Raymond sets up Rs 250 crore manufacturing plant, fabric unit comes up in Nandgaon Peth

The Maharashtra government has decided to earmark 3,000 hectares of land for promotion of textile hubs in Amravati district, accommodating 200 units with a potential to generate 30,000 jobs. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced this Sunday. At Nandgaon Peth in Amravati district, Fadnavis commissioned the first greenfield linen yarn and fabric manufacturing facility of Raymond Limited, which made its unit operational within 15 months.

The CM said, “The government is committed to promoting agro industries in the cotton belt of Vidarbha to provide higher remuneration to the farmers. The textile policy ensured the textile hub would be accorded higher priority in areas of Vidarbha which has highest cotton cultivation.” Working on the farm-to-fabric-to-fashion-to-foreign theme, said the CM, the policy reforms undertaken in textile sectors were irreversible.

“Amravati, with all infrastructure facilities, is all set to become the leading textile hub of India. As many as 30 mega units and 90 small and medium scale units have taken the initiative in the textile sector. In all, 200 units in the next five years are set to deliver the change,” he said. Giving details about the government’s plans in the textile sector, Fadnavis said, “The integrated textile hub would see a private-public partnership complete with emphasis on cotton cultivators growth and development. The Amravati University will have a skill development centre to impart training to meet the challenges in the textile sector, which is the second largest employment generating sector.”

He said Amravati was also being developed as India’s biggest readymade garment hub. During the Make in India Week in 2016, Raymond had signed an MoU in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, pledging Rs 1,400-crore investments in the textile sector. The first phase at Nandgaon Peth on 30 acres of land has provided employment to 800 people. The company intends to develop the project in four phases on 500 acres of land.

Chairman and managing director, Raymond Group, Gautam Singhania said, “We are committed to developing Vidarbha region. Of the seven plants in Maharashtra, two are in and around Vidarbha. The Raymond provides direct and indirect employment to 20,000 people across Maharashtra.” The project site in Nandgaon Peth has a number of fresh passouts of industrial training institutes handling different machines. Vaishnav Mangle (18), who studied at ITI-Khamgaon, draws a stipend of Rs 6,200. Shivram Bambos, another ITI student who is from Nagpur, draws a stipend of Rs 5,700.

S K Gupta, president, Corporate, Raymond Ltd said, “The employment to local ITI youths was accorded priority. They are trained on the job.” However, the greenfield linen facility based on flax crop has a limited use of the cotton grown in Vidarbha. It imports the flax from France, Belgium and Netherland.

“The Yavatmal plant uses 98 per cent of the Vidarbha cotton. The high-end linen requires flax, which is not grown in India, so has to procured from abroad,” said an official. The second phase of Nandgaon Peth plant would use the cotton procured from Vidarbha, said officials. Fadnavis said, “I have already taken the commitment from Raymond for a cotton-driven project in the second phase, which would help local farmers.”

UIDAI suspends Airtel, Airtel Payments Bank’s e-KYC licence

UIDAI suspends Airtel, Airtel Payments Bank's e-KYC licence

UIDAI suspends Airtel, In its strongest action yet,  temporarily UIDAI suspends Airtel and Airtel Payments Bank from conducting Aadhaar-based SIM verification of mobile customers using eKYC process as well as e-KYC of payments bank clients.

The action follows allegations of Bharti Airtel using the Aadhaar-eKYC based SIM verification process to open payments bank accounts of its subscribers without their ‘informed consent’. UIDAI also took strong objection to allegations that such payments bank accounts are being linked to receive LPG subsidy.

UIDAI, in an interim order, “suspended e-KYC licence key of Bharti Airtel Ltd and Airtel Payment Bank Ltd with immediate effect,” sources with direct knowledge of the development said. This essentially means Airtel would not be able to, in the interim, carry out ‘electronic-verification’ or link mobile SIMs of its customers with their 12-digit biometric national ID Aadhaar though the efficient and paperless eKYC (or electronic Know Your Customer) process of UIDAI.

Also, Airtel Payments Bank will not be able to open a new account with Aadhaar e-KYC. However, accounts can be opened through alternate methods, if available.

When contacted, an Airtel spokesperson said: “We can confirm that we have received interim order from the UIDAI regarding temporary suspension of Aadhaar linked e-KYC services till their satisfaction on certain processes relating to Airtel payment banks onboarding of customers.” “We are engaging with the authority and are hopeful of an early resolution. We are also undertaking to complete the said actions on priority and have commenced thorough checks of our process flows.

“Being compliant to all guidelines is paramount to us. In the interim, any inconvenience to our customers is regretted,” the spokesperson said.More than 23 lakh customers have reportedly received as many as Rs 47 crore in their Airtel bank accounts, which they did not know had been opened.

Sources said it was brought to the notice of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) that at the time of mobile verification using Aadhaar e-KYC, the Airtel retailers were also opening Airtel Payments Bank accounts, without informed consent of the user.

Government LPG subsidy was also getting transferred to these accounts, without their consent.UIDAI observed that as per agreement with the authority, Airtel and Airtel Bank are duty bound and under obligation to ensure security and privacy of residents’ identity information.

Security and privacy of Aadhaar data is a highly sensitive matter and the Supreme Court is looking into its various aspects.Suspending the ‘e-KYC licence key’, UIDAI ordered PricewaterhouseCoopers to conduct an audit of Bharti Airtel and Airtel Payments Bank to ascertain if their systems and processes are in compliance with the Aadhaar Act.

UIDAI may consider revocation of suspension or decide further necessary action upon receipt of the report. The alleged actions of Airtel and Airtel Payments Bank were found to be in violation of different sections of the Aadhaar Act, 2016, which mandates obtaining explicit consent of the individual. Violations are liable to be punished with Rs 1 lakh per day fine and termination of authentication user agreements.

Both Bharti Airtel and Airtel Payments Bank were appointed as Authentication User Agencies (AUA) by UIDAI and had entered into an agreement with UIDAI in February 2015 and September 2016 respectively for the purposes of availing authentication services provided by the authority.

Sources said in response to the first notice of September 18, Airtel and Airtel Bank stated that they have amended their process and the opening of a bank account is completely de- linked from the process of re-verification of mobile connection.

These replies were found to be unsatisfactory by UIDAI, which issued another notice on November 24. The company responded by saying no bank account was opened without the consent of the customers and additional safeguards have been introduced.

The replies too were found to be unsatisfactory as UIDAI continued to receive numerous complaints of unauthorised opening of Airtel Payments Bank accounts.Sources said the interim order listed out some of the complaints and went on to state that Airtel and Airtel Bank had made “false statements” to “deceive and mislead” UIDAI.

When UIDAI reviewed the Airtel mobile app, it found that when the app is opened, along with the welcome message a pre- ticked consent box is momentarily flashed on the screen which states “Upgrade or create my Airtel Payment Bank wallet using existing Airtel mobile KYC.”

This was found to reflect blatant disregard of Aadhaar Act and Regulations. “UIDAI suspends Airtel”

Sunny Leone might be responsible for mass suicide on New Year’s Eve; know why.

Sunny Leone might be responsible for mass suicide on New Year’s Eve; know why

Sunny Leone might be responsible for mass suicide on New Year's Eve; know why

According to a report by Indian Express, Reddy backed the protesters’ rationale — that Sunny Leone performing on stage would ‘hurt the culture of the state’. “I have told the police commissioner not to give permission for the Sunny Leone event. If they (the organisers) have taken permission to conduct a programme, (then) let them hold cultural activities like music, or Bharatanatyam not this (Sunny’s performance),” Express’s report quoted Reddy as saying.

On 15 December, Karnataka Rakshana Vedike Yuva Sene, a pro-Kannada group in the state, had come out in protest of Leone’s performance during the New Year eve. They burnt posters and raised slogans against the actress and questioned the actress’ past. They even went on to say that they would commit mass suicide, if her performance proceeded as planned.

One of the protesters said bringing Leone would lead to incidents akin to 2016’s Bengaluru New Year mass molestation. “We have all seen what happened at MG Road and Brigade Road on 31 December last year. Bringing people like Sunny Leone to Bengaluru will only corrupt the minds of men and women, and lead them to behave inappropriately,” said the protester, as quoted by Express.

A report by The New Indian Express quoted protesters cheering on the government’s decision to cancel the event. They said, “It is a victory for us. Government has cancelled the programme. Had it happened here, we would have brought activists from 20 districts to Bengaluru and held a mega protest here.”

Maharashtra government to create special police cells to battle crimes against women, minors in state

Maharashtra government to create special police cells to battle crimes against women, minors in state

NAGPUR: The Minister of State for Home in the Devendra Fadnavis cabinet Deepak Kesarkar on Friday announced the formation of special police squads to prevent and investigate crime against minor girls after several women members of the Legislative Council alleged that the cases of molestation, eve-teasing and other crime against minor girls had increased.

Speaking during a “short discussion” Shiv Sena MLC Neelam Gorhe said, “The cases of molestation and eve teasing of minor girls in the state have increased. There are reports of suicides by girls after eve-teasing. The victims are being threatened. The atmosphere of the police stations should be such that the victims should feel at home, however, the young girls are made to run from one police station to another which adds to their suicidal tendencies. There is a need to increase the sensitivity of our policemen. In such cases, the police can also file complaints if the victim is reluctant but that doesn’t seem to be happening. The Section 354 of the Indian Penal Code should be explained to constables to increase its effectiveness. There should be a fast track court for every rape case.”

Senior NCP leader and MLC Vidya Chavan said people were scared to raise a girl child these days (because of increase in crime against women and minor girls).

“The Home Ministry is coming up with projects (to prevent crime against minor girls) but such projects are limited to urban areas and the rural areas are being neglected. Minor girls are not even safe in ashram schools (residential schools). The police department, which should be protecting the girls and women, is also involved in atrocities on them. Women are not safe even inside the jails and are facing atrocities. Teenage girls are easy targets (for miscreants). Many of them are scared to go to schools or colleges. Please take serious cognisance of such cases,” she appealed to the government.

The BJP MLC Smita Wagh also joined the Shiv Sena and NCP woman legislatures and demanded “speedy justice” in cases of crime against minor girls and women.

Replying to their concerns, Mr. Kesarkar announced that special police units, headed by a DSP-level officer would be appointed in all 36 districts.

Apart from the DSP, the special police units would include three police officials and 12 police constables.

The Minister also announced the formation of a seven-member committee, consisting of the legislators and women IPS officers to ensure “effective implementation” of women-centric programs of the state government.

“We have also decided to set up special complaint boxes in every school and college for the girls who are scared to come to the police stations to lodge complaints,” Mr. Kesarkar informed the House.

MLA Prakash Abitkar named in loan waiver beneficiary

MLA Prakash Abitkar named in loan waiver beneficiary

Shiv Sena MLA Prakash Abitkar claimed on Friday that he had been named as a beneficiary of the farm loan waiver in Kolhapur District Central Cooperative Bank (KDCCB), just a day after Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis declared that the scheme was being implemented smoothly.

Mr. Prakash Abitkar, an MLA from Radhanagari in Kolhapur district, said in the Assembly, “I was stunned when I came to know that my name appeared in the green list of loan waiver beneficiaries. I was shocked again when I got more details about the list of my (Kolhapur) area … I had not even applied or registered my name anywhere to get the waiver,” he said.

The MLA claimed the list also included a few others — including a school teacher, a State government employee, and a retired principal — who should not be eligible for the loan waiver. “The State Information and Technology Department should be careful while releasing the money. My intention is to save the government money, as poor farmers should be beneficiaries and not people who don’t fit the criteria,” Mr. Prakash Abitkar said.

On Thursday, Mr. Fadnavis had listed individuals who cannot be beneficiaries of the waiver, including zilla parishad members, municipal corporators, MLAs and MPs.

Protem speaker Yogesh Sagar instructed the government to look into the matter.

In the evening, Cooperation Minister Subhash Deshmukh released a statement saying the confusion was a result of identical first names, and the KDCCB had assigned the same loan account number to one Prakash Sutar and Mr. Abitkar. “We have corrected the mistake. No money was transferred to the MLAs account,” the statement said.

Leader of Opposition Radhkrishna Vikhe-Patil criticised the government, saying that Opposition parties had to point out errors made by the IT department.

BJP MLA Halvankar wants expert committee to review birth date of Shree Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj

BJP MLA Halvankar wants expert committee to review birth date of Shree Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj

Nagpur: Suresh Halvankar, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA from Nagpur, created an uproar in the Assembly on Friday by demanding that a committee of historians be formed to review the birth date of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

For years, right-wing groups and the Maharashtra government have been celebrating Shiv Jayanti on separate days: the former as per the Hindu calender, and latter on February 19, a date fixed by a committee of historians.

On Friday, Mr. Halvankar raised a point of propriety saying that a dispute over the birth date of Shivaji Maharaj, an icon of Maharashtra, was uncalled for and demanded that another expert committee be set up to resolve the issue.

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MLA Jitendra Awhad said that Mr. Halvankar was purposely spreading misinformation. “The State government has already fixed the birth date of Shivaji Maharaj. The BJP MLA is purposely playing with the emotions of the people of Maharashtra by raising closed disputes,” he said.

Shouting match

MLAs from Congress and NCP objected to the statement, with Leader of Opposition Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil demanding that Mr. Halvankar’s remarks be struck from the proceedings. Speaker Haribhau Bagde, however, denied the request.

When the Opposition members started raising slogans against the government, ruling party leaders did the same in response. Shiv Sena MLA Sunil Prabhu said his party believes that Shiv Jayanti should be celebrated as per the Hindu calendar.

‘Don’t distort history’

Finally, NCP leader Ajit Pawar intervened, saying that it was the BJP-Sena government in 1995 which had formed the earlier committee to fix the birth date. “It was that committee’s report that said Shiv Jayanti should be celebrated on February 19. No one should try to distort the history [of Shivaji Maharaj], as the people of Maharashtra will not tolerate it,” he said.

The controversy over when Shiv Jayanti falls first emerged in the 1950s. The then chief minister, Yashwantrao Chavan, had appealed to right-wing groups not to create confusion over the issue. When the Shiv Sena-BJP government came to power in 1995, with Manohar Joshi as chief minister, the State formed a committee of historians and academicians to resolve the issue. Based on the report submitted by the committee to the government, the subsequent Congress-NCP government led by Vilasrao Deshmukh declared February 19 as the official birth anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

Boost for 'Make in India: Narendra Modi to commission Scorpene-class submarine INS Kalvari

MUMBAI: INS Kalvari will be commissioned into the Navy by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai. INS Kalvari is a diesel-electric attack submarine that has been built for the Indian Navy by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited.

Representing a significant success for the “Make in India” initiative, it is the first of six such submarines that will be inducted into the Indian Navy. A diesel-electric attack submarine, the INS Kalvari has been built for the Indian Navy by the Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited.

The project has been undertaken with French collaboration.

Along with Prime Minister Modi, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Navy chief Admiral Sunil Lanba, Vice Admiral Girish Luthra, important dignitaries of Maharashtra Government, and senior Naval Officers will be present for the event.

The PM will unveil its plaque at the commissioning ceremony on Thursday. He will undertake a visit of the submarine and will also address the gathering.

This will be preceded by reading out the commissioning warrant, hoisting of colours and breaking of commissioning pennant with national anthem.

Kalvari has gone through 120 days of extensive sea trials. The submarines, designed by French naval defence and energy company DCNS, are being built by Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL) in Mumbai as part of Project-75 of the Indian Navy.

“The technology utilised in the Scorpene has ensured superior stealth features such as advanced acoustic silencing techniques, low radiated noise levels, hydro-dynamically optimised shape and the ability to launch a crippling attack on the enemy using precision guided weapons,” an official of the MDL said.

Kalvari is named after the dreaded tiger shark, a deadly deep sea predator of the Indian Ocean.

The first Kalvari, commissioned on December 8, 1967, was also the first submarine of the Indian Navy. It was decommissioned on May 31, 1996 after nearly three decades of service.

Gujarat assembly election second phase: 12 % Voting in first two Hours.

Gujarat Assembly election An estimated 2.22 crore people are eligible to exercise their franchise in the elections to 93 Assembly seats spread across 14 districts; 851 candidates are in the fray

Prominent candidates in the fray for the battle include Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel, who is contesting from Mehsana against Jivabhai Patel of the Congress, and half-a-dozen top Ministers. Junior Home Minister Pradipsinh Jadeja and Health minister Shankar Chaudhary are among the leaders contesting.

In Ahmedabad city, the ruling BJP won 14 of the 16 Assembly seats in the 2012 polls, while the Congress secured two seats. In the district, the Opposition held two out of five Assembly seats.

In Maninagar, the constituency once represented by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Congress has given ticket to a foreign-educated young face Shweta Bhrambhatt against the BJP MLA Suresh Patel. Mr. Modi vacated the seat after becoming Prime Minister in 2014.

In its bid to form a caste bloc against the BJP, the Congress has won over Hardik Patel, Alpesh Thakore and Jignesh Mevani, who have emerged as the young turks representing Patidars, OBCs and Dalits, respectively, and pose a formidable challenge to the saffron party’s dominance.

Among the voters to exercise their franchise in the second phase include Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP President Amit Shah, BJP patriarch L.K. Advani and Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, all of whom will cast their vote in Ahmedabad city.

On the other hand, Mr. Gandhi, in his first media interaction after being elected as party president, told presspersons that there was “tremendous undercurrent” against the ruling BJP in Gujarat and predicted a victory for his party in the Assembly polls.

Citing quota agitations by Patidars and OBCs and Dalits as an example of rising discontent among the people, he claimed that “public mood” had undergone a radical shift with all sections of society angry with the saffron party.

A month-long campaigning for the crucial polls witnessed a major and ugly political firestorm after PM Modi alleged that Pakistan was trying to influence the Gujarat polls and even accused former PM Manmohan Singh of being a party to it.

However, the PM’s rare and unusual allegation was met with a strong rebuttal from Dr. Singh, who demanded that Mr. Modi apologise to the nation for his remarks.

Besides PM Modi and Congress president-elect Mr. Gandhi, Gujarat elections the one campaigner who stole the show was Patidar crusader Hardik Patel, who fired up the campaign by holding massive rallies across the State, particularly in Nikol area of the city, where he appealed to voters to teach BJP a “lesson” this time. The 24-year-old even held a road show although the authorities had denied permission for the event.

No mantra chanting or bells at Amarnath cave as NGT declares it ‘silent zone’

No mantra chanting or bells at Amarnath cave as NGT declares it 'silent zone'

A controversial decision by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) to ban chanting of religious hymns and slogans at the Amarnath cave shrine has evoked sharp reactions from netizens and Hindu groups alike.

The move purportedly intends to curb noise pollution in the area.

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), which was especially vocal against the directive issued to the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board, dubbed it as a “weird and direct attack by the NGT on the religious sentiments of Hindus”.

News agency ANI first posted about the development on its Twitter handle, stating: “NGT directs shrine board that there should be no chanting of ‘mantras’ or ‘jaykaras’ in Amarnath. NGT also directs that there should be single line of people walking towards the cave from the last check post.”

It later followed up with another tweet. “#NGT to Amarnath Shrine Board: There should be no ringing of bells. No mobiles or belongings to be carried beyond last check post. Shrine board must consider making a store room where people can keep their belongings.”

Advocate Leela Karan Sharma, state VHP president and face of the 2008 Amarnath land agitation, said: “This is totally wrong. It is a direct attack on our religion. We won’t tolerate this autocratic directive.”

Sharma went on to question whether chanting of religious hymns and slogans could actually cause noise pollution. “Has the NGT banned Azaan (the call to prayer raised by Muslims)? We take strong exception to this,” he said.

The directive was greeted by equally acerbic responses on Twitter. “Then stop everything… Azaan… church bells… gurdwara bhajans & Buddhist prayers… If you cannot stop them, we will continue with our practices & rituals,” a netizen posted.

Top officials, including principal secretary to governor Umang Narula (also the CEO of the Amarnath and Vaishno Devi shrine boards), could not be contacted for comment.

Over 2.6 lakh pilgrims visited the cave shrine in South Kashmir from June 29 to August 7 as part of their annual pilgrimage.

Legislative Assembly adjourned 4 times over farmers issues

Legislative Assembly adjourned 4 times over farmers' issues

Nagpur – The Maharashtra Legislative Assembly was adjourned for the third consecutive day on Wednesday following heated exchanges between members of the ruling and opposition parties.

Members from both sides marched to the well of the Council thrice and shouted slogans in front of the Chairman. Members of the ruling dispensation alleged that their counterparts in the Opposition were stalling proceedings by misusing their majority in the Council. The opposition members accused the government of running away from the debate on the loan waiver.

Dhananjay Munde, Leader of Opposition in the State Council, said, “The business of the day must be suspended and we should start debates on issues such as the loan waiver and the agricultural crisis in the State.”

Meanwhile, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Girish Bapat said that the government was ready for debate and requested members of the House to maintain order. He said, “There is a discussion scheduled on the issue. We shall go ahead with that. But the Opposition must let the House function.”

However, members of the opposition continued to shout slogans and Deputy Chairman Manikrao Thakre adjourned the House for the day. Leader of the House and Revenue Minister Chandrakant Patil said, “The opposition is trying to shut our voices on the basis of majority. We will approach the Governor.”

Peasant and Workers Party leader Jayant Patil refuted the charges. He said, “Raising farmers’ issues is not suppressing voices but empowering them. The government is insensitive to farmers’ issues.”

2nd ODI – Ro-hit’s sparkling 208 powers India to 392

2nd ODi rohit sharma

Mohali : 2nd ODI Rohit Sharma’s sparkling 208 not out ensured India ended up with a massive total of 392 for 4 versus Sri Lanka in the 2nd ODI played in Mohali, on Wednesday (December 13). This turned out to be Rohit’s third double hundred in ODI cricket (four others have one each) and he became only the second captain to crack a double ton in the 50-over format. Shikhar Dhawan (68) and Shreyas Iyer (88) also played crucial hands to help India bounce back after their poor performance in the first game.

After being surprisingly inserted into bat, India began rather sedately. The openers, Rohit and Dhawan, kept the scorecard ticking over with a diet of singles and twos. It was only in the 14th over when Dhawan opened up his shoulders by collecting three boundaries off Pradeep’s bowling. With an uncluttered technique, Dhawan continued to pile on the runs and soon reached his 23rd ODI fifty in the 15th over. Sri Lanka didn’t help their cause by testing the middle of the pitch.

It was only after the opening duo compiled a stand of 115, Dhawan was dislodged with Sachith Pathirana picking up the scalp. Shreyas Iyer, however, joined forces with Rohit to up the tempo. Rohit, then changed gears. The highlight of the middle part of the innings was the way he pulled Nuwan Pradeep off the front foot wide of long on.

Shreyas, his partner at the other end, also showed a glimpse of his skills with lofts and late cuts. Iyer completed his maiden ODI fifty in the 38th over with a nudge into the on side. Once Iyer completed his maiden half-century, he took his game to an elevated plane, including a stunning loft down the ground off Pathirana. He was eventually dislodged for a superbly paced innings.

Once Rohit completed his century, he was unstoppable as it rained fours and sixes from his willow. In the 44th over of the innings, he tonked Suranga Lakmal for four sixes. The carnage didn’t end there as he clubbed Pradeep into the stands to get to his 150.

With nine runs required to reach the landmark of 200, he crunched a six off Thisara Perera over long-off and completed the milestone with a single to midwicket. He would have had his heart in his mouth when a better throw from long off could have resulted in his run out on 197. As soon as he got to his double ton, he charged down the track to celebrate the landmark and his teammates gave him a standing ovation.

A couple of facts encapsulates Rohit’s complete domination. He completed the landmark of 100 in 115 deliveries and in his next 38 deliveries, he collected an astounding 108 runs. There was also a period of time when he clobbered six sixes off seven deliveries. Rohit batted like an artist who explored the full range of expression, combining finesse with mesmerising bat-swing and shot selection, merging discipline with desire.

On the other hand, it turned out to be a poor day in the office for Sri Lanka’s bowlers. Nuwan Pradeep ended up with chastening figures of none for 106 from 10 overs.

The deflated Sri Lanka side will have an uphill task on their hands to chase down the target. But the dream of winning a series against India in India for the first time could spur the visitors to do something special.

Brief scores: India 392/4 (Rohit Sharma 208*, Shreyas Iyer 88; Thisara Perera 3-80) vs Sri Lanka

Strange Airport: Gibraltar, World’s Only Airport Runway Intersecting a Road

Strange Airport: Gibraltar Gibraltar Airport, World’s Only Airport Runway Intersecting a Road
Cars wait patiently as a Jumbo taxies on the runway at the Gibraltar Airport.

Gibraltar Airport or North Front Airport is a civilian airport that serves the British overseas territory of Gibraltar, a tiny peninsula with an area of only 6.8 square kilometres. The lack of flat space on Gibraltar means the peninsula’s only runway is bisected by its busiest road, the Winston Churchill Avenue that heads towards the land border with Spain. A pair of flimsy-looking barriers closes vehicular traffic every time a plane lands or departs. Fortunately, it’s not a busy airport. It handles only about 30 flights a week, all flying to and from the United Kingdom.

Gisborne Airport, A Strange Airport : Runway With a Railway Crossing

Gisborne Airport is a undersized regional airport that is situated on the western outskirts of Gisborne, the East Coast of the North Island of New Zealand. The unique thing about this airport is one of the very few airports in the world that has a railway line intersecting the runway. The beautiful Gisborne airport covers a land of 160 hectares has three grass runways and one main runway that are intersected by the Palmerston North – Gisborne Railway Line. The airport has a single terminal with two tarmac gates.

The Tasmania’s North Western Coast, Wynyard Airport also had a railway crossing on the runway but moribund rail traffic forced the closure of rail traffic in early 2005, and thus the Wynyard airport rail crossing is no more operational. At Gisborne Airport on the other hand, the rail route functions actively and so does the airport everyday between 6:30 in the morning and 8:30 at night. After that, the runway is sealed off till morning.

One of the more appealing aspects of the Napier-Gisborne railway line is when the line passes directly on top of the Gisborne Airport runway; trains have to stop and look for clearance from the air traffic control tower to cross the runway and continue down the line. The railway tracks splits the runway approximately in the middle and very often trains or aircraft are stopped until one of them moves on.

Indeed it is a very challenging job for the airport authorities to manage landing at the intersecting runway along the operational rail route which has scheduled departures and arrivals itself. The Gisborne airport is a main link to enter the little region of Gisborne and hosts more than 60 domestic flights, and over 150,0000 passengers fly through this airport each year.

Maharashtra government pushes take-off of 11 new airports

Maharashtra government pushes take-off of 11 new airports

The state government has fast-tracked the development of Multi-modal International Cargo Hub and Airport at Nagpur (MIHAN) and 10 other new airports. The State has set up an 11-member Project Monitoring & Implementation Committee (PMIC), headed by Chief Secretary Sumit Malik, for early clearance of the Request For Proposal (RFP), Concession Agreement and other documents necessary for the bidding process and awarding the contract. PMIC’s members include joint secretary of the Union Civil Aviation Ministry and chairman of the Airports Authority of India.

Recently, a similar PMIC, chaired by the Chief Secretary, approved the financial bid submitted by GVK-led Mumbai International Airport’s (MIAL) to construct the Navi Mumbai International Airport.

MIHAN is an airport project for Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport in Nagpur, hometown of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union Minister of Transport Nitin Gadkari. Ten other airports are being developed at Kolhapur, Shirdi, Amravati, Gondia, Nashik, Jalgaon, Nanded, Solapur, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg.

They are all under the Centre’s Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS), part of the ambitious National Civil Aviation Policy, 2010.

MIHAN aims to exploit Nagpur’s central location and convert the present airport into a major cargo hub with integrated road and rail connectivity. The project is made up of two parts – an international airport that will act as a cargo hub and a Special Economic Zone with a residential zone.

The project cost is envisaged at Rs 2,581 crore, based on 2002 rates and it is expected to attract investment of over Rs 20,000 crore.

An officer from the state Civil Aviation department told DNA, “The PMIC will have a major role in providing timely clearances for RFP, Concession Agreement and other documents necessary for the development of MIHAN and 10 other airports. After PMIC’s approval, the State cabinet will give the final nod.”

As reported by DNA, the state government has appointed the Maharashtra Airports Development Company (MADC) as co-ordinator and facilitator for 28 existing airports, and the development of MIHAN and 10 other new airports under RCS. The state government has already agreed to provide a slew of sops, including tax-cut on air fuel for 10 years, free-of-cost land, and electricity and water at concessional rates.

1921 Movie trailer: Watch Karan Kundrra and Zareen Khan bring back the horror

1921 Movie trailer Watch Karan Kundrra and Zareen Khan bring back the horror

The makers of the 1920 franchise have released the new trailer of their upcoming 1921 Movie trailer featuring Karan Kundrra and Zareen Khan in the lead roles. Karan plays Ayush, a would-be musician who comes to foggy England, in the year 1921, to pursue his artistic training before getting distracted or haunted, by a shape-shifting spirit with serious anger management issues. Enter Rose, played by Zareen, who can see and control spirits.

The 1921 Movie trailer took us back to Victorian building and spooky atmosphere. But this time there are a lot more ghosts, poltergeists, wraiths and aatmas for the movie’s unlucky protagonists to handle. The trailer features the usual Bhattian elements of lilting piano tracks, questionable CGI, and singularly embarrassing attempts at lovemaking. The 1921 Movie trailer has many moments of ghosts and spirits but you anticipate it coming, which makes you lose hope that it will manage to standout like the first one, 1920 starring Adah Sharma.

This is Karan Kundra’ first movie in Bollywood in a leading role. He was earlier seen in ‘Mubarakan’ starring Arjun Kapoor. Meanwhile, for Zarine, this is her first horror film while Karan has earlier worked with Vikram Bhatt in 2012 starrer ‘Horror Story’. Written and directed by Vikram Bhatt, produced by Reliance Entertainment and Vikram Bhatt, ‘1921’ is all set to release on January 12, 2018.

Ram Setu is man-made, says the new Science Channel show ‘What on Earth’

Ram Setu is man-made, says the new Science Channel show ‘What on Earth’

The promo of an upcoming show on Discovery Communications-owned Science Channel, has made the claims that the Ram Setu bridge between India and Sri Lanka was not formed naturally but it is man-made, and if these claims are true, they can prove to be one of the biggest discoveries in recent times about the much talked about Ram Setu.

The Show called ‘What on Earth’ will air the episode called Ancient Land Bridge on the Science channel. The promo of the show has given out plenty of details already, in the promo American geologists and scientist are seen talking about the bridge and explaining how it could be man-made.

This discovery certainly puts its weight behind the Hindu mythological text in Ramayana that claimed that Lord Ram built the Ram Setu Bridge to travel to Sri Lanka. However, the promo does not state when the promo will be aired.

Sethusamudram shipping canal project

It acquired political prominence when the Indian government planned the Sethusamudram shipping canal project, meant to create a shipping route through the Gulf of Munnar. Ships that currently sail from the West coast of India bound for the eastern hemisphere currently have to circumnavigate Sri Lanka because the Gulf of Munnar is shallow and cannot be used by ships. The Sethusamudram project aims to reduce the distance the ships have to travel.

The News18 report said that this would reduce the distance between India’s west and east coasts by about 350 nautical miles, saving about 10-30 hours of sailing time. A bridge would also add to India’s exchequer through shipping fees, it was felt.

However, doing so would damage the Adam’s Bridge section of the maritime border between India and Sri Lanka. The matter reached the Supreme Court, with several petitions challenging the government’s plan of dredging the Ram Setu to construct its shipping channel.

To resolve this dispute, the Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR) was tasked with researching if the chain of islands were man-made or historic, said a report on The Telegraph. The BJP, which was in the Opposition at the time the project was first conceived, had been opposing it citing people’s beliefs that Lord Ram created the path to reach Lanka to rescue Sita and that the islets should be protected.

In March this year, ICHR chairman Y Sudershan Rao said their research could influence the government’s plans for the future of the Sethusamudram project. “We will look for material confirmation on whether it was a natural phenomenon or some human efforts were there,” Rao was quoted as saying in the report.

The problem, however, Rao said, is that there was a “dark period” in history — between 4th Millennium BC and the 1st Millennium BC, and that they were trying to analyse this period in greater depth.

Shame on Narendra Modi for making wild allegations against Manmohan Singh: Sharad Pawar

Shame on Narendra Modi for making wild allegations against Manmohan Singh: Sharad Pawar

NAGPUR: Veteran politician and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president Sharad Pawar has heavily criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for alleging that his predecessor Manmohan Singh was conspiring with Pakistan for the BJP’s defeat in Gujarat.

Addressing a massive rally on after leading a massive ‘Jan Aakrosh Halla Bol’ procession, the NCP supremo Sharad Pawar said PM Modi should be ashamed of making such “wild allegations” against Singh, whom “no one in the world could point fingers at”.

“Shame on you, prime minister, for making such allegations! You have made the allegations against this country’s former prime minister (Manmohan Singh) and former defence officials,” Pawar, a former defence minister himself, said.

“Ever since the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government has taken power, it has destroyed the country, it is indulging in extremely dirty politics and it has invoked Pakistan merely to cling to power. It is a very sad development,” Pawar added.

“This attempt to invoke Pakistan was made to divert the people’s attention towards the government’s failures in addressing the farmers’ issues, lack of jobs and other people’s issues,” Pawar alleged.

“The Modi government has not solved the issues of farmers and other issues the country is facing, but he is bringing the Pakistan angle as a diversionary tactic during the Gujarat elections,” Pawar said.

Modi, while speaking at a poll rally in Gujarat on Sunday, had sought to link the dinner meeting hosted by Aiyar for Pakistani dignitaries and attended by Manmohan Singh, among others, with the ongoing Assembly polls and a conspiracy against the BJP.

Pawar made the comments while addressing the massive rally jointly with the Congress and other parties against the BJP-Shiv Sena government.

Sharad Pawar – who led a political procession after 37 years, said when Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis was informed of Tuesday’s procession, he responded that he “would show them their place when they came to him”.

“The CM has threatened us. He has complete authority to govern the state, but if he threatens to throw us in jail, the farmers of the state are powerful enough to uproot you from power,” Pawar warned.

Senior Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad also alleged that Modi has stooped to a low level and levelling allegations against the people of his own country.

The procession, signaling a realignment of the political opposion, was led by an ailing Pawar – who recently underwent a toe surgery, but he appeared fit, cheerful and in full form.

Joined by an estimated 200,000 farmers and party activists from entire Vidarbha region of eastern Maharasthra, the procession started from Dhanwate National College grounds and slowly wended its way to the Maharashtra Legislature which has currently assembled here for the Winter Session in the state’s second capital.

It culminated there into a rally which was addressed by Pawar, several senior NCP leaders Praful Patel, Tatkare, Leader of Opposition in Council Dhanjay Munde, Congress’s former Union Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, state Congress President Ashok Chavan, Leader of Opposition in Assembly Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil and others from both parties.

Tuesday’s procession-cum-rally was part of the ongoing agitation launched by the NCP on December 1, in different parts of the state intended to “condemn and awaken the sleeping state government on its various unfulfilled promises” for the people of Maharashtra.

Besides the national parties, the procession saw participation of activists and leaders of other smaller and regional parties like Samajwadi Party, Peasants & Workers Party, Republican Party of India-G and RPI-K, farmers groups, etc

RIL owes over Rs 1,900 crore in surcharge dues to MMRDA: CM Devendra Fadnavis

RIL owes over Rs 1,900 crore in surcharge dues to MMRDA: CM Devendra Fadnavis

NAGPUR: Reliance Industries (RIL ) owes “additional surcharge” of more than Rs 1,900 crore to state- run agency MMRDA for delay in development of plots in Mumbai, the Maharashtra Assembly was informed today.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis gave this information while responding to a query by MLA Sharad Sonawane during the Question Hour of the Winter Session, which is held in Nagpur.

The MLA from Junnar in Pune district had sought to know the names of the companies which have not paid surcharge for delay in plot development to the MMRDA (Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority).

In a written reply in the Lower House, Fadnavis said: “Construction in the G-block of Bandra Kurla Complex owned by MMRDA was not completed by some firms within the (stipulated) four-year period. Hence, additional surcharge for such a delay has not been paid yet by some companies, including RIL.”

“The dues include Rs 441.08 crore for plot number C-66 and Rs 1,538.73 crore for plot number C-64 from RIL alone,” said Fadnavis, who is also Chairman of the authority.

RIL is constructing a convention-cum-exhibition centre in Bandra Kurla Complex, an upscale business district in Mumbai’s suburbs.

There was no immediate comment from RIL on the issue.

Fadnavis said the other companies which have “not yet paid their dues are the Indian Newspaper Society (Rs 56.02 crore for plot number C-63, Jamunaben Foundation (Rs 24.09 crore for plot numbers SF 7 and 9B), Talim Research Foundation (Rs 33.39 crore for plot number SF 6) and Naman Hotel Rs 31.68 crore for plot numbers C-57 and 58”.
These companies have not paid the surcharge for the last many years, he said.

The outstanding figures were issued by MMRDA under RTI queries.

Jail term, fine for selling mineral water above MRP: Report

The Centre on Tuesday informed the SC that there was a provision in law that penalises selling of packaged drinking mineral water above its mrp

The Centre on Tuesday informed the Supreme Court that there was a provision in law that penalises selling of packaged mineral water above its maximum retail price (MRP). The law also proposes a jail term for the habitual offending restaurants or by similar entities or individuals. The government while backing its argument says charging more than MRP is against consumer interests and it also results in evasion of tax, according to News18.

“Sale of packaged water over MRP by hotels and restaurants may have implications regarding tax evasion as a bottle purchased by a hotel at cost price, which should be sold at MRP or less, is being sold at much higher prices, leading to possible loss of additional revenue to the government in the form of service tax or excise duty etc.,” said the government.

The Ministry of Consumer Affairs which was representing the government in the apex court filed its response to the petition brought in by the Federation of Hotels and Restaurants Association of India. According to the ministry, the Legal Metrology Act bars overcharging for packaged mineral water and also recommends monetary fine or a jail term for first offence.

Section 36 of the LMA clearly says anyone found selling, distributing or delivering any pre-packaged commodity not in conformity to the declarations on the package shall be punished with fine of up to Rs 25,000 for the first offence. The monetary penalty can go up to Rs 50,000 for second offence and can further rise to Rs 1 lakh and a year’s jail term if the violation occurs yet again.

Tuesday’s affidavit by the central government comes in response to the petition filed by the hotels association of India that had challenged a 2015 Delhi High Court order upholding statutory provisions with regard to packaged drinking water.
