meta digital

Under Meta’s We Think Digital initiative the program will focus on providing digital safety best practices to adolescents and youth across various schools and colleges in the state

Mumbai, With an aim to create a safer online environment, Meta has partnered with Maharashtra Cyber to launch a Digital Literacy and Awareness program for adolescents and youth in Maharashtra. The program, We Think Digital, will focus on digital safety best practices and will provide easy access to youth to digital literacy awareness sessions, training resources, knowledge repository including child and adult safety self-help material, safety videos, resources, and help guide.

With the launch of this program, Meta aims to promote safe online behavior by spreading awareness around increasing cyber-crimes and to equip adolescents with tools and resources to tackle the online harm. The training modules will focus on all aspects of cyber security and basics of digital literacy including browsing the internet, Cyber bullying, Sextortion, Darknet Services, Trolling, Identity Theft etc.

Sharing his views on the launch of the program, Mr. Yashasvi Yadav, Special Inspector General of Police (IGP) Maharashtra Cyber, said “While technology and internet has enabled so many lives, the increasing number of cyber-crimes continue to have an irreversible effect on the lives of those who are impacted by these crimes. Today, more and more youth are on the internet and have access to various digital platforms and therefore it is imperative that we offer them with the powerful tools, resources and knowledge that help them stay safe online. We would like to commend Meta in leading this initiative and partnering with us to take digital literacy to the last mile across Maharashtra.”

Built on Meta’s We Think Digital initiative, this partnership aims to train around 10,000 youth from various schools and colleges covering English, Hindi and Marathi languages in Maharashtra. Previously, Meta has conducted similar training and programs in various schools and colleges across Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Assam. Meta’s  We Think Digital outlines the digital citizen’s rights and responsibilities, encourages them to think critically about their digital behavior and interactions, and get the most out of the online world. Working in partnership with experts from across India, We Think Digital provides resources to build a global community of responsible digital citizens equipped with skills for a digital world.

Speaking on the collaboration, Satya Yadav, Head, Trust and Safety, Facebook India (Meta) said, “When it comes to young people our platforms are designed to ensure responsible empowerment along with building age-appropriate safeguards. We are constantly innovating technology to ensure that youth benefit from our platforms while they continue to feel safe. As per a report from 2019, around 31% of internet users in India were between the ages of 12-19. With that in mind, this partnership will create an ecosystem that will help in educating young people to use the internet that is not only safe but is also enabling them to grow.”

Meta has always made technological innovations towards introducing age-appropriate measures and products. In line with this commitment, Meta launched Messenger Kids in 2020 to help kids stay safe while being connected to friends and family under the supervision of their parents. Earlier this year, Meta launched Pledge Planets on Messenger Kids, an interactive in-app activity that helps kids learn and practice how to make healthy decisions online, stay safe and build resilience. Messenger Kids Pledge and the Pledge Planets activities were launched in close partnership with Meta’s Youth Advisors. This group of experts in the fields of online safety, child development and children’s media help Meta develop new products, features and policies for young people by sharing their expertise, research and guidance.

Over the years, Meta already has launched several efforts and initiatives to create a safe and more inclusive internet. This includes a new Child Safety Hub, which has video-on-demand safety training, tools, and resources to help youth stay safe. To combat the issue around NCII for users above the age of 18, Meta has launched StopNCII.org in partnership with UK Revenge Porn Helpline. In India, the platform has partnered with organizations such as Social Media Matters, Centre for Social Research, and Red Dot Foundation and will empower women across the world to combat and prevent the spread of non-consensual intimate imagery (NCII).  To provide a more enjoyable online experience, in the past year, Meta has also launched several safety features in the Facebook and Instagram app, such as Hidden Words, Limits, Comments Control, multi-block and the option to hide likes.

Masks Not Compulsory In Maharashtra From Saturday, Covid Curbs Removed

covid curbs

Maharashtra, which suffered worst from Covid, will say goodbye to all pandemic-related restrictions from Saturday as the state welcomes the Marathi New Year. The use of masks will be advised, but it will not be compulsory, the state government said. Bengal and Delhi too, removed the “mandatory” tag from masks, though their use has been advised in crowded areas.

In Maharashtra, the announcement came from the Office of Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray.

“All COVID restrictions in Maharashtra will be lifted, as we bring in the new year this Gudi Padwa!” read a tweet from its handle, referring to the spring festival to mark the traditional New Year for Marathi and Konkani Hindus.

The decision to drop all restrictions after nearly two years was taken at a cabinet meeting chaired by the Chief Minister, the state Health Minister, Rajesh Tope, told reporters.

The number of fresh daily Covid infections in the state has dwindled to around 100 a day and no new fatalities are being reported. On Monday, there were 964 active cases across 35 districts. Yavatmal, Washim and Hingoli districts have zero active cases, read a report from the state health department.

Altogether, the state has reported 78,73,619 cases of infections since the outbreak started in 2020; 1,47,780 people have died, the health department said.

Over the last couple of months, the countrywide Covid figures have also dropped. Over the last 24 hours, the country reported 1,225 new coronavirus infections, the number of active cases dipped to 14,307.The number of fatalities rose to 5,21,129 with 28 fresh deaths.

The total number of infections so far is 4,30,24,440.

Maharashtra, which bore the brunt of Covid through the first and second wave, had implemented tough restrictions, banning processions and physical “darshan” at pandals during last year’s Ganesh Chaturthi, the state’s biggest festival. The police declared that any violation will incur strict action.

Sandipani School harassing parents for fees

Sandipani school

Nagpur: In yet another dimming incident of avarice school harassing gullible parents in lieu of future of their ward, Sandipani School administration is reportedly seeking full payment of past curriculum despite school’s assurance of some relief owing to online teachings.

A group of parents on the condition of anonymity narrated their ordeal to Nagpur Today. They claimed that the Sandipani school administration not only threatened to jeopardize the future of their children by not promoting them but also behaved rudely with the parents as they were unable to pay school fees.

“The Covid time has already been tough for all. The pandemic not only attributed to crash crunches and job loss in front of us but also took a toll on the future of our children. Owing to the drastic time, the schools were shifted to online mode. As there were no physical classes, the Sandipani School administration had promised us some relief in fees during the pandemic time. However, recently, as the Covid curve declined the physical classes resumed. But the school administration is now seeking complete fees,” parents have alleged.

“They are asking us to pay complete fees or withdraw our ward’s admission from the school. It’s not like we are not willing to pay the fees. All we are asking for some time, but the school administration is being rudely behaving with us,” they said.

On being contacted, no one from Sandipani School was available for the comments.

Healthy Nagpur

This article is designed to give tips to readers about how they can improve or augment actions in their life to have a healthy lifestyle; it is not meant to be all inclusive but will include major components that are considered to be parts of a lifestyle that lead to good health. In addition to the tips about what people should do for healthy living, the article will mention some of the tips about avoiding actions (the don’ts) that lead to unhealthy living.

Healthy eating (diet and nutrition)

All humans have to eat food for growth and maintenance of a healthy body, but we humans have different nutrition requirements as infants, children (kids), teenagers, young adults, adults, and seniors. For example, infants may require feeding every 4 hours until they gradually age and begin to take in more solid foods. Eventually they develop into the more normal pattern of eating three times per day as young kids. However, as most parents know, kids, teenagers, and young adults often snack between meals. Snacking is often not limited to these age groups because adults and seniors often do the same.

Tips for everyday healthy eating:

  • Eat three healthy meals a day (breakfast, lunch, and dinner); it is important to remember that dinner does not have to be the largest meal.
  • The bulk of food consumption should consist of healthy foods, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and fat-free or low-fat milk products.
  • Incorporate lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs, and nuts (with emphasis on beans and nuts) into a healthy diet.
  • Choose foods that are low in saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, salt (sodium), and added sugars; look at the labels because the first listed items on the labels comprise the highest concentrations of ingredients.
  • Control portion sizes; eat the smallest portion that can satisfy hunger and then stop eating.
  • Healthy snacks are OK in moderation and should consist of items like fruit, whole grains, or nuts to satisfy hunger and not cause excessive weight gain.
  • Avoid sodas and sugar-enhanced drinks because of the excessive calories in the sodas and sugar drinks; diet drinks may not be a good choice as they make some people hungrier and increase food consumption.
  • Avoid eating a large meal before sleeping to decrease gastroesophageal reflux and weight gain.
  • If a person is angry or depressed, eating will not solve these situations and may make the underlying problems worse.
  • Avoid rewarding children with sugary snacks; such a pattern may become a lifelong habit for people.
  • Avoid heavy meals in the summer months, especially during hot days.
  • vegetarian lifestyle has been promoted for a healthy lifestyle and weight loss; vegetarians should check with their physicians to be sure they are getting enough vitaminsminerals, and iron in their diet.
  • Cooking foods (above 165 F) destroys most harmful bacteria and other pathogens; if you choose to eat uncooked foods like fruits or vegetables, they should be thoroughly washed with running treated (safe to drink) tap water right before eating.
  • Avoid eating raw or undercooked meats of any type.

Tips for special situations:

  • People with diabetes should use the above tips and monitor their glucose levels as directed; try to keep the daily blood glucose levels as close to normal as possible.
  • People with unusual work schedules (night shifts, college students, military) should try to adhere to a breakfast, lunch, and dinner routine with minimal snacking.
  • People who prepare food should avoid using grease or frying foods in grease.
  • People trying to lose weight (body fat) should avoid all fatty and sugary foods and eat mainly vegetables, fruits, and nuts and markedly reduce his/her intake of meat and dairy products.
  • Seek medical advice early if you cannot control your weight, food intake, or if you have diabetes and cannot control your blood glucose levels.

IPL 2022, RCB vs KKR Highlights: Bangalore win by 3 wickets against Kolkata

RCB

The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) secured their first victory of the TATA Indian Premier League ” IPL 2022 ” by beating the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by 3 wickets on Wednesday at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai.

A stellar bowling performance by RCB, spearheaded by Wanindu Hasaranga’s four-wicket haul restricted KKR to 128 before useful lower-order contributions from RCB batters took them over the line in a final-over thriller.

RCB, who were chasing 129 runs for victory, remained unchanged from their previous game. Umesh Yadav continued his fine form from the last game and dismissed Anuj Rawat for a duck in the first over of the innings.

The Royal Challengers lost both their openers after skipper du Plessis was caught inside the circle. Virat Kohli, who came in at number 3, hit two glorious fours but was soon dismissed after the former RCB skipper was caught behind off Yadav’s bowling.

At the end of powerplay, RCB were 3 down for 36, with David Willey and Sherfane Rutherford at the crease.

Fifty was up for RCB in the 8th over as the batting duo released some pressure by attacking spinner Varun Chakaravarthy, who was hit for a four and six each.

The Challengers were 59-3 at the end of ten overs as Willey and Rutherford played some risk-free cricket and kept the runs ticking.

Shahbaz Ahmed, who was promoted up the order, proved his striking ability by hammering two sixes against Russell to push things back in RCB’s favour.

RCB required 36 runs off the final five overs. The 100 was up for RCB after Shahbaz smacked a maximum against Chakaravarthy but the right-handed batter was stumped on the very next delivery.

With 24 required off the final three overs, there was another twist in the tale after Tim Southee struck twice in the over to dismiss Rutherford and Wanindu Hasaranga.

Harshal Patel hit two decisive fours in the penultimate over before Dinesh Karthik wrapped the chase in style with a six and a four.

Earlier, the Knight Riders, who were put in to bat first, made one change from their first game – Tim Southee replaced Shivam Mavi in the side. Openers – Venkatesh Iyer and Ajinkya Rahane made a cautious start to the innings, with 14 runs coming in the first three overs.

RCB capitalised on their fine start to dismiss Venkatesh Iyer, who was caught and bowled by Akash Deep in the fourth over.

KKR skipper Shreyas Iyer, who joined Rahane, creamed two fours to kick-off his innings. Mohammed Siraj dismissed Rahane after the right-handed batter was caught in the deep by Shahbaz Ahmed, who took an easy catch.

Nitish Rana began his innings in style by smacking a four and a six each against Akash Deep but the pacer bounced back to dismiss the left-handed batter, thanks to a fine running catch from David Willey and KKR were 44-3 at the end of 6 overs.-IPL 2022

Troubles grew further for the Knight Riders as captain Iyer was caught by du Plessis at long-on against Hasaranga’s bowling.

Sam Billings and Sunil Narine were the two new batters out in the middle. Narine started aggressively by smacking a four and six each against Akash Deep. Billings followed Narine and hit a maximum over mid-wicket.

Hasaranga claimed two wickets in consecutive deliveries to send Narine and Sheldon Jackson back to the pavilion. While Narine was caught inside the circle, Jackson was bamboozled by the spinner in the 9th over.

The dangerous Andre Russell walked in to bat, with KKR reeling at 76/6 at the half-way stage as the right-handed batter announced his arrival in grand fashion after he thumped a four and six each.

Harshal Patel got into the act with a rare wicket-maiden over by picking the wicket of Sam Billings, who was caught by Virat Kohli in the deep. However, Russell had no intentions of backing down as the explosive batter clubbed two giant sixes against Shahbaz Ahmed.

An explosive knock of 25 by Russell came to an end after he was caught behind off the bowling of Harshal Patel, who delivered an impressive wicket-maiden for the second consecutive time.

Tim Southee was Hasaranga’s fourth victim after a mistimed shot was safely caught by du Plessis at long-on. Umesh Yadav and Varun Chakravarthy added valuable 27 runs for the final wicket before Yadav was cleaned up by Akash Deep in the penultimate over. The Knight Riders ended up posting a total of 128 on the board.

Doctors share health tips to increase the nutritional value in daily life

Summer Health Tips

Your fitness journey need not stall in the current scenario of Covid-19 lockdown and work from home orders lifting, pushing you back to office and dealing with varied career and personal responsibilities. While one’s diet must be compliant with one’s body’s needs, life style and environmental stresses and proper nutrition along with building a sustainable approach to diet and exercise are crucial, most people still make excuses like “I don’t have time” or “I can’t afford it” or “I don’t know how”.

If you too belong to the category of these people, we got your health woes sorted and got a few doctors on board who not only spilled the secret to live longer and look better but also revealed the biggest contributors to lifespan and shared health tips to increase the nutritional value in daily life. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Vinodha Kumary, Deputy Chief Medical Officer at Jindal Naturecure Institute, listed some of the superfoods that we must include in our daily routine to improve our nutritional value:

Health Tips

1. Nuts and seeds: Pumpkin seeds, nuts, sunflower seeds, cinnamon, Olive oil and many others help us deal with PCOS. Apart from soothing the severe pain, nuts and seeds considerably reduce risk factors such as obesity, infertility, moods swings, hair loss, etc.

2. Leafy vegetables: Green veggies including spinach, kale, beans, broccoli and other leafy vegetables are a rich source of iron, vitamin C, chlorophyll, vitamin K, ascorbic acid, folate and plenty of other phytochemicals that help to keep the red blood cells healthy. These veggies also improve blood flow within the body ensuring that nutrients reach every part of the body.

3. Fruits: For weight loss, we can include in their diet plan fruits like oatmeal, apple, blueberries, and grapefruit. Grapes help prevent heart disease and high cholesterol while strawberries reduce the risk of chronic diseases. Mangoes have a balanced ratio of Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids. Also, they are packed with protein and essential nutrients and minerals.

Asserting that many people think that a healthy life can be attained by eating healthy food and exercising but forget the other important aspects like emotional and mental wellbeing, Dr Deepak Mittal, Founder of Divine Soul Yoga, insisted that to increase the nutritional value in daily life, we must take care of our physical and mental wellbeing. For improving our physical wellbeing, he suggested  –

• It is crucial to have the required nutrients in the diet, such as calcium, magnesium, zinc, protein, carbohydrates, antioxidants, Omega 3 fatty acids, folic acids and iron, to maintain optimal health. In addition, drink enough water to avoid dehydration and limit alcohol intake.

• It is also essential to cut down on junk food intake, practice portion control, and never miss breakfast.

• It is also essential to take out time from your busy schedule and practice 30-45 minutes of Yoga and Pranayama as it improves our strength, heart rate, hormonal balance and sleep quality.

Furthermore, to improve mental and emotional well-being, he suggested –

• It is essential to sleep at least 7-8 hours a day, take a healthy diet and exercise. These elements improve the nutrition absorption in our body and keep us away from stress and anxiety.

• We should also practise meditation and daily affirmations to enhance our mental wellbeing. Meditation is a proven method to elevate mood & mindfulness and reduce stress and pain.

Highlighting that eating mindfully allows us to enjoy our food, control our portion size and prevent over-eating, Aman Puri, Founder of Nutrition Daily, advised, “Apart from major macronutrients such as carbohydrates, proteins and fats, include more fibre-rich foods in your diet every day from fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Dietary fibre improves gut health, prevents constipation, and may help lower cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood sugar levels.”

He added, “Cut down on sugar, salt, caffeine, and junk food intake- these can potentially threaten your health. Fix your meal, and sleep timings and try to adhere to them. This will help to set up your biological clock and allow better functioning of the body.”

Since nutrition affects our physical and mental wellness, Dr Pradeep Mahindrakar, MD, Pathologist at Metropolis Healthcare Ltd., insisted that following a healthy diet can lead to positive changes in our everyday life. He recommended, “To begin your road to a well-balanced diet, make sure you are consuming all the nutrients your body needs throughout the day. That means protein, carbohydrates, fat, water, vitamins, and minerals all need to be a part of your diet. Eat fruits grown locally. Choose seed oils than veggie oils. Avoid breads, biscuits, cakes, pizza, pasta, packaged food/drinks, sweets and bakery products. Start cooking more of your own meals at home so you know exactly what’s going in them.”

Following are the tips he shared to increase the nutritional value in daily life:

neutrition tips

1. For your energy level: A more nutrient-rich diet means more fuel for you to power through your workday, your workout, and all those chores you need to do. Eat smaller meals more frequently. A piece of fruit or a few nuts is adequate. Avoid eating lot at lunch. Avoid alcohol. Drink plenty of water.

2. For your weight: Make strategic choices about what you consume. Find out how many calories you need for your age, gender, activity level and your personal weight goals. Stick with your workout plan with good nutrition.

3. For your aging process: Want to live longer and look better while you’re at it? Diet and exercise are the biggest contributors to lifespan.

4. For your brain function: Ever heard of “brain food?” Nutrient-rich foods like nuts, seeds, and avocados contain brain power-boosting Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids. Other foods which will maximize mental capacity include: blueberries – improve short term memory, pumpkin seeds – enhance memory and critical thinking skills, broccoli – enhances cognitive function.

5. For your immune system: In addition to fighting off disease, a well-balanced, nutritious diet can keep common illnesses at bay. Vitamins and minerals like Vitamin A, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B6, Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Vitamin E, Zinc and Selenium contribute to a stronger immune system. Foods’s highest in vitamins include fish, dark leafy greens, seeds, broccoli, pork, beef, lamb, mushrooms, nuts, eggs, sweet bell peppers, avocados, peas, winter squash and fruits. If you are vegetarian, then consider taking a multivitamin or mineral supplement.

He stressed, “Paying attention to nutrition can add extra years and quality to your life. Some nutrients support your digestive functions and immune system, which will work against the degenerative changes that occur within the body as you age. Other foods help the body to fight off disease, inflammation, and bad cholesterol. Food like papaya, blueberries, avocado, broccoli and nuts helps to improve aging process.”

Take time to fully enjoy what you are eating. Improve your nutrition, improve your life!

Private hospitals in Nagpur donate Rs 1.7 crore Covishield vials nearing expiry to civic body

Covishield Nagpur

NAGPUR: Private hospitals in the district have donated over 21,000 Covishield doses worth an estimated Rs 1.70 crore to the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), as they were nearing their expiry date. The civic body claims to have utilized all these doses at its free-of-cost centres in the city before the March 28 deadline.
Private hospitals said they ensured the doses didn’t expire in their custody and handed them over to the NMC which had numerous centres in the city.

Taking note of private hospitals’ concerns, the state public health department had sought details of Covishield doses available with them. The exercise had revealed that over 23,000 doses were lying with 22 private hospitals in Nagpur.

The private hospitals were hoping that the government would facilitate a return to the manufacturer or buyout of the doses lying with them since mid-2021. Ultimately, the private hospitals decided to hand them over in donation, incurring huge losses.

The paid Covid vaccination drive failed following drastic and sudden change of government stand. Free jabs had become available almost anywhere and anytime — from a drive-in to special camps for corporates to door-to-door campaigns. Private hospitals had procured plenty of stock, expecting that the government would keep the drive partially paid. Each Covishield jab was capped at Rs 780.

Dr Vidya Nair, vice-chairperson of Ravi Nair Hospitals Private Limited which runs the Orange City Hospital and Research Institute (OCHRI), had handed over 140 vials worth Rs 8.82 lakh to NMC. The civic body had conducted an inspection of the cold chain and records before accepting them.

NMC officials said there was no instruction to replace the expiring doses.
A release issued by the hospital stated, “OCHRI had been frantically corresponding with all competent state and central authorities along with Serum Institute of India, highlighting the need of return/re-routing/expiry date extension feasibility of the unutilized Covishield vaccine stock, so that these precious products do not get wasted. Accordingly, after obtaining confirmation of NMC, OCHRI donated 140 vials to NMC.”

Two major hospitals are still holding on to around 2,000 doses, as they have a longer expiry window. “We didn’t donate. We are using them for booster shots of our staff and whoever comes to get jabbed. Around 10 to 12 doses are consumed everyday, but many will remain unused till May. We will take a call soon,” said the director of one of the hospitals.

A prominent hospital’s marketing head said the hospital returned around 2,000 doses to its corporate offices, which utilized them in vaccination drives of other cities.

Spirituality can improve quality of life for heart failure patients: Study

spiritual

A study led by the American College of Cardiology, has suggested that spirituality not only helps improve the quality of life for people with chronic diseases like cancer but also impacts heart failure patients.

A study led by the American College of Cardiology, has suggested that spirituality not only helps improve the quality of life for people with chronic diseases like cancer but also impacts heart failure patients.

The study was published in the journal, ‘JACC Heart Failure’.

It further concludes spirituality should be considered a potential target for palliative care interventions to improve patient-centred and clinical outcomes in these individuals.

“Patients who have heart failure experience a poorer quality of life compared to their peers, with high levels of depression, anxiety and spiritual distress,” said Rachel S. Tobin, MD, resident in Internal Medicine at Duke University Hospital, and lead author of the study.

“Contributing to diminished quality of life is the fact that heart failure, unlike many other chronic diseases, is very unpredictable and can lead to hopelessness, isolation and altered self-image,” he added.

The American College of Cardiology and other major cardiovascular societies recommend palliative care for heart failure patients. Spirituality is a core domain of palliative care, with the goal of identifying and addressing spiritual concerns and providing patients with appropriate spiritual and religious resources. However, limited research has been conducted on spirituality’s impact on patients with heart failure, and there are no known tools designed to measure it.

yogaAccording to the researchers, spirituality is hard to define, but they reference several definitions that describe spirituality as how individuals find meaning and purpose in life, which can be separate from religious beliefs.

For instance, the Institute of Medicine defines spirituality as “the needs and expectations which humans have to find meaning, purpose and value in their life. Such needs can be specifically religious, but even people who have no religious faith or are not members of organized religion have belief systems that give their lives meaning and purpose.

Researchers conducted a review of 47 articles in order to explore the current knowledge of spirituality in heart failure patients. It described associations between spirituality and quality of life, as well as patient outcomes and propose clinical applications and future directions for spirituality in this population. There were approximately 10 varying instruments used to measure spirituality, some simple, others complex.

Key data examined include:

1. In the Palliative Care in Heart Failure (PAL-HF) trial, spiritual well-being improved in patients randomized to a palliative care intervention compared to usual care as evaluated by FACIT-Sp. The FICA spiritual history tool was also used to gather information on spirituality.

2. Patients randomized to palliative care had increased quality of life as measured by the Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire (KCCQ) and Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Palliative Care (FACIT-Pal). They were also found to have lower levels of anxiety and depression.

3. Another study found that after a 12-week mail-based psychosocial intervention, patients completing the intervention had higher quality of life as measured by KCCQ, as well as less depression and search for meaning. Out of the 33 patients included, 85.7 per cent felt that the intervention was worthwhile. In a pilot study, spiritual counselling was associated with improved quality of life, although there was no control group to determine if the effect was significant.

“The literature suggests not only can spirituality improve quality of life for the patient, but it can also help support caregivers and potentially help heart failure patients from needing to be readmitted to the hospital,” Tobin said.

“What we have suggested and are now doing is developing a spirituality screening tool, similar to ones used to screen for depression. This can be used to identify heart failure patients in palliative care who are at risk for spiritual distress. However, this is just a start. More research needs to be done,” he concluded.

On Monday, Akola once again became the eighth hottest place in the world. Unlike the day temperature, the minimum temperature of Nagpur took a dip by 6 degrees Celsius in just 48 hours.

According to IMD, southerly winds at lower level are causing the cloudy weather in Vidarbha which also increased the minimum temperature. However, the effect of Southerly winds in Vidarbha reduced which helped to increase the maximum temperature and it will further increase. North-westerly winds have started entering Central India which resulted in an increase in the maximum temperature in the region. Under this weather activity, the maximum temperature will increase further by 2-3 degrees by month end.

The scorching heat would be experienced from the beginning of April and in the first week the temperature is likely to touch 44 degree Celsius. A diet rich in fruits and vegetables has been scientifically proven to provide multiple health benefits, including lowering your risk of various chronic diseases and keeping your body healthy. Making major dietary shifts, on the other hand, can be overwhelming. For starters, changing your diet drastically can be difficult; but people can start with a few tiny changes. It is because things become easy to manage when you start with one thing at a time rather than all of them at once. A regular diet can be made a little bit healthier by including some basic, everyday foods to your meal. Read on.

Here’re 5 Healthy Foods To Add To Your Healthy Diet:

1. Berries:

Berries such as strawberries, cranberries, blueberries, black currants, and blackberries have been linked to a lower risk of cardiovascular disease. Natural antioxidants like vitamin C and vitamin E, as well as micronutrients like folic acid, selenium, alpha and beta-carotene, and lutein, are all found in them. Berries are abundant in moisture and fibre, while being low in calories. Antioxidant, anti-hypertensive, anti-hyperglycemia, and anti-inflammatory activities are all found in berries. A daily bowl of berries helps to prevent ageing, boost immune health, battle stress and anxiety, regulate body weight, and promote urinary tract health.

Berries2. Yogurt:

It is one nutritious food that is easily available across the world. Yogurt is high in protein, calcium, vitamin B12, and phosphorus – all of which are important components in the diet. Benefits of yogurt consumption include bone health, weight maintenance and cardio-metabolic disease prevention.

Yogurt is the best source of probiotics, in addition to calcium and protein (good live bacteria). Having a proper balance of bacteria in your gut improves digestion, blocks dangerous organisms that can cause infections, and boosts the immune system. Protein in yogurt promotes weight loss and has satiating properties.

3. Drumstick:

Drumstick or moringa is a trending vegetable in developing countries. It has been used for centuries due to its medicinal properties and health benefits. Moringa leaves are an abundant source of minerals, vitamins, and other essential phytochemicals. Leaf extract has anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, antioxidant, and anti-microbial properties. Moringa leaves are rich in iron and zinc, which help treat anemia and the development of sperm cells, respectively.Research states that regular use of drumsticks improves mental alertness, bone strength and improves eyesight. The anti-bacterial properties of moringa prevent cancer, common cough and cold. The laxative properties of moringa help relieve constipation.

4. Mangosteen:

Mangosteen has anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-hyperglycemic, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, antidepressant, antihistamine, analgesic and anti-viral properties. Mangosteen can cure acne, skin blemishes, oily and dry skin. Mangosteen controls levels of triglycerides, regulate heart rate and helps maintain normal blood pressure. The xanthones in mangosteen are naturally occurring plant compounds with anti-inflammatory molecules. This vital trait in mangosteen makes it a remarkable remedy for relieving unbearable body pain due to arthritis, sciatica, and menstrual cramps. Fiber helps regulate appetite, control untimely cravings, promote digestion, and augment energy metabolism.

5. Almonds:

Adding almonds to your diet can help lower blood cholesterol levels. They protect artery walls from damage. It was found that the flavonoids in almond skins work in synergy with vitamin E, thus reducing the risk of heart disease (Research at Tufts University). Almonds contain phosphorus that helps build strong bones and teeth. Almonds contain riboflavin and L-carnitine – nutrients that boost brain activity and may also reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Research shows that eating almonds along with a high glycemic index food significantly lowers the glycemic index of the meal and lessens the rise in blood sugar after eating.

State Government invokes Maharashtra Essential Services Maintenance Act in view of two-day strike( bharat bandh) by employees in energy sector

bharat bandh

Nagpur: In protest against the Government policies affecting workers, farmers, and people, a joint forum of Central Trade Unions has given a call for a nationwide strike on March 28 and 29. The Joint Platform of Central Trade Unions condemned the anti-worker, anti-farmer, anti-people and anti-national policies of the Central Government, a statement said.

The banking services are likely to be affected by the Bharat Bandh call as the banking sector will be joining the strike, the All India Bank Employees Association said on Facebook.

The Trade Unions said that after the State Assembly elections, the BJP Government at the Center has intensified the attacks on the working people, reducing the interest rate on EPF accumulations to 8.1 per cent from 8.5 per cent, sudden hike in petrol, LPG, kerosene, CNG prices.

The nationwide strike called by a joint forum of trade unions that will be joined by banks on 28 and 29 March is likely to impact the banking services, transportation, railways and electricity.

State Govt invokes MESMA:

Meanwhile, the State Government has invoked Maharashtra Essential Services Maintenance Act (MESMA) in view of two-day strike by workers and employees in the energy sector. As talks between agitating employees and the State Government failed, the employees were firm on a two days strike beginning 12 midnight of March 28. To prevent collapse of production, transmission and distribution of power, the Department of Industries, Energy and Labour issued a notification imposing a ban on employees’ strike, since electricity is categorised as essential.

The stage is set for confrontation as employees in the energy sector of State are aggrieved over Central and State Government policies that are pointing towards privatisation of assets of three State run companies. The Joint Action Committee comprising 39 office-bearers of various unions held talks with Dinesh Waghmare, Principal Secretary, Department of Energy, Maharashtra Government, to thrash out the demands of the employees. Despite categorical assurance from the Government that there are no plans for privatisation of distribution, the employees feel that State is only buying time.

Only morning shift suits Nagpur schools in April heat: Academics

school in summer

Nagpur: The state government’s directives to schools (state board) for operating classrooms in April full-time, even on Saturdays, has not gone down well with stakeholders from Vidarbha. Academics say the scorching heat will make it unbearable for students and the only way out is to use a clause in that same directive about morning shift.
In Nagpur, almost all state board schools end their academic session between April 10-15.

Ashnarayan Tiwari, principal of Adarsha Vidya Mandir (Gandhibagh)schools, said, “I don’t think that the full-day format in April is for Vidarbha. When the students get out at around 3pm, they will be venturing out when the sun is at its peak. Conduct of examination in third week of April is not at all a good idea.”

Sapan Nehrotra, lecturer at Jupiter Science College, said, “This is a completely wrong decision and should be scrapped immediately. Nobody is thinking about students, some of whom use cycles, public transport or even foot to commute to school. When school ends at 3pm or 4pm, do you want these students to be walking back with the sun at its peak?”

Ashok Gavhankar, principal of Raosaheb Thawre Schools, said, “There is a clause which allows for morning shift. So, we can call students at around 8am and wrap up by 1pm. Extending it any further will not be right for students.”

Resmi Umesh, principal of Saraswati Vidyalaya (primary), said, “This new schedule is not at all suitable for Nagpur. Apart from the hot weather, there is also an issue of entire schedule getting delayed. If we conduct exams in last week of April, then results get pushed to May.”
Even education department officials were perplexed on how to implement the new directives. Speaking on the condition of anonymity, an official said, “Principals have been calling our people asking how this will happen. Almost everyone has already planned their academic calendar and exams will get over by maximum mid-April. Now, even we don’t know how to handle this situation.”

Another school teacher said, “Visit our classrooms one day and sit under the fan. At noon, that fan starts spewing hot air that literally can be felt on your skin. Even from windows, hot air keeps blowing in making it very difficult for our kids.”
Nagpur, along with other parts of Maharashtra, has been witnessing an unusually hot March so far.

Earlier on Tuesday and Wednesday, petrol and diesel prices were hiked by 80 paise a litre each in a row since the ending of an over four-and-half month hiatus in rate revision.

With this hike, petrol price will now be Rs 112.2 per litre in Nagpur as on date. Similarly, the diesel rate in the city will be Rs 95 per litre.

Marathi made mandatory for official works of local bodies, Bill passed

udhav thakaray

The Bill was necessitated as the Maharashtra Official Language Act, 1964, did not make it mandatory to use Marathi in official works

udhav thakaray

Nagpur: The Maharashtra Legislative Assembly on Thursday unanimously passed a Bill that aims to make the use of the Marathi language mandatory in official works of local authorities, including civic bodies and corporations formed by the State Government, according to reports.

Minister for Marathi Language Subhash Desai said the introduction of the Bill was necessitated as the Maharashtra Official Language Act, 1964, did not make it mandatory for the local authorities to use Marathi in their official works. Provisions have been made in the Act for its effective implementation, he said. Also, complaints regarding its implementation will be addressed to a Special District Marathi Language Committee, said the Minister.

Desai further said that any local authority, be it established by the State Government or the Central Government or State-run corporations, will have to use Marathi while interacting with people and in internal works too. The minister also said the use of English or Hindi by local authorities for certain government works, like communicating with foreign ambassadors, has been allowed.

Meanwhile, BJP MLA Ashish Shelar said that there were some discrepancies between the provisions suggested by the government. “While Marathi will be the working language in all government and municipal offices, the use of English will be permitted in case of certain official purposes. Does this mean that ordinary citizens will have to compulsorily use Marathi whereas the officials can use English,” asked Shelar.

Responding to this, the Minister said, the provision must not be interpreted in this way. All the official works will be undertaken in Marathi. Correspondence to places like embassies of other countries or other such places will be done in English.

Shelar responded, “We do not doubt the effective implementation of this law. Even we believe that it must be effectively implemented. Our concern is that if the District Committee is given unlimited authority to redress grievances and initiate action, there is a possibility that it might get misused at the administrative level.”

He said that instead of setting up the committee at the district level, a committee must be set up in every office for its effective implementation. These committees will be like the committees that have been set up in every office for the safety of women in government offices.

Helmet mandatory for two-wheeler riders visiting Maharashtra govt offices

Helmet

NAGPUR: The next time you visit any government offices across Maharashtra, make sure you are wearing a helmet as the Maharashtra government has made it mandatory for all two-wheeler riders to follow rules or face action. Regional transport offices across the state have been assigned to implement the order.

In a notification issued by transport commissioner (Maharashtra) Avinash Dhakne, the new rule has been introduced for effective implementation of road safety. It has been observed that that most of the citizens who come for various works in government offices and even their staff are driving two-wheelers without helmets.

“The use of helmets while driving is very important from the point of view of road safety and it has been observed that most of the riders who are injured or killed in two-wheeler accidents are traveling without helmets. Therefore, there should be a comprehensive awareness and implementation campaign on the use of helmets in our area of work,” stated Dhakne.

“Citizens should be sensitized about the use of helmets with the help of district administration. All government, semi-government offices, educational and other institutions should be involved in this campaign,” the transport commissioner stated.

Even after this, under the Motor Vehicles Act, appropriate action should be initiated against the citizens and staff officers who were found driving two-wheelers without helmets while coming to the government offices. The TC also directed all RTOs to submit an action taken report with its office in Mumbai, confirmed a senior official from the transport department in Nagpur.

58% MDR-TB patients of region young adults: GMCH study

MDR-TB

NAGPUR: A study by the pulmonary medicine department at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) has found that 58% young adults (19-39 years) were among the 1,909 patients who suffered from multi-drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB). The lot also accounted for more than 50% of the total deaths due to DR-TB. The study spread over 15 years in three five-year slabs from 2007 to 2022, covered patients from the region.

The study points out at gradual rise in women suffering from DR-TB while predominance of men patients was seen across all age groups, except less than 18 years. The number of affected women touched 40% between 2018-22 as compared to 28% in 2008-12. The ratio of men and women MDR-TB patients stood at 2:1.

DR-TB is caused by TB bacteria which is resistant to at least one first-line medicine while in MDR-TB, there is resistant to more than one or at least isoniazid and rifampicin drugs.
Dr Sushant Meshram, professor and head of the department, presented the figures ahead of World TB Day. “Stress related to jobs, unemployment or  career issues may lead to low immunity among young adults. This helps the TB bacteria in causing the illness,” said Dr Meshram, who is also in-charge, nodal Drug Resistant TB (DRTB) centre at GMCH.
He said that most of the patients including children under study had MDR-TB which was concerning.

Around 40% Indian population is infected with TB due to which its elimination drive has taken a blow. Asymptomatic carriers and comorbid patients who discontinue treatment are found to be spreaders of the lung infection.

The national average of young adults suffering from MDR-TB at 38% is lower than the region’s.

The department also analyzed drug sensitive TB analysis for 926 patients at GMCH TB unit from 2018-2022. Around 69% patients were cured, 10% passed away while 3.6% lost follow-up and 3% accounted for failure and treatment regimen change.
Dr Meshram said surveillance of active cases like seen in Covid management, prevention, early treatment and capacity building hold key to eradication of the disease by the 2030 UN deadline. “Smoking, under-nutrition and comorbidity are major causes of TB. Under-nutrition is linked to poverty and slum dwelling. These factors need to be addressed,” he said.
