Date:

New Delhi : External Affairs Minister and senior BJP leader Sushma Swaraj Tuesday said she will not contest in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, but left it to the party to take a final decision on the matter. Swaraj, a seven-time MP, was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Vidisha constituency in Madhya Pradesh in 2014. She won with a margin of 400,000 votes.

“It is the party which decides, but I have made up my mind not to contest the next elections,” Swaraj was quoted . She was speaking to reporters in Madhya Pradesh ahead of the assembly polls later this month.

She became the second woman to hold the office of foreign minister after former prime minister Indira Gandhi. At the age of 25, she became the youngest cabinet member in the Haryana government. She also had a short stint as the chief minister of Delhi in 1998 and was the leader of Opposition in the 15th Lok Sabha when the Congress-led UPA was in power.

In 2016, Swaraj successfully underwent a kidney transplant at AIIMS. She was back in Parliament in March 2017.
