Nagpur: Orange City Works (OCW) faced the ire of citizens of East Nagpur after the 24 hours water supply shutdown stretched to over 4 days. With early summer heat already making life tough. Non-availability of drinking water supply tested the patience of people. Finally when it become intolerable and no response from either OCW nor Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) authorities, people decided to take laws in their own hands. On Wednesday, people stormed the office of OCW at Lakadganj Zone and after arguing with officials they cut loose and locked the office. People also went on rampage, damaging the furniture and appliances.
Incidentally, public representatives of the area too failed to provide any relief by way of arranging tankers leaving public frustration to boil over. There was eerie silence at civic headquarters also which otherwise is pro-active on public grievances, which is quite surprising. It may be mentioned that OCW had provided 24 hours shutdown for water supply to National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) for facilitating inter-connection of Pardi and Bhandewadi 700 mm diameter main pipelines.
The shutdown period was notified from 10 am of March 7 to 10 am till March 8. However, it is learnt that NHAI vendor faced some problems during utility shifting and the shutdown was therefore forced to be extended. Finally with mounting public pressure the inter-connection was completed at 2 pm on Wednesday. About 3 elevated service reservoirs (ESR) that of Pardi 1 and 2, and Bhandewadi went dry.
They together cater to about 15,0000 customers or around one lakh citizens who had to sweat it out for nearly four days even as stocked water to ran out, said the people. When contacted Sachin Dravekar, PRO, OCW, said they are extremely sorry for the inconvenience faced by the citizens owing to extended period of shutdown in power supply.
