CoronaVirus News:

Supreme Court to hear applications in BCCI matter in August

BCCI

The Supreme Court Wednesday said it would hear after two weeks the applications which have raised issues relating to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

The matter came up for hearing before a bench comprising Chief Justice S A Bobde and Justice L Nageswara Rao.

The advocates appearing for cricket associations of Tamil Nadu and Himachal Pradesh told the bench that they have filed applications in the matter and they should be listed for hearing.

“I am appearing for Tamil Nadu Cricket Association. We have filed an IA which is not listed today. So, kindly direct that our IA be listed for hearing in the court,” senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Tamil Nadu Cricket Association, told the bench.

Senior advocate Harish Salve, appearing for Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association, also said that application filed by them has not been listed.

The bench said these applications would be taken up for hearing after two weeks.

Recently, the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) has also moved the top court seeking modification of its 2016 order and to enable it to annually or biennially undertake financial, compliance and performance audit of the BCCI and state cricket associations.

The CAG, in its application, has sought modification of the July 18, 2016 order by which the apex court had accepted the recommendations of Justice R M Lodha committee, including the one regarding inclusion of a nominee of the CAG in the apex council of the BCCI and also in the governing council of Indian Premier League (IPL).

It has said that out of the 35 state cricket associations, only 18 have requested nominations till date and these have been made by the CAG while the remaining 17 are yet to approach the nominating officers.

Seeking reconsideration of the apex court’s 2016 directive, the CAG has given suggestions in the application “to ensure better redressal of concerns of the court and also to ensure more effective implementation of the recommendations of Justice Lodha committee.”

It has said that being the supreme audit institution of India, the CAG’s specialization is audit.

“Therefore, the CAG may be considered for intervention in the affairs of BCCI/state cricket associations only for the purpose of audit – either as a routine e.g. annual, biennial etc or as and when directed by this court,” it said.

In its July 18, 2016 order, the apex court had agreed with Justice Lodha committee’s recommendation to include a nominee of CAG as a member of BCCI, saying it would bring in transparency and financial oversight into the affairs of the national governing body for cricket.

While upholding the recommendations of the panel, the apex court had brushed aside the objection of BCCI that inclusion of these officials at the state level and in the national cricket governing body would amount to government interference leading to its de-recognition by the International Cricket Council (ICC).

The Lodha committee was constituted in January 2015 by the apex court to examine and make suitable recommendations for effective working of BCCI and state cricket associations.

IPL likely to have commentary from home

IPL

The IPL broadcaster is toying with the idea of introducing “virtual commentary” in the upcoming franchise-based league after being emboldened by its successful recent experiment in an exhibition match.

For a live game at Centurion Park in South Africa on Sunday, Irfan Pathan was doing commentary from his Baroda home, Deep Dasgupta from Kolkata and Sanjay Manjrekar from his Mumbai residence.

Being able to commentate from his home for a game taking place thousand of kilometres away, former India all-rounder Pathan called the experience nothing short of “magical”.

In a world that is changing everyday due to the COVID-19 pandemic, IPL broadcaster Star Sports has experimented with virtual commentary for a 36-over exhibition game featuring three teams at Centurion Park.

It was not just the commentators as the crew also logged in from all parts of the country with the director sitting in Mysore.

The experiment was fairly successful, notwithstanding a few teething issues. It could be a regular feature in the upcoming IPL, if not for the main feeds in Hindi and English, at least for growing regional feeds like Tamil, Telugu and Kannada to start with.

“It was an extraordinary experience though we were worried throughout because the internet speed can fluctuate and that affects the voice quality. Anything can happen anytime in live cricket and with technology not fully in your control, it can be tricky but Star did a wonderful job,” Pathan told PTI.

“Though this was an exhibition game, everyone took it very seriously as they all wanted the show to resume (after months of break).

“Star is usually very thorough with its planning and execution but commentary from home in the IPL will be a massive challenge,” said the former pacer, who had to lock himself in a room to not get distracted on the job while his son knocked on the door from time to time.

The idea of commentary from home was created out of necessity amid the current COVID-19 situation, ensuring not just safety of the commentators but also cost effectiveness.

Pathan feels there is no substitute to commentary from the ground but part of the panel commentating from a remote production facility in Mumbai during the IPL is not new and is something that was implemented successfully last year.

The broadcaster produces as many as 10 feeds for the IPL with Hindi accounting for two-third of the overall viewership.

A broadcaster industry expert told PTI that commentary from “anywhere in the world” can be a regular feature going forward.

“Remote production has evolved a lot, and technology has enabled it to be to be at par with on site production if not better. Commentary from home is a step forward in that regard and that way anyone can log in from anywhere. It opens up to the world to you.

“Being on the ground is important but when you have a production in place where the commentator could see everything that he would see from the ground, at times with as many as 25 camera angles at his disposal, he can even see more than he would normally see at the ground,” the expert argued.

For the 3TC Solidarity Cup in South Africa, there was no option but to commentate from home. Considering the internet connectivity is not the best in India, all commentators had their internet speed upgraded from 5 mbps to 20 mbps, which is a minimum requirement for live production.

It is much easier to be in sync when you are sitting next to each other while commentating and creating the same chemistry was a challenge from home during IPL, said Pathan.

“We rehearsed it a day before the game just to test internet quality. We had screens put but we could not see each at all times, so when to pause and when to start talking was a challenge but we pulled it off.

“At times, there was delay in the feed, so there could be overlapping in that scenario. Overall, we did alright but when you are on the ground, it takes your commentary to the next level.

“Commentary is not just about the game anymore, it is all about the cricketers. There is so much detailing and analysis nowadays. Commentary from home is surely an option but not sure how often we can use it during IPL,” added Pathan.

Nagpur: Hospitalised husband and wife at home die of Covid within an hour of each other

A 66-year-old man and his wife (60) died of Covid-19 within an hour of each other in Nagpur on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday.

Their 39-year-old son, who also tested positive, has been hospitalised.

On Wednesday, their 33-year-old daughter-in-law, and 14-year-old grand-daughter also tested positive, and both have been quarantined. The only member in the family to have tested negative is their four-year-old grandson.

On Monday, the 66-year old man started feeling uneasy. He was taken to a private hospital, where his condition kept deteriorating. He underwent a Covid-19 test, which was positive. His wife and son were also tested.

“Late at night, his wife also started feeling uneasy but before she could be shifted to the hospital, she died. About 15-20 minutes after her death, the family got a call from the private hospital, who told them the 66-year old man had also died,” said senior BJP leader and family friend Chotu Bhoyar.

Bhoyar added, “Around 3.30 am on Tuesday, the reports of mother-son duo also came positive. So, we admitted the son to the Government Medical College and Hospital. The couple’s funeral had to be conducted by municipal staffers on Tuesday afternoon.”

Bhoyar said both the deceased were severely hypertensive and diabetic.

Subsequently, all the families in the apartment scheme where the family lives were also tested, and one person, who tested positive, had to be hospitalised.

“The couple’s son is asymptomatic and is under treatment at GMCH. His four-year old son tested negative, but his 14-year old daughter and 33-year old wife have tested positive and have been quarantined,” Bhoyar said.

Bhoyar accused the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) of “complete mismanagement” of the crisis, saying, “After the woman’s death, they didn’t even wrap her body for many hours. The other person from the apartment scheme had to wait for four hours before he could get a bed in GMCH.”

The number of Covid-19 cases in Nagpur has been growing at a fast rate, with 144 and 122 cases reported on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively. The district saw six deaths due to Covid-19 on Tuesday and one on Wednesday, taking the death toll to 61. The total number of cases has reached 3,293.

Municipal Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe has warned that he might impose another 15-day lockdown in the city.

Explained: How some countries are wooing the tourists back

tourists

Despite a rising number of COVID-19 cases, governments across the world have begun working towards easing border restrictions to kick-start international travel in hopes of reviving the coronavirus-hit tourism industry.

Many countries are partnering to form exclusive travel ‘bubbles’ or ‘corridors’ in order to strategically reopen borders for tourists amidst the pandemic. Countries like the UK, New Zealand, Australia, Estonia, and Lithuania have all lifted restrictions for international travellers visiting from a few select nations.

Earlier this month, the European Union announced that it would soon be reopening its borders for tourists visiting from 15 countries outside the bloc. Algeria, Canada, Japan, Rwanda, Serbia, and South Korea were all included in the list.

However, in the midst of an unprecedented epidemiological crisis, tourists worldwide are reluctant to go abroad as the health risks associated with international travel appear to far outweigh the benefits of a leisurely summer vacation. To encourage tourists to set aside their fears and embark on both foreign and domestic travel, popular tourism destinations from around the world have introduced a host of incentives like discounts on flights and hotel stays, travel vouchers and even full refunds in case of a COVID-19 diagnosis.

Here are some countries, which have incentivised foreign travel for tourists:

Uzbekistan: The Uzbekistan government has promised to pay $3,000 to any tourist who contracts COVID-19 while visiting the country. The amount will cover the entire cost of medical treatment, and is part of a larger government strategy to welcome visitors back to the country.

“We want to reassure tourists they can come to Uzbekistan,” Uzbekistan’s tourism minister to the UK Sophie Ibbotson said in a statement. “The government is so confident that the new safety and hygiene measures being implemented across the tourism sector will protect tourists from Covid-19, that the president is prepared to put money where his mouth is.”

International travel to Uzbekistan from low-risk countries like China, Japan and South Korea is set to commence later this month.

Italy: In April, the southern Italian island of Sicily announced that it would cover half of flight costs and a third of hotel expenses for travellers planning to visit the scenic destination. It also offered free tickets to visit museums and archaeological sites.

Italy was one of the first countries in Europe to experience the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in February, this year. With over 35,000 deaths, it reported one of the highest tolls in the world. Due to the global health crisis, Sicily reportedly lost over 1 billion euros in tourism-related revenue.

Japan: Japan has launched its ambition “Go To” campaign to boost domestic travel after the pandemic crippled the country’s otherwise thriving tourism industry. The campaign provides subsidies of up to 50 per cent on all domestic travel spending — including, travel costs, accommodation, visiting tourist attractions and shopping within Japan.

The “Go To” campaign, which was officially launched on Wednesday, is expected to continue in the country till spring 2021. Due to a steadily rising number of coronavirus cases in the city, Tokyo has been excluded from the programme. Residents of Japan’s capital and those who wish to visit the city will not be able to avail of the government’s travel subsidies.

Mexico: In southeast Mexico’s Cancun, tourists can avail of two free nights of accommodation for every two nights they pay for as part of the ‘Come to Cancun 2×1’ campaign. Travellers will also receive a refund for one additional plane ticket, to encourage them to bring a companion for their beach vacation.

According to the Association of Hotels in Cancun, Puerto Morelos and Isla Mujeres, foreign tourists who are planning a holiday to Mexico can participate in a number of social media contests through which they stand the chance to win lifetime travel certificates to visit Cancun.

Cyprus: The Mediterranean country of Cyprus has vowed to cover the entire cost of accommodation, food, drink and medication for all tourists who test positive for COVID-19 while visiting the island nation.

“The traveler will only need to bear the cost of their airport transfer and repatriation flight, in collaboration with their agent and/or airline,” the Cypriot government announced in a statement released in May. The cost for their co-travellers will also be covered entirely, the government said. The country has also set up a 100-bed hospital exclusively for travellers who contract the illness while on vacation.

Greece: Greece is luring foreign tourists by slashing taxes on flight tickets. After effectively mitigating the impact of the pandemic, the country cut the Value Added Tax (VAT) on all modes of transport from 24% to 13%.

“The tourism period begins on 15 June, when seasonal hotels can reopen. Let us make this summer the epilogue of the (COVID-19) crisis,” Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced. “We will win the economy war just as we won the health battle.”

On July 1, 235 flights carrying tourists from across the world touched down in Greece’s international airports for the first time since the pandemic began.

Other countries have also introduced incentives to encourage tourism. The Portugal government has announced that foreign travellers will be tested for free upon arrival. Meanwhile in Bulgaria, tourists will no longer have to pay to access loungers, umbrellas, or tables while sunbathing on the beach.

India to undergo two-week quarantine period in Adelaide: CA acting chief

India

India will have to undergo a two-week quarantine period, most likely in Adelaide, once they touch down in Australia for the much-anticipated tour later this year, said Cricket Australia acting chief Nick Hockley.

Hockley’s statement is in complete contrast to the views of BCCI president Sourav Ganguly, who had already made it clear that he was not in favour of a two-week quarantine period for the Indian team once they disembark in Australia.

Following the official postponement of this year’s T20 World Cup in Australia, Hockley said all the players and support staff will be provided with the best of the facilities to train within quarantine rules.

“The two-week quarantine is pretty well-defined. What we are working on is making sure that even within that quarantine environment, the players have got the absolute best training facilities, so that their preparation for the matches is as optimal as it can possibly be,” Hockley was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.

“We’ll obviously take the guidance of the health experts and the authorities. Whether it’s a hotel on-site or hotels in close proximity to venues, it’s certainly about creating that environment where we are minimising risk of infections and creating a bio-secure environment is the absolute priority.”

The website reported that not just the visiting Indian team but also the IPL-returned Australian cricketers will have to serve the mandatory quarantine period.

The current series between England and West Indies, which has marked resumption of international cricket, is being played in a bio-secure environment with the teams’ accommodation arranged on-site.

“There’s a huge amount at stake if we are unable to do that. Certainly the fact that the Adelaide Oval has a hotel…it does provide a facility not dissimilar to Old Trafford or Ageas Bowl where the hotels are integrated into venue,” said Hockley.

In these circumstances, the Adelaide Oval and its newly constructed hotel, built on the ground’s eastern side, is considered as the best place for creating a bio-bubble.

But Hockley said with a rapid spike in COVID-19 cases in the Indian sub-continent leading to travel restrictions, the team india will have to follow all the protocols laid down by the Australian government and the ICC.

“It’s widely known and it’s unlikely that international travel restrictions would have lifted by the time that India will be due to come into the country,” he said.

“Clearly there will be testing regimes. We will be able to test people before that they get on to the plane and it is the nature of the situation of making sure we have the quarantine arrangements in line with government and health authority protocols.

“The key thing for the players is that there’s regular testing and that we appropriately quarantine them when they come in and all of those plans are currently in development.”

Now that that T20 World Cup is postponed, the BCCI is in all likelihood will hold the postponed IPL during the vacant September-November window, in all probability in the UAE.

“I think the BCCI have made no secrets that they are considering what that means for the IPL,” Hockley said.
“For us it’s about getting a bit of an understanding and certainty around what that means. Clearly in a normal course, some of our best players are obviously top picks for those IPL teams.

“It’s a bit premature to speculate on that. We need to understand what the plans are if any and once we understand that we will make decisions accordingly.”

Nagpur ‘honey trap’ audio; Man purportedly speaking in tape arrested but in another case: Police

honey trap

Amid the letter war between former chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and state Home Minister Anil Deshmukh, one of the persons purportedly talking of “honey-trapping” senior BJP leaders in the controversial audio tape that has rocked the city’s political circles was arrested on Sunday.

According to a press note issued by the Crime Branch, however, the arrest was made in a different case — Sayyad has a few other cases registered against him, it said. Deputy Commissioner of Police Nilesh Bharne said, “Sunday’s arrest is in a property grabbing case. Sayyad has four offences, including rioting in a hospital, against his name.”

Asked if he would be arrested in the audio tape case too, Bharne said, “It relates to defamation. We will question him about that too.”

Sayyad was allegedly talking to another person in the audio tape about a plan to honey-trap city Mayor Sandeep Joshi and senior corporator Dayashankar Tiwari. The tape has led to several rounds of allegations and counter-allegations between the BJP and Deshmukh.

First, Fadnavis had written a letter to Deshmukh seeking a probe into the matter. Deshmukh had later written to Fadnavis saying that Sayyad was a BJP worker and the “honey-trap” plan was a result of BJP’s internal dispute. Deshmukh had also alleged that Sayyad had business relations with former BJP minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule and former BJP MLA Sudhakar Deshmukh. Both had strongly rebutted the claim and had sought Deshmukh’s apology.

Fadnavis had retaliated saying Sayyad has been seen in photographs with NCP leaders Sharad Pawar and Ajit Pawar and even with Deshmukh himself. He had alleged that Deshmukh precluding the audio to be a result of BJP’s internal dispute was pre-judicial to the probe and he would be constrained to move the Chief Justice and Registrar of Bombay High Court if fair probe wasn’t conducted into the case.

On Sunday, Deshmukh wrote back saying, “I haven’t met this person (Sayyad) in the last five years. So, your allegation has pained me a lot. Such opportunist persons don’t belong to any party. This you have yourself said in your second letter and yet you have given this issue a political colour.”

Deshmukh further says, “You said you would move the CJ of Bombay HC. A probe is already underway. If you don’t have any faith in it, I am ready to get it done by any senior police officer of your choice from the state.”

Covid-19 impact: ‘No training, can’t afford even milk’, young athletes run out of hope

athletes

He is one of India’s most promising middle-distance runners but he may now have to give up athletics to support his family of six. She is an Asian youth gold-winning long-jumper but wants to take a break to help her father, an autorickshaw driver. He is an Asian youth bronze medallist but fears that he will end up selling bananas on a cart in the market.

The COVID shutdown in sports, with no training for months, is beginning to wear down the country’s young athletes, many of whom are from underprivileged families without organisational support.

“Attendance has dropped drastically. We have many talented students who can’t make it to the ground because they don’t have a vehicle or can’t afford bus fare. Many might quit,” warns coach Purshotam who trains some of Delhi’s top junior athletes for free.

Purshotam’s trainees include Meraj Ali, 19, who represented India at the Asian Youth Meet in 2017. Living in a one-room rented home in East Delhi’s Trilokpuri, Ali says his family of six, including two teenage sisters and an elder brother, has been struggling to cope with the economic distress.

With his brother having been laid-off by an app-based cab operator last month and the earnings of his deaf-mute father, a daily wage labourer, not enough to run the kitchen, the 1500m specialist says his racing days might be over.

“My father had to get a kidney removed last December. He needs rest but has to work to feed us. If things don’t improve, I will have to join him and that would be the end of my athletics dream… We have stopped having tea at home, even milk is a luxury we can’t afford,” he says.

In Chennai, long-jumper Thabitha Philip Maheswaran, a double gold-medallist at the 2019 Asian Youth Athletics Championships in Bangkok, is contemplating a “break” to support her family. “We barely scraped by during the lockdown. An NGO supports me but they have cut the allowance drastically due to shortage of funds. My father drives an auto rickshaw and is the sole breadwinner of the family. But he was home during the lockdown and it was difficult to even get three meals a day,” Thabitha says.

Lokesh Kumar, the 2019 U-14 Delhi middle-distance champion, who has to change three buses to reach the training ground, is now worried about putting food on the table. “My father is a rickshaw-puller and my mother works as a domestic help. They don’t get regular work these days. During the lockdown, we didn’t have food so we used to drink warm water and go to bed,” he says.

Bronze medallist at the 2019 Asian Youth Athletics Championships, Ali Ansari, has been forced to take over his father’s fruit cart in Mahipalpur on the edge of Delhi. “My father had no work during the lockdown and business is at an all-time low. I am the eldest son and I have to support my family. I have a feeling that I’ll now end up becoming a kela wala (banana seller),” says the 19-year-old.

Then there’s Harendra Kumar, the 1500m national youth champion last year, who may have to start working in the farms back home in UP. “I don’t know for how long I can live in Delhi,” he says.

Harendra lives with his coach Vipin Kumar, who has been training athletes from an economically weaker background. “My mother called me yesterday and said her knees are hurting from working in the fields. I feel so helpless and sad. I cannot continue like this, without training. One more call from my mother and I will quit,” he says.

Athletes by day, daily wagers by eve

Trilok Kumar,19, has been moon-lighting as an auto-driver to keep fund his athletics dreams. The Delhi state medalist leaves for training at 4:30 am, wearing his kit under the uniform. During the lockdown, with no source of income, he has survived on the free ration distributed by the state government.

“I have to pay rent for the auto whether I ride it or not. I carry my kit along in the auto and whenever I drop someone near a park, I just go in and practice. I don’t want this to be my fate. I don’t want to end up becoming an auto driver for good. I want to train harder and achieve something in sports. It is getting difficult for me to sustain my athletic career,” Trilok says.

Among the hardest hit is Meraj Ali’s training partner, Rahul, the 2018 Delhi 10,000m silver medallist. The 22-year-old lost his father when he was four and has been working night shifts at the Delhi Milk Scheme facility as a crate loader for the last nine years. His work starts at around 11 pm and goes on till 4 am when he completes his quota of filling 1,100 crates with milk packets from a freezing cold storage room.

“I didn’t take up a day job because I have college and training. My body hurts in the morning after all this work but I have to push myself to get up and train after just two hours of sleep. If I don’t work, I can’t pay rent or even manage my bus fare to the training ground. Since the virus outbreak, my duty days have been almost halved and so has my salary. If I can’t reach the ground, how will I continue training?” he asks.

“Loan application form for agricultural credit for PM-KISAN beneficiaries”

Actual case load of COVID-19 patients in the country is only 3.42 lakhs

COVID-19 patients

The actual case load of COVID-19 cases in the country is only 3,42,756, as on date. More than 6.35 lakhs (63.33%) of the total cases have recovered.

India, being the second most populous country in the world with 1.35 billion people, has 727.4 cases per million. On the global scale, cases/million population in India are 4 to 8 times less than some European countries.

The case fatality rate at 18.6 deaths/million of the country is one of the lowest in the world. The collaborative efforts of all States/UTs for house-to-house surveys, contact tracing, surveillance of containment and buffer zones, perimeter control activities, aggressive testing and timely diagnosis has resulted in early identification of the infected persons. This has helped in early treatment too.

India has followed a standard of care protocol for the differentiated categorisation of COVID-19 patients- mild, moderate and severe as clearly formulated in the Clinical Management Protocol of Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW). The effective clinical management strategies have shown to yield positive results. Almost 80% of the asymptomatic and mild cases have been advised home isolation under medical supervision. The moderate and severe patients are being treated in either the Dedicated COVID Hospitals or Dedicated COVID Health Centres. The strategy of home isolation for the mild and asymptomatic patients has ensured to keep the hospitals unburdened, where the focus has been on treatment of the severe cases and reduction of fatality. It is also notable that less than 1.94% of the cases are in ICUs, 0.35% cases are on ventilators and 2.81% cases are on Oxygen beds.

Medical infrastructure to ensure quality treatment of the admitted patients is being continuously augmented across the country. As a result of concerted efforts, the COVID-19 Hospital Infrastructure to treat COVID-19 is stronger today. It has 1383 Dedicated COVID Hospitals, 3107 Dedicated COVID Healthcare Centres, and 10,382 COVID Care Centres. Together they have a capacity of 46,673 ICU beds. 21,848 ventilators are deployed in the hospitals in all States/UTs. There is no shortage of N95 masks and PPE kits. The Centre has supplied 235.58 lakh N95 masks and 124.26 lakh PPE kits to State/UTs/Central institutions.

Enrolment of farmers under PMFBY for Kharif-2020 going on in full swing

Pradhan Mantri Yojana

The enrolment of farmers under Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) for Kharif-2020 season is going on in full swing in various States and UTs of the country. Government of India has made enrolment free for all the farmers who only need to pay premium amount. Farmers can get their food crops (cereals and oilseeds) insured at a minimal premium rate of 2% of sum insured, and commercial and horticulture crops at 5% of sum insured in Kharif -2020. The remaining premium will be subsidised by the Centre Government and States. The cut-off date for ongoing Kharif 2020 season in few States/UTs may end by 31st July 2020.

In order to motivate the farmers, the Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Shri Narendra Singh Tomar has appealed to them to get enrolled under PMFBY through video message and requested all farmers to protect themselves against financial loss due to crop failures/damages as a result of natural disasters. (Minister’s full message to all farmers can be viewed on PIB’s YouTube channel at : https://youtu.be/b9LooMrHdEk)

The Scheme ensures protection of crop loss for entire cropping cycle, from pre-sowing to post-harvest activities. Farmers are encouraged to enrol for the Scheme at the earliest to avail the coverage against prevented sowing due to any unforeseen calamity. In addition, there is comprehensive risk coverage against drought, floods, inundation, landslides unseasonable rainfall, hailstorm, natural fires, and cyclone for the standing crop as well as coverage against hailstorm, cyclone and unseasonal rainfall for post-harvest crop.

In February 2020, the Government of India approved revamping of PMFBY in order to address some previous challenges in the implementation of the crop insurance scheme. The Government made the scheme voluntary for all the farmers from Kharif-2020 onwards. Earlier, the scheme was compulsory for all the loanee farmers. Now, farmers with loan dues can opt out of the scheme by submitting a simple declaration to their bank branch seven days before the cut-off date of enrolment.

Any farmer who wishes to get enrolled under PMFBY should contact his nearest Bank, Primary Agricultural Credit Society, Common Service Centre (CSC)/ Village Level Entrepreneurs (VLEs), Office of Agriculture Dept, Representative of Insurance Company or directly online through the National Crop Insurance Portal (NCIP) at www.pmfby.gov.in and Crop Insurance App

Farmers need to carry Aadhaar number, bank passbook, land record/tenancy agreement, and self-declaration certificate to complete the enrolment process. This season, all farmers enrolled under the Scheme will be intimated about the status of their application through regular SMS on their registered mobile numbers.

In a bid to ensure hassle-free enrolment of farmers, the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare provided training to 29,275 officials from banks, insurance companies, Common Service Centres (CSC), State Level Bankers’ Committee (SLBC), Village Level Entrepreneurs (VLEs), State and District level Agriculture and ATMA officials etc. Besides this, insurance companies have also provided training to different stakeholders. The Ministry also aims at providing training to 600 executives of Kisan Call Centres.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare has taken a slew of steps to create awareness among the farmers about the Scheme. Different insurance companies in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and State Agricultural Departments have launched a massive campaign across the country. Different activities such as local level awareness meetings, display of banners and posters at important locations, distribution of pamphlets, IEC Vans, advertisements in local and national newspapers, Mass Media Campaign among others, are being conducted to create awareness at the grassroots level.

The PM Fasal Bima Yojana is designed to protect farmers from natural calamities, pest or insect attack and diseases, and help them get back on their feet by providing financial support through claim settlement. All farmers are encouraged to enrol under PMFBY to avail the benefits of crop insurance as a protection against crop loss due to unforeseen natural calamities.

Law movie review: A jaded courtroom drama

Law movie

Law movie star cast: Ragini Prajwal, Mandya Ramesh, Avinash, Krishna Hebbale
Law movie director: Raghu Samarth
Law movie rating: 1.5 stars

A few minutes into the film, a gang-rape survivor approaches a police station in the middle of the night to report the crime. She is met with demeaning jokes about women, unsympathetic treatment, harsh judgement and the usual victim-blaming questions: What were you doing out so late in the night?

And the victim-shaming parade is led by a police inspector, played by Mandya Ramesh. The cop uses his dubious laughter to add insult to injury that begins to get on your nerves.

The opening scene of Law is a complete bust. It doesn’t make you feel anything as the whole set-up is shabby. It is staged and performed poorly. And then, the survivor’s father walks into the police station. The character is played by another senior actor Avinash. And he walks into the police station as if he couldn’t care less about his daughter’s predicament. And he says something like this, “Oh, please, stop making a big fuss out of it. Just, forget all about it and come home with me.”

Now, I get it, director Raghu Samarth wants to underline the fact that not all crimes against women get reported because of the social stigma and the family’s fear about: “what will people say?” But, just having a good idea or a noble intention to show it, is not good enough. As a director, he should make the idea come to life as powerful as possible. And that is where Raghu fails as a filmmaker.

And Ragini Prajwal’s unconvincing performance doesn’t make the film any better.

Law offers a jaded gaze at crimes against women and a woman’s effort to get justice within the confines of law. The film looks and sounds like a worn-out daytime soap opera. In its nearly two-hour run, the film doesn’t have a single moment that makes us feel the pain, horror and trauma of sexual crime survivors.

No need for CBI probe in Sushant death case: Maharashtra Home Minister

There was no need for a CBI probe into the death case of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput as the Mumbai police were capable of handling the matter, said Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh on Friday.

The police were also examining the angle of “business rivalry” in the case, he said.

Rajput, 34, was found dead in his Bandra apartment in Mumbai on June 14 and what the police claimed was a case of suicide. In the initial investigation, the Mumbai police had found that the actor was under medication for depression.

On Thursday, Rajput’s friend, actor Rhea Chakraborty, in a tweet, demanded a CBI inquiry to understand what “pressures” prompted Rajput to take the extreme step of suicide.

Chakraborty said though she has “complete faith” in the government, a CBI inquiry would help bring justice to the case.

Talking to PTI, Deshmukh said the Mumbai police were conducting a detailed inquiry into the actor’s death and also recording statements of people concerned.

“There was no need to give the case to the CBI. Our police officials are capable and doing the inquiry in right way. We are also examining the angle of business rivalry,” said Deshmukh.

So far, the police have recorded the statements of more than two dozen people, including Chakraborty, filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Bollywood casting director Mukesh Chhabra and Rajput’s family members, as part of probe into the suicide, which jolted the Hindi film industry.

Rajput starred in films such as ‘Shuddh Desi Romance’, ‘Raabta’, ‘Kedarnath’ and ‘Sonchiriya’. But his most prominent role came as cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni in the biopic, ‘MS Dhoni: The Untold Story’.
