World NO Tobacco Day

WORLD NO TOBACCO DAY 2022: World No-Tobacco Day is an annual event held on May 31, each year, as part of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Health Organisation (WHO). It highlights the negative impacts of tobacco and its industry on human health and the environment and alerts people about the steps they can take to keep themselves and the environment safe from tobacco. Below, we look at the theme, history and significance of the event.

WORLD NO TOBACCO DAY 2022: THEME

The theme of World No-Tobacco Day this year is “Tobacco: Threat to our environment,” as mentioned in the UNEP website. Tobacco impacts both the health of countless people across the planet as well as the environment at large.

Smoke coming out of cigarettes and cigars doesn’t just stain people’s teeth, chewing tobacco. The highly addictive substance contains nicotine, which is known to cause cancer, diseases of the heart, lung and liver. Tobacco production harms the environment through pesticide use and deforestation.

WORLD NO TOBACCO DAY: HISTORY

As mentioned in the official WHO website, it was the year 1987 when the WHO member states created the World No-Tobacco Day. That same year a resolution was passed by the World Health Assembly for the creation of a World No-smoking Day. The following year, another resolution was passed by the same body establishing May 31 as World No Tobacco Day. The annual and global celebration has continued ever since.

Each year the campaign focuses on a key impact of tobacco use and tobacco trade, with the ultimate objective to dissuade people from their dependence on the product. This year, the focus is on how tobacco poisons our planet and its environment.

World NO Tobacco Day

WORLD NO TOBACCO DAY: SIGNIFICANCE

The campaign puts the spotlight on the damaging effects of tobacco on both active and passive smokers. It also underscores how the cultivation of tobacco is damaging our soil and water because of the use of pesticides. Cigarette filters contain microplastics which more often than not, are improperly disposed off, causing the accumulation of such toxic, man-made and non-bio-degradable material in the environment. Such issues make the event highly significant.

SECR cancels 35 trains without alternate arrangements

South Eastern Central Railway (SECR) has cancelled 35 trains without making alternate arrangements, causing passengers to suffer. The Railway has decided to cancel passenger trains in order to supply additional coal to power units in Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh. Due to summer vacations, schools are currently closed, and a big number of families are taking vacations during this period.

The season is summer. when reservations are difficult to come by.

Days after his security trimmed, popular Punjabi singer Moosewala shot dead in Punjab

Days after his security trimmed, popular Punjabi singer Moosewala shot dead in Punjab

Days after the Punjab government reduced his security cover, along with that of many others, Congress leader and popular Punjabi singer Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu Moosewala was shot dead near Mansa on Sunday.

Police said Moosewala, 28, was shot at while he was driving his SUV in village Jhawahar Ke in Mansa district with two others, and was declared brought dead at the Mansa Civil Hospital.

Punjab Director General of Police Viresh Kumar Bhawra said, “Moosewala left his house in Moosa village at 4.30 pm. Around 5.30 pm, he was driving his jeep, accompanied by two persons, when two vehicles that had been following him intercepted his vehicle and fired at him.”

On May 26, as part of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government’s security pruning exercise, Moosewala’s security cover had been halved from four to two, ostensibly to augment police force for ghallughara diwas (marked to protest Operation Bluestar).

The Punjab Police had ordered the withdrawal or pruning of security for 424 persons, including MLAs, religious leaders, dera heads and retired police officers. Among the religious leaders whose security cover was reduced or withdrawn include officiating Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh, the Radha Soami Satsang Beas chief, Takht Kesgarh Sahib Jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh, and Dera Sachkhand Ballan chief Sant Niranjan Dass among others.

Mansa Senior Superintendent of Police Gaurav Toora said that on Sunday, Moosewala did not take “the two commandos who were part of his security detail nor his private guards, telling them that he was going for a round”.

DGP Bhawra said the killing “appears to be the result of inter-gang rivalry as Moosewala’s manager Shagunpreet Singh name had surfaced in the Vicky Middukhera murder case.”

In August last year, Shiromani Akali Dal leader Vicky Middukhera was shot dead in a market in Mohali’s Sector 71. Police arrested three shooters, one of whom named Moosewala’s manager Shaganpreet. Shaganpreet has since been absconding.

DGP Bhawra said police are investigating the alleged role of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang in the killing. On Sunday, hours after Moosewala was killed, Canada-based Goldy Brar, allegedly a member of the Bishnoi gang, put out a Facebook post owning responsibility for the killing and alleging police didn’t act against the singer over Middukhera’s murder.

The DGP said that on the directions of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, Inspector General (Bathinda Range) has been asked to constitute a special investigation team to probe the incident.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann appealed for calm and said no culprit would be spared. “I am deeply saddened and shocked by the horrific murder of Sidhu Moose Wala..No culprit will be spared..My heartfelt sympathies and prayers are with his family and his fans all over the world..Appeal to all to remain calm,” he tweeted.

Reacting to Moosewala’s killing, Chief Minister Mann tweeted, “I am deeply saddened and shocked by the horrific murder of Sidhu Moosewala… No culprit will be spared… My heartfelt sympathies and prayers are with his family and his fans all over the world… I appeal to all to remain calm.”

Sidhu Moose Wala dead, Sidhu Moose Wala shot dead, Sidhu Moose Wala news, Sidhu Moose Wala indian expressMoosewala, who belonged to Moosa village near Mansa, was the voice of many superhit songs over the last few years. Earlier this year, he had contested the Assembly polls on a Congress ticket from Mansa, losing to AAP’s Dr Vijay Singla — the minister who was sacked by the AAP government and arrested earlier this week over alleged corruption charges — by a margin of 63,323 votes.

Moosewala had joined the Congress with much fanfare in November last year. With the party granting him a ticket from Mansa Assembly constituency, the Congress sitting MLA from the seat, Nazar Singh Manshahia, had revolted, saying he would oppose the candidature of the singer.

According to police sources, the 17-year-old victim had gone for a bath on Wednesday afternoon. At around 3 pm, she noticed a mobile phone recording her through the bathroom door. Acting swiftly, the girl raised the alarm. The accused Sharma used his cell phone to film the victim, police said.

E-bikes modified as buyers insist on high speed, dealers tell RTO

E-bikes modified as buyers insist on high speed, dealers tell RTO

Nagpur: E-bikes dealers in the city have claimed that buyers insist on modifying their electric vehicles to increase their speed limit. “Manufacturers too do modifications in e-bikes,” said dealers while admitting to the malpractices. They were in a meeting with officials of the regional transport office which has been detaining modified e-bikes.

Officiating RTO and deputy RTO Ravindra Bhuyar warned of action against dealers who alter e-bikes. “As per rules, RTO can levy Rs1 lakh fine on dealers and Rs 1 crore on manufacturers,” he said.

Representatives of around 30 dealers attended the meeting. Bhuyar gave them a week’s time to rectify the alterations done in e-bikes. “From June 1, a special drive will be launched,” Bhuyar told the dealers.

Bhuyar said as per the Central Motor Vehicle Rules, e-bikes with a battery capacity of less than 250 watts and a speed limit of 25 kmph are exempt from registration process including the motor vehicle taxes. But for this, the vehicles must have to be procured from government-appointed authorised agencies.

Also, it is necessary to get the ‘vehicle model test’ done from authorised testing agencies and obtain a ‘type approval test report’ of the bike for the exemption. But like other cities, flying squads of all three transport department offices — city, east and rural — have launched a special drive and detained around 30 e-bikes.

It has also came to fore that many e-bike dealers who are not authorised to sell battery operated two-wheelers with battery capacity of more than 250 watts were illegally selling them. “We found that several manufacturers through local dealers are illegally selling the e-bikes and later increasing the battery capacity of the bike and its range,” Bhuyar told TOI.

Earlier in the day, Bhuyar directed motor vehicles inspectors (IMVs) to submit their investigation reports on alterations in e-bikes. “It will help in taking action,” he said.
As per records, city RTO has registered 1,014 e-bikes — 1,913 in east and 642 in rural RTO. These e-bikes were sold by 35 RTO authorised dealers.

These industries resort to procuring diesel from fuel pumps using improper receptacles like barrels and bowsers which cause great losses in the form of spillage, pilferage, dead mileage, and manpower costs. Combining with the expertise of Repos Energy in fuel bowser business solutions, we are introducing a compelling product offering to cater to the emerging need of industries and do our bit towards nation-building,” Gupta said.

MVA Govt for failing to reduce Excise Duty on petrol, diesel : Fadnavis

petrol

“I do not understand how people talk about inflation without reducing tax on petrol and diesel,” Fadnavis said taking a dig at the Uddhav Thackeray Government.

Nagpur: Maharashtra Leader of Opposition Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday accused theMVA Government in the State of not bringing down fuel prices from its end and claimed that while the State charges Rs 30 as Excise Duty on a litre of petrol, the Centre imposes Rs 19.

Taking a dig at the Uddhav Thackeray Government over reducing VAT on petrol and diesel, Fadnavis said that the State Government was making an April Fool of the people in May by making bogus reduction of VAT on fuel.

“This government has worked to increase inflation in Maharashtra. I do not understand how people talk about inflation without reducing tax on petrol and diesel,” Fadnavis, who reached Nagpur from Mumbai, said..

“First of all, Sharad Pawar should answer that the State tax on petrol and diesel in Maharashtra is Rs 29 and the Central tax is Rs 19. Why don’t they reduce the state tax?” the BJP leader questioned.

In an attempt to control retail inflation, the Union Government had reduced Excise Duty, resulting in a drop in retail petrol price by Rs 9.50 per litre and Rs 7 per litre in case of diesel. The BJP has since been mounting pressure on the State Government to slash state excise duty further to offer relief to consumers.

“After the Union Government introduced cuts on Excise Duty; the Central and State taxes on a litre of petrol stand at Rs 19 and Rs 30 respectively. Please tell me who is now behind the higher rates of petrol and diesel,” Fadnavis said. The BJP leader further claimed that though there has been a concern at the international level about inflation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took the decision to reduce excise duty to offer some relief to the common man.

“The Centre did not touch the share of the State Government that earns from higher excise duties. The Centre will bear the loss of Rs 2.20 lakh crore annually from these cuts,” Fadnavis claimed.

The former Chief Minister also targeted the State Government over its failure to obtain a quota for the Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in the local bodies election. “It is this government’s sin to have lost the reservation for the OBCs. Despite several demands, the Maha Vikas Aghadi Government did nothing between December 2019 and March 2022, which is why we lost the legal battle to protect the political quota for the OBCs in the Supreme Court.”

Loan Fraud Case Nagpur Rural Police Attached 105cr Property

Biggest Froud

Nagpur: In a significant development, the Economic Offences Wing (EoW ) of Nagpur Rural Police has attached property worth Rs 105 crore including 119 acre agricultural land of a prime accused in a loan fraud case in which the accused had duped hundreds of gullible farmers by misusing their documents, a media report said.

The accused had fraudulently borrowed loans of Rs 5 lakh to Rs 50 lakh in the names of farmers and pocketed the money. Seven accused persons have been cooling their heels behind bars in jail for the last two years.

According to the report, the fraud came to fore when a group of farmers had filed complaints with the Jalalkheda Police Station in 2018, stating they have received notices for “defaulting” on loans worth Rs 40 lakh to Rs 50 lakh each from a public sector bank. However, the farmers claimed they have not taken any loan from the bank. The investigation of the case had unearthed major loan fraud by the accused persons in connivance with public sector bank officials and National Commodities Management Services Limited (NCML).

The police had arrested prime accused Rakesh Upendra Singh (44) and his wife Nutan Rakesh Singh (42), both residents of Welcome Nagar, Bokhara, Nagpur, Nilesh Sheshrao Dhopre (38), a resident of Sinjar village of Narkhed tehsil, Union Bank’s official Sandip Revnath Jagnale (34), a resident of Murmadi village in Bhandara district, NCML official Pawankumar Dhannaram Swami (38), a resident of Churu district of Rajasthan and Pravin Narayan Mondhe (47).

Informing about the modus operandi of the accused persons, the report stated that the accused Rakesh Singh owns warehouses in Kalmeshwar area. He tapped a farmer loan scheme by government banks to commit the fraud. As per the scheme, farmers are entitled to get a loan on the agricultural produce stored in the godowns or warehouses. A letter of NCML required for the loan from a public sector bank, the report said. Singh hatched the conspiracy in connivance with officials of NCML and banks. The accused Nilesh Dhopre was collecting 7-12 extract and Aadhar cards from farmers in the name of sanctioning a government scheme. Each farmer was getting Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000 against the photocopy of the documents. Singh was misusing the documents to procure the loan of Rs 5 lakhs to Rs 50 lakh from Corporation Bank in the name of farmers by managing NCML and bank officials, police said.

The loan amount was credited to bank accounts of farmers and the accounts were handled by Singh only. The investigators have discovered 350 such bank accounts handled by Singh himself.

The fraud continued smoothly for two to three years and Singh had amassed huge wealth through the scam. He had purchased 119 acre of agricultural land and also set up a college. The money borrowed in the name of farmers was also returned by Singh within a year. However, he started defaulting instalments of the bank after rates of agriculture produced crashed in the market. As a result, the farmers had received letters from the banks for non-payment of installment of bank loan worth Rs 50 lakh.
