Nagpur: On the occasion of World AIDS Day, Dr. Vaibhav Agrawal, Consultant Wockhardt Hospital– Internal Medicine and Critical Care speaks about the evolution of HIV Treatment to spread awareness about the diseases still being considered as a taboo by many. World AIDS Day is observed on 1st December each year to spread awareness about this chronic condition. HIV or human immune deficiency virus attacks the cells of your body that help fight against infections and diseases. Hence, the person becomes vulnerable to other conditions and diseases like bacterial, viral, or protosol infection.
“The risk of HIV infections to healthcare workers after a needle stick exposure through infected blood is approximate to the tune of 0.3-0.5%. This risk increases if a larger volume of blood is exposed. Exposure to other body fluids like tears, blood, saliva, and urine also carries a smaller risk”, says Dr. Vaibhav Agrawal Wockhardt Hospital. “Precautions, as being followed universally and safety devices are mainstays in the prevention of infection after exposure to the HIV. Antiviral drugs offer some protection. Thus, preventive measures should not be directed only against HIV infection but also creating right awareness”, he added.
Dr. Agrawal also informed that with reformed approach, team of Wockhardt Hospital has contributed in lives of several HIV cases.
The positive evolution that has taken place in the treatment of HIV with good counseling, useful approaches looking at reducing the transmission from one person to another has reduced the stigma of HIV in society. A patient is learning to live the chronic disease with the physician’s handholding, good counseling, and proper nutrition.

The sneak peek of Sony Entertainment Television’s upcoming show ‘Dhadkan Zindaggi Kii’ has created intrigue because of its thought-provoking concept. With Additi Gupta portraying the lead role of Dr. Deepika, the show takes the audience on an inspiring journey of an independent woman who challenges patriarchy beginning right from her family, society and her workplace to fulfil her dreams. Playing a pivotal role and adding further challenges in Dr. Deepika’s career while she serves as the chief surgeon will be Dr. Abhay Sathe’s character essayed by actor Vidyut Xavier.
Shedding some light about his character as Dr. Abhay Sather, actor Vidyut Xavier said, “I am glad to be a part of Dhadkan Zindaggi Kii, that wants to change the mindset when it comes to gender disparity in a male dominated society. When I heard about Dr. Abhay’s character, I knew this was the role for me since I am like Abhay in real life, so bringing alive this character felt very natural. My character is very likeable as he is jovial, confident, ambitious and holds his family in the highest regards. Due to a bitter past, he holds prejudice towards women who use their femineity to climb the ladder, and this leads to issues between Dr. Deepika and him. The chemistry between the two loggerheads is surely something to watch out for. The only challenging part was getting into the shoes of doctor because one needs to get the nitty gritty right, so to ensure I do justice I watched a lot of medical dramas and I am thankful to the creators for giving me this chance. It’s been a delight working on this show and hope the viewers enjoy it.”
Dhadkan: Zindaggi Kii’ is set to premiere on 6th December, every Mon-Fri at 10 pm only on Sony Entertainment Television!
A new report by the World Gold Council highlights the role of its members, many of the world’s most forward-thinking gold mining companies, in contributing to socio-economic development in the countries and communities where they operate. Collectively, WGC member companies contributed$37.9bn to the GDP of the countries where they operate in the form of taxes, salaries and payments to suppliers. This represented 63% of the total revenue they received from gold sales and equates to almost US$1,100 in value added locally for every ounce of gold produced.
WGC member companies employed 200,000 people directly, 95% of whom were nationals of the host countries. In addition, these companies supported an additional 1.2 million jobs through local suppliers. It is notable that wages among WGC member companies are on average six times higher than the national average. Furthermore, for every dollar spent on imports, close to five dollars were spent on local sourcing.
The Social and economic contribution of gold mining report was based on data provided by 31 World Gold Council member companies. The WGC collaborated with research partner, Steward Redqueen, who used an econometric Input-Output model, which quantifies financial flows between economic sectors, to calculate the industry’s indirect impact and overall value added. The analysis combined financial data from WGC members with macro-economic and employment statistics from publicly available country datasets.
Key highlights of the report include:
• In 2020, WGC member companies directly paid US$8.7bn in employee wages and US$7.6bn in tax payments to governments in 38 countries where they operate.
• On top of this, direct payments of US$26.0bn were made through in-country procurement and the resulting indirect value added was estimated at US$21.6bn to local suppliers.
• In 2020, the GDP contribution of WGC member companies and their supply chains in countries heavily reliant on gold mining is comparable to the quantum of Overseas Development Assistance those countries receive.
• In 2020, WGC member companies directly employ close to 200,000 people and support a further 1.2 million jobs through their local suppliers. These 1.4 million jobs induce another 700,000 jobs in local economies. In other words, every job in the gold mining industry supports six more, or close to ten more if induced jobs are included.
• A strong focus from WGC member companies on local hiring in recent years has led to demonstrable results, with local employees making up 95% of the workforce, halving the percentage of expats in the workforce (from 10% to 5%) over the past 7 years.
• Gold mining employees are well paid. Wages among WGC member companies are on average six times higher than the national average.
• The industry continues to evolve and improve its ESG performance, as reflected in the adoption of the Responsible Gold Mining Principles by all WGC member companies and several other leading gold miners.
• In 2020, WGC member companies contributed $438 million to communities and Indigenous groups.
Sandeep Biswas, CEO Newcrest Mining and Chair of the World Gold Council ESG Taskforce said: “Gold producers are working in partnership with communities, governments and civil society in countries where we operate to share the value created by responsible mining. This report outlines the enormous social and economic contribution our industry is making in countries across the world.
Responsible gold mining companies boost local economies by creating well paid local jobs, making significant tax payments and creating valuable long-life infrastructure. Investments made by the gold sector will continue to deliver long-term benefits to local communities, extending to well after mine life ends.”
Terry Heymann, Chief Financial Officer at the World Gold Council, said: “The World Gold Council and our members have long believed that when responsibly undertaken, gold mining can contribute significantly to social and economic development for host communities and countries.
This report clearly sets out the important role responsible gold miners play in supporting local and national economies. We believe that this comprehensive data set can help provide further transparency into the contribution made by the responsible gold mining sector. The report also provides further evidence of the important contribution made by this industry in advancing the UN Sustainable Development Goals.”

Nagpur: Overactive Bladder (OAB) is a condition that’s inconvenient, embarrassing and is potentially debilitating. The good news is that it’s a condition that can be managed. Although this condition can be treated, most patients do not seek treatment or consult doctors. According to Dr. Ved Mahajan,Consultant Urologist & Andrologist,Nirmal Nursing Home And Urology Center Nagpur ,OAB is characterized as a syndrome that causes an abrupt and unstoppable need to urinate. If left untreated, OAB can negatively impact life by interfering in daily activities such as work, social activities, exercise, and sleep. The incidence of OAB symptoms increases with age. Older patients are less likely to discuss their OAB symptoms with their physician and are more likely to be untreated or under-treated.
Both men and women can get OAB. It is an under-reported problem in our country. Therefore, exact number or % of cases is not known. However, in terms of %, some studies mention that around 14% men suffer from OAB whereas around 12 % women have some type of urinary incontinence issue.
Dr. Ved Mahajan,Consultant Urologist & Andrologist,Nirmal Nursing Home And Urology Center Nagpur further added that,Older women who have gone through menopause and men who have had prostate problems are more likely to get OAB. People with diseases that affect the brain or spinal cord (nervous system), such as stroke and multiple sclerosis also get OAB. Growing older is a factor, but not all people get OAB as they age. Therefore, it shouldn’t be considered as a normal part of aging.
Though initially mild, symptoms worsen with time and become especially bothersome in the form of severe nocturia (which badly disturbs sleep and physical and mental functioning) inability to postpone or defer the urge to urinate and leakage of urine before reaching the toilet.
Management of OAB involves an escalatory or “stepping up the ladder” approach. The basic and vital step revolves around self-management by behavioural and lifestyle changes. The next levels are: “pills” or oral medicines, progressing further to injections into the bladder wall, electrical stimulation of bladder-related nerves and finally, but very rarely, surgery.”
To manage OAB, first step is to make “lifestyle changes”. Sometimes these changes are called “behavioural therapy”. People can see big improvements by changing their lifestyle and daily routine. Avoiding bladder irritants such as coffee, tea, carbonated beverages and spicy food will also yield a significant symptom control. Weak pelvic floor muscles may contribute to overactive bladder. Pelvic floor muscle exercise or Kegel exercise help reduce OAB symptoms by improving this muscular control on being able to hold back urine but can take a few weeks to show results. However, this needs consistency.
As a further step, doctor might decide that oral medications are necessary to help manage the symptoms. Typically, these medications work by calming the overactivity of the muscle in the bladder wall, thereby reducing both frequency of and unwanted urges to urination. Often oral medications work better when combined with behavioural therapy.
If lifestyle changes and medicine aren’t working, there are other treatment options like injections in the bladder or nerve stimulation techniques. In OAB, the nerve signals between bladder and brain, through the spinal cord, do not communicate correctly. Electrical pulses via nerve stimulation help set right these nerve signals to the bladder, so that it can function optimally and improve OAB symptoms. Only in very rare and serious cases is surgery to be used.
Early diagnosis and prompt treatment are proven means of reducing severity of both symptoms and complications of OAB. So, don’t delay getting help for your condition or discussing your concern with a family member if you suspect he or she may be struggling with OAB symptoms.
There are huge number of people suffering from chronic illness and organ failures. Almost one person dies each hour due to unavailability of various healthy organs they need ”, said Dr. Suryashree Pandey, Sr. Consultant- Nephrology,Wockhardt Hospital,Nagpur. “Any person aged 18 or above can sign up to be an organ donor. This will save a valuable life”, she added.
26th Nov 2021 – When it comes to snacking to help you push through the morning slog, what you choose to eat can make or break your morning and impact how you eat the rest of the day. A new study , funded by the Almond Board of California, showed that a morning snack of almonds (compared to a common high-carbohydrate option) helped keep blood sugar levels more stable and trimmed the number of calories eaten over the course of the day.
In this study of 100 New Zealand adults aged 18 – 65 years, participants ate either at least 42.5g (1.5 ounces) of unroasted almonds or a calorie-matched sweet biscuit snack (the most popular usual snack according to a survey). Both snacks accounted for 10% of total calorie intake, so in some cases, the amount of snack consumed was higher.
This study had a randomized crossover design, meaning that each participant completed the study eating the almond snack and then repeated the study eating the biscuit snack on a separate day, or vice versa, with a washout period between each treatment. On the test day, participants ate a standardized breakfast. Two hours later, they ate their assigned snack food. Blood glucose and appetite ratings were measured at baseline and at 15 or 30-minute intervals after they finished eating. Two hours after the snack, lunch was offered to participants, who ate as much or as little as desired and consumption was recorded. Participants then recorded their food intake for the remainder of the day.
Results showed that the blood sugar response was lower among participants after the almond snack versus the biscuit snack. Appetite ratings did not differ between groups except for the appetite score at 90 minutes, which was lower for the biscuits compared to the almonds (which was unexpected since the almond snack resulted in a more stable blood sugar response.)
There were no differences in the amount of calories eaten at lunch after the almond or biscuit snacks. However, based on the participants’ food intake records, those who ate the almond snack reported eating ~150 calories less (on average) over the course of the day. If sustained, this calorie deficit could theoretically result in approximately half a kilo (about a pound) of weight loss per month.
This single-day analysis is part of a year-long study examining the long-term implications on weight management. Observations from this acute study are consistent with results from a previous study published in the European Journal of Nutrition. Researchers found that a mid-morning snack of almonds (42g or 1.5 ounces), compared to no snack, helped control appetite and resulted in fewer calories eaten at lunch and dinner. Results of this previous study suggest that rather than skipping out on a snack, eating almonds as a mid-morning snack may help curb hunger.
“Our results showed how eating almonds as a snack in the morning resulted in participants spontaneously consuming fewer calories over the course of the day,” said Dr. Rachel Brown, Lead Researcher and Professor at the Department of Human Nutrition, University of Otago. “Also, our study showed that almonds tempered the post-snack blood sugar response. This is important because consistenty high blood sugar levels after eating a snack or a meal may be associated with increased risk for heart disease and for death from all causes, whether a person has type 2 diabetes or not.”
Commenting on this study Regional Head – Dietetics, Max Healthcare – Delhi, Ritika Samaddar said, “Indians on average eat carbohydrate-rich diet, which is said to be one of the reasons for the prevalence of type-2 diabetes in the country. Snacking on sweet biscuits or fried food items, which contain empty calories, is very common among the general populace. The findings of the study show that replacing these food items with healthier options like almonds can help in controlling the spike in post-meal blood sugar levels, resulting in healthier lives.”
Sheela Krishnaswamy, Nutrition and Wellness Consultant remarked, “Type-2 diabetes is currently one of the major health concerns in India. One of the primary causes for this is the increase in consumption of unhealthy calorie-rich snacks like biscuits. Substituting these snacks with almonds may help in keeping blood sugar levels in check – as seen in this study group of healthy adults. Almonds are packed with nutrition such as fiber, protein, monosaturated fats making it a healthy addition to the diet.”
Integrative Nutritionist and Health Coach Neha Ranglani added, “Almonds have long been known as an excellent snacking option – they contain a lot of nutrients and research suggests they may help in controlling the calorie content of one’s diet. These study results indicate that starting the day with a handful of almonds vs. a snack high in simple carbohydrates can help blunt the post-meal insulin spike and may help limit the number of calories consumed in a day. This study provides further evidence that almonds can have a positive influence on blood sugar levels. Though the participants in this study were healthy adults without diabetes, the body of research indicates that almonds are an excellent option for people with type-2 diabetes.”
Almonds provide fiber 3.5 g per 100g and 15 essential nutrients including (per 100g / 30g serving): magnesium (270 / 81 mg), potassium (733 / 220 mg), and vitamin E (25.6 / 7.7 mg), making them a perfect nutrient-rich snack. One serving of almonds (28g) has 13g of good unsaturated fat and only 1g of saturated fat.

New Delhi: Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, bent on expanding her party’s presence, was candid about refreshing her pan-India political network on Wednesday. Her journeys, she said, will take her to Varanasi — PM Modi’s Lok Sabha constitution — and the big opposition hub of Mumbai.
The big hint was on the space the Congress might occupy in her plans. Asked about her meeting with Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, Ms Banerjee said there was none, since “they are busy with Punjab polls”. Later, she added, “Why should we meet Sonia every time? It is not constitutionally mandated”.
Her comment came amid a major expansion spree of her party – most of it at the cost of the Congress.
Over the last weeks, a number of leaders have changed camp — among them Luizinho Faleiro in Goa, late president Pranab Mukherjee’s son Abhijit Mukherjee, Sushmita Dev, the former Congress MP from Silchar and daughter of late Congress stalwart Santosh Mohan Dev.
Mamata Banerjee was known to share a good equation with Sonia Gandhi, but it has not extended to the next generation. The antipathy of Congress leaders from Bengal towards Ms Banerjee has driven a further wedge between the two parties.
The Trinamool chief, whose victory in the April-May assembly elections in Bengal had set off a buzz about her spearheading the opposition challenge to the BJP in the 2024 general elections — said she was willing to cooperate in the coming Uttar Pradesh elections.
“If Trinamool can help defeat the BJP in UP, we will go… If Akhilesh (Samajwadi chief Akhilesh Yadav) wants our help we will give,” she said. But there was a rider: “We have started in Goa and Haryana… but I think some places, let regional parties fight. If they want us to campaign, we will help”.
The Trinamool chief also said she would visit Mumbai on December 1 “for some business summit” where she will meet Chief Minister Udhav Thackeray and Sharad Pawar.
Ms Banerjee, whose party finished a row of inductions from other parties yesterday, also said she planned to go to Varanasi, since “Kamalapati Tripathi’s family is now with us”.
Rajeshpati Tripathi and Laliteshpati Tripathi — the grandson and the great-grandson of former UP Chief Minister Kamalapati Tripathi – had joined Trinamool in October. Rajeshpati Tripathi is a former MLC while Laliteshpati Tripathi is former UP Congress vice-president and an ex-MLA.
Yesterday, Ms Banerjee’s party made three key acquisitions – that gave her a toehold in at least two states – Haryana and Punjab. Besides Team India batsman Kirti Azad, former Rahul Gandhi aide Ashok Tanwar, and Rajya Sabha MP Pawan Verma for Janata Dal United, who fell out with his boss Nitish Kumar.
All of it is expected to push her a few steps further towards the national stage.

November skies are always beautiful; the hues make for a scenic environmental change that our eyes fall in love with instantly. Despite all the good things, this is also the month where many cough and cold symptoms are common due to the weather transition. The monsoon is over, and winter has begun, and this means our body needs extra care, making it important to manage our respiratory health and wellness the right way.
Health-conscious mum, Soha Ali Khan, has always actively shared her regime with us through social media. With a royal Pataudi family lineage, Soha has always believed in traditional home remedies using the benefits of traditional ingredients and practicing yoga. While Soha is seen to enjoying the beautiful sunsets with little Innaya and her quality reading time with some hot coffee during this month, she also understands that keeping her respiratory health in check is of utmost importance, especially since cough and cold symptoms are seen quite often during this time.
Sharing more about her health regime, Soha says “November is a tricky month when one can’t predict the changing weather. While I enjoy the beautiful sunsets, I’m constantly concerned about my family’s health. But one thing that puts my worries to rest is our family’s favorite, Vicks VapoRub. Vicks has been a huge part of our lives for generations, helping us get relief from common cold symptoms that our body catches while adjusting to the unpredictable climate. We are extra cautious during this season and frequently practice steam inhalation with Vicks VapoRub. This has made us appreciate the monsoon to winter transition even more.”
“I am prone to catching a cold at this time of year because my body needs time to adjust to sudden changes in the weather, but it is the time when we have many special days at home that I want to enjoy myself and quality family time as well. To avoid falling sick, I’ve picked a leaf from my mother’s book. I’ve been following a couple of age-old home remedies, which include steam inhalation with Vicks VapoRub as it has natural ingredients, like eucalyptus, camphor, and menthol, and gives relief from symptoms of cough & cold. I add a teaspoon of it to a bowl of hot (not boiling) water, cover my head with a towel, and inhale the vapors. The medicated vapors help in getting fast relief from cough and blocked nose. It is my secret to stay in bed less and enjoy the last shower and the coming winter more with my lovely family. I also ensure I eat right and exercise regularly to keep my body healthy,” added Soha.
Steam inhalation with Vicks VapoRub is safe to use for adults and kids aged six years and above. However, it is important to consult your doctor if symptoms persist. Disclaimer: Always read the label. If symptoms persist, visit the doctor. For pain-related symptoms, apply to affected areas.
Covaxin, one of the main vaccines used in India’s coronavirus immunization drive, provides only 50% protection against symptomatic COVID-19, according to a real-world study that suggests the shot is less effective than initially thought.
As India was slammed by its second major Covid wave earlier this year, researchers at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Delhi analyzed data from 2,714 of the hospital’s health workers who were showing signs of infection and underwent RT-PCR testing between April 15 and May 15, according to a study published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases journal. At the start of the country’s vaccination campaign in January, staff at AIIMS had exclusively been offered Covaxin, a shot co-developed by India’s state-funded health research agency and local company Bharat Biotech International Ltd.
The authors found that two weeks or more after completing a two-dose regime the vaccine’s adjusted effectiveness against symptomatic Covid was lower than the 77.8% that interim results established during final stage tests, a study of which was published in The Lancet earlier this month. High infection rates and virus exposure among the hospital’s employees may have contributed to Covaxin’s weaker real-world efficacy, along with the possibility that the then recently emerged delta variant blunted the shot’s protection, the researchers said.
“Our study offers a more complete picture of how BBV152 performs in the field and should be considered in the context of Covid-19 surge conditions in India, combined with the possible immune evasive potential of the delta variant,” Manish Soneja, an additional professor of medicine at AIIMS in New Delhi, said in a statement referring to the vaccine’s scientific name.
While various studies indicate almost all Covid vaccines show reduced effectiveness against the highly infectious delta variant, which began its rampant spread across India in early 2021, the new research on Covaxin may dent the inoculation’s appeal at a time when Bharat Biotech is scaling up manufacturing and as India restarts overseas vaccine shipments.
So far more than 130 million doses of Covaxin have been administered in India. Bharat Biotech and the government, which has widely promoted the shot, have sought to close the door on controversies involving the vaccine’s early authorization in January before it had completed phase 3 human trials, prompting widespread hesitancy in the country at the time.
The World Health Organization’s independent technical panel also took months before granting emergency approval to Covaxin in early November, repeatedly asking Bharat Biotech for further data. Krishna Ella, chairman of the Hyderabad-based vaccine maker, said the WHO green light took as long as it did because of criticism surrounding the shot, which was developed using traditional inactivated-virus technology.
The researchers said the AIIMs study didn’t estimate the vaccine’s effectiveness against hospitalization, severe disease and death, while acknowledging that it wasn’t designed to estimate protection over different time intervals. Patients weren’t tested to find if they were symptomatic due to a specific variant and the authors also pointed to the lack of data on comorbidities and prior infections.

The India vs New Zealand two-match Test series starts from Thursday with the first match scheduled to take place in Kanpur. India will be without some big names, including skipper Virat Kohli — at least for the opening Test. In Kohli’s absence, Ajinkya Rahane will lead Team India in the first Test but the right-hander has been woeful form in recent times and had a nightmare outing in the Test series in England earlier this year. Former India batter Gautam Gambhir feels Rahane should consider himself “fortunate” to still be in the Indian Test side.
Ahead of the first Test, Gambhir speaking on Star Sports show ‘Game Plan’, said that he will like to see Shubman Gill come in at the No.4 position with Mayank Agarwal opening the innings along with KL Rahul.
“I am going to open with Mayank Agarwal and KL Rahul because he had opened in England. And then probably Shubman Gill will bat at No.4. That is what I would want to see. Rahane is pretty fortunate that he is still part of this side because he is probably still leading. The kind of England series he has had. But he has another opportunity now and hopefully he can make that count,” Gambhir said.
While not as damning as Gambhir, former India pacer Irfan Pathan too felt that the selectors and the team management will need to keep an eye on Rahane’s performances against New Zealand, especially with a tour of South Africa coming up after that.
“You need to keep an eye on Ajinkya Rahane’s performances. He has been having a terrible time, especially in the last one year. So, you need to keep in mind that who will be the guy batting in the middle overs, not only against New Zealand, but also in South Africa. So, if you think Shubman Gill is your man, then make him bat at No.4 and continue with that,” said Irfan Pathan.
Rahane had a torrid time in England, scoring a paltry 109 runs from seven innings. He averaged just 15.57 in the series with a high score of 61. Rahane was outscored by the likes of Ravindra Jadeja and Shardul Thakur with even Bumrah averaging more than the middle-order batter.
Rahane will hope to hit the ground running in the first Test, and with Kohli returning to lead the team in the second Test, there could be some serious questions regarding his place in the playing XI, if he fails in the opening Test.

Modern-day women are working around the clock, managing their professional and personal lives and taking up new challenges every day. Moreover, based on a recent skincare study it was found that our skin can age up to 8 years in a single day if we do not provide the nourishment it needs. To tackle these rising skincare issues, OLAY India has launched the al new Collagen Peptide 24 making it the gold standard of plump and bouncy skin that keeps it going all day.
Made using a blend of new-age technology, OLAY Regenerist Collagen Peptide 24 stimulates collagen production as it works like a naturally occurring collagen and boosts better skin penetration using Bio-available Technology with much shorter chains of amino acids than collagen. Specifically formulated with tried-and-true ingredients, this new moisturizer will transform the look of your skin as it has:
• Collagen Peptide (Pal-KTTKS) that helps the skin look firmer
• Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) that helps the skin retain moisture and plumpness to better resist the daily stresses that would rob our skin of its glow while helping with surface cell regeneration for a healthy and hydrated result
• Glycerin that helps the skin attract and retain moisture so it can stay firm and hydrated all day long
Talking about the latest launch of OLAY Regenerist Collagen Peptide 24, Rohini Venkateswaran, Vice President- Skin & Personal Care, India said, “We at Olay India have always strived to work towards the right blend of technology and skincare elements that cater to the modern-day women in their evolved lifestyle choices. Mumbai, 19 November 2021: The introduction of the SLAVIA marks the start of ŠKODA AUTO’s next stage in the INDIA 2.0 project. Following the successful launch of the midsize SUV KUSHAQ, the brand-new sedan is the Czech carmaker’s second India-specific model. The SLAVIA’s manufacturing process has a localization level of up to 95%. As the sedan is based on the MQB-A0-IN platform – an MQB variant specially adapted by ŠKODA AUTO for India – it offers a comprehensive range of safety features and advanced infotainment systems. The power output of the TSI engines available for the SLAVIA is 85 kW (115 PS)* and 110 kW (150 PS)* respectively, and just like other ŠKODAs, this model is characterized by an emotive design. Its name is both a tribute to the carmaker’s beginnings and a symbol of a new era in the Indian market.
Thomas Schäfer, CEO ŠKODA AUTO, said, “With the new SLAVIA, we are igniting the next stage of our INDIA 2.0 product campaign. Following the successful launch of the KUSHAQ, we are now entering another popular segment with our brand-new premium midsize sedan. The SLAVIA is perfectly tailored to the needs of our customers in India and is built with up to 95% localization. We are confident that both the KUSHAQ and the SLAVIA will allow us to leverage the full potential in this promising, growing market.”
Gurpratap Boparai, Managing Director of ŠKODA AUTO Volkswagen India Private Limited, said, “The successful start of the INDIA 2.0 project with the KUSHAQ truly highlights what can be achieved with global collaboration here in India. In addition to the increasingly sought-after SUVs, the premium sedan segment offers tremendous potential, and it’s a territory that we have made our own. The sophisticated SLAVIA stands for prestige and style. It also represents a new growth area for ŠKODA AUTO. With its sophistication, capable engines, and numerous Simply Clever features, the SLAVIA will appeal to discerning customers in India, and it will also be appreciated in markets around the world. We are confident that the ŠKODA SLAVIA will continue the benchmarks set by the OCTAVIA and SUPERB and will help us to further strengthen our dominance in the segment.”
Zac Hollis, Brand Director, ŠKODA AUTO India, said,
“With the launch of KUSHAQ, we have witnessed unprecedented growth for ŠKODA Auto India. While KUSHAQ saw us conquer new territory with a mid-size SUV that represents the aspirations of modern India, SLAVIA, gets us back to our roots, as the brand that brought the original premium sedan to India. Despite the headwinds faced by the industry, we have continued with our product campaigns, expanded our network reach to more than 100 cities, augmented the brand awareness, delivered on our promise of customer-centricity, professionalized the dealer network, introduced value-added services, and set new benchmarks in the after-sales business. SLAVIA is gorgeous inside out, and will be our second volume driver along with KUSHAQ, as we continue to substantially grow our volumes in India.”
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will scrap three controversial farm laws that led to angry street protests over the last year, his biggest policy reversal since assuming power in 2014.
In a televised address to the nation on Friday, PM Modi apologized for failing to convince a section of farmers and said the parliament will repeal the legislation by end of the month.
“The purpose of the new laws was to strengthen the country’s farmers, especially small farmers,” he said. “We have failed to convince some farmers despite all our efforts.”
The announcement comes ahead of key provincial polls in the state of Uttar Pradesh and Punjab where farmers are an influential voting bloc. The long-drawn protests by hundreds of thousands of farmers could have hurt his Bharatiya Janata Party’s chances in both elections. The government had, so far, refused to budge from its position which the protesters claimed would ruin their livelihoods, making it the longest stand-off since PM Modi swept to power seven years ago.
While PM Modi has backtracked on policy moves by his government earlier, including on land laws, that move hadn’t resulted in long drawn public protests.
“It’s a very un-Modi-like act to take back a decision. And it is obviously because of the elections,” said Nilanjan Mukhopadhyay, a New Delhi-based political analyst and PM Modi biographer. “This is about Uttar Pradesh and Punjab elections and the fact that a decision that brought farmers to the streets kept them there for an entire year.”
The majority of the protesters come from Punjab and Uttar Pradesh states heading to the polls in the first half of 2022 though dates have not been announced yet.
The government had insisted the new policy would benefit the growers and refused to withdraw the legislation. The Supreme Court too had ordered the temporary suspension of the laws, but the protesting farmers had refused to compromise.
Election Pressure
Farmers represent a potentially huge vote bloc: Some 60% of India’s nearly 1.4 billion people depend on agriculture in one way or another. Both Uttar Pradesh and Punjab have large farming communities. The announcement came on the day India is marking a holiday to celebrate the birth anniversary of the founder of Sikhism. The Sikh community is a significant vote base in Punjab.
The main contention about the agricultural reforms was the shift to a free market regime for the sale of farm goods — a move that farmers saw as a means to end a state price support system for crops and which they feared would leave them at the mercy of big corporations that would control the market.
Also, central to PM Modi’s reforms was an amendment to the Essential Commodities Act, a 1955 law, that sought to cap prices during times of higher demand — which discouraged investment to increase production.
Farm leaders have reacted cautiously to the news, with Rakesh Tikait, a senior leader from Uttar Pradesh tweeting to say his supporters will wait to roll back the agitation until the day the laws are actually repealed.
“Just because the prime minister announced a repeal doesn’t mean that we will pick up our tents and walk away from the protests,” Mr Tikait said. “750 farmers have lost their lives in this agitation. We need to discuss all the issues.” The protesting farm unions will meet and decide their next move, he added.
Rahul Gandhi, a leader of the opposition Congress party said that those “who feed the nation have peacefully defeated arrogance.” He also linked to an earlier comment where he had said, “Mark my words, the govt will have to take back the anti-farm laws.”
The latest move by PM Modi “will require some new calculations by the farmers’ movement and opposition parties,” said Yamini Aiyar, president and chief executive of the New Delhi-based Centre for Policy Research. “Although it’s difficult to say how much this will help the BJP in the upcoming elections, it does send exactly the wrong message to all political parties: That power political lobbies are best left untouched.”

Paytm’s success has turned Vijay Shekhar Sharma, a school teacher’s son, into a billionaire with a net worth of $2.4 billion
New Delhi: Paytm founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma turned emotional during his address at the Bombay Stock Exchange, or BSE, on the company’s market debut this morning, after it completed India’s biggest-ever initial public offering or IPO.
In visuals, Mr. Sharma was seen wiping tears with a handkerchief as he addressed a gathering in a hall of the BSE.
Mr. Sharma, an engineering graduate, founded Paytm in 2010 as a platform for mobile recharges.
Paytm grew quickly after ride-hailing firm Uber listed it as a quick payment option and its use swelled further in November 2016, when the government’s overnight ban on high-value currency notes boosted digital payments.
Paytm’s success has turned Mr. Sharma, a school teacher’s son, into a billionaire with a net worth of $2.4 billion, according to Forbes. Its IPO has also minted hundreds of new millionaires in the country.
Shares in Paytm fell 21 percent in their market debut, valuing the Ant Group-backed digital payments firm at around ₹ 1.11 trillion. Shares were changing hands at ₹ 1,705 in early morning trade versus the offer price of ₹ 2,150.
Paytm, which also counts SoftBank among its backers, raised $2.5 billion in its IPO, of which $1.1 billion was from institutional investors.

Nagpur 13th November 2021: Over the years, Zee TV has introduced audiences to some truly inspiring accounts of India’s most striking leaders and royal figures who have had a significant impact on India’s historical and cultural heritage. After an overwhelming response to the journeys of Jodha Akbar and Jhansi ki Rani, Zee TV is all set to introduce viewers to the biggest historical magnum opus of 2021, presenting the untold story of one of the most iconic women of the Maratha empire – Kashibai, the wife of Peshwa Bajirao Ballal. Produced by SOBO Films, the show is set to premiere on 15th November 2021 and will air every Monday to Friday at 8 PM, only on Zee TV.
Set in the 18th century after the end of the Mughal era, the show depicts the journey of a young, coddled girl who went on to become an astute and authoritative Peshwin bai – an administrator par excellence who held the fort while Bajirao was out expanding the Maratha kingdom. In other words, Itihaas Ke Maathe Par Saubhagya Ka Teeka. The show features the adorable 9-year-old Aarohi Patel as the young Kashibai, a face so endearing that she lit up the screen and stole the makers’ hearts with her very first look test. On the other hand, essaying the childhood of the spirited Maratha warrior is a striking young boy who made a distinct mark for himself on Zee TV’s DID L’il Masters – Venkatesh Pande. Capturing the myriad hues of Kashibai and Bajirao’s life, the show will see how destiny brings the two leaders together at an early age, their unique dynamics and how their union shapes the contours of the Maratha empire.
Another important character in the show is that of Radhabai (Bajirao’s mother) played by talented Marathi actress Aishwarya Narkar. Radhabai was a strict disciplinarian, a loving mother, and a caring wife who wanted what’s best for her family. To promote Kashibai Bajirao Ballal before its launch, ‘Radhabai’ Aishwarya Narkar and ‘Kashibai’ Aarohi Patel visited Nagpur and not only spoke about their show but also became a part of creating a life-size Rangoli portrait of Kashibai and Bajirao. Aishwarya and Aarohi loved the vibrant artwork and were seeing making rangoli along with the artists themselves. They also invited everyone to watch the show from 15th November 2021, Monday to Friday at 8 pm.
Talking about her visit to Nagpur city, Aarohi said,“This is the first time I have come to Nagpur, and I am really liking this place. I also tried the Tarri Pohe and Misal Pav. I told them about my upcoming show, and they were all very nice to me. We also went to Eternity Mall where a life-size rangoli was being made with my face. I even got a chance to put rangoli and I really loved it.”
Aishwarya Narkar as Radhabai on her visit to Nagpur city said,“I have visited Nagpur a couple of times earlier, and I am quite pleased to be here once again to promote Kashibai Bajirao Ballal. I enjoy every time I come to Nagpur as the people are so welcoming. I had a wonderful time interacting with the media, feasting on Pitla Bhakar and tanzanite Misal, and watching the beautiful rangoli of Kashibai come to life at the Eternity Mall. I hope the fans and viewers keep showering the same amount of love that we saw in the city.”
While our Radhabai and Kashibai return to their fortress, get ready to witness the untold story of an ordinary girl who went on to take over the responsibilities of her whole empire.

Delhi News Live Updates: In its hearing of the Delhi pollution crisis, the Supreme Court on Monday asked the Centre and concerning states to make decisions on which industries, vehicles, and power plants can be stopped for the time being to curtail Delhi’s air pollution. It also asked for the reconsideration of the work from home policy.
The Centre told the Supreme Court that stubble burning is not the major cause of pollution in Delhi as it contributes to only 10 percent of the capital’s dirty air. This comes as the Delhi government told the apex court that it is ready to take steps such as “complete lockdown to control local emissions” contributing to the national Capital’s spell of heavily polluted air. The apex court also has blamed the Delhi government for solely focusing on stubble-burning as the cause of pollution in its affidavit.
To deal with the pollution crisis in the capital, the Delhi Traffic Police said it will prosecute all vehicles plying without pollution under control (PUC) certificates. For this, over 550 personnel have been deployed at more than 170 locations such as petrol pumps, pickets, highways. The South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) has also kicked in its winter action plan to tackle dust pollution under its jurisdiction.
In the last 24 hours, Delhi’s air quality improved marginally from the ‘severe’ to the ‘very poor category, with the AQI being recorded at 338. The air quality index of neighboring areas of Faridabad, Ghaziabad, Gurgaon, and Noida was recorded at 312, 368, 301, and 357, respectively.
