Experts discuss the need for Indian families to adopt holistic well-being into their everyday routines

May 2021: Almond Board of California, today, hosted a session around ‘Holistic well-being: How can Indian families stay healthy in 2021’. The session stressed on the takeaways and learnings from the ongoing pandemic, and highlighted how families across India can revisit their diet and fitness choices, and instead adopt a variety of small changes to lead happier, fitter and healthier lifestyles as the year advances. These included things like, relooking at one’s overall fitness routines to make it sync with one’s lifestyle and long term health goals, balancing exercise routines with planned diets and mindful snacking, and including a handful of almonds to the daily diet to reap a mix of benefits, across weight and diabetes management, heart health and immunity amongst others.

The panel included well-known Fitness and Celebrity instructor, Yasmin Karachiwala, as well as Ritika Samaddar, Regional Head, Dietetics at Max Healthcare – Delhi and Sheela Krishnaswamy, Nutrition and Wellness Consultant. The panel was moderated by RJ Meha of ISHQ FM.

The discussion mostly centered on the learnings from the ongoing Covid19 pandemic, and how this has pushed families across the world and in India – to re-evaluate their nutrition, fitness and health goals. The panel stressed the need for families to adjust their daily habits and routines and move towards a more holistic approach to ensure better health for all members, by making fitness a top priority. The panel also spoke about the need to integrate a combination of fitness, nutrition and mindful snacking and all guests shared anecdotes from their personal experiences as well as recommendations for exercise routines, diet plans and alternatives to binge eating, relevant for modern Indian families. Through the session, panelists also deliberated at length on the increasing burden of lifestyle diseases in the country including ailments like diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular diseases, and the role that regular exercise, proper nutrition and dietary intervention can play in managing these better. Besides this, the discussion also touched upon the myths related to fitness routines or exercises relevant for particular age groups. Additionally, the panelists also shared insights around the deep rooted connect between fitness and snacking, and recommended healthy snacks like almonds which, which can further help in optimizing one’s fitness routine.

To reiterate the importance of daily exercise, and a committed fitness regime, Celebrity Fitness instructor, Yasmin Karachiwala also hosted a quick 10 minute segment where she demonstrated easy to do stretching exercise that people can do while working on the desk/laptop.

Commenting on the importance of striving to get a perfect balance between fitness and nutrition, Fitness and Celebrity instructor, Yasmin Karachiwala said, “Having experienced the Covid19 pandemic, a lot of us now realize the importance of staying fit and healthy. The pandemic also made us understand that we don’t need any expensive equipment, or a gym membership to stay fit. A brisk walk, a jog around the neighborhood or a quick high-intensity workout daily can be your fitness regime for the day.”
Highlighting the importance of nutrition, Yasmin said, “I always say – your health regime is 70% diet and 30% workout! The trick to making sure your family’s fitness is to adopt this mantra. Make sure to exercise for at least 1 hour every day, and balance this with eating right. Adding healthy foods like a handful of almonds to the diet is the best way to start. They pair well with your workout routine, as they are known to be high in protein, aid in weight management , and provide energy which makes them a tasty yet healthy pre and post workout snack, almonds are also known to contain several immunity supporting nutrients like copper, folate and zinc, which makes them a great food to have around the house.”

Ritika Samaddar, Regional Head – Dietetics, Max Healthcare – Delhi said, “While the pandemic had taken precedence over other things, it is a known fact that lifestyle diseases are on the rise amongst Indians, and according to a recent report this has only increased in the last year . In 2021, invest in your own and your family’s health by subscribing to a fitness app, or joining an exercise/dance class, or enrolling in a gym. Besides this, change your family’s food habits by reducing the intake of fatty and sugary foods which increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity. Instead, focus on consuming nuts like almonds, seasonal fruits, vegetables and probiotics that are nutrient-rich and add to the body’s overall health. Almonds are known to lower total and LDL cholesterol when included in a healthy diet and reduce levels of heart-damaging inflammation. Additionally, according to a study published in the British Journal of Nutrition, researchers estimated that for every 30 grams increase (approximately 1 serving) of almonds consumed daily, an estimated 10-year coronary heart disease (CHD) risk score was reduced by 3.5% .”

According to Sheela Krishnaswamy, Nutrition and Wellness Consultant, “There is no time like the present for families to reassess their lifestyle choices and set priorities. The first thing on this list should be to achieve holistic well-being for every member, while focusing on their fitness, nutrition, mental health and snacking habits. Start by exercising every day, making diet plans and sticking to them, and replacing unwholesome snacks with healthy options. My go-to snacking choice is almonds as they are one of the easiest foods to include in the diet. Besides this, almonds are known to have satiating properties and as per a study published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, participants who consumed 43 grams of dry, roasted, lightly salted almonds every day experienced reduced hunger and improved dietary vitamin E and monounsaturated (“good”) fat intake without increasing body weight .

While Covid19 swept into every corner of our everyday life, it is important to reevaluate the health and well-being of our loved ones. Families must make the necessary revisions that can add value to every member’s health by modifying their nutrition and lifestyle choices. By making lifestyle and dietary changes like making fitness a part of one’s daily routine and choosing a handful of almonds each day in place of less-healthful snacks, families across India can work towards being healthier and fitter.

The government aims to ramp up India’s daily testing capacity for COVID-19 to 45 lakh by end of June from the current capacity of 16-20 lakh per day, the Centre said on Thursday as a record 20.55 lakh tests were conducted in a span of 24 hours.

On augmenting testing for COVID-19 while ICMR has so far approved a home-based rapid antigen testing (RAT) kit manufactured by My lab Discovery Solutions Ltd, Pune, ICMR Director General Balram Bhargava said kits by three more companies are in pipeline and likely to get the approval within a week.

Mr. Bhargava said kits for home testing will be available in market in 3-4 days.

Besides, Mr. Bhargava said for ramping up capacity the ICMR has validated more than 105 Rapid Antigen Tests companies and approved 41 of them.

“We are doing 16-20 lakh tests this week and we have a capacity of about 20 lakh tests by end of the month and upto the end of next month we can have the capacity of upto 45 lakh because ICMR has validated more than 105 RAT companies and approved 41 of them and 31 of them are indigenous” he said.

Out of the 45 lakh tests, 18 lakh will be RT-PCR, while 27 lakh will be Rapid Antigen Tests.

More than 20.55 lakh tests were conducted in a span of 24 hours, the highest ever conducted in a single day in India.

He further said all the states have placed the order and they are rapidly enhancing their testing capacity.

“For home testing, you buy test kit from chemist shop then download mobile app, register and read user manual and then you conduct the test yourself and click mobile image and upload mobile phone gives test result. This ensures patient confidentiality, the data stored in secure server and linked with ICMR database,” he said.

In large cities, Mr. Bhargava said focus was mainly on RT PCR which is the standard test but in district level the backbone of testing has been TrueNAT and CBNAAT, while in rural areas RAT is the backbone of testing.

“In the second wave, we have to increase the RAT testing, we have written to all chief secretaries and they have acted upon it. Multiple 24X7 RAT booths to be set up in cities, towns and villages.

“RATS to be allowed at all government and private healthcare facilities (no accreditation required). RAT booths to be set up with the community in schools, colleges, community centres, RWA offices etc. All RTPCR and RAT test results should be uploaded on ICMR portal,” he said.

“We have encouraged testing at all primary health centres and sub centres which are 1,87,601 so testing. Those testing positive can be isolated immediately and those testing negative and are still symptomatic their samples need to be sent for RT-PCR testing so that will have to go to a facility. But if the positivity rate is high then RAT will be able to isolate them very fast,” he said.

Mr. Bhargava said there are 2,553 government and private COVID testing laboratories established across the country over the last 16 months.

Citing a study, he said that 50 per cent people do not wear a mask.

“Of the 50 per cent wearing a mask, 64 per cent cover their mouth but not nose, 20 per cent have it on chin and 2 per cent mask on neck,” he said, adding that 2,000 people were surveyed across 25 cities for the study.

Health Ministry Joint Secretary Lav Agarwal said a continuous decline in the COVID-19 active cases has been noted in the last 15 days.

“From being 17.13 per cent reported on May 3, the active cases now comprise 12.1 per cent of the country’s total infections. A positive trend in recovery has also been noted. The recovery rate which was 81.7 per cent on May 3 has increased to 86.7 now,” he said.

Mr. Agarwal said India has witnessed a consistent upward trend in weekly tests since mid February with average daily tests increased by 2.3 times in last 12 weeks.

“After a consistent increase in case positivity for 10 weeks, a decline in case positivity since last 2 weeks has been reported,” he added.

Mr. Agarwal said the country’s positivity rate in the last ten has been recorded less than 20 per cent and positivity rate was recorded at 13.31 per cent on Wednesday which was lowest in a month.

“Eight states have more than 1 lakh active cases, nine states have 50,000 to 1 lakh active cases and 19 states have less than 50000 active. A decline has been observed in six states which were major contributors to active cases in the country — Karnataka, Maharashtra, Kerala, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh Gujarat,” he said.

Seven states have more than 25 per cent positivity rate, while 9 states have between 20-25 positivity rate. Twenty-two states have more than 15 per cent positivity rate, 13 states have 5 to 15 per cent positivity rate and one state has less than 5 per cent positivity, he said.

Mr. Agarwal said the number of districts with a week-on-week increase in weekly tests and decline in positivity considered for the week has increased from 210 to 303 districts.

“Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi and Jharkhand are 10 states where a decline in cases and decline in positivity in the last 3 weeks have been observed,” he added.

Tamil Nadu, Meghalaya Tripura, Manipur, Nagaland, Sikkim, Mizoram are states showing a rise in cases and rise in positivity in last three weeks, he said.

Mr. Agarwal further said that there are 89 districts where a decreasing trend in cases is being noted and there are 123 districts where a decreasing trend in case positivity is being observed for last 3 weeks.

93-year-old “First Indian Woman” to donate her body for Covid-19 research

93-year-old "First Indian Woman" to donate her body for Covid-19 research

Kolkata: Jyotsna Bose, a 93-year-old trade union leader from Kolkata, became the “first woman” in the country whose body has been donated for medical research to find out the effects of coronavirus on humans, an organisation that spearheaded cadaver donation in Bengal said.
A statement issued by the non-profit organisation, ‘Gandarpan’, also said that Jyotsna Bose is the second person from West Bengal after its founder Brojo Roy, to have got a pathological autopsy conducted on her body at a state-run hospital here, following death due to COVID-19.

Another victim of the contagion, ophthalmologist Dr Biswajit Chakraborty’s remains have also been donated for the same purpose, making him the third such person in the state.

Jyotsna Bose’s grand-daughter Dr. Tista Basu said that the trade unionist, who had pledged her body through Brojo Roy’s organisation around 10 years ago, was admitted to a hospital in Beliaghata area of north Kolkata on May 14, and she died two days later.

“The pathological autopsy of my grandmother was conducted at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on Tuesday.”

“Hers is the first female body in the country donated for pathological autopsy following death due to COVID-19,” she told.

Dr Basu, who is pursuing her MD in pathology, said, “We do not know much about coronavirus as it is a new disease. We need to understand its full effect on organs and organ systems. Pathological autopsies help us in this quest.”

Jyotsna Bose(93) was born in 1927 in Chittagong in present-day Bangladesh.

During World War II, Bose’s father went missing while returning from Burma and the family went through immense financial crisis. She failed to complete her studies and took up a job as an operator at British Telephones.

Jyotsna Bose became involved in trade union movement shortly after, and participated in the 1946 posts and telegraph strike in support of the Naval mutiny.

She married prominent trade unionist Moni Gopal Basu later in life, and kept herself busy in social and political works after her retirement, her granddaughter added.

Amazon.com Inc hit with five new lawsuits of gender, racial bias

Amazon.com Inc hit with five new lawsuits of gender, racial bias
Amazon

Amazon.com Inc was hit on Wednesday with five new lawsuits by women who worked in corporate or warehouse management roles, and accused the online retailer of gender bias, racial bias or both.
The women, ages 23 to 64, accused Amazon of favoring men over women in career growth, allowing supervisors to denigrate them, and retaliating after they complained.

Two plaintiffs are Black, one is Latina, one is Asian-American and one is white. They filed their lawsuits in federal courts in Arizona, California, Delaware and Amazon’s hometown of Seattle.

An Amazon spokesman said the company has found no evidence supporting the accusations. He also said Amazon does not tolerate discrimination or harassment, and supports a “diverse, equitable and inclusive culture.”

The lawsuits were filed by the Wigdor law firm, which also represents a Black manager at Amazon Web Services who sued in March over alleged systemic discrimination.

Wednesday’s plaintiffs included Cindy Warner, a gay executive in that unit, who said a male manager openly called her a “bitch,” an “idiot” and a “nobody,” and that Amazon terminated her job after learning she had hired a lawyer.

Pearl Thomas, one of the Black plaintiffs, said a human resources employee downplayed concerns about her treatment by saying Thomas was upset by current events and that “my name is not Derek Chauvin,” the white former Minneapolis police officer convicted of murdering George Floyd.

The Wigdor firm has also represented women who accused now-convicted movie producer Harvey Weinstein of sexual misconduct, and Fox News employees alleging bias or harassment there.

In April, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos said his company needed to take care of employees better, and Amazon said it wanted more Blacks in senior and corporate roles.

Amazon ended 2020 with about 1.3 million full- and part-time employees.

The company is urging shareholders at its May 26 annual meeting to reject a proposal requiring an independent audit analyzing its “impacts on civil rights, equity, diversity and inclusion.”

Wedding Guests End Up Doing Frog Jumps For Lockdown Violation

Bhind: Guests attending a wedding in Madhya Pradesh’s Bhind district would not have imagined what they were made to do for attending the celebrations. A group of them were made to do frog jumps by the police who raided the wedding venue to check if lockdown rules were being followed.

Nearly 300 people were present at the wedding in the village of Umari, in clear violation of Covid lockdown restrictions. When the police swooped down on the venue, many of them managed to escape police rounded up some of them.

Those caught by the cops were made to do frog jumps on a street by the side of a field. A video shows around 17 people, all men, performing the act as punishment as the police stood and watched. A cop can be seen hitting a man on his back for not jumping the right way.

After the punishment, they were warned against attending any such gathering till lockdown restrictions and later, let off.

The boy’s photo first surfaced on social media platforms like Facebook, Reddit and Twitter two days ago. Since then, it has reached thousands of people.

The photo shows the schoolboy dressed in a green shirt, painstakingly spelling out “Khush rahiye” on the cardboard lid of a meal box. Next to him on the table are several meal boxes, each one featuring the two words in Hindi, followed by a smiley face.

“This boy’s mother cooks for Covid patients and this sweet boy writes ‘Be happy’ on each meal box for them,” wrote Twitter user while sharing the pic.

The tweet has collected over 12,000 ‘likes’ and hundreds of comments.

“Wow… what a cute gesture and beautiful handwriting,” wrote one Twitter user. “Sunshine amidst the storm!” said another.

Meanwhile, this is not the only small act of kindness that has earned praise on social media. Recently, a Canada woman’s post urging people to show kindness in tough times also went viral.

How are celebrities getting Covid medicines when states complain about shortage: Bombay HC

The Bombay High Court has expressed concern over the number of celebrities and politicians distributing Covid-related medicines and aid to those in need. The court asked who will guarantee the quality of these Covid drugs.

“We are concerned about the lives of our citizens. There cannot be any mileage, popularity or any other kind of mileage from this. We are deeply pained if needy patients are being deprived of it. This is a sorry state of affairs,” Chief Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice G S Kulkarni of the Bombay High Court said while going through the notes submitted by the Maharashtra government on celebrities and politicians procuring Covid-19 medicines for the needy.

The note said that the government had served show-cause notices (on procuring Covid-19 relief materials) to Mumbai Congress MLA Zeeshan Siddique and the Sood Charity Foundation (actor Sonu Sood’s NGO), but was yet to receive their replies. Hearing this, the high court said, “We aren’t impressed. By now you should have had recorded their (celebrities) statements. They don’t have any license.”

During a previous hearing, the bench was told by Advocate Rajesh Inamdar that patients approached Bollywood celebrities and politicians through Twitter when they failed to get medicines. The court had asked the Maharashtra government as well as the central government to say how investigational drugs like remdesivir and tocilizubam are being procured and distributed by politicians and celebrities while the state continues to complain about a shortage in supply.

Inamdar showed several tweets of Sonu Sood and Congress MLA Zeeshan Siddiqui distributing remdesivir vials within hours of such pleas. He also added that this was just the tip of the iceberg as there were many others doing this.

Additional Solicitor General Anil Singh appearing for the central government said that they will file a report on the issue but had not done so as procurement and distribution of remdesivir and medical oxygen, among other items, were the prerogative of a state and the Centre merely allocated such resources to states based on the latter’s demands.

“Who will guarantee that drugs being given by these personalities are of proper quality,” asked the court and further added that for these medicines, “Allocation is by Union, the collection is by state, where is the window of collection by these personalities? That is our anxiety.”

Both Centre and state have been given one week’s time to file a report.

Nagpur social media group helps Covid patients in Mumbai to get food

Nagpur: A social media group, engaged in humanitarian work along with civic administration, ensured four members of a family, admitted to the Covid ward of Saint George Hospital in Mumbai, got nutritious food.

In a chain of philanthropic actions by people who were strangers to each other, help was mobilized from Nagpur through an all-women ‘WE7 Care foundation’ which ensured delivery of food to the Mumbai-based family of an IT engineer.

It’s learnt, a woman posted a message in a social group having around 152 members helping others during the pandemic, requesting for food delivery to the family fighting Covid-19. She was approached by a colleague of the IT engineer.

“My two brothers, father and me are admitted to the hospital. We wanted some nutritious food at the hospital and hence we requested a colleague to do something. It was really intriguing that help was routed from Nagpur to Mumbai,” said the IT engineer.

The local group member contacted one Vikash Sharma from Mumbai, who had posted a message on Facebook offering help to anyone during the pandemic. Sharma, who has a group of around 350 social workers, contacted like-minded hotelier Nagesh Shetty from south Mumbai to help the family at Saint George hospital near CST railway station. “I twice delivered food to the family of four after getting a call as my hotel is close to the hospital,” said Shetty.

Social worker Neerja Pathania, who had taken up the initiative, said the motto of their group was to help those in need during the pandemic without knowing each other.

Australian fast bowler Aaron Summers charged with child sexual offence

Aaron Summers, the Australian fast bowler, has appeared in Darwin Local Court after being charged with child sexual offence. The cricketer, applied for bail in the Darwin Local Court on Monday after being charged with two counts of possessing child abuse material and one of using a carriage service to groom an underage person. Police alleged Summers’ phone had child sex abuse images and there was evidence the man had been trying to get ‘illicit photographs’ from up to ten children. On his mobile phone in the favourites folder there are a number of child abuse videos, some of which were recorded on the Snapchat application live with the victims and then they were saved and stored in the gallery of his phone. According to a report in the Sydney Morning Herald, Summers appeared in front of the Darwin Local Court with the police alleging that the 25-year-old’s mobile phone contains child abuse videos. “A matter was brought to the attention of NT Cricket and was immediately actioned in accordance with our member protection policy. In line with the policy the matter was referred to the relevant authorities and is now being handled by police,” SMH quoted a Cricket Australia statement as saying.

The Northern Territories Police Service have released a statement. Detectives from the Joint Anti-Child Exploitation Team (JACET) arrested a 25-year-old man in Fannie Bay on Friday afternoon for child abuse material. Police executed a section 3E Crimes Act 1914 (Cth) search warrant on the man and seized a mobile phone. “Police will allege that the man’s mobile device contained a number of videos containing child abuse material. There was also evidence that the man had been in contact with up to 10 children to attempt to procure further illicit photographs,” it added. Detective acting senior sergeant Paul Lawson also released a statement describing Summers’ behavior as “despicable”. “Young people should be able to enjoy their childhood without the fear of predators approaching them for their own appalling intentions. The Northern Territory Joint Anti-Child Exploitation Team will continue to work with national and international partners to keep the most vulnerable in our community safe,” the statement read. Summers, a right-arm pacer, has represented Hobart Hurricanes in Big Bash League and played three one-day for Tasmania as well. He grabbed the limelight becoming the first ever Australian cricketer to play in Pakistan’s domestic cricket turning out for Southern Punjab in Pakistan Cup.
