Nagpur: Almost half of Nagpur city was plunged into darkness as the power system of Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) collapsed due to a major breakdown on Tuesday night. The supply tripped around midnight leaving citizens furious.
According to reports, areas of Dhantoli, Chhatrapati Nagar, Narendra Nagar, Manewada, and parts of Besa and Ghogli were engulfed in darkness. With peak power demand again heading Northwards, the supply system of Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited is plagued by several difficulties. The soaring temperature is impacting the functioning of the electrical equipment and the strain is having an impact on the quality of the power supply.
During the peak afternoon period, there are reports of power failure ranging from one to two hours for inexplicable reasons. The supply constraints are due to lower power generation where coal shortage is a major worry. The tripping during midnight forced the citizens to spend a sleepless night and cursed the authorities. It was for nearly half an hour and was enough to cause severe discomfort.
According to the MSEDCL spokesperson, the 132 kV Besa line tripped, probably due to extra load. At the same time, Khaparkheda Kanhan’s extra-high voltage (EHV) also tripped leading to cascading effect on substations in Nagpur resulting in a major power failure.
Nagpur: Following Supreme Court directives, the State Election Commission has got down to the task of conducting civic body polls. The SEC on Tuesday announced that the final boundaries of the Prabhag system would be notified on May 17.
A notification by Avinash Sabnis, Deputy Commissioner, SEC, released the program about the Prabhag system on Tuesday. SEC has to wrap up the Prabhag system by May 10 taking into account various suggestions and objections filed by individuals during the hearing process held earlier. On May 12, SEC has to complete the Prabhag and send it for approval to Chief Election Commissioner, SEC and publish the approved Prabhag for information to the public on May 17.
Since the Supreme Court had directed SEC to notify the civic polls within two weeks, by May end, the SEC machinery has gone into election mode. Polls to elect a new body is due in Nagpur, Navi Mumbai, Vasai-Virar, Ulhas Nagar, Kolhapur, Akola, Amravati, Nashik, Pune, Pimpri Chinchwad, Kalyan-Dombivali, Bruhanmumbai and Thane Municipal Corporations. Barring Brihanmumbai, the rest of the other Corporations will have a three-member Prabhag system.
Earlier, SEC had given in-principle approval on February 1, 2022, to the Prabhag system prepared by respective municipal corporations. Thereafter, public hearings were held in respective cities between February 16 to 25 and the final report was submitted to SEC on March 5. Even as SEC was busy with finalizing dates for polls, the State Government amended the Prabhag system following which the entire exercise was postponed. However, recently the Apex Court dismissed the State Government’s appeal and said elections will have to be held without reservation for OBC.
Nagpur: Putting to rest all speculations on online/offline exams, higher education minister Uday Samant on Tuesday asserted that all universities would be going ahead with pen-and-paper format only.
The minister told TOI that Nagpur University vice-chancellor Subhash Chaudhari met him in Mumbai on Monday and assured him that the university would also be going ahead with the offline mode of examination.
“Chaudhari told me that media misquoted him on the issue, and he was firm on pen-and-paper format following the consensus reached in the VCs’ meeting on April 25. I have met Aurangabad University VC, who also gave the same assurance. Many universities like Mumbai and Pune have already started summer exams,” Samant told TOI.
When pointed out the issue of a large number of subjects making it impossible for the universities to complete the exams in one-and-a-half months as instructed by the government, the minister said the universities can start papers earlier and it is not necessary to wait till June 1, as was mentioned in the guidelines.
“All the universities would have similar issues, not only the NU. The varsities have been given free hand to hold the exams as per their convenience. The gap between papers can be reduced if needed. The universities have been told to complete the process by July 15,” he said.
Chaudhari did not respond to TOI’s call or text message.
The minister’s categorical statement came at a time when the protests by students intensified across Maharashtra and exams were delayed. The protests started at NU due to flip-flops by the administration and later spread to other universities like Pune and Amravati.
NSUI, a youth wing of Congress, Nationalist Students Congress (NSC), a students’ wing of NCP, and Maharashtra Students Welfare Association (MSWA), led the demonstrations in front of various universities. The issue became a big rage on social media where students vented their ire against the government for forcing them to appear in offline papers amid the Covid scare and scorching heat. Following the protests, a majority of universities adopted a wait and watch stand and were waiting for any of them to take calls on exams, say NU officials.
NU MEET TODAY TO DISCUSS ONLINE/OFFLINE EXAMS
NU’s Academic Council is likely to decide the fate of the inordinately delayed summer examinations when its members meet on Wednesday. The administration would be tabling the Board of Examinations and Evaluation (BOEE) decision to opt for online exams before the council members for discussion. NU officials said the BOEE decision is likely to be rejected and there would be consensus on the offline mode.
The meeting would also discuss other issues like preparation for May 25 convocation, say officials.
Nagpur: ABVP activists met VC Subhash Chaudhari on Tuesday and requested him to clear the air on the conduct of the summer exams. This is for the first time that the ABVP, the BJP’s youth wing, has entered into the raging issue of online/offline exams.
A delegation led by Priyanka Vaid apprised him about students being in a confused state of mind over the exams. Final year students are the most affected as they are unable to plan their future in terms of placement and postgraduate admissions.
They requested Chaudhari and the Board of Examination and Evaluation (BOEE) director Prafulla Sable to declare the timetable at the earliest. Earlier, NSUI and NSC activists staged demonstrations in front of NU against offline exams.

● The ProTeen digital career counselling platform has been focusing on a strong regional presence to deepen its footprint in non-metro cities
● Next, ProTeen plan to set up physical centres at other locations in Maharashtra like Nasik, Pune etc
Nagpur, May 10, 2022: ProTeen, an integrated digital career guidance platform is all set to expand its phygital presence in Maharashtra with the launch of its career centre in Nagpur. Inaugurated in February 2022, this career centre caters to the predominant student population that constitutes the larger chunk of the city’s demographics. Such ProTeen centres offer exposure to comprehensive global career advice through regional, localised, and personalised counselling. The centre enhances local comprehension by ensuring all counsellors are proficient in English, Hindi and Marathi and all guidance provided adheres to the linguistic, social, and cultural values of students residing in this region.
As India’s digital revolution amplifies access to the internet and mobile devices, the 21st-century landscape is creating new and better job opportunities for students everywhere, including in tier 2 and 3 cities. Nagpur, which is emerging as a major educational hub, has an expanding population of students who presently lack the awareness and access to high-quality career counselling services. ProTeen aims to bridge this counselling gap with a phygital (physical + digital) career centre that seamlessly delivers technologically-driven customised career counselling via a network of highly trained expert professionals.
ProTeen’s career counselling platform leverages the 3D awareness engine to identify students’ interests and aptitude, help them select an academic stream, and develop appropriate skills for the 21st-century workplace.
Commenting on the launch of the Nagpur centre, Paridhi Khaitan, Managing Director, ProTeen, states, “Nagpur is an eminent city in Maharashtra with a high ratio of student population given the presence of multiple reputed educational institutions like AIIMS, NIT, IIM, etc. Nagpur’s great potential for educational growth makes it even more crucial for students and parents to be aware and informed about the right steps that take one to the best career decisions. It is, therefore, vital to provide students and parents with immediate access to the right academic and career guidance to help them make informed career
choices in the 21st century. ProTeen’s localised career centre will provide scientifically-driven and personalised career counselling to effectively guide students into the new world of work and shape the future of our country’s youth.”
The 21st-century career landscape enables equal opportunities to students across India, but there remains a distinct lack of awareness about career opportunities in tier 2 and 3 cities. To address this lack, and to provide effective and smart career guidance, the ProTeen platform is now also available in major regional languages including Marathi, Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, and Tamil, etc. By successfully adapting to the local needs of a region and pairing its digital platform with a physical centre, ProTeen provides increased and easy access to new-age career counselling irrespective of barriers like language and location. This hybrid, localised approach enables ProTeen to provide students all over the country with a scientific, holistic, and experiential approach to making smart career decisions in the 21st century.
In its quest to ensure deeper penetration of career counselling across India, ProTeen has targeted not only metro cities but also smaller towns with high student populations to bring access to informed career decision-making to all. The company has set up 15+ career centres across tier 2 and 3 cities, marking a major milestone in the company’s expansion plans. ProTeen looks forward to continuing the momentum with a plan to launch up to 100 such career centres in the next 12 months.

MUMBAI: While speaking to media persons gathered outside the hospital from which she was discharged on Sunday, Independent MP Navneet Rana challenged Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray to prove himself by contesting elections against her.
Special public prosecutor Pradeep Gharat told TOI the Maharashtra government will approach the sessions court on Monday for cancellation of the bail given by it to the Rana couple last Thursday, saying the court, while granting them bail, had imposed several conditions, including that they would not speak to the media regarding the case.
“It is so mentioned in the bail order that if they violate any of the conditions which have been imposed on them, the bail granted to them shall stand automatically canceled,” Gharat added.
Navneet told media persons: “The Thackeray government has played vendetta politics against us for reciting the Hanuman Chalisa. You have got the CM position because of your ancestors’ name. If they really want to know who the public supports, I challenge him to contest elections against me. He can pick any district in the state to contest.”
Rana said she and her husband, MLA Ravi Rana, will visit Delhi to “seek justice”.”We will be demanding action against Sena leaders such as Sanjay Raut, Anil Parab, and the CM himself,” said Ravi.
Nagpur: For the first time in May, Nagpur city reported as many as five new Covid cases in a single day on Sunday. Test count in the city also increased to 861. Daily tests increased possibly because all the government officials who were involved in arranging the President’s visit to the city were tested.
Though the details of the five patients who were found positive are yet to be released by officials, sources said they might have Delhi travel history. Apart from Nagpur, Amravati and Washim reported one new case each. One patient each from Chandrapur and Washim recovered in the last 24 hours. This took the number of under-treatment patients in Vidarbha to 20. All of them are in home isolation.
Chandrapur became Covid-free once again with the recovery of one patient there. Now, Nagpur with 8 cases, is the only district in East Vidarbha (Nagpur Division) having active cases. On the other hand, four out of five districts in the Amravati division have patients under treatment. In addition to Amravati’s one patient detected on Sunday, Washim (5), Buldhana (5) and Yavatmal (1) have Covid patients.
In Nagpur district, of the 861 tests conducted, 761 were in Nagpur city alone. Seven of the eight under-treatment patients are in the NMC area, while one is in Nagpur rural.
Nagpur: Guides from Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR) will sit on a day’s dharna outside the office of the chief conservator of forests (CCF) at Chandrapur in May 11.
According to the Abhayaranya Guides Karmachari Sangh (AGKS) Maharashtra Pradesh, authorities have been ignoring many of their demands despite meetings and reminders.
On its letterhead, AGKS states it is affiliated with the national labor union body Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh. Their demands include payment, and employment issues apart from concerns over insurance policies of employees.
Praveen Kanoje, president of AGKS, said, “For a long time we have been in touch with forest officials regarding various demands. To date, however, they have not given a written reply to our organization.”
AGKS members met on April 20 and decided to go ahead with a sit-in dharna. Kanoje said, “We will be there from noon to 5 pm. We hope officials will meet us and resolve the pending issues.”
Kanoje said, “Our guides must start getting payslips with provident fund deductions. The guides are being graded and paid on basis of it, but the officials are charging the full amount from the tourists.”
AGKS also wants the Wednesday ‘shramdaan’ to become voluntary. “On Wednesday, safari is closed in our area, and guides are called to work in the jungle to clear fallen trees along gypsy routes, etc. But instead of being voluntary, this exercise is being made mandatory,” said Kanoje.
The organization has also demanded that locals be employed at every safari gate. “In certain places, like Kesalghat, youths from the immediate vicinity are not being deployed. Some incidents had occurred there and since then youths from other villages are being employed. This discrimination must end,” said Kanoje.
AGKS has also demanded group insurance for all guides. “What if something happens to our guides? It is only common sense that the forest department must take insurance policies on their behalf,” said Kanoje.
New Delhi: Amid loudspeaker row in the state, Maharashtra Home Minister Dilip Walse-Patil said on Friday (May 6) that the Union government should come out with a policy on the use of the public address system.
Talking to reporters after holding a meeting to review the law and order situation in the state, Dilip Walse-Patil thanked people from Hindu and Muslim communities for maintaining peace amid the loudspeaker row.
“The Centre should bring a policy (on loudspeakers) for the entire country. But I will thank the Muslim and Hindu communities. This issue could be handled peacefully and law and order could be maintained in the state because of their cooperation,” Walse-Patil said, as per PTI.
Last month, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray had demanded that the loudspeakers used in mosques be removed by May 3, failing which Hanuman Chalisa would be played at high volume to drown out azaan.

Nagpur: City police chief Amitesh Kumar has started a dialogue with religious heads of different institutions to enforce the rules related to the usage of loudspeakers, including enforcing the silent hours between 10 pm and 6 am.
Adopting an apolitical and secular approach, Kumar has declared a citywide drive against all use of loudspeakers, cracking the whip on marriage venues, bands and DJ parties, musicals, and other events from next week. “If any private organizations, group, or individual wants to use loudspeakers then they have to follow the rules pertaining to sound or noise or be prepared to face action,” said the top cop. He and Joint CP Aswati Dorje, Addl CP Navinchandra Reddy, DCP Special branch Basavraj Teli and others are holding talks with various religious and political groups over the loudspeaker issue.
Kumar said around 60-70 applications from various religious institutions have reached the city police seeking permission for use of loudspeakers. “In order to tackle the loudspeaker issue peacefully, city police top brass has started inviting different institutional heads from various communities to exchange opinions regarding loudspeaker usage, and permitting them only within the legal framework,” he said.
“Police are now only appealing to people cordially, but would not hesitate to act if even a single stone is pelted anywhere. No group can maliciously reach out to another without police intervening,” said the CP.
Kumar also said certain norms, like silent hours, may pose a challenge for certain religious rituals in the wee hours of the day, but laws would be enforced over a period of time in a phased manner. “Police are discussing religious issues with different groups and trying to find a way out of each situation. Law would prevail but we are appealing to all for cooperation. All the religious places need loudspeakers and everyone would face some issues without them, but police would be firmly enforcing the law,” said Kumar during an informal media interaction.
The city police top brass has appealed to the masses to restrict the use of loudspeakers, fit them within the guidelines and norms set by the Supreme Court verdicts, and sound and noise pollution rules put into place by enactments.
