moreover, they continued to lose weight, about 2 pounds (approximately 1 kg), during the subsequent six months.

“Sustaining weight loss after a weight management program can be challenging, with many people gaining weight back at the end of the calorie restriction phase of their program,” said Dr. Alison Coates, Professor of Human Nutrition and Director of the Alliance for Research in Exercise, Nutrition, and Activity at the University of South Australia. “This study showed that adding almonds to a weight management eating plan can not only promote meaningful weight loss but also offer a healthy and sustainable dietary addition.”

Participants who ate almonds also saw improvements in some lipoprotein subfractions (the different types of lipoproteins that carry cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood), which may reduce cardiovascular risks. Scientific evidence suggests but does not prove that eating 1.5 ounces per day of most nuts, as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, may reduce the risk of heart disease. Future research should investigate different doses of almonds and test people with additional heart disease and diabetes risk factors, as the results are not generalizable to populations with chronic diseases.

The second study was a 12-month study 2 , published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition and also funded by the Almond Board of California, which found that almonds, when eaten long term as a snack, can improve overall diet quality without causing weight gain among healthy non-obese, habitual snacking adults in New Zealand. Half of the 136 participants were assigned to eat either 1.5 ounces (43 g) of almonds or 10% of their daily calorie needs (whichever was greater) while the remaining participants in the control group consumed a calorie-matched high-carbohydrate snack. Participants in the almond group consumed significantly more protein, polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats, fiber, vitamin E, calcium, copper, magnesium, phosphorous, and zinc, and less carbohydrates and sugar than the control group.

There were no statistically significant weight changes or changes in lipids during the study in either group, suggesting almonds did not cause weight gain. Women in the almond group did not have a statistically significant change in visceral fat, but men had a statistically significant increase in visceral fat compared to the biscuit group. This finding has not been observed in previous studies, but it is important to note that this intervention was conducted during the COVID-19 lockdown, which may have affected eating habits and exercise levels. The participants were people at a normal weight or overweight so results may not be generalizable to other populations such as those with obesity.

Ritika Samaddar, Regional Head-Dietetics, Max Healthcare – Delhi says, “The Brown study reveals that choosing almonds over biscuits for a year not only results in significantly higher intakes of essential nutrients like protein, fiber, vitamins, and minerals but also a healthier fat profile. The almond group enjoyed the benefits of higher monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats while reducing their carbohydrate and sugar intake. This finding underscores the nutritional advantages of incorporating almonds into your diet for long-term well-being. When consumed mindfully as part of a well-rounded diet, almonds can contribute to a sense of fullness, improved dietary quality, and better overall health, making them a smart choice for those striving to achieve and maintain a healthy weight. In the Coates study on restricted diets, there is a significant and very similar weight loss in both the groups (one consuming almonds enriched diet-AED and other on nut free diet-NFT) but there is a difference between the groups in the macronutrient levels , specifically higher monounsaturated fatty acid and polyunsaturated fatty acid intake in the AED group compared with the NFD group, as well as higher α- tocopherol ( vitamin E). This defines the statistically significant changes in the highly atherogenic very small TRL-P and small LDL-P following the AED, which can lead to improved cardio- metabolic health in
the longer term.”

Latest survey by YouGov shows that Almonds have been found beneficial as part of a healthy diet of people battling PCOS, Type-2 Diabetes, Hypertension

INDIA: Over the past few decades, there has been a significant increase in lifestyle-related health issues. A large part of this problem is due to changes in our lifestyles, such as decreased physical activity, unhealthy diets, increased stress, and inadequate sleep. These changes have resulted in an increase in chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension and certain types of cancer. While modern medical advancements have enabled us to better manage and treat these conditions, prevention through lifestyle changes remains an effective way to reduce the burden of lifestyle-related diseases. It is important to prioritize healthy habits and make positive lifestyle changes to improve our overall health and wellbeing.

In a recent YouGov survey conducted by the Almond Board of California between 24th January – 6th February 2023, it was found that most urban cities in India reported a rise in lifestyle-related health issues such as obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease. While the survey highlighted the growing health concerns in India, it also revealed some of the key strategies followed by them to fight these health problems like eating a well-balanced diet, exercising, and eating healthy snacks.

A noteworthy mention in the healthy snacking category was almonds. In the survey, almonds were found to be most preferred healthy snacking option owing to its strong nutritional profile, especially high presence of protein and fiber, and its various health benefits. A fair section of the respondents associated almonds with being the good for heart health, Type 2 diabetes, PCOS amongst other health conditions.

Highlights of the Survey

  • 85% of those who were diagnosed with PCOS, Diabetes and Hypertension have started consuming Almonds regularly for better health.
  • Among different nuts/dry fruits, around 70% see Almonds as a good source of nutrition, a natural supplement and as a good source of protein and energy.
  • 78% respondents say that Almonds makes them feel healthy and boosts their energy as well.
  • Over 50% people prefer Almonds as a snack for people managing weight, blood sugar levels and heart health.
  • 1 in 3 urban Indians identify a diet with nuts like almonds as part of a healthy diet, even among those who currently don’t manage a lifestyle disease for self or family.

Intensity of consuming snacks was found to be stronger in the North (41%), West (42%) and East (42%), in comparison to the South (36%), where fewer people say that they consume snacks multiple times a day. When it comes to healthy snacks, 25% urban Indians spontaneously recall nuts/dry fruits. This awareness was significantly higher in the South (32%) vs cities like Delhi NCR, Lucknow, Ludhiana (21%), West (18%) and East (20%). West and South are more likely to demand for a snack that has no artificial preservatives. When focusing on eating patterns, it was noted that more than half of the respondents consume Almonds every day this was seen to be higher among those from the North and West. Additionally, more respondents from West (82%) consume almonds regularly as compared to cities like Delhi NCR, Lucknow, Ludhiana (76%) and East (74%). The quantitative survey was done amongst a sample size of over 4000 respondents in cities including Delhi, Lucknow, Ludhiana, Jaipur, Indore, Kolkata, Bhubaneswar, Mumbai, Ahmadabad, Pune, Bangalore, Coimbatore, Hyderabad, Kochi, and Chennai.

 

Commenting on the results of the survey, Ritika Samaddar, Regional Head – Dietetics, Max Healthcare – Delhi, “Maintaining a healthy diet is crucial for overall health and wellbeing and this survey is a testament to that fact. A balanced diet provides essential nutrients and energy that our bodies need to function properly, including carbohydrates, proteins, healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals. One food that has gained attention for its health benefits is almonds. Almonds are a nutrient-dense food that provides an abundance of essential vitamins and minerals, including vitamin E, magnesium, and potassium. They are also a healthy source of healthy fats, fiber, and protein. Regular consumption of almonds has been associated with various health benefits, such as reducing the risk of heart disease, improving blood sugar control, and promoting weight management.”

Mumbai: – Pyramid Technoplast Limited, an industrial packaging company known for its expertise in manufacturing polymer-based molded products is planning to raise up to Rs. 153.05 crore from its public issue to fund its growth plans. The company plans to use issue proceeds for repayment of outstanding borrowings, funding working capital requirements, and general corporate purposes. The public issue will open for subscription on August 18 and will close on August 22, 2023. The company’s shares will be listed on the BSE & NSE. The Book Running Lead Managers to the Offer are PNB Investment Services Limited and First Overseas Capital Limited. The Registrar to the Offer is Bigshare Services Private Limited.

The initial public offering of up to 92.20 lakh equity shares of face value Rs. 10 each comprises of fresh issue of up to 55 lakh equity shares and an offer for sale of up to 37.20 lakh equity shares by the promoter group – Credence Financial Consultancy LLP. The company has a fixed price band of Rs. 151-166 per equity share for the public issue. The company plans to raise up to Rs. 153.05 crore from the public issue at the higher price band of Rs. 166 per share. The minimum lot size for the application is 90 shares and multiple thereof. Retail investor and HNI quota for the IPO is kept at not less than 50% and 20% of the issue respectively while QIB quota is kept at a maximum of 30% of the issue.

The offer includes a fresh issue aggregating Rs. 91.30 crore and an offer for sale by the Selling Shareholder aggregating Rs. 61.75 crore on upper band price through the Offer.

In an impassioned address at the centenary celebration of Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University, the Vice-President of India, Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar, called upon citizens to initiate a Jan Andolan (people’s movement) to ensure that elected representatives fulfill their constitutional duties diligently. Nagpur: Distressed by the proposed imposition of 28% GST on online gaming, bringing them on par with casinos and horse racing, online gamers from across the state of Maharashtra have joined gamers from other cities under the banner of ‘Indian Gamers United’ to demand its reversal.

Several gamers assembled at RBI Square, Nagpur Today, and conducted a peaceful demonstration, appealing to the policymakers for a more tax-friendly online gaming regime. These gamers were carrying banners and placards and raised slogans drawing the attention of the policymakers to support them.

These gamers are concerned that online games are fast emerging as an option for young people to use their gaming skills to earn money in their free time and become part of the gig economy. Now, an unviable rate of GST at the rate of 28% on online games will kill this growing industry untimely, sending this growing tribe of online gamers into a vacuum.

The 50th GST Council meeting held on 11th July 2023 proposed the imposition of a 28% GST on online gaming, along with casinos and horse racing at full face value. Under the new regime a levy of 28% GST will be made on the total value of the consideration received in online gaming, including the entry fee. In this sweeping decision, the council has also put an end to the debate on “games of skill or chance, by deciding to treat all games at par. This is a major deviation from the currently prevailing tax regime on online gaming.

Currently, online gaming companies pay the government a GST of 18 percent levied on the Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR) or the platform fee. The currently prevailing GST regime also differentiates online games based on skills versus chance, something which is also being supported by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEITY) in their draft regulation for the industry. Besides this, a TDS of 30 percent is deducted from the winnings. Online gamers and poker players did not have any additional impact of GST on the value of bets placed by them, except for the platform fee collected by the online gaming company, till now.

With the introduction of the new GST amendments, a gamer will have to pay 28 percent GST on the amount deposited to play the game. Besides this, he will have to pay the platform fee and bear 30 percent TDS on net winnings. The high tax rate will make it more expensive for players to participate in online gaming. This could lead to players seeking out offshore or illegitimate platforms that do not charge GST, or that charge a lower rate.

India’s gaming industry is expected to become a $5 billion industry by 2025, growing at a compounded annual growth rate of 28-30 percent. The real-money gaming segment generated over ₹10,000 crore in revenue in 2022. The proposed GST rate is likely to have a major adverse impact on these figures.

~The 4th phase will offer opportunities for volunteers to experience mangroves through curated educational visits and more

Godrej & Boyce, the flagship company of the Godrej Group, in collaboration with WWF-India (Worldwide Fund for Nature-India) today announced the Phase-4 of their “Magical Mangroves” conservation awareness campaign. First launched in 2020, the volunteer-driven campaign trained more than 200 volunteers Mangrove Ambassadors who have helped sensitise over 27000+citizens across the 7 coastal states of India. Additionally, the campaign has reached millions of Indians through thematic social media posts in the last three years. This campaign’s key features are capacity building of Volunteers, outreach and Awareness through the trained Volunteers, knowledge building through Expert Talks, competitions and a robust social media campaign.

The Magical Mangroves programme which runs in collaboration between WWF-India and Godrej & Boyce, urges people to volunteer to spread awareness for the protection and preservation of mangrove forests, which are imperative for the survival of communities living across the coastal belt.

Building upon the success of the previous editions, the organisations have curated the new phase to encourage volunteers including students to take this programme forward. In Phase 4, the programme covers 7 coastal states of India – Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh& Telangana, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Gujarat. Moreover, the programme is segmented into three key components – Skilling, Awareness, and Action. A new batch of 90+ Mangrove Ambassadors from all backgrounds will receive comprehensive training which will equip them to lead informative sessions and promote the importance of mangrove habitats. For the first time since the lockdown, the campaign will witness an amplified impact through face-to-face sessions with schools, colleges, and the general public.

Speaking about the significance of the Magical Mangroves campaign, Mr Jamshyd Godrej, Chairman & Managing Director Godrej & Boyce remarked “We have been working together with WWF-India for many years to promote the conservation of mangroves. The outreach sessions planned as a part of the campaign are expected to engage close to 21,000 students and citizens across the 7 coastal states.  A key feature of the new phase is the introduction of Mangrove Trails – a practical, hands-on experience for select volunteers to learn about the magnificent mangrove habitats. Mangrove Trails is intended to inspire action for the conservation of the nation’s rich biodiversity.

Speaking about education and awareness as critical elements for conserving biodiversity Mr. Ravi Singh, CEO of, WWF-India addedWWF-India works in multiple mangrove habitats, including the magnificent Sundarbans, which support a vast array of threatened species. Mangroves act as natural barriers to climate change and serve as nurseries and breeding grounds for many aquatic species. Their role is crucial in controlling coastal erosion, which is vital to protecting the topography of our coasts. Recognising the role of youth and citizens as major stakeholders in conservation, the Magical Mangroves movement seeks to build the Volunteers’ environmental awareness and knowledge of these essential and fragile ecosystems and enable positive action for their conservation.”

Over three successful years, the Magical Mangroves programme has mobilized 200+ volunteers, conducting 340+ webinars. The initiative also involved sessions led by distinguished experts such as Mr Vasudevan, PCCF and MD of Forest Development Corporation of Maharashtra Dr K. Kathiresan referred to as the Mangrove Man of India Dr Anamitra Anurag Danda – Director, Sunderbans Program WWF-India Mr Dhritiman Mukherjee, celebrated Wildlife Photographer and Dr Kiran Shankar Mali – Assistant Director, Livelihood Development, Mangrove Foundation.

As a founding member of the India Wetlands Coalition (formerly India Mangroves Coalition) alongside the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Godrej & Boyce is dedicated to the conservation of India’s larger wetland ecosystem of which mangroves are a key part. Mumbai: Wockhardt Ltdglobal pharmaceutical and biotechnology is aiming to turn around its business operations and has perused important strategic initiatives for the same. The company is eying big on the restructuring of the US Business, vaccine tie-up with Serum for vaccine manufacturing in the UK, and Novel Antibiotics research to drive the business forward. For Q4FY23, the company posted strong operational performance with 7% Y-o-Y growth in revenue with a three-fold jump in the EBITDA to Rs. 47 crores.

In the restructuring of its US operations, the company is shutting down its manufacturing facility at Morton Grove and transferring the site to contract manufacturing organizations. This restructuring is estimated to result in annual savings of ~US$ 12 Mn. Post restructuring company looks to maintain sales with a 40 percent gross margin and manufacture a few products with higher margins through a third party.

Additionally, in March 2022, the company signed a 51:49 (Wockhardt 51 and Serum 49) Joint Venture with the Serum Institute of India for manufacturing vaccines at its UK facility. As a contribution to reserving capacity, Wockhardt has received a consideration of 10 million Pounds. The contract with Serum is for 150 million doses across 15 years and it has already identified two vaccines for the same. The company plans on manufacturing these vaccines post regulatory approvals and exhibit batches over the next 8-12 months.

Wockhardt is a leading R&D company and has comprehensive end-to-end drug discovery programs in Antibiotics. Six of the company’s programs have been granted Qualified Infectious Disease Product (QIDP) status by the USFDA. The company’s novel antibiotic – Emrok, which is already being marketed in India is expected to win approvals in eight other emerging markets in the next six to nine months. The flagship novel antibiotic – WCK 5222 is currently under global phase III clinical trials, which are expected to complete in the next 15-18 months. The company expects to market the product in the US, China, and India by 2025.

Recently, CARE Ratings Limited (CARE Ratings) have assigned a rating of CARE BBB- to the Company and reaffirmed the ratings of CARE BBB- (Triple B Minus) for the Long/Short Term Bank Facilities and Non-Convertible Debentures of the Company.
