Nagpur : So many experiments were performed for the last 15 years regarding industry-institute linkage concept in State. But this time, it is being done in a novel way. For the first time in Maharashtra, an engineering college joined hands with Government department to impart training to the junior engineers who have just joined as Government employees. Government College of Engineering (GCOE) has tied up with Public Works Department (PWD) to train Junior Engineers of PWD.
Elaborating this idea, Dr M B Kumthekar, Principal of GCOE, told “This is for the first time that such a concept is being experimented. These engineers are fresh at job. They have some book is knowledge sans hands-on experience. We will provide them the knowledge, they need. We will make them aware of new technological advancements too. This will give them an idea to work with proper technical skills on field.” The ‘Foundation Training Programme’ for newly appointed Junior Engineers in PWD is spread over three sessions. A batch of Junior Engineers will undergo training for 21 days.
The programme has two separate types of contents. about PWD working and technical knowledge. Under PWD work culture training, PWD manual, accounts code, measurement book, bill records, work and contract clauses, e-bill, e-tender, on-line compliance have been covered by PWD experts. Later, the trainees will be apprised about modern construction machinery, concrete technology, material testing, geo technical investigations, mix design of concr ete/GSB / SMA/DBM by faculty of GCOE Nagpur. Ulhas Debadwar, Chief Engineer, PWD, said,“This is a very good concept initiated by GCOE. This can be the best example where industry is being linked to institute in a real sense. Many times we have no time and no manpower to train the people joining our organisation.
The backlog of the training keeps mounting as we cannot do that for several reasons. The models of Civil Engineering components made by students of GCOE are excellent and there should be more such training programmes at GCOE. I welcome this idea.” Dr Abhay Wagh, Director of Department of Technical Education, also welcomed the idea and said, “We are trying hard to increase employability of our students. This is an excellent step taken by GCOE in that regard.
This year, we have sent students of Polytechnic to various corporate companies where they actually worked like employees. “We have double benefit out of it. Our college faculty also gets updated as they have to impart training based on the latest technology. Secondly, we involve our students in organising the training who attend also, so they, too, get some practical knowledge.” Dr C S. Thorat, Joint Director, Directorate of Technical Education, Regional Office, Nagpur, and Dr N P Tongaonkar, Superintending Engineer,Vigilance and Quality Control Circle, PWD Regional Office, graced the inaugural function as guests of honour.
