Vice-President Urges Jan Andolan to Safeguard Democracy and Economic Nationalism

In an impassioned address at the centenary celebration of Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University, the Vice-President of India, Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar, called upon citizens to initiate a Jan Andolan (people’s movement) to ensure that elected representatives fulfill their constitutional duties diligently. He expressed concern over the erosion of the “Temples of Democracy,” cautioning that if these spaces for dialogue and debate are not protected, they might be infiltrated by unaccountable forces.

Drawing inspiration from the Constituent Assembly, the Vice-President emphasized the importance of constructive dissent and discussion rather than resorting to disruptive protests. He urged citizens to embrace the spirit of coordination, cooperation, and collaboration, which played a pivotal role in shaping the country’s foundational principles.

On the matter of economic nationalism, the Vice-President emphasized that fiscal considerations should not compromise the core values of the nation. He encouraged citizens to be mindful of optimal resource utilization and stressed that financial capacity should not grant anyone the right to recklessly exploit natural resources.

The Vice-President also stressed the need to safeguard India’s reputation on the global stage and discouraged attempts to tarnish or demean constitutional institutions. He urged citizens to counter anti-India narratives and work in the best interests of the nation.

Addressing the students, the Vice-President highlighted the importance of embracing diverse viewpoints and keeping an open mind. He encouraged them to be critical thinkers, avid learners, and pioneers in their chosen fields.

The event was graced by the presence of dignitaries, including the Governor of Maharashtra, Shri Ramesh Bais, Union Minister for Highways and Road Transport, Shri Nitin Gadkari, Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Shri Devendra Fadnavis, and the Vice-Chancellor of Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University, Dr. Subhash Chaudhari.

Nagpur: Distressed by the proposed imposition of 28% GST on online gaming, bringing them on par with casinos and horse racing, online gamers from across the state of Maharashtra have joined gamers from other cities under the banner of ‘Indian Gamers United’ to demand its reversal.

Several gamers assembled at RBI Square, Nagpur Today, and conducted a peaceful demonstration, appealing to the policymakers for a more tax-friendly online gaming regime. These gamers were carrying banners and placards and raised slogans drawing the attention of the policymakers to support them.

These gamers are concerned that online games are fast emerging as an option for young people to use their gaming skills to earn money in their free time and become part of the gig economy. Now, an unviable rate of GST at the rate of 28% on online games will kill this growing industry untimely, sending this growing tribe of online gamers into a vacuum.

The 50th GST Council meeting held on 11th July 2023 proposed the imposition of a 28% GST on online gaming, along with casinos and horse racing at full face value. Under the new regime a levy of 28% GST will be made on the total value of the consideration received in online gaming, including the entry fee. In this sweeping decision, the council has also put an end to the debate on “games of skill or chance, by deciding to treat all games at par. This is a major deviation from the currently prevailing tax regime on online gaming.

Currently, online gaming companies pay the government a GST of 18 percent levied on the Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR) or the platform fee. The currently prevailing GST regime also differentiates online games based on skills versus chance, something which is also being supported by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEITY) in their draft regulation for the industry. Besides this, a TDS of 30 percent is deducted from the winnings. Online gamers and poker players did not have any additional impact of GST on the value of bets placed by them, except for the platform fee collected by the online gaming company, till now.

With the introduction of the new GST amendments, a gamer will have to pay 28 percent GST on the amount deposited to play the game. Besides this, he will have to pay the platform fee and bear 30 percent TDS on net winnings. The high tax rate will make it more expensive for players to participate in online gaming. This could lead to players seeking out offshore or illegitimate platforms that do not charge GST, or that charge a lower rate.

India’s gaming industry is expected to become a $5 billion industry by 2025, growing at a compounded annual growth rate of 28-30 percent. The real-money gaming segment generated over ₹10,000 crore in revenue in 2022. The proposed GST rate is likely to have a major adverse impact on these figures.

~The previous three phases collectively reached over 27000 people across India’s coastal states

~The 4th phase will offer opportunities for volunteers to experience mangroves through curated educational visits and more

Godrej & Boyce, the flagship company of the Godrej Group, in collaboration with WWF-India (Worldwide Fund for Nature-India) today announced the Phase-4 of their “Magical Mangroves” conservation awareness campaign. First launched in 2020, the volunteer-driven campaign trained more than 200 volunteers Mangrove Ambassadors who have helped sensitise over 27000+citizens across the 7 coastal states of India. Additionally, the campaign has reached millions of Indians through thematic social media posts in the last three years. This campaign’s key features are capacity building of Volunteers, outreach and Awareness through the trained Volunteers, knowledge building through Expert Talks, competitions and a robust social media campaign.

The Magical Mangroves programme which runs in collaboration between WWF-India and Godrej & Boyce, urges people to volunteer to spread awareness for the protection and preservation of mangrove forests, which are imperative for the survival of communities living across the coastal belt.

Building upon the success of the previous editions, the organisations have curated the new phase to encourage volunteers including students to take this programme forward. In Phase 4, the programme covers 7 coastal states of India – Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh& Telangana, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Gujarat. Moreover, the programme is segmented into three key components – Skilling, Awareness, and Action. A new batch of 90+ Mangrove Ambassadors from all backgrounds will receive comprehensive training which will equip them to lead informative sessions and promote the importance of mangrove habitats. For the first time since the lockdown, the campaign will witness an amplified impact through face-to-face sessions with schools, colleges, and the general public.

Speaking about the significance of the Magical Mangroves campaign, Mr Jamshyd Godrej, Chairman & Managing Director Godrej & Boyce remarked “We have been working together with WWF-India for many years to promote the conservation of mangroves. Further enhancing the program, are a range of interactive competitions, including quizzes. The outreach sessions planned as a part of the campaign are expected to engage close to 21,000 students and citizens across the 7 coastal states.  A key feature of the new phase is the introduction of Mangrove Trails – a practical, hands-on experience for select volunteers to learn about the magnificent mangrove habitats. Mangrove Trails is intended to inspire action for the conservation of the nation’s rich biodiversity.

Speaking about education and awareness as critical elements for conserving biodiversity Mr. Ravi Singh, CEO of, WWF-India addedWWF-India works in multiple mangrove habitats, including the magnificent Sundarbans, which support a vast array of threatened species. Mangroves act as natural barriers to climate change and serve as nurseries and breeding grounds for many aquatic species. Their role is crucial in controlling coastal erosion, which is vital to protecting the topography of our coasts. Recognising the role of youth and citizens as major stakeholders in conservation, the Magical Mangroves movement seeks to build the Volunteers’ environmental awareness and knowledge of these essential and fragile ecosystems and enable positive action for their conservation.”

Over three successful years, the Magical Mangroves programme has mobilized 200+ volunteers, conducting 340+ webinars. The initiative also involved sessions led by distinguished experts such as Mr Vasudevan, PCCF and MD of Forest Development Corporation of Maharashtra Dr K. Kathiresan referred to as the Mangrove Man of India Dr Anamitra Anurag Danda – Director, Sunderbans Program WWF-India Mr Dhritiman Mukherjee, celebrated Wildlife Photographer and Dr Kiran Shankar Mali – Assistant Director, Livelihood Development, Mangrove Foundation.

As a founding member of the India Wetlands Coalition (formerly India Mangroves Coalition) alongside the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Godrej & Boyce is dedicated to the conservation of India’s larger wetland ecosystem of which mangroves are a key part. Beyond maintaining the largest privately-owned mangrove tract in Vikhroli, Mumbai, the company actively fosters research and public awareness for mangrove preservation. Mumbai: Wockhardt Ltdglobal pharmaceutical and biotechnology is aiming to turn around its business operations and has perused important strategic initiatives for the same. The company is eying big on the restructuring of the US Business, vaccine tie-up with Serum for vaccine manufacturing in the UK, and Novel Antibiotics research to drive the business forward. For Q4FY23, the company posted strong operational performance with 7% Y-o-Y growth in revenue with a three-fold jump in the EBITDA to Rs. 47 crores.

In the restructuring of its US operations, the company is shutting down its manufacturing facility at Morton Grove and transferring the site to contract manufacturing organizations. This restructuring is estimated to result in annual savings of ~US$ 12 Mn. Post restructuring company looks to maintain sales with a 40 percent gross margin and manufacture a few products with higher margins through a third party.

Additionally, in March 2022, the company signed a 51:49 (Wockhardt 51 and Serum 49) Joint Venture with the Serum Institute of India for manufacturing vaccines at its UK facility. As a contribution to reserving capacity, Wockhardt has received a consideration of 10 million Pounds. The contract with Serum is for 150 million doses across 15 years and it has already identified two vaccines for the same. The company plans on manufacturing these vaccines post regulatory approvals and exhibit batches over the next 8-12 months.

Man Defies Odds After Severe Bike Accident-miraculous Recovery at SMHRC

New Healthcare Milestone: Shalinitai Meghe Hospital Now ESIS-Approved for Industrial Workers Enhancing Healthcare Access for Industrial Workers

In an incident on March 31, 2023, a 38-year-old male was involved in a serious road traffic accident (RTA) when his bike skidded near Tirora Road in Gondia. The victim suffered multiple injuries, including a necrotic wound on the abdominal wall measuring approximately 20x22cm. He initially received primary treatment at a private hospital in Gondia, where he underwent surgeries for fractures in both lower limbs, mandible, and left wrist. Due to the severity of the abdominal wall necrosis and necrosis in his right leg, the patient was transferred to a private hospital in Nagpur where he was not improving.

Subsequently, the patient’s general condition improved, leading to a transfer from the ICU to a general ward for ongoing care. Regular dressing was performed, and the patient received physiotherapy and a high-protein diet for better nutrition. On Day 13, upper and lower arch bar removal was performed after consultation with the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon (OMFS).

Highlighting this successful recovery Dr. Rajiv Sonarkar, Professor of Surgery, SMHRC stated that the patient subsequently underwent split-thickness skin grafting (STSG). The procedure was successful. The patient’s general condition improved, and he was able to mobilize out of bed. He got stable hemodynamically, he was discharged from the hospital with advice for follow-up. Mumbai: HDFC Bank, India’s leading private sector bank, today announced the launch of a UPI QR code interoperable with India’s sovereign digital currency, Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC). With this, HDFC Bank becomes one of the first banks in the country to complete the integration process. The interoperable UPI QR code allows HDFC Bank merchants who have been onboarded on the bank’s CBDC platform, to accept payments from their customers in the form of Digital Rupee currency, boosting usage of CBDC in day-to-day transactions.

The initiative is an extension to the CBDC pilot launched by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), last year. CBDC or Digital Rupee is a tokenised digital version of the Indian Rupee, issued by the RBI as a Central Bank Digital Currency.

An interoperable QR code enables a basic QR payment acceptance terminal to support Scan & Pay feature from various factors & payment options. It provides freedom to accept payments using the same QR from various form factors.

Key benefits of the UPI QR Code interoperable with CBDC:

For Consumers:

  • Transact money available in their CBDC wallet across the UPI QR code
  • No need to scan different QR codes at the same merchant

For Merchants:

  • Only need to display one QR code at the storefront or through the acquiring bank’s mobile application
  • No need for merchants to change their existing QR codes

Upon arrival at SMHRC & DBASI hospital, the patient was found to be heavily reliant on inotropic support and exhibited an extremely poor Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score. To ensure the patient’s airway protection, he was intubated and placed on a ventilator. The medical team promptly initiated a treatment plan consisting of higher antibiotic administration and other supportive measures. Following approximately one week on the ventilator, the patient’s condition gradually improved, enabling the medical team to successfully wean them off the ventilator. Subsequently, the patient’s condition stabilized after spending approximately 12 days in the ICU.

In response to the patient’s improvement, Dr. Neha Goenka Agrawal, in charge of the Critical Care Division, SMHRC & DBASI expressed that the dedication of the ICU team and the total faith of relatives played a significant role. The team consists of Dr. Amol Pise, Dr. Abhijeet Lode, Dr. Dhruv Shah, and Dr. Renuka along with a dedicated nursing team, Br. Sachin, Br. Nikesh, Chitralekha & Sr.Priyanka led by Br. 1. How are you celebrating your birthday this year?

On my birthday, I prefer the company of loved ones and indulging in tasty food. What better way to celebrate being a food lover than by enjoying the finest culinary treats? I have given my wife a list of dishes I want, and she’s excited to fulfill my gastronomic wishes. Afterward, we will visit a nearby mall where the kids can have fun in the game zone, returning memories of my childhood. Finally, we will gather with a few close friends at our favorite restaurant for the celebration.

2. What are your plans with your on-screen family of Happu Ki Ultan Paltan?

My on-screen family feels like an extended family to me. We have been together for four years, and the celebration would not be complete without them. Surprisingly, I don’t have to organize anything for them because they take the initiative to plan and surprise me every year. Whether it’s my co-stars or the crew, everyone has consistently made me feel extraordinary on my birthdays. Since I will be shooting this year, I eagerly await to witness how the day unfolds on their sets and how they create lasting memories to make this birthday unforgettable.

3. What led you to choose acting as your career?

My passion for acting has been with me from a young age. During my school breaks, I discovered my true calling when watching movies with my mother for countless hours. The realization struck me, and I knew deep down that pursuing a career in acting was my ultimate desire. This led me to venture to Lucknow, where I immersed myself in theatre and street performances, such as Nukad Natak, for several years. It was there that my journey as an actor began to take shape.

  1. How do you personally define success as an artist?

As artists, we aim to engage and leave a lasting impression on our audiences. When we receive applause in response, we know we have achieved success. I realized this when my portrayal of Daroga Happu Singh gained immense popularity. Currently, he is the only character in the television industry appearing simultaneously in two shows. This accomplishment as an artist is truly significant and fills me with pride.

2. What aspect of acting brings you the most enjoyment?

Bringing smiles to my audience is my greatest joy. It’s not just about silly faces, expressions, or jokes. It’s about crafting relatable moments and dialogues that resonate deeply. Our show, Happu Ki Ultan Paltan, has accomplished this wonderfully. Each character’s unique personality and catchphrases have connected beautifully with the audience, providing endless entertainment. We feel incredibly fortunate to have been a conduit for spreading immense joy and laughter in the lives of our viewers.

3. Which role in your career has been your favorite so far?

It undoubtedly is the character of Daroga Happu Singh! The role has given me the priceless gifts of recognition, wealth, and the unwavering adoration and encouragement of the audience, fulfilling every artist’s deepest aspiration. I am fortunate to have this opportunity, and I will strive to maintain my utmost efforts in captivating and entertaining my viewers.

4. Any challenges you come across with a highly popular character?

Although comedy in acting may appear effortless, creating an unforgettable character like Daroga Happu Singh involves numerous factors. Portraying comedy on-screen is always challenging, particularly when maintaining perfect comedic timing amidst retakes. Humor can only be partially mastered, but we strive to reach our best as artists. Additionally, shooting for extended hours while wearing prosthetics and a mustache can be challenging, but I have grown accustomed to them. I love preparing for my role, getting ready in hair and makeup, and eagerly waiting for the director to say, “Action!“.

5. Did you ever think the cameo in the show would get you this long?

I was thrilled to be chosen for a cameo in Bhabiji Ghar Par Hai. Working alongside talented actors I admired on TV was an incredible feeling. Little did I know that this role would become a defining moment in my life and give me so much fame. It was pure luck that I landed the role of Daroga Happu Singh, and I am grateful that it came my way. The audience immediately resonated with the character. It struck an instant chord with them, capturing their attention through Happu’s impeccable comic timing, fun catchphrases, and distinctive potbellied appearance.
