Not Khans but Baahubali came to rescue of Bollywood this year

0

It looks like Baahubali came to rescue of Bollywood this year Baahubali: The Conclusion was probably the best thing that happened to the film industry this year. Amid many disappointments in the first half of this year, it was SS Rajamouli’s second take on Baahubali that proved to be the saving grace for both distributors and exhibitors.

Concurring with this fact, Rahul Puri, MD of Mukta Arts said, “We got 20 percent of our entire yearly revenue in just about 6 weeks of Baahubali’s run.”

The company reported its earnings for the first quarter of 2017 during which Mukta Arts’ exhibition business almost doubled its revenue. This was on the back of a strong content pipeline which lifted the exhibition segment and increased margins.

“Exhibition business is strongly related to the quality of content in theatres. Quarter one had Baahubali 2 that did phenomenally well and that helped to boost the entire space,” said Puri.

At a time when exhibitors and distributors are having a tough time as big-budget films are finding it difficult to bring back audience to theatres, Baahubali: The Conclusion proved to be a game-changer. According to a few producers, exhibitors and analysts, Baahubali 2 will inspire filmmakers and investors to mount more ambitious and bigger budget films.

A Box Office India report suggests the first half of 2017 has been a poor one with seven films succeeding and only one film, Baahubali: The Conclusion, standing above all. The film is the biggest blockbuster this century as it sold over 5.25 crore tickets in the Hindi language.

If only Hindi films are taken into account then Badrinath Ki Dhulhania fared well at the box office, it was the only super hit film, the report said. The other hit film was Akshay Kumar-starrer Jolly LLB 2, while Irrfan Khan’s Hindi Medium scored only in the metros. Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Raees performed well overseas but was weak at the Indian box office. Films like Tubelight and Kaabil made money for the makers but distributors suffered huge losses.

In the nine months this year around 24 big-budget films have flopped, as per a media report. After the disappointing performance of Jab Harry Met Sejal and Tubelight, film trade analysts are saying filmmakers are under the impression that superstars can sell bad content but looking at the current scenario it seems it doesn’t work that way. It is important for the content to speak for itself.

Apple vs TRAI: Apple Refuses Adding TRAIs DND App on iOS Store

1

Apple Refuses Adding TRAIs DND App, Apple and Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) are fighting over the user data that iPhone users in India have on their phone. TRAI argues that no smartphone company should be a guardian of the user data of its smartphones and should share it with apps that require that data to function. Apple has indicated that it believed the TRAI app is a potential risk to its user’s privacy.

Bloomberg reports that the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is unable to get its ‘Do Not Disturb’ tool into the App Store; it’s designed to crowdsource data about spam calls and messages, so as to help avoid unsolicited communication with telemarketers and the like. An Android version of the app is available on Google Play.

TRAI has an anti-spamming app which blocks the numbers reported by the users and then launches a strict action against the number. The app is readily available to Android users, albeit poor customer reviews. TRAI Chairman R S Sharma publically slammed Apple a few weeks ago and has now said, “Nobody’s asking Apple to violate its privacy policy. It is a ridiculous situation, no company can be allowed to be the guardian of a user’s data.”

Why Apple Denied TRAI’s DND App ?

Apple says that the app violates its privacy policy; the company hasn’t budged from its position on the matter even after half a dozen meetings with the agency. While the company says it’s concerned about keeping its users’ data private, it shares data with affiliates and partners.

Spam messages and calls are a usual trend in India and most of the users use TrueCaller app to manage spam. TRAI maintains a Do Not Disturb directory and uses its app to catch hold of more spam numbers. Apple has reportedly told TRAI that its app violates privacy policies that the company has for the app store. Sharma has said that this fight is not the government vs Apple but, Apple vs its users as the problem of who controls user data gets more prevalent than before. Recently, TRAI came out with a comprehensive paper on “data ownership” that it wants to be debated. In the paper, TRAI argues that the users should own their own data and should have a say on how their data can or should be used.

The idea of data ownership sounds good but in a nutshell, it is a double edged sword. On one hand, introducing data ownership will become the users the sole owners of their data and take a lot of power away from services such as Google, Facebook and more as they won’t be able to use the data the way want to. On the other hand, it can open to flood gates to weak data privacy as third party apps would just require a click of the ‘Accept’ button to access the desired information as an average user may not understand the jargon written in privacy policy documents.

Reduce stress
Not everything we want we get. We have to accept that there are things that we cannot control. Managing time is also of great importance too. We must allow ourselves enough time to get things done. Set a time during the day for relaxation.

Improve sleep
Avoid caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, and other chemicals that interfere with sleep. Equip your bedroom with a comfortable mattress and pillows. Sleep in a dark clean and quiet environment. One of the major reasons for improper sleep is stress. Stress Hormones reduce when you meditate regularly. As a result there is a calming effect on the mind and the sleep is deeper and more restful.

Meditation
Meditation has been linked to a variety of health benefits. It has been linked to changes in metabolism, blood pressure, brain activation, and other bodily processes. There is something that can definitely help you improve your healthy lifestyle quotient. It’s meditation, as a lot of people share. So let’s have a look at some of the aspects of a healthy lifestyle and how meditation can help you in these areas.

Positive thinking
People who think positively have an optimistic view of life that affects their health and well-being. Optimism has been shown to explain between 5–10% of the variation in the likelihood of developing some health conditions, notably including cardiovascular disease, stroke, depression, and cancer.

Living longer is something we can all be happier about. A positive outlook can influence more than just your mood. “People who are optimistic are more committed to their goals, are more successful in achieving their goals, are more satisfied with their lives, and have better mental and physical health when compared to more pessimistic people,” said Segerstrom.

The study, which looked at 607 patients in a hospital in Denmark, found that patients whose moods were overall more positive were 58 percent more likely to live at least another five years. These people exercised more, too. The scientists can’t say for sure if positivity led to exercise or if exercise improved mood, but we say that the important message is the same either way: Positive thinking and regular physical activity are really important for life (and beauty, too).

ESPNCricinfo reports that the fixtures are likely to be made official in “a day or two” according to a top BCCI official. Bangladesh vs Australia Second Test, Historic victory for bangladesh!

Bangladesh vs Australia, Bangladesh won the toss on Monday and elected to bat in the second Test as it pursued an historic series victory against Australia.

Historic victory for bangladesh! It’s all over for Australia! Bangladesh have pulled off the unthinkable. They’re overjoyed, and why not. Despite David Warner’s exceptional counter-punching efforts, the visitors have fallen short here. If anyone is looking to debate Test cricket’s health, he could throw yesterday and today as his opening argument. This is also Bangladesh’s 10th Test victory in their history, and furthers their growth in the longest format. Last year, they beat England at home and now they’ve overcome a strong Australian side. Lots of credit for the performance to Shakib Al Hasan, who finishes the match with 10 wickets. He’s been a true leader on the field, spurring the side on with his infectious energy. The young Mehidy Hasan and Taijul Islam too have been very effective in rattling Australia’s inability to play turn. Some patting on the back for Mushfiqur Rahim as well, who has used his bowlers smartly.

The Railways on Saturday felicitated two drivers of the Nagpur-Mumbai Duronto Express for their alertness and exemplary dedication to duty in hours of crisis which helped save many lives. The engine and nine coaches of the train had derailed between Vasind and Asangaon stations in on August 29 following a landslide, the fourth derailment in 10 days.

Acknowledging their presence of mind and the services rendered on the day of the accident, Railway Board chairman Ashwani Lohani said, “They displayed sincerity, dedication and performed like true railwaymen. And, we therefore recognise their services.”

Loco pilot Virendra Singh (52) and assistant loco pilot Abhay Kumar Pal (32), both employed with the Central Railway, were felicitated by Mr. Lohani in the presence of various senior officials and engineers of the national transporter. The drivers showed exemplary dedication to duty and displayed alertness and presence of mind. resulting in saving of hundreds of passengers by controlling the speed of the train, read the appreciation letter handed over to the drivers.

All the electrical masts for supplying power to the trains have been installed. Currently, testing of the power traction system is being done,” he added.

Nagpur Metro begins internal trial run

The source further said that Mahametro had sought seven approvals from RDSO. “We have received five of them—schedule of dimensions, design basis report (stations), design basis report (viaduct), track fastening system and signalling and telecommunication. The ones for track and traction are expected soon. In spite of being lengthy processes, the approvals were obtained very fast and now 75% of our documentation work is complete,” he added.
A formal function will be held here to mark the internal trial run. It will be attended by chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, union transport minister Nitin Gadkari and SBI chairperson-cum-managing director (CMD) Arundhati Bhattacharya. The common mobility card (CMC) of Mahametro will be released at the hands of these guests during the trial run function. Mahametro is trying to get a common date from the three.

The source further said that Mahametro managing director Brijesh Dixit had set a goal of starting commercial operations in November. “Total of 70% work of the stations is over. Work on signalling and telecommunications is progressing fast. After RDSO clears the Metro operations, we will apply to commissioner of Metro rail safety (CMRS) for approval for commercial operations. CMRS team will again check each and every thing and then clear the project,” he added.

Meanwhile, work on other stretches of the Metro is also going on at a rapid pace. The commercial operation of airport to Sitabuldi section is proposed in middle of next year. Work on construction of the viaduct is going on day and night. Once it is complete, Mahametro will begin track laying and installation of electrical masts and signalling equipment.

A separate trial run will be held for this section and only after it is cleared by RDSO and CMRS will Mahametro be able to start commercial operations.

Nagpur becomes first city with electric mass mobility system

Nagpur earned the distinction of becoming the country’s first city with electric fleet of 200 electric vehicles, including taxis, buses, e-rickshaw and autos.

“Promoting electric vehicles is our priority. We want electric buses, autorickshaws and other vehicles to ply in the country. We are engaged in initial talks with SoftBank for loans at low interest rate for a green project. We want to introduce 2 lakh electric buses for public transport,” Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said today.

He was addressing the media here before the launch of a pilot project for 200 electric vehicles, including 100 of Mahindra’s new e20 plus.

The Union minister, along with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, inaugurated India’s first multi-modal electric vehicle project at the Nagpur Airport Complex here.

With this, Maharashtra has become the first state to provide various incentives to e-taxis.

“Electric mass mobility ecosystem in Nagpur will bring about a transformational change in the automotive and transportation landscape in the country,” Gadkari said after the launch.

Speaking at the event, Fadnavis said, “To promote electric fleet, we have waived  road tax, and registration for all electric vehicles in the state, and we look forward to building Maharashtra as a model state for others to emulate in future.”

The pilot project here will commence with a 200-strong fleet, including 100 of Mahindra’s new e2o Plus vehicles. The rest will consist of vehicles sourced from other OEMs, including Tata Motors, Kinetic, BYD and TVS, among others.

Taxi aggregator Ola has already invested upwards of Rs 50 crore towards EVs and charging infrastructure, starting with 50 plus charging points across four strategic locations in Nagpur.

Gadkari said the target is to reduce the ticket fare of public transport by 50 percent in the country and charging these vehicles will not be an issue as charging stations are being set up.

The size of the automobile industry, which is at Rs 4.5 lakh crore, is estimated to grow to Rs 25 lakh crore and stress should be laid on promoting environment-friendly vehicles that causes minimum pollution, he suggested.

The state government will gradually ramp up the operations of electric taxis in all major cities of Maharashtra.

Pawan Goenka, MD, Mahindra and Mahindra, said the company will lead this charge in India with the government. Bhavish Aggarwal, co-founder and CEO, Ola, stressed that electric mobility in a multi-modal format will be the key towards realising the company’s mission of building mobility for a billion Indians.

With an eye on promoting eco-friendly transport, the government will be ready with its electric vehicle policy by December.

Accelerated adoption of electric and shared vehicles could save $60 billion in diesel and petrol cost while cutting down as much as 1 gigatonne (GT) of carbon emission for India by 2030, government think-tank Niti Aayog said in a joint report with Rock Mountain Institute earlier this month.

A group of ministers, constituted to prepare the draft plan for the electric vehicle policy, has submitted recommendations to the Cabinet secretary and is now preparing the draft plan.

A number of Indian companies have also shown interest in investing in electric vehicles and the related infrastructure.

The policy will include both light and heavy weight electric vehicles like cars and buses.

Dispelling concerns on lack of infrastructure for charging such vehicles, the minister said a charging station is being set up.

Gadkari also said he will soon be meeting Finance Minister Arun Jaitley to request for a lower tax slab for vehicles run on ethanol, bio diesel and bio CNG.

“I will also request him to reduce tax rate on hybrid vehicles in order to tackle air pollution in the long run,” he said.

The NITI Aayog report estimates that India can conservatively save up to 64 percent of anticipated passenger mobility-related energy demand and 37 percent of carbon emissions by 2030. At current oil prices, this will imply a net fuel cost saving of approximately Rs 3.9 lakh crore by 2030, the report said.

According to Gadkari, there are big plans to develop low-cost lithium-ion batteries in India and efforts are on to remodel the battery made by Indian Space Research Organisation to make it fit for use in electric vehicles.

Maruti Suzuki has evinced interest in developing lithium ion batteries, he added.

The government is aggressively trying to push sales and production of electric vehicles in the country through schemes such as FAME India, which have caught the fancy of Chinese automobile manufacturers such as BYD and SAIC that are already investing heavily in electric technology.

A 12 percent levy on pure electric vehicles (EVs) has been proposed under the goods and services tax regime, a move that reflects the government’s intention to push its adoption.

“It is our policy to encourage electric cars and buses. Shortly, I will be coming out with a policy regarding this. Hybrid cars should also be encouraged, it saves fuel,” he explained.

Electric and hybrid vehicles along with alternative fuel like ethanol are gaining traction as part of efforts to reduce India’s crude oil import bill.

“We import crude worth Rs 7 lakh crore. Electric, ethanol, bio diesel, bio CNG are import substitutes and cost effective, pollution free and indigenous too,” Gadkari added.

With an aim to promote eco-friendly vehicles, the government had launched the FAME India scheme in 2015 offering incentives on electric and hybrid vehicles of up to Rs 29,000 for bikes and Rs 1.38 lakh for cars.

India vs Sri Lanka 5th ODI, Team India eye series clean sweep

India vs Sri Lanka 5th ODI. A rampaging India will fancy their chances of completing a 5-0 whitewash of Sri Lanka when they face the beleaguered hosts in the fifth and final One-day International match here tomorrow.

The visitors already swept the Test series 3-0, and given their dominant run on this trip, would like to sweep the ODI series as well.

Sri Lanka are in danger of losing a second successive ODI series to India by a 5-0 margin. The last time these two sides played a bilateral series in November 2014, a depleted Lankan side lost 5-0 in India.

Their fortunes haven’t changed much since and another loss would be a serious body blow for the hosts in what has been a traumatic summer of cricket. They have already foregone the opportunity to automatically qualify for the 2019 ODI World Cup by failing to win two matches in this series.

That 5-0 win in 2014-15 was India’s last ODI series whitewash. Since they have beaten Zimbabwe 3-0 twice, as also beating them 5-0 in 2013.

Considering sterner opposition, India previously beat New Zealand and England 5-0 in 2010-11 and 2012-13 respectively, both series’ wins coming at home.

In fact, England are the only side to lose 5-0 twice to India (in 2008-09 as well) in the last decade, so the Men in Blue will be eager to add another entry to this short list.

Given the heat and humidity here, and the exertions of what has been a long if not arduous tour, the Indian team enjoyed an additional day off ahead of the fifth ODI.

There are no injury concerns and the same playing combination can expect to be retained tomorrow, with the likes of Manish Pandey, Kuldeep Yadav and Shardul Thakur given a further opportunity to impress.

Additionally, coach Ravi Shastri had spoken yesterday about the need to carefully manage workloads of bowlers across formats. It remains to be seen if Hardik Pandya will be given a break in this light, and Kedar Jadhav afforded another chance to impress, ahead of a long limited-overs’ schedule at home.

In light of the team’s experimentation and rotation policy, Ajinkya Rahane is the only batsman not to get game time in this series. With Rohit Sharma coming back and scoring runs, and Shikhar Dhawan in good form, the team management has so far not toyed with the opening combination.

Rahane, on the other hand, had won the man-of-the-series in the last ODI engagement in West Indies with 336 runs from five matches including a hundred and three half-centuries.

There is a chance that he could be given a game ahead of Dhawan in this final ODI, even if only to cement his spot as the designated third-choice opener.

This also puts the spotlight on KL Rahul who was given a middle-order role in the current ODI series, specifically keeping the preparation for the next World Cup in mind. So far that experiment hasn’t worked with Rahul returning scores of 4, 17 and 7 in his three outings.

Oddly enough, Rahul has fallen to Akila Dananjay in all three matches. While it will be a matter of concern for the team management, they will also want to afford him further opportunities to strengthen the case for a middle-order berth. Manish Pandey’s half-century in the fourth ODI gives the team additional leeway in this regard.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka are expected to make at least one chance to their playing XI. Skipper Upul Tharanga will be back in charge of affairs after sitting out the last two games owing to his suspension for slow-over rate. He is expected to slot into the middle order once again and Lahiru Thirimanne might be asked to open the innings instead.

It remains to be seen if the Lankan captain can inspire a serious challenge in this fifth ODI after a lacklustre summer. Most of all though, after two suspensions in three months, Tharanga will be looking to complete the 50 overs within the stipulated time.

Teams:

India: Virat Kohli (capt), Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Manish Pandey, Ajinkya Rahane, Kedar Jadhav, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Shardul Thakur.

Sri Lanka: Upul Tharanga (capt), Lasith Malinga, Dhananjaya de Silva, Dilshan Munaweera, Lahiru Thirimanna, Angelo Mathews, Niroshan Dickwella, Kusal Mendis, Milinda Siriwardana, Malinda Pushpakumara, Akila Dananjaya, Lakshan Sandakan, Thisara Perera, Wanindu Hasaranga, Dushmantha Chameera, Vishwa Fernando.

Eid al-Adha in India: Date, Significance, History, Celebrations and Feast

Eid al-Adha also called the “Sacrifice Feast”

Eid al-Adha is the second of two Muslim holidays celebrated worldwide each year. Id-ul-Zuha (Bakr-Id), which is also known as Eid al-Adha or Id-ul-Adha, is a festival that Muslims celebrate with special prayers, greetings and gifts. It is a gazetted holiday in India and is also referred to as the festival of sacrifice.

Thursday 31 August marked the start of an auspicious week for millions of Muslims around the world, as devotees commence the annual Eid al-Adha celebrations following the end of Hajj. Eid al-Adha 2017 in India began in the evening of Friday, 1 September and ends in the evening of Saturday, 2 September.

Eid al-Adha

History

Muslims around the world believe that Allah (God) commanded Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son Ishmael. Ibrahim followed God’s orders, but his son was replaced by a sheep at the last moment. Muslims celebrate this at Eid al-Adha. Eid al-Adha is called Id-ul-Adha in Arabic and Bakr-Id in the Indian subcontinent, because of the tradition of sacrificing a goat or “bakri” in Urdu. The word “id” derived from the Arabic “iwd” means “festival” and “zuha” comes from “uzhaiyya” which translates to “sacrifice”.

Celebrations and Feast

It honors the willingness of Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son, as an act of obedience to God’s command. Before he sacrificed his son In commemoration of this, an animal is sacrificed and divided into three parts: one third of the share is given to the poor and needy; another third is given to relatives, friends and neighbors; and the remaining third is retained by the family.

Eid al-Adha

People visit mosques and offer special prayers for peace and prosperity. After the prayers, sacrifices begin, which are then distributed among others. People meet and greet their loved ones, exchange gifts and feast together. Some of the delicacies that are prepared during this festival may include Mutton Biryani, Bhuni Kaleji, Mutton Korma, Mutton Keema, Chapli Kebab, Ghosht Haleem and Kheer.

Doklam standoff, Big Diplomatic Win For India, China agree to end border standoff

India and China have agreed to an “expeditious disengagement” of troops in a disputed border area near doklam where their soldiers have been locked in a stand-off for more than two months, India’s foreign ministry said on Monday.

“In recent weeks, India and China have maintained diplomatic communication in respect of the incident at Doklam. During these communications, we were able to express our views and convey our concerns and interests,” the ministry’s statement added.

The decision comes ahead of a summit of the BRICS nations – a grouping that also includes Brazil, Russia and South Africa – in China next month, which Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to attend.

Indian and Chinese troops have been confronting each other at the Doklam plateau near the borders of India, its ally Bhutan and China, in the most serious and prolonged standoff in decades along their disputed Himalayan border.

The Indian ministry said the two sides had agreed to defuse the crisis following diplomatic talks.

“In recent weeks, India and China have maintained diplomatic communication in respect of the incident at Doklam,” the ministry said in a statement.

India & China Agree To Pull Troops Out Of Doklam

“On this basis, expeditious disengagement of border personnel at the face-off site at Doklam has been agreed to and is on-going,” it said in a statement.

India-China relations

The bilateral relations between India and China also necessitate an urgent settlement of the row because both countries have a lot at stake. As two of the most prominent economies of the world, India and China need to work together to improve their mutual trade and also give leadership to the world in matters related to climate change following the withdrawal of the US from the Paris climate pact. India also needs to engage with China through its world-known soft power to influence its people and culture instead of comparing things more in terms of politics and military might.

India and China are frenemies rather than enemies despite the fact that China invariably supports Pakistan over India (that’s more of a strategy) and the powerful leaders of the two countries – Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping – know how important it is to engage with each other instead of preparing for a showdown
