History of Maharashtra Day 2024
Once upon a time, the Bombay state was sizable, filled with countless districts. Each district had a unique language of its own. Then, the States Reorganization Act of 1956 chimed in. This Act moved the Kannada-speaking districts of Belgaum, Bijapur, Dharwar, and North Canara. They left Bombay State to join the ranks of Mysore State. But languages like Marathi, Gujarati, Kutchi, and Konkani still filled the Bombay State. Under the Bombay Reorganization Act in 1960, another change occurred. The state was sliced into two significant parts. One state housed folk fluent in Gujarati and Kutchhi. This state became known as Gujarat. The other state consisted of the Marathi and Konkani speakers and adopted the name Maharashtra.
On 1 May 1960, Bombay State was replaced by Maharashtra and Gujarat states. This day is now celebrated as State Formation Day in both areas. Maharashtra marks the day with big, festive celebrations. It’s a public holiday for them too.

The maiden expressed her discontentment with Angira, earning her a curse from him. He warned her: “Watch out! You will fall from heaven lands to earth, reborn as a female monkey in mountain woods.”
She found herself filled with regret and sought comfort from a kind saint. The saint reassured her, “A believer in God will be born to you. He’ll spend his life in service to God.” She was born Kunjar’s daughter, earth’s monkey king, and later married Kapiraj Kesari of Mount Sumeru. Her son, Hanuman, came to be via five holy influences: a saint named Angira’s curse and blessings, her own prayers, the good wishes of Lord Shiva and the wind deity, Vayu, and the rewards of the Putreshti Yagna. Legend maintains that Lord Shiva reincarnated as a human in his 11th avatar as Hanuman. All because he couldn’t assist Lord Rama in his actual form.

Nagpur: With an aim to engage with nutrition and dietetics students, Datta Meghe Institute of Higher Education and Research and School of Allied Health Sciences Nagpur. and the Almond Board of California hosted a session on the benefits of consumption of almonds. The session, led by Ritika Samaddar, Regional Head of Dietetics, focused on highlighting three recent research studies funded by the Almond Board of California. These studies highlighted that almonds help regulate blood sugar levels in individuals with prediabetes, help to facilitate weight loss, and alleviate muscle soreness post-workout. The session saw around 70 nutrition and dietetics students participate in the discussion.
The expert talked about how adding a handful of almonds to the daily diet can have a positive impact on blood sugar levels in individuals with prediabetes and obesity. Furthermore, the discussion also touched upon the role of almonds in weight management, based on findings from one of the three studies.
A study led by Dr. Anoop Misra, Professor and Chairman, Fortis-C-DOC Centre of Excellence for Diabetes, Metabolic Diseases, and Endocrinology (New Delhi) showed that the addition of almonds to the diet may help reduce the burden of diabetes. The study that was carried out on Indian participants broke new ground in reversing prediabetes, or glucose intolerance, to normal blood sugar levels in nearly one-quarter (23.3%) of the people studied. The short-term phase of the study was conducted over three days while the long-term phase of the study was conducted over three months, with participants having prediabetes. For the duration of the study, 60 participants in each research consumed 20g (0.7 oz) of almonds, around a small handful, 30 minutes before breakfast, lunch, and dinner. In both phases, it was seen that consuming 20g (0.7 oz) of almonds 30 minutes before a meal significantly improved participants’ glycaemic control compared to people who didn’t do so.
Speaking about Dr. Misra study and the benefits of almond consumption, Ritika Samaddar, Regional Head of Dietetics said, “With prediabetes becoming increasingly prevalent, maintaining a healthy diet is imperative. Almonds, with their nutrient-rich profile, serve as an ideal addition to dietary plans aimed at regulating blood glucose levels. Moreover, studies demonstrate that the satiating properties of almonds aid in curbing hunger, thereby regulating overall calorie intake.”
Another study published in Obesity led by Dr. Alison Coates, Professor of Human Nutrition and Director of the Alliance for Research in Exercise, Nutrition, and Activity at the University of South Australia involved 140 participants aged 25 to 65 with BMI between 27.5 to 34.9 kg/m2. Participants were on a 3-month energy-restricted diet with either almonds or carb-rich snacks (Phase 1), followed by 6 months of weight maintenance (Phase 2). During both phases, the almond-enriched diet (AED) group ate unsalted, whole almonds (with skin) for 15% of their energy, while the nut-free diet (NFD) group received 15% of their energy from carb-rich snacks like oven-baked fruit cereal bars and rice crackers.
In the study, both groups reduced an average of 15 pounds (7 kg) in three months and shed an additional 2 pounds (approximately 1 kg) in the next six months. The AED group showed a greater reduction in very small triglyceride-rich lipoprotein particles and small LDL particles compared to the NFD group. Overall, the study found that an almond-enriched diet can promote weight loss and maintenance like an energy-restricted NFD, and both also promote heart health. So, replacing typical snacks with almonds can have a meaningful impact on lipoprotein subfractions, shifting to a less atherogenic pattern.
Speaking about the studies Ritika Samaddar, Regional Head of Dietetics said, “The research findings suggest that consuming almonds does not directly contribute to obesity. Instead, incorporating almonds into a balanced diet can aid in blood sugar regulation and promote heart health, among other general health benefits. Opting for almonds as a snack over highly processed foods can also boost intake of essential nutrients such as calcium, phosphorus, zinc, fiber, protein, and vitamin E.”
The Witard study, published in Frontiers in Nutrition, aimed to investigate the effects of almonds on exercise recovery and muscle soreness. The study involved 25 middle-aged, mildly overweight participants who consumed either 57g of whole raw almonds or a calorie-matched 86g of unsalted pretzels daily for eight weeks. Post that, participants underwent a 30-minute downhill run test. The results showed that those who consumed almonds experienced decreased muscle soreness and better muscle performance during a vertical leap test compared to the control group. This study concluded that incorporating almonds into one’s diet may improve exercise recovery and reduce muscle soreness.
Commenting on the findings of Witard study, Ritika Samaddar, Regional Head of Dietetics said, “The new study highlights intriguing findings suggesting that incorporating almonds into one’s diet can potentially reduce muscle soreness and enhance exercise recovery. Given the nutritional richness of almonds, which includes protein, healthy fats, and others, it’s plausible that these nuts could offer such benefits. Almonds serve as an excellent snack choice for individuals aiming to improve overall health and recover effectively after physical activity.”
The recent research studies conducted by the Almond Board of California have consistently highlighted the numerous health benefits associated with incorporating almonds into one’s diet. The nutrient profile of almonds not only makes these nuts a perfect snacking option but also a great addition before meals. 28 g of almonds provide 6 grams of protein, 12.44 grams of unsaturated fat, 3.5 grams of dietary fiber, and 7.27 grams of vitamin E [1]. Additionally, almonds are recognized for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, attributed to their content of polyphenolic compounds like flavonoids and proanthocyanidins making them an excellent addition to one’s diet.
Back on April 13, 1919, something tragic happened in Amritsar, Punjab, The Jallianwala Bagh massacre took place. It’s hard to forget that painful event. It marked the cruelty inflicted on the Indian people. That same Jallianwala Bagh massacre was a horrifying scene. Taking place in Amritsar, Punjab, it became a sign of the harshness faced by Indians under British rule. This catastrophic event was pivotal in India’s struggle for freedom. It stiffened India’s resolve, pushed us to seek self-governance and escape British control.
History of The Jallianwala Bagh Massacre
On April 13, 1919, a heartbreak event happened in Amritsar, Punjab, India. The British were in power during this time. The tragic episode, known as the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, happened in a public park where unarmed Indian citizens gathered. Led by Brigadier General Reginald Dyer, the British soldiers fired at the crowd. The civilians were there to peacefully protest against two things. First, they were against the arrest of their leaders, Dr. Saifuddin Kitchlew and Dr. Satya Pal. Second, they opposed the Rowlatt Act, a rule that allowed the British to imprison them indefinitely without a court hearing. Men, women, and children were in the crowd. They were also celebrating Baisakhi, a festival. They aimed to peacefully object to these harsh rules.
Suddenly, with no chance for the crowd to scatter, General Dyer commanded his soldiers to shoot. They aimed at the closely packed people. Their shots rang out for close to ten minutes until they had no bullets left. This terrifying event caused hundreds of lives to be lost and injured thousands more. The Jallianwala Bagh massacre had deep impacts. It caused heavy outrage and criticism, both inside India and globally. The sheer heartlessness of the British forces and their disregard for innocent lives ignited the anger of Indians. It ignited a powerful wave of nationalism, strengthening the Indians’ determination to fight for freedom from British power. This massacre is a grim page in India’s story, it displays the sacrifices of those who fought for liberty and the tenacity of Indians in their journey for self-rule.
Significance of Massacre
People all over the nation stood up against British rule through large protests. The incident created ripples in society. One example is Rabindranath Tagore, deeply unsettled by the event, in his resistance to the British, gave up all his honors, including his knighthood. Udham Singh, a freedom fighter who survived the chaos and sustained injuries during the massacre, went on to take the life of Michael O’Dwyer at Caxton Hall in London on 13 March 1940. The local authority established the Hunter Commission to dig deep into the disturbance caused in Punjab, which occurred due to the massacre and immediately after. In March 2019, the Yaad-e-Jallian Museum was constructed to present an accurate depiction of the tragic event.

He led the fight against casteism in India, starting actions like the stand against priests, the temple entry effort, and more. This day matters to the people and leaders of India alike. Who is Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar?
Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, born on April 14th, hailed from a Dalit family. He’s renowned as the Father of the Indian Constitution, championing equal rights for Dalits and the underprivileged. His educational journey led him to prestigious institutes like Elphinstone College in Mumbai Columbia University in the US, also the London School of Economics in the UK. He wasn’t just the first Indian to earn a doctorate in economics abroad but also served as the principal at the Government Law College in Mumbai for several years. Not stopping there, Dr. Ambedkar was appointed India’s Minister of Law and Justice. He chaired the Constitution Drafting Committee. Finally, the Indian Constitution was adopted on January 26th, 1950. Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar is not just known as a social-political reformer but also as a beacon of equal opportunities in modern India. He was a pillar of strength for personal freedom. He openly criticized systems and societies promoting caste discrimination.
Significant Contributions of Dr. BR. Ambedkar
Dr. B. R. Ambedkar has made a remarkable impact. His fight to guard Dalit rights led him to host key events, like Equality Janta and Mook Nayaka. At independence on August 15, 1947, the Congress Government asked him to be the first Law Minister. On August 29, 1947, he took on the role of Chairman of the Constitution Drafting Committee to shape our new constitution. The Constituent Assembly adopted this constitution on November 26, 1949. Another vital contribution of his is the foundation of India’s Central Bank the Reserve Bank, due to his expertise in economics. He penned three books: “The Problem of the Rupee: Its Origin and Its Solution,” “Administration and Finance of East India Company,” and “The Evolution of Provincial Finance in British India.” His insight into the Indian economy was notable as an economist. Dr. Ambedkar spurred growth in agriculture and industry and boosted education and health within the community. His inspiration ignited the Dalit Buddhist Movement. Ambedkar Jayanti processions are carried out by his followers at DeekshaBhoomi in Nagpur and Chaitya Bhoomi in Mumbai. It is a customary for senior national figures, such as the President, Prime Minister and leaders of major political parties, to pay homage at the statue of Ambedkar at the Parliament of India in New Delhi. It is celebrated throughout the world especially by Dalits who embraced Buddhism after his example. In India, large numbers of people visit local statues commemorating Ambedkar in procession with lot of fanfare.
Over 25,000 people gather every year at midnight to celebrate jayanti with cake cutting and bursting of crackers at Samvidhan Chowk. Apart from that, events are held individually by all the Buddha Vihars in the city; one of the most prominent one being at Indora, helmed by Japanese priest Bhante Arya Nagarjun Surai Sasai, who will be addressing the devotees like every year at 9am at Deekshabhoomi. From around 5am, devotees will start pouring in at the sacred place.

This event also celebrates Punjab’s rich history and unique cultural traditions. Traditional Punjabi attire is worn, and folk’s dances like Bhangra and Gidda highlight the joy of the event.
Historical Importance: The significance of Baisakhi is rooted in history. It symbolizes a pivotal period in India’s development. Anandpur Sahib was the venue for a Sikh convention called by Guru Gobind Singh in 1699. Here, he initiated the first five Khalsa Panth followers. This marked an important step in the evolution of the Sikh community as a religious and social unit.

नागपूर : येत्या शनिवारी, ६ एप्रिल रोजी येत असलेल्या गुढीपाडव्यापासून शालिवाहन शक १९४१ विकारी सवंत्सराला प्रारंभ होत आहे. यानिमित्त सूर्योदयाला घरासमोर उंच जागेवर गुढी उभारून तिची पूजा करावी, असे महाराष्ट्रीय पंचांगकर्त्या विद्याताई राजंदेकर यांनी म्हटले आहे.
त्यांनी दिलेल्या माहितीनुसार, गुढीपाडवा म्हणजेच वर्षप्रतिपदा शककर्त्या शालिवाहन राजाने जी कालगणना सुरू केली त्याचे नवीन वर्ष शके १९४१ हे ६ एप्रिलपासून सुरू होईल. यादिवशी सकाळी कडुनिंबाची कोवळी पाने व फुले आणून त्याचे चूर्ण करावे व त्यात मिरे, हिंग, मीठ, जिरे, ओवा, गूळ हे पदार्थ घालावेत. त्याच्या लहान गोळ्या करून त्या भक्षण केल्यास आरोग्य चांगले राहते.
विकारी संवत्सराच्या वर्ष प्रवेश कुंडलीत कर्क हे चरराशीचे लग्न उदित असल्याने यावर्षी देशाच्या राजकीय, सामाजिक परिस्थितीत झपाट्याने स्थित्यंतरे घडतील. २ मे रोजी शनी व केतू एकत्र येत असल्याने उष्णतेचे विकार, उष्माघात, आगीपासूनचे अपघात वाढतील. षष्ठस्थानातील गुरु, शनी, शत्रुराष्ट्रांना जरब बसविणारे आहेत. तथापि, २२ एप्रिलला गुरूच्या वृश्चिक राशी प्रवेशानंतर समाजात कलह, धार्मिक बाबीवरून अशांती निर्माण होण्याची शक्यता आहे. मे ते सप्टेंबर या काळात शनी वक्री असल्याने सत्ताधारी पक्षाला कसोटीच्या प्रसंगातून जावे लागेल. उत्तर प्रदेश, मध्य प्रदेश, बंगाल, काश्मीर या भागात नुकसानकारक योग, नैसर्गिक आपत्तीची शक्यता आहे, असे राजंदेकर यांनी म्हटले आहे.
या वर्षात १६ जुलैला होणारे खंडग्रास चंद्रग्रहण भारताच्या मेदिनीय, मकर राशीतून होईल. तसेच २६ डिसेंबरला होणारे कंकणाकृती सूर्यग्रहणही भारताच्या मेदिनीय राशीच्या व्ययस्थानातून होत आहे. कलियुगामध्ये सहा शककर्ते आहेत. पहिला इंद्रप्रस्थामध्ये युधिष्ठिर झाला. त्याचा शक ३०४४ वर्षे. दुसरा उज्जयनीमध्ये विक्रम झाला. त्याचा शक १३५ वर्षे. तिसरा पैठण येथे शालिवाहन झाला, त्याचा शक १८ हजार वर्षे. चौथा वैतरणी नदीच्या काठी विजयाभिनंदन होईल, त्याचा शक दहा हजार वर्षे राहील. पाचवा गौड देशात धारातीर्थी नागार्जुन होईल. त्याचा शक चार लक्ष वर्षे राहील. सहावा कोल्हापपूर प्रांतात कल्की होईल. त्याचा शक ८२१ वर्षे अशी कलियुगाची एकूण ४ लक्ष ३२ हजार वर्षे आहेत. यापैकी आतापावेतो ५१२० वर्षे झाली असून, ४ लक्ष २६ हजार ८८० वर्षे शिल्लक आहेत, असेही राजंदेकर यांनी सांगितले.

Gudi Padwa traditional new year for Marathi Hindus.
Gudi Padwa is a spring-time festival that marks the traditional new year for Marathi Hindus. It is celebrated in and near Maharashtra on the first day of the Chaitra month to mark the beginning of the New year according to the lunisolar Hindu calendar. The word पाडवा (padava) or पाडवो (padavo) or पड्ड्वा/पाड्ड्वो (paddava/paddavo) comes from the Sanskrit word प्रतिपद or प्रतिपदा (pratipada) in Sanskrit, which refers to the first day of a lunar fortnight. The festival is observed with colorful floor decorations called rangoli, a special Gudhi flag (garlanded with flowers, mango and neem leaves, topped with upturned silver or copper vessel), street processions, dancing and festive foods.
Gudi means flag, erect flag on the houses as part of celebration in Maharashtra where its mainly celebrated. The word pāḍavā is derived from the Sanskrit word pratipad for the first day of each fortnight in a lunar month i.e. the first day on which the moon appears after the so-called “new moon” day (amavasya) and the first day after the full moon. A Gudhi is also hoisted on this occasion giving this festival its name. The term padva or padavo is also associated with balipratipad the third day of Diwali which is another celebration that comes at the end of the harvesting season.
Celebrations
The day of Gudi Padwa starts with the cleaning ritual, in which the house is fully cleaned (in case of villages, it is then covered with fresh cow-dung). Thereafter, women and children indulge in the drawing as well as coloring of intricate rangoli designs on the doorsteps. Usually, vibrant colors are chosen for the rangoli, in keeping with the spirit of the festival. Every member of the family wears new clothes and eats soonth panak and chana usal, the specialties of the day.
Other delicacies made on Gudhi Padwa festival include Shrikand and Poori. In the earlier days, family members used to start the day by eating the leaves of neem tree. However, the tradition is not as rigidly followed these days. Usually, people consume a paste of neem leaves (combined with ajwain, jaggery and tamarind). The leaves as well as the paste are believed to cleanse blood and toughen the immune system.
