Donal Bisht tears up during Tu Zakhm Hai rehearsal
When stories stem from situations of deep emotion, artists portraying those characters bear the impact of the same personally. Through the course of many such unconventional stories on screen, artists have spoken up about their process of dealing with these intense emotions. Donal Bisht, of Tu Zakhm Hai – an MX Serial, went through an emotional roller-coaster while getting into the skin of her character – Kavya. The 14-episodic serial has created quite a stir in the audience with its intriguing narrative and the complicated love – hate relationship of Kavya with Viraj (Gashmeer Mahajani). Donal Bisht opens up about the aftermath of the script and how she dealt with it.
“I was so engrossed in the story that it took me a while to come out of it” – said Donal. She further added saying,“Kavya is like the girl-next-door – she is sweet, polite, smart and focused on building an independent life for herself. When I read the script, I was hooked to it, she was the kind of character I’ve been waiting to play. We started prepping for the show and the more I got involved with the story, the more I felt emotionally attached to it. I’ve also studied psychology, so I completely understood Kavya, her vulnerabilities and empathised with her. In fact – there were times when I’ve teared up in rehearsals because I really felt for her dilemma. Portraying the role of this hostage who falls for her captor felt like being caught up in a storm of emotion and it started taking a toll on me.”
Tu Zakhm Hai follows the life of Viraj Trehan – a Hawala King who runs his illegal operations with an iron fist while hiding behind the facade of a real estate mogul. Circumstances lead Viraj to hold the fiercely independent and strong Kavya Grewal hostage as a special guest – caged in his dark embrace while love finds mysterious ways to bloom in this otherwise hopeless situation. But when two diametrically different worlds collide, there are consequences beyond imagination. Will Viraj be able to straighten his present and blur his past? Will Kavya and Viraj find common ground that will allow them to coexist in love?

The Supreme Court ruled on Monday that economic-based reservation does not contradict the fundamental provisions of the Indian Constitution while hearing a number of petitions contesting the constitutional validity of the 103rd amendment.
Chief Justice UU Lalit and Justice S Ravindra Bhat disagreed with the quota decision, which was supported by Justices Dinesh Maheshwari, Bela M Trivedi, and JB Pardiwala.
Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) now have a 10% reservation in government positions and admittance to educational institutions thanks to the amendment.
A five- judge bench of the Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice UU Lalit, pronounced the judgment. Reading out the order, Justice Dinesh Maheshwari said: “EWS reservation does not violate the equality code or violate essential feature of constitution and breach of 50 percent does not violate basic structure as the ceiling limit is here only for 16(4) and (5),” Justice Dinesh Maheshwari said.
He added: “Reservation on economic basis does not violate the basic structure or Constitution of India.”
Justice Bela M Trivedi, while concurring with Justice Maheshwari’s statement, said: “The quota requires to be treated as affirmative action by the Parliament. No violation of Article 14 or basic structure of constitution is noted.”
He added, “The EWS quota does not affect the rights of reserved classes by exempting them from its purview. The reservation was brought in to address inequalities created by the caste system. After 75 years, we need to revisit policy to live up to the philosophy of transformative constitutionalism.”
Justice JB Pardiwala, too, was in favour of upholding the quota. “The reservation is not an end, but means to secure social and economic justice… It must not be allowed to become a vested interest… The reservation should not continue for indefinite period of time so as to become vested interested.”
Justice Bhat, while dissenting to the judgment of the aforesaid judges, said: “Amendment practices constitutionally prohibited discriminations and strikes at the heart of the quality code. Allowing breach of the 50 per cent cap set on reservation can lead to further infractions which can result in compartmentalisation.”

INDIA, 7th November 2022: World Diabetes Day is celebrated across the globe on 14th of November to spread awareness around this health condition. The prevalence of diabetes is proliferating in the country and has posed a serious health concern. As per a report by International Diabetes Federation in 2021, over 74 million adults in India are living with diabetes. Based on the Indian Council of Medical Research – INdiaDIABetes (ICMR-INDIAB) study conducted in 15 states, the overall prevalence of prediabetes was 10.3% & diabetes was 7.3%, which makes it imperative to increase our awareness around this condition.
Preventing prediabetes is the key to control progression of Type 2 Diabetes. Making small and mindful changes in our lifestyle such as staying active, eating healthy can go a long way in preventing as well as reversing prediabetes. Studies show that increasing protein intake and lowering the consumption of carbohydrate-rich foods can have altering effects in blood sugar levels in human body. One such food is nuts like almonds. Almonds are a low glycemic index food and pack a host of nutrients like plant protein, dietary fiber, good fats and important vitamins and minerals such as vitamin E, magnesium and potassium making them a smart snack for those with pre-diabetes or type 2 diabetes. When eaten daily as a part of a healthy meal plan, almonds offer a wide range of health benefits ranging from weight management to heart health and beyond.
Leading Bollywood Actress and Celebrity, Soha Ali Khan mentioned, “Diabetes has become common and is a result of our sedentary lifestyle, unhealthy eating habits apart from other factors. This makes it intrinsic to make adequate changes to our lifestyles to nip this in the bud. On this World Diabetes Day, I would urge everyone to check their blood sugar levels. But most importantly, eat nutritious foods in the right quantities, cut out on high fat foods and exercise regularly. Making mindful eating choices such as substituting deep-fried snacks with something nutritious like a handful of almonds can make a difference to our health in the long run. Almonds also make for a healthy snacking option as they offer 15 essential nutrients such as protein, vitamin E, calcium, magnesium, iron amongst others.”
According to Fitness and Celebrity instructor, Yasmin Karachiwala, “Conditions like diabetes are an outcome of an unhealthy lifestyle, including poor eating habits and other factors. However, it is possible to control it if one can follow some simple things regularly along with the physician’s instructions. For instance, if one is trying to sustain a workout plan, choosing a form of exercise you enjoy will help keep you fit and motivated. My suggestion is, if you enjoy a particular dance form, like to run, or prefer to swim, or enjoy aerobics – do exactly that. Having said that, do consult a physician regarding your body’s endurance and requirements before opting for any fitness plan. Along with this, I also recommend supplementing one’s fitness regime by substituting unhealthy snacks with healthier options like almonds which make for crunchy and delicious pre or post workout meals. Not only will this keep you satiated, but consuming almonds regularly will also help in maintaining muscle.”
Speaking about the dietary measures for diabetics, Ritika Samaddar, Regional Head – Dietetics, Max Healthcare, Delhi, said “With a diet plan for diabetes, one should essentially go up on healthy nutrients like protein, fiber and complex carbohydrates and cut down on refined carbs, unhealthy fats and total calories. Therefore, a balanced diet comprising of pulses, dals, fruits, vegetables and whole grains can be beneficial for those with Type 2 diabetes. Along with this, eating in moderate quantities and at regular intervals is crucial to manage blood sugar levels. One can also opt for foods with high glycemic index like a handful of almonds as they can help in controlling blood glucose spike. The nutritional profile of almonds also makes them a great snack since they are a source of fats, vitamin E, protein, dietary fiber, calcium etc. Moreover, almonds have satiating properties which can keep hunger at bay for a long time and reduce craving for unhealthy foods.”
Laying special focus on prediabetes amongst adolescents, Nutrition and Wellness Consultant, Sheela Krishnaswamy, said, “According to a study published in 2018, the estimated prevalence of prediabetes in India is 14%. Indians have the highest annual progression to type 2 diabetes from pre-diabetes (about 14-18%), which calls for lifestyle interventions to help reverse this trend. Snacking on almonds can be a good change to begin with as it may help improve glucose metabolism in adolescents and young adults with prediabetes. In fact, as per a recent study, snacking on almonds as part of a healthy diet has been shown to be a beneficial food-based strategy to help prevent or delay the development of prediabetes in younger people.”
Integrative Nutritionist and Health Coach Neha Ranglani said, “Diabetics are more susceptible to developing cardiovascular disease or having a stroke. Research suggests that incorporating almonds in the diet can help improve CVD risk factors for people with type-2 diabetes. A study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association found that a daily snack of almonds, consumed as part of an overall healthy diet, maintained HDL cholesterol, and reduced central adiposity (belly fat) and LDL cholesterol, which are heart disease risk factors.”
Renowned Kannada actress, Pranitha Subhash said,“Having an active lifestyle and good eating habits can help to ward off several diseases including diabetes. So, I ensure that everyone in my family and I remain healthy by exercising daily and eating nutritious foods. Starting my day with a handful of almonds has been effective in maintaining my weight as it keeps me full for a long time. Almonds are also a source of plant-based protein and fat, which adds to the energy requirement through the day.”
Renowned Indian television & film actress, Nisha Ganesh said, “As an actor it is important that you stay fit, and because of the widespread lifestyle disorders that are plaguing us today, you need to strive towards fitness and good health. It is imperative to avoid unhealthy foods and favor nutritious foods instead. I personally focus on eating right overall, whether it is my meals or my snacks. Also, I have elders at home who have diabetes and am making it as a conscious everyday routine to keep me and family members healthy. I avoid eating unwholesome foods and always carry a small box of almonds. I have a handful of almonds and even pair the nuts with fruits or include them in other snacks to avoid monotony. Eating almonds everyday helps me to obtain some amount of essential nutrients such as vitamin E, protein, calcium, iron etc. which are beneficial for maintaining good health.”

Nagpur Smart and Sustainable City Development Corporation Limited (NSSCDCL) is preparing to install a new traffic signal system. The Rs 5.36 crore project will be implemented in the city by the Smart City Company before May 2023.
According to a media report, NSSCDCL Chief Executive Officer Chinmay Gotmare stated that the project will upgrade signals at 33 junctions on two major stretches – Wardha Road and Central Avenue.
According to a study conducted by NMC’s Traffic Department, Metro pillars obscure the view of 25 signals from Automotive Square to the Airport T-Point. Similarly, the view of 30 traffic signals on the east-west corridor was found to be obstructed. The traffic police had also stated that many Metro pillars, including those at Munje Square, Variety Square, and Dhantoli Square, had become obstacles, making the area prone to accidents. Metro Rail pillars and stairways take up a lot of space on the road.
The NSSCDCL has decided to replace traffic signals from Airport T-Point Samvidhan Square. Similarly, on Centr Avenue, it will replace traffic signals wit cantilever type signals between Samvidhain Square and Pardi Square, said Gotmar adding these signals will also have timers.
The Smart City Company plans to invest Rs 5.36 crore. The project was launched with two goals in mind: to improve mobility and to prevent motorists from leaving their engines running at intersections.
The visibility of traffic signals is currently hampered by pillars and tree branches. Existing traffic signals will benefit from the inverted L-shaped cantilever signals. The signals will be replaced by Onnyx Electronics Private Limited.
According to Gotmare, the new signalling poles will be erected while keeping proper road heights in mind so that heavy vehicle movement is not hampered. Meanwhile, the NMC Electric Department has installed two new traffic signals at the NEERI T-Point and the junction before the Narendra Nagar Railway Under-bridge.

Max Life launches its marquee ‘Smart Wealth Advantage Guarantee’ Plan
November 2022, New Delhi: Max Life Insurance Company Ltd. (“Max Life”/ “Company”), in partnership with Kantar- the world’s leading marketing data and analytics company, launched the second edition of the ‘India Retirement Index Study’ (IRIS). The study assesses urban India’s readiness to live a healthy, content, and financially independent retired life. Through a self-administered digital study, 3,220 respondents were surveyed across 28 cities comprising 6 metros, 12 Tier I and 10 Tier II cities.
At 46, West India’s Retirement Index (on a scale of 0 to 100) is the second highest in retirement planning after East at 51 followed by South at 43 and North at 41. Emotional preparedness in West stood at 58 indicating an increasing dependence on family, friends, and social support during retirement. Financial and health preparedness stood at 48 and 42, respectively.
V.Viswanand, Deputy Managing Director, Max Life Insurance said, “The second edition of our retirement study reveals that while a majority of India look forward to retiring, they are not adequately prepared for a strong financial, emotional and healthy retirement. While over 60% in West India express a positive sentiment, there is an emerging concern among 41% who feel inflation will exhaust savings during their retirement years. This is an opportunity for us to drive greater efforts on the importance of early financial planning, ensuring long-term financial protection of Indians.”
Outlook towards retirement
As per the study, 67% respondents in West India associated retirement with positive sentiments such as ‘more time to take care of family’, ‘tension free life’ and ‘more independence’. 33% associated it with negative sentiments, including 6% fearing they ‘might not be very fit & healthy’ and 5% citing they ‘might not have enough financial savings’.
Emotional support ranked low in the order of priority when it came to retirement planning – only 9% considered ‘emotional support’ the most critical aspect during retirement, 61% considered ‘health’ important and 29% regarded ‘finances’ as the most crucial.
Significant number have started investing for retirement
62% respondents have already started investing for their retirement. Top three reasons driving investment in financial products included ‘financial stability for children’ (36%) ‘investment giving good returns in the near future’ (36%) and ‘take care of family in medical emergency’ (35%).
Improved perception towards fitness; preventive checkups need attention
With a 4% jump, 47% in the region are hopeful of being fit and healthy in their retirement years. With a marked improvement from 33%, a strong 38% regularly participate in fitness activities. However, on the downside only 61% have undergone regular health check-ups, with 48% taking check-ups annually and 36% between 2-3 times in the last three years.
Dependence on family increases; majority view financial independence during retirement
Despite the trend of nuclear family households continuing, 42% will be dependent on family during retirement – an increase from 35% seen in IRIS 1.0. Additionally, a significant 46% believe they will be financially independent during their retirement years.
While 47% in the region believe retirement planning is the first thing one should plan for when they start working, 86% respondents above 50 years believe they should have started investing for retirement earlier.
To financially protect Indians during their retirement years, Max Life Insurance announced the launch of Max Life Pension Fund Management Limited in August. Establishing the pension fund management subsidiary is a critical lever of Max Life’s growth strategy of becoming a dominant player in the retirement space. Additionally, the life insurer plans to introduce products focused on annuity and retirement, enhancing the focus on driving opportunities in the segment.

A strong third quarter lifts gold demand to pre-pandemic levels
The World Gold Council’s latest Gold Demand Trends report reveals that gold demand (excluding OTC) in the third quarter of 2022 hit 1,181 tonnes, up 28% year-on-year. Strong demand pushed the year-to-date total to its pre-COVID levels. Gold demand was bolstered by consumers and central banks, although there was a notable contraction in investment demand.
Investment was down 47% year-on-year, as ETF investors responded to a challenging combination of markedly higher interest rates and a strong US dollar with significant outflows of 227t. These movements, alongside weakness in OTC demand and negative sentiment in futures markets, hampered gold’s price performance – contributing to an 8% quarter-on-quarter drop in the price during Q3 2022.
Despite these headwinds, gold continued to hold favour with retail investors who reacted to different market cues and turned to gold for its status as a store of value amidst rampant inflation and geopolitical uncertainty. Investors sought to hedge inflation with bar and coin investment, driving total retail demand up 36% y-o-y. This was supported by significant purchasing in Turkey (up more than fivefold y-o-y) and in Germany (up 25% y-o-y at 42t), but also from visible contributions across all major markets.
Jewellery consumption continued to rebound and is now back to pre-pandemic levels, reaching 523t – 10% higher compared to Q3 2021. Much of this growth was spearheaded by India’s urban consumers who drove up demand 17% y-o-y to 146t. Similarly impressive growth was also seen in much of the Middle East, with Saudi Arabian jewellery consumption up 20% since Q3 2021, and United Arab Emirates up 30% for the same period. Chinese jewellery demand also saw a modest 5% increase y-o-y driven by improved consumer confidence and a dip in the local gold price, prompting the release of some pent-up demand.
Just as consumer gold demand firmed, central bank buying picked up significantly with estimated record purchases of nearly 400t in the third quarter. This pattern reflects insights from our recent central bank survey, in which 25% of respondents said they intended to increase their gold reserves in the next 12 months.
Turning to supply, mine production (net of hedging) was up 2% versus Q3 2021, with gold mining seeing its sixth consecutive quarter of growth. By contrast, recycling was 6% lower y-o-y in Q3, as consumers held onto their gold in the face of surging inflation and an uncertain economic outlook.
Louise Street, Senior Markets Analyst at the World Gold Council commented:
“Despite a shaky macroeconomic environment, demand this year has reflected gold’s status as a safe haven asset, underscored by the fact that it has outperformed most asset classes in 2022.
“Looking ahead, we anticipate central bank buying and retail investment to remain strong and that could help offset potential declines in OTC and ETF investment that may prevail if the dollar strength persists. We also expect to see jewellery demand continue to perform strongly in some regions such as India and Southeast Asia, while the technology sector will likely witness further decline in the face of economic deceleration.”

NMC plans intelligent traffic signalling system to overcome congestion
Nagpur: Taking a serious note of chaos and slowed down movement of traffic every time one approaches the traffic signal, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation has now plans to set up an Intelligent and Integrated Traffic Management System (I&IMTS) with an aim to end waiting time at traffic signals, according to a report in a local English daily.
According to the report, the officials of the civic body are readying with plans to provide respite to Nagpurians from endless stoppages and stagnation while they are on streets. So very soon the citizens of the Second Capital can look forward to seamless movement on city roads once the I&ITMS is commissioned, says the report.
The I&IMTS is part of a Rs 197 crore project submitted by a committee headed by Chief Secretary to resolve the issues common to urban space in the country, encroachments, traffic snarls, congestion on roads, obstacles in smooth movement of traffic etc. The report was given in principle approval by the Urban Development Department (UDD) following which the civic body moved ahead with the implementation part.
As per the report, the project file is going to be forwarded to Home Ministry for allocation of funds for the I&IMTS, it is identified as one of the short term measures. The Committee headed by the Chief Secretary suggested some short term as well as long term measures for overcoming problems in better lives of citizens. The Committee came into being during hearing of writ petition 57/2010 at Nagpur Bench of Bombay High Court. The senior officers of State Government were aided in decision making by the comprehensive mobility report submitted by M/s KPMG Services Pvt. Ltd. wherein it listed measures for overcoming the problems in urban management.
The entire system is going to be operated on Internet of Things (IoT) wherein the thrust is on providing a real time green signal by quick analysis of the traffic movement at the squares. The cost of IoT based micro controllers is pegged at just over Rs. 1.60 crore and would cover 11 traffic corridors in the city through which vehicular movement is going to be regulated to provide real time savings and real time green signal on the stretch.
At present the traffic signals are pre-programmed with 180 seconds rotation and as per the pre-fed format they turn amber to green and red as per the fixed operating system. The traffic stretches identified by the consultant after studying the vehicular movements in city are Central Avenue, West and East High Court Road, North Ambazari Road, Khapri to Samvidhan Square, Samvidhan Square to Automotive Square, Samvidhan Square to Gittikhadan Square, Palm Road, Great Nag Road, Ring Road.
The main thrust is on cutting down travel time through intelligent traffic management and the same would cool down the frayed nerves of citizens who often end-up hitting ‘roadblocks’ at red signals which are a problem of plenty on long thoroughfares. The main problem is mixed vehicular traffic wherein each vehicle has different acceleration and horsepower ratio that results in mismatch of speed and all this ends-up in traffic snarls on major thoroughfares. This is sought to be overcome by leveraging the innovations and deployment of technological tools, said people familiar with the project. I&IMTS is just first one part of the mega project aimed at improving the living standards in the Second Capital of the city and the entire component is pegged at Rs. 197 crores by M/s KPMG that recently submitted its report.
The micro controller component of IoT will be affixed at NMC’s administrative buildings in Civil Lines, while the operational arena would be City Operations Centre (COC) that gets live feed through the 3600 CCTV cameras affixed at strategic locations across length and breadth of the city. With IoT, NMC plans to have green corridors on bustling city roads by real time calculation of data feedings to adjust the signals for maintaining even traffic flow resulting in ending the unnecessary detentions. The I&ITMS would end traffic congestion that is now leaving citizens quite frustrated and moreover results in burning of costly fuel due to continuous red despite the fact that on the other side the traffic flow has reduced.
