Newton is India’s official entry to Oscars 2018

Director Amit Masurkar’s political satire “Newton”, starring Rajkummar Rao in the lead role, the Film Federation of India announced today. Newton is India’s official entry to Oscars 2018

The Film Federation Of India (FFI), in an official statement on Friday confirmed the nomination. The Hindi movie was the unanimous choice of FFI’s selection committee, headed by Telugu producer C V Reddy.

“‘Newton’ has been selected as India’s official entry to the Oscars. It was unanimously chosen from 26 entries this year,” FFI secretary general Supran Sen said. The National Award-winning actor Rajkummar Rao plays the lead in this indie drama.

The film also stars Anjali Patil, Pankaj Tripathi and veteran thespian Raghubir Yadav of ‘Mungeri Lal’ fame.

The decision to choose the film, which was released commercially today, for the Oscars was the proverbial “cherry on the cake”, said actor Rajkummar Rao. “It is a really honest film and we are already getting an overwhelming response. We will put all our energies to take the film forward,” the actor told .

Director Masurkar added that it was a double celebration for the team.”We are really happy. The fact that the film is releasing today doubles the happiness. We hope that people will now really head to the cinema halls to watch the film,” the director told .

Newton which is going to Oscars is made by Nagpur team of Manish Mundra and Rakesh Totla, his close relative.

” It is the rarest of case when a film is being released on the same day when selection for Academy award was also announced” said an ecstatic Totla, One of the Directors of production house is rakesh Totla, a Nagpur based Chartered Accountant. Also a Nagpur lad Trushant Ingle, who had Played the role of montu in critically acclaimed movie  ‘Budhia Singh’ is Casting Associate for ‘Newton’.

Shooting for Newton was a big challenge for the team as they were cut off from the rest of the world for almost 40 days. But Rao is happy that their hard work paid off. “It was not an easy film to make as we shot in the middle of nowhere in the jungles of Chattisgarh. But we had a great time. We met some wonderful local people. There was no mobile or internet, and all our energies were only working towards making this film. And when you get news (Oscar entry) like this, I am too happy that people are recognising our hard work that we have put in the film,” said the actor.
