Popular social media platform Instagram has unveiled a new feature called Reels Remix which takes inspiration from TikTok.
The feature is similar in nature to the popular TikTok feature called Duet. This new feature would let users upload a video next to another user`s video.
The feature was introduced by TikTok and is quite famous among creators who share dance and music videos. To remix a reel, tap the three-dot menu on a reel and select “Remix this Reel.” From there, you can record your reel or upload pre-recorded footage.
There is also a volume control option available in the new feature. You can also control the volume for the original audio or your recorded audio, and add a voiceover, along with other editing functions.
Only new reels will have remixes enabled automatically, but if you already have a reel that you want people to be able to remix, you can manually turn that on by tapping that three-dot menu on your own video and selecting “Enable Remixing.”
If you want to turn off remixing on all your reels, you can do so via your broader profile settings. Instagram launched Reels in India in July 2020. The Facebook-owned application came up with a short video feature after TikTok, which was hugely popular in India, was banned by the government.
The photo-sharing platform introduced Reels with a similar format but did not launch a standalone app for it. The feature is available within the app. Instagram has added a Reels button to the home screen and even ensured the videos made the cut for its global Lite app.
Nagpur: In a curious incident, a married woman eloped with her paramour after robbing her husband of gold ornaments and cash. The accused woman also took her 6-year old daughter along with her after betraying her husband. Ganeshpeth police have registered a case and are investigating the matter that occurred between January 2019 and September 2020.
The complainant, Sandeep Baban Vishwakarma (34), resident of House No. 90, behind Rajwada Palace, Ganjipeth, told police that the accused Gunjan Sandeep Vishwakarma (30) is his wife. He got married to her in accordance with social tradition and has a six-year-old daughter. Sandeep further told police that he works as Supervisor in a UAE-based construction company – Shobha Constructions. He used to come to Nagpur sometimes.
In the meantime, the accused Gunjan connived her friend named Girish Katara (30), a native of Katara, Jaipur, Rajasthan, and hatched a plan. The accused Gunjan betrayed her husband by eloping with her paramour Girish slyly and robbing him of cash Rs 40,000 and gold ornaments worth Rs 4.80 lakh kept in an almirah. The accused Gunjan also took Sandeep’s 6-year old daughter along with her.
Ganeshpeth PSI Shinde, based on the complaint of Sandeep Vishwakarma, booked the accused Gunjan Vishwakarma and Girish Katara under Sections 406, 34 of the IPC and launched an investigation into the matter.
Nagpur: Raging over quarrel on Holi and to settle the score, a man and his three sons brutally murdered a youth by stabbing him with a knife in Jaripatka police area late Thursday night. One of the accused also hit the cousin brother of the deceased with an iron rod and injured him seriously. All the four accused have been arrested.
The deceased has been identified as Rohit Kisnaji Waghmare (25), resident of Lane No. 12, Republican Nagar, Jaripatka.
The complainant, Piyush Kishore Bhaisare (24), resident of Lashkaribagh, near Mahakashyap Bouddha Vihar, told police that he along with Rohit was going somewhere around 10.30 pm on Thursday. Both Piyush and Rohit had a quarrel with the accused Harshad Devidas Jambhulkar (34), Bhupendra Devidas Jambhulkar (33), Shailendra Devidas Jambhulkar (26), and Devidas Jethaji Jambhulkar (60) on Holi day. Raging over the fight and to settle the score, the accused father and sons accosted Piyush and Rohit and picked up an argument. During the heat of the wordy duel, the four accused attacked Rohit with a knife and stabbed him in the chest. Rohit collapsed and died on the spot. The four accused also hit the cousin brother of the deceased with an iron rod and injured him seriously.
Nagpur Jaripatka PSI Partale, acting on Piyush Bhaisare’s complaint, booked the four accused under Sections 302, 324, 323, 341, 504, 34 of the IPC read with Section 135 of Maharashtra Police Act and arrested them. Further probe is underway.
मुंबईसह राज्यात करोनाचे रुग्ण वेगाने वाढत असताना रक्तदानाचा वेग कमालीचा घसरल्यामुळे राज्यात आजघडीला केवळ आठवडाभर पुरेल एवढाच रक्तसाठा शिल्लक राहिल्याची धक्कादायक बाब उघडकीस आली आहे. राज्यातील सर्व रक्तपेढ्यांमध्ये मिळून केवळ २५,६०९ रक्ताच्या पिशव्यांचा साठा शिल्लक आहे तर मुंबईत केवळ ३१७८ रक्ताच्या पिशव्या रक्तपेढ्यांमध्ये उपलब्ध आहेत.
करोना रुग्णांना एकीकडे प्लाझ्मा मिळत नाही तर दुसरीकडे गर्भवती महिलांना बाळंतपणासाठी (सिझेरियन शस्त्रक्रियेसाठी) तसेच विविध शस्त्रक्रियांसाठी रक्त मिळणे कठीण होऊन बसले आहे. पहिल्या टप्प्यातील करोनाच्या काळात मुख्यमंत्री उद्धव ठाकरे यांनी रक्तदान वाढावे यासाठी विशेष प्रयत्न केले होते. राज्यभरात शिवसेनेच्या शाखा शाखांमधून रक्तदान करण्यात आले होते. सिद्धिविनायक मंदिर न्यासाचे अध्यक्ष आदेश बांदेकर यांनी जागोजागी रक्तदान शिबीरांचे करोना काळात आयोजन केले होते. मात्र हीच परिस्थिती आगामी काळातही येणार हे ओळखून ‘राज्य रक्तसंक्रमण परिषदे’ला विशेष आर्थिक मदत व मनुष्यबळ उपलब्ध करून देण्याची गरज होती. मात्र अर्थसंकल्पात आरोग्य विभागाच्या तोंडाला पाने पुसण्यात आली तसेच रक्तदान कार्यक्रमासाठी कोणतीही विशेष तरतूद करण्यात आली नसल्याचे आरोग्य विभागाच्या अधिकाऱ्यांनी सांगितले.
प्रामुख्याने दरवर्षी एप्रिल, मे व जून महिन्यात रक्ताचा तुटवडा जाणवतो. यामागे शाळा कॉलेजना असलेल्या सुट्टी, समाजसेवक तसेच रक्तदान क्षेत्रात काम करणाऱ्या संस्थांचे कार्यकर्ते सुट्टीनिमित्त बाहेरगावी जाणे आदी अनेक कारणे असतात. गेले वर्षभर बहुतेक खासगी कंपन्यांनीही वर्क फ्रॉम होम सुरु केल्याचाही मोठा फटका आम्हाला बसल्याचे ‘राज्य रक्त संक्रमण परिषदे’ प्रमुख सहाय्यक संचालक डॉ थोरात यांनी सांगितले. राज्यातील रक्तपेढ्यांमध्ये आजघडीला आठवडाभर पुरेल एवढाच रक्तसाठा असला तरी आम्ही सिद्धिविनायक, लालबागचा राजासह राज्यातील शेकडो स्वयंसेवी संस्थांना रक्तदान शिबिरे आयोजित करण्याचे आवाहन केले आहे. तसेच सर्व रक्तपेढी प्रमुखांनाही रक्तदान शिबिरे घेण्यास सांगितले आहे. आमच्यापुढे सर्वात मोठी अडचण आहे ती लसीकरणाची. राष्ट्रीय मार्गदर्शक तत्वानुसार दुसऱ्या लसीकरणानंतर किमान २८ दिवस रक्तदान करू नये असे सांगण्यात आले आहे. त्यामुळे रक्तदाते मिळण्यात अडचण वाढू शकते, यामुळे लसीकरणापूर्वी एकदा रक्तदान करा असे आवाहन आम्ही करत असल्याचे डॉ. थोरात यांनी सांगितले.
राज्यात आजघडीला ३४५ रक्तपेढ्या आहेत तर मुंबईत ५८ रक्तपेढ्या असून आजघडीला राज्यात केवळ २५ हजार रक्ताच्या पिशव्या शिल्लक आहेत तर मुंबईत ३१७८ रक्ताच्या पिशव्या शिल्लक असून जेमतेम आठवडाभरचा हा साठा आहे. गेल्यावर्षी मार्च महिन्यात ५५ हजाराहून जास्त रक्तपिशव्यांचा साठा रक्तपेढ्यांमध्ये होता. आता केवळ २५ हजार रक्तांच्या पिशव्या शिल्लक आहेत. एकट्या मुंबईची रक्ताची वार्षिक गरज ही अडीच लाख रक्ताच्या पिशव्यांची असून महिन्याला २२ हजारापेक्षा जास्त रक्ताच्या पिशव्यांची गरज रुग्णांसाठी असते. आज केईएम, शीव, नायरसह मुंबईतील बहुतेक रुग्णालयांतील रक्तपेढ्यांमध्ये ५५ ते १०० एवढ्याच रक्ताच्या पिशव्याचा साठा शिल्लक आहे.
यंदा उन्हाळ्याबरोबर करोनामुळे रक्तदान शिबिरे घेण्यात अनेक अडचणींचा सामना करावा लागेत आहे. ते कमी ठरावे म्हणून लसीकरणानंतर २८ दिवस रक्तदान करू नये अशी मार्गदर्शन तत्वे केंद्रीय आरोग्य मंत्रालयाने जारी केल्यामुळे रक्तसंकलन करणे हे रक्तपेढ्यांसाठी मोठे आव्हान बनले आहे. त्यातच सरकारकडून आरोग्य खाते व रक्तदानासाठी मोठी आर्थिक उपेक्षा केली जात असल्यामुळे ऐच्छिक रक्तदान आगामी काळात मोठ्या प्रमाणात घटेल असे रक्तदान क्षेत्रातील जाणकारांचे म्हणणे आहे. आकडेवारीच्या भाषेत सांगायचे झाल्यास २०१७-१८ च्या अर्थसंकल्पात राज्य रक्त संक्रमण परिषदेसाठी ४४ कोटी रुपयांची तरतूद केली होती मात्र प्रत्यक्षात ५.६१ कोटी रुपयेच देण्यात आले. २०१८-१९ मध्ये २५ कोटी तरतूद केली तर प्रत्यक्षात १७.५० कोटी रुपये दिले. २०१९-२० मध्ये २५ कोटींची तरतूद मात्र प्रत्यक्षात ८ कोटी दिले तर २०२०-२१ मध्ये २० कोटींची तरतूद अर्थसंकल्पात दाखवली असून प्रत्यक्षात फारच थोडी रक्कम वितरित केली आहे. आरोग्य विभागाला तसेच रक्त संक्रमण परिषदेला मुळातच कमी निधीची तरतूद करायची आणि प्रत्यक्षात तेही पैसे द्यायचे नाहीत असे वर्षानुवर्षे सुरु असून करोना काळातील आरोग्य विभागाची जीवतोड मेहनत लक्षात घेऊनही यात काहीही बदल झाला नसल्याची खंत आरोग्य विभागातील अनेक डॉक्टरांनी व्यक्त केली. रक्ताची तीव्र टंचाई निर्माण झाली की मग मात्र आरोग्य विभागाच्या नावाने आगपाखड करायची हेच केवळ सुरु आहे, असेही आरोग्य विभागाच्या डॉक्टरांचे म्हणणे आहे.

बिहारच्या औरंगाबादेत होतेय शेती
बरं हॉप-शूट्स या भाजीची चर्चा नेमकी आताच का होतेय हा प्रश्न अनेकांना पडला असेल. तर, हॉप-शूट्स चर्चेत येण्याचं कारण म्हणजे जगातील सर्वात महागडी भाजी चक्क भारतात पिकवली जातेय. बिहार राज्यातील औरंगाबाद जिल्ह्यातील अमरेश सिंह नावाचा शेतकरी या भाजीची शेती करतोय. मिळालेल्या माहितीनुसार हॉप शूट्स या भाजीच्या फुलाला ‘हॉप कोन्स’ म्हणतात. या फुलाचा उपयोग बियर तयार करण्यासाठी केला जातो. तर या हॉप-शूट्सच्या फांद्यांचा उपयोग भाजी तयार करण्यासाठी केला जातो.
थेट आएएस अधिकाऱ्याने घेतली दखल
दरम्यान, शेतकऱ्याच्या या शेतीची दखल थेट आयएएस अधिकारी सुप्रिया साहू यांनी घेतली आहे. याच कारणामुळे हॉप-शूट्सच्या शेतीची चर्चा संपूर्ण भारतभर होतेय. त्यांनी सांगितलेल्या माहितीनुसार हॉप-शूट्स ही जगातील सर्वात महागडी भाजी असून औरंगाबाद जिल्ह्यातील अमेरश सिंह हे या भाजीची शेती करतात. अशा प्रकारची शेती करणारे भारतातील ते पहिलेच शेतकरी आहेत. सुप्रिया साहू यांनी सांगितल्याप्रमाणे अशा प्रकारची शेती ही भारतीय शेतकऱ्यांसाठी गेमचेंजर ठरू शकते.

राज्याची उपराजधानी नागपूर कोरोनाच्या विळख्यात आली आहे. सोबतच इथे मृत्यूची संख्या वाढत चालली आहे. दर दिवसाला 3 हजारापेक्षा जास्त रुग्ण कोरोना पॉझिटिव्ह आढळत आहेत. मार्च महिन्याच्या 27 तारखेपासून मृत्यूचा आकडा 50 च्या वर पोहोचला आहे. एप्रिल महिन्याच्या पहिल्याच दिवशी 60 जणांचा मृत्यू झाला.

नागपुरात आता सरकारी आणि खाजगी रुग्णालयात किती बेड शिल्लक
एवढेच बेड शिल्लक असून त्यातही काही बेड राखीव ठेवावे लागतात. त्यामुळे अनेक रुग्णांना बेडच मिळत नसल्याचे चित्र आहे. त्यामुळे नागपुरात कोरोनामुळे जाणाऱ्या बळींची संख्या वाढत आहे.
करोनापासून बचाव करण्यासाठी अनेक प्रकारच्या लसी येण्याची शक्यता वाढत चालली असतानाचा नाकातून देता येणारी करोना लस लवकरच उपलब्ध होईल असे समजते आहे. हैद्राबादच्या भारत बायोटेक कंपनीला नाकावाटे देण्याच्या करोना लसीच्या पहिल्या टप्प्याच्या चाचण्या सुरु करण्याची परवानगी देण्यात आली आहे. ड्रग कंट्रोलर ऑफ इंडियाच्या विशेष समितीने अशी मंजुरी भारत बायोटेक ला दिली असून पहिल्या चाचण्यांचा अहवाल समिती तपासणार आहे आणि त्यानंतर पुढच्या टप्प्यातील चाचण्यांची परवानगी दिली जाणार आहे असे समजते.
देशातील चार राज्यात या चाचण्या घेतल्या जाणार आहेत. त्यात महाराष्ट्र, बिहार, तामिळनाडू आणि तेलंगाना राज्यांचा समावेश आहे. १८ ते ६० वयोगटातील १७५ लोकांवर या चाचण्या करण्यात येणार आहेत. त्यासाठी तीन गट केले जात आहेत. ७० -७० चे दोन आणि तिसरा गट ३५ लोकांचा असेल. पहिल्या गटाला एकच डोस दिला जाईल. दुसऱ्या गटाला डोस आणि प्लेसबोही दिला जाईल तर तिसऱ्या गटाला फक्त प्लेस्बो दिला जाणार आहे. त्यानंतर परीक्षण करून अहवाल तयार केला जाणार आहे. या लसीचा फायदा लहान मुलांना अधिक प्रमाणात होईल असे सांगितले जात आहे. सध्या लहान मुलांसाठी करोना लस उपलब्ध नाही. मात्र तरीही नाकातून देण्याच्या लसीच्या चाचण्या १८ वर्षांखालील मुलांवर करण्याची परवानगी दिली गेलेली नाही.
लोक ऐकत नाहीत मुंबईत पूर्णपणे लॉकडाउन करायला राजकीय पक्षांकडून विरोध होतोय. लॉकडाउनच्या विरोधात भूमिका घेणार असा स्पष्ट इशाराच काही राजकीय पक्षांनी दिलाय. पण उद्धव ठाकरे यांच्या नेतृत्वाखाली महाविकास आघाडी सरकार राज्यात पुन्हा एकदा लॉकडाउनच्याच दिशेने तयारी करत आहे, मुंबईच्या महापौर किशोरी पेडणेकर यांनी पत्रकार परिषदेत तसे संकेत दिले.
“मुंबईत ३१ मार्चपर्यंत १६,५६१ बेड उपलब्ध होते. त्यात १२,६२८ बेड भरले आहेत. आता ३,९३३ बेड उपलब्ध आहेत. आयसीयू बेडची संख्या १,६२७ होती. त्यातले १,३०३ बेड वापरात आहेत. फक्त ३२४ आयसीयू बेड रिकामे आहेत. मुत्यूची संख्या कमी असली, तरी धोका वाढतोय” असे महापौर किशोरी पेडणेकर यांनी सांगितले. “आयसीयूमध्ये असलेले, ऑक्सिजनवर अससलेले पेशंट आजही डेंजर झोनमध्ये आहेत. आधी झोपडपट्टीतून कोरोना रुग्ण वाढत होते. आता टॉवरमधुन रुग्ण संख्या वाढतेय” असे किशोरी पेडणेकर यांनी सांगितले.
“कोरोना रुग्णांची वाढती संख्या लक्षात घेता, आपण २५ हजार बेड क्षमतेची तयारी ठेवलीय” असं किशोरी पेडणेकर म्हणाल्या. पालिकेची तयारी फुकट गेली तरी चालेल, पण एकही रुग्ण बाधित होऊ नये असे त्या म्हणाल्या.
निर्बंध लागण्याची शक्यता त्यांनी बोलून दाखवली. हॉटेल्सना एकूण क्षमतेच्या ५० टक्के क्षमतेने परवानगी दिली जाईल, असे त्या म्हणाल्या. “लोक ऐकत नाहीत, त्यामुळे धार्मिक स्थळ पूर्णपणे बंद होतील, सर्वसामान्यांसाठी लोकल प्रवासही बंद होऊ शकतो. मागच्यावर्षी लॉकडाउनमध्ये अत्यावश्यक सेवेतील कर्मचाऱ्यांना लोकल प्रवासाची मुभा दिली होती, तसाच निर्णय आताही होऊ शकतो.” मॉल, थिएटरही बंद करणार असल्याचे त्यांनी सांगितले. सध्या राज्यात रात्रीची संचारबंदी सुरु आहे. त्यामुळे रात्री आठ नंतर सर्व काही बंद होते. लॉकडाउन करु नका, अशी समाजातील सर्व थरातून मागणी होत आहे. कारण लॉकडाउनमुळे लोक आधीच बरोजगार झाले आहेत. त्यात नवीन लॉकडाउन राज्याला परवडणारा नाही.

कोल्हापूरच्या रंकाळा परिसरात राहणारे सत्यजित संजय यादव आणि मारशा नदीम मुजावर यांनी विवाह केला आहे. मुलगा हिंदू तर मुलगी मुस्लीम धर्माची आहे. दोघेही उच्चशिक्षित त्यामुळं आणि पुरोगामी विचारांचे आहेत. लहानपणापासूनच एकमेकांचे मित्र आणि पुढे आयुष्यभरासाठीचे जोडीदार झालेत.दोघांनी लग्नाचा निर्णय घेतला.कुटुंबांची परवानगी मिळावली आणि शाहू नगरीत धुमधडाक्यात लग्नाचा बार उडाला. एकाच मंडपात मंगलाष्टका आणि त्याच मंडपात निकाह कबुल झाला. गेल्या 10 ते 12 वर्षांपासून एकमेकाला ओळखत असल्यानं कधीही धर्माचा अडसर आला नाही किंवा सामाजिक दबावाचा विचार कधी मनात आला नाही, असं सत्यजित यादव सांगतोय.
सत्यजित हा सिव्हिल इंजिनिअर आहे तर मारशा नदीम मुजावर ही आर्किटेक्ट आहे. 19 मार्चला एका हॉटेलमध्ये मौलानांच्या उपस्थिती मुस्लीम पद्धतीनं निकाह झाला. तर त्याच वेळी हिंदू पद्धतीने अक्षता, सप्तपदी विधी झाले. दोघांचेही कुटुंब पुरोगामी विचारांचे असल्यानं सामाजिक दबावाचा कुठलाच प्रकार घडला नाही. सुरुवातीला घरचे परवानगी देतील की नाही अशी भीती होती मात्र दोघांच्याही कुटुंबियांनी याला संमती दिली. दोन्ही कुटुंबातील मैत्रीचे संबंध आता नात्यात बदलले आहेत. आम्ही दोघे लहानपणापासून एकत्र वाढलो आहे. मात्र घरातील वडिलधाऱ्यांच्या परवानगीनेच लग्न करण्याचं ठरवलं होतं.
परवानगी मिळाली नाही तर पळून जाऊन लग्न करणार किंवा इतर विचार डोक्यात आले नाहीत. कारण आम्हाला खात्री होती की घरातील सर्व मंडळी आमच्या निर्णयाचं स्वागतच करतील, असे मारशा मुजावर म्हणाली. मुजावर कुटुंबीय ईदबरोबर दिवाळी, पाडवा आदी सण साजरे करतात. शाहू महाराजांच्या विचारांचा पगडा असल्याचं ते सांगतात तर यादव कुटुंबीय देखील उच्च शिक्षित असून कोणाताही धर्मभेद त्यांच्या कुटुंबीयांमध्ये मानला जात नाही. त्यामुळं शाहू महाराजांच्या विचारांचा वारसा पुढे नेणाऱ्या या दोन्ही कुटुंबियांवर कौतुकाचा वर्षाव होत आहे
मारशाचे आजोबा अस्लम मुजावर 1968 साली कोल्हापूर पालिकेत नगरसेवक होते. कुष्ठरुग्णांना शेंडापार्क येथे सुविधा मिळवून देण्यासाठी केलेल्या चिपको आंदोलनाची राज्यभर चर्चा झाली होती. माणुसकी हाच धर्म आम्ही मानतो. सर्व जाती धर्मांच्या लोकांचा आदर करण्याची शिकवण आम्हाला वडीलधाऱ्यांनी दिली आहे. त्यामुळं आम्ही केवळ मानवता हा एकच धर्म मानतो अशी प्रतिक्रिया मुलीचे वडील नदीम मुजावर यांनी दिली आहे.
South Indian superstar Nagarjuna will wage a war on terror in his latest action thriller ‘Wild Dog’, releasing in UAE cinemas on April 2.
In the movie directed by Ahishor Solomon, Nagarjuna will play the fictional head of India’s counter-terrorism task force National Investigation Agency (NIA), which is trying to find the people behind the twin blasts in Hyderabad in 2013. The film is based on real events and will re-create the anti-terror squad’s investigations leading up to the arrest of the criminals responsible for the Dilsukhnagar explosions that killed dozens and injured many others.
The explosions were carried out 10 minutes apart and brought the city to a standstill. But the NIA famously swung into action and traced the terrorists — five members of the Indian Mujahideen, including the group’s co-founder Yasin Bhatkal. It was a significant milestone as it was one of the rare times that members of an extremist group were convicted and sentenced by an Indian court. But the movie isn’t about the devastation of the attack, claims the lead actor.
“Fortunately, we didn’t get into showing the carnage following a terrorist blast. We don’t see dead bodies lying around or limbs severed. Our film begins after four or five days after the blasts. The NIA is on call to trace the clues that led to the blasts. But it brought back memories. I am from Hyderabad and I remember the twin blasts. It shook the whole city up.
“So many people died during that time and it was a traumatic and stressful time. The movie brought back those unpleasant memories. But this movie will not evoke unpleasant memories because we wanted to be sensitive and didn’t want to disturb viewers,” said Nagarjuna in an exclusive interview over Zoom.
The seasoned actor, who is one of South India’s long-enduring matinee idols, believes that his latest film will evoke a sense of nationalistic pride.
Nagarjuna “This movie is more about how the NIA conducts such investigations and their service to their own country. This movie will stoke a sense of pride in your own nation in an uplifting way, without being jingoistic. If you have seen the original ‘24’, it’s like watching one of those episodes and fills you with an adrenalin rush,” said Nagarjuna.
‘Wild Dog’ is based on NIA in India and their activities during the twin blasts that happened in Hyderabad. Remember the twin blasts in Hyderabad and that German Bakery Blast. We took it from there. But it’s not about the blasts per se, but it’s about the investigations after that blast and how they apprehended the outfit leader and brought him back to India.
The Udta Punjab actress took to her Instagram story to reveal that she has tested positive for the novel coronavirus. She also informed that she is currently under home quarantine and is following all the safety protocols under the advice of her doctors.
She posted a note late Thursday which said, “Hello all, I have tested positive for Covid-19. I have immediately isolated myself and will be under home quarantine. I am following all safety protocols under the advice of my doctors. Grateful for all your love and support. Please stay safe and take care.”
Recently, her boyfriend and Brahmastra co-star Ranbir Kapoor had also tested positive for coronavirus. He has now tested negative for the virus and has fully recovered.
Alia Bhatt currently has several releases lined up. First up, is Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Gangubai Kathiawadi in which she will be seen in the titular role of a brothel owner. The film will release on July 30 and is set to clash with Prabhas’ Radhe Shyam.
She also has Ayan Mukerji’s Brahmastra in the pipeline. Featuring Ranbir, Alia, Amitabh Bachchan, Nagarjuna, and Mouni Roy, the film is the first in Ayan’s ambitious fantasy trilogy. The release of the movie has been postponed a few times due to heavy VFX work involved in the post-production stage.
Alia Bhatt is also set to be seen in SS Rajamouli’s epic, RRR. The period drama features Alia in a supporting role alongside south stars NTR Jr and Ram Charan.
Alia Bhatt will also star in Karan Johar’s big-budget historical drama Takht. Based on the Mughal era, the film will focus on the story of two brothers, Darashikoh and Aurangzeb. Ranveer Singh, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Vicky Kaushal, Bhumi Pednekar, Janhvi Kapoor, and Anil Kapoor are also set to star alongside Alia in the movie. The movie was announced in 2018 but is yet to go on floors.
Gold Rates fall of Rs 25 was observed in the rates of per gram 22-carat gold which stood at Rs 4,337 on Thursday, April 1, compared to Rs 4,362 from the previous day. According to Good Returns, the price of 10 grams of 22-carat-gold declined by Rs 250 to stand at Rs 43,370 from the earlier rate of Rs 43,620. Similar to the rates of 22-carat yellow metal, a fall of Rs 250 was witnessed in the prices of 10 grams of 24-carat gold which stood at Rs 44,370 compared to the previous day rate of Rs 44,620. Silver prices too declined marginally by Rs 0.70 per gram on Thursday.

Delhi: In the national capital, the cost of 22-carat gold stood at Rs 43,250 for 10 grams. While for 24-carat gold the buyer will have to pay around Rs 4,000 more that is Rs 47,180.
Chennai: Rs 41,740 per 10 grams is the rate for 22-carat gold in Chennai while for 24-carat gold of the same quantity the price is Rs 45,540.
Kolkata: Rs 43,680 is the rate for 10 grams of 22-carat gold in Kolkata while for 24-carat the price is Rs 46,400 per 10 grams.
Mumbai: For 10 grams of 22-carat yellow metal in Mumbai the price is Rs 43,370, while for 10 grams of 24-carat gold the purchaser will have to pay Rs 1000 more that is Rs 44,370.
International Price of Gold
In the international market, gold prices witnessed an increase of 0.28 percent to stand at USD 1,713.50 per ounce on Thursday. However, in the last 30 days, the performance of the yellow metal has declined by 0.66 percent which is equivalent to USD 11.30.
Silver Prices
On Thursday, silver rates too went through a nominal fall as for 10 grams of the metal the rate decreased by Rs 7 to Rs 632 from Rs 639 on the previous day.
Silver Rates in Metro Cities
The buyers will have to pay different amounts to buy silver in different cities of the country as the rates keep on changing. In Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata one will have to pay Rs 63,200 for one kilogram of silver while they will have to pay Rs 67,300 in Chennai and Hyderabad for the same quantity of the metal.
India’s diesel and petrol consumption posted a whopping growth of more than 27% in March from a year ago when a countrywide lockdown had washed out fuel demand by 70%.
But a more realistic comparison with March 2019 shows demand for diesel, a bellwether for economic activities, still falling short by nearly 5%. But petrol sales showed a growth of 5% as people’s preference for personal vehicles to get around continued.
India’s Market data for March shows diesel sales of state-run retailers, which dominate 90% of the market, at 128% of a year-ago period, and petrol sales at 127%.
India’s Diesel consumption had posted a year-on-year growth of over 7% and petrol 5% in the first fortnight of March, clearly indicating a recovery in demand to the pre-pandemic level. A comparison of the full month’s data with March 2019 bears this out.
Jet fuel sales also posted handsome gains, trailing a march 2020 level by just a little over 4%. A comparison with March 2019, sales are still 35.6% lower. But even this can be considered as a positive sign as sales were down more than 36% from a year ago in February.
Demand for LPG, or household cooking gas, edged 1.3% in March from a year ago, while showing only marginal growth over the same month of 2019. LPG demand had posted sustained growth through the lockdown period as families remained confined within their homes, leading to more cooking.
The fall in LPG consumption can be explained by the sharp increase in price since December totalling Rs 175 per cylinder. The state-run retailers cut the price by Rs 10 per cylinder Wednesday, the first reduction in four months.

Nagpur: A 37-year old man was killed as the Activa moped he was riding was hit by a tipper truck in the Nagpur, Lakadganj police area on Wednesday night. The driver of the truck reportedly fled fearing an angry reaction from the public.
The deceased, Ashay Pramod Shah, resident of Dipti Signal, Amar Sankul Apartment, Flat No. 308, was going on his Activa moped (MH-49/M 7394) around 9.20 pm on Wednesday, Midway near Danaganj Square, Old Bhandara Road, a rashly driven tipper truck (MH-36/F 3075) hit Ashay’s moped forcefully. He suffered fatal injuries and died on the spot. The driver of the truck fled the spot fearing public backlash.
Nagpur Lakadganj PSI Dongre, based on a complaint lodged by Ankit Pramod Shah (34), booked the unidentified driver under Sections 279, 304(A) of the IPC read with Sections 134, 187 of Motor Vehicles Act and searching for him.
Even as the number of Covid-19 cases is on a steep rise in Maharashtra, no change has been decided yet in the state board exam schedule for classes 10 and 12.

Education Minister Varsha Gaikwad has said that the state has made an elaborate plan for offline exams and had provided alternatives to state board students (SSC and HSC) affected by the Covid situation to appear for special and supplementary exams as well.
“In case of Covid infection to students or family members, or the exams centre or residence falling into the Containment Zone, additional time of 15 days will be provided for submission of special assignments and Practical exams. Special exams and Supplementary exams will also be arranged in this situation,” Gaikwad said.
Supplementary exams will be arranged in the month of July-August.
Maharashtra board exam dates
Written exams for class 10 will be held between April 29 to May 20. Written exams for class 12 will be held between April 23 to May 21. Both exams will be conducted offline.
Covid-19 precautions for board exams
Prevailing state guidelines will have to be strictly followed at exam centres. The state government is planning to vaccinate staff assigned duties for the board exams.
If any student or a family member tests positive, or the house or exam centre falls in containment a zone, they can appear for the special or supplementary exams.
Students will be allotted exam centres in their respective schools and junior colleges. In case there is a shortage of classrooms, arrangements will be made in nearby schools or junior colleges.
In addition 30 minutes in exams
Every year, students are provided 3 hours for an exam of 80 marks. But since students have been out of writing practice, an additional 30 minutes will be provided. For exams of 40 or 50 marks, an additional time of 15 minutes will be provided.
Students will special abilities (Divyang) will be provided with another additional 20 mins.
Special assignments
For class 10 board exam students, instead of practical exams, there will a special assignment of 20 marks that will be done as a home assignment. These assignments will be submitted to the respective schools between May 21 and June 10.
The class 12 board practical exams will take place after the written exams between May 22 and June 10. The number of Practical will also be brought down to 5/6.
The state government however has no direct control over the CBSE and ICSE exams. However, the guidelines issued regarding Covid-19 protection will have to be adhered to. There are around 118 ICSE and 643 CBSE affiliated schools across Maharashtra.
Rajinikanth Five days ahead of the Tamil Nadu poll, the Narendra Modi government on Thursday announced the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for Rajinikanth for his contributions as an actor, producer, and screenwriter.
Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar made the announcement at his Delhi residence.
Rajinikanth “Happy to announce #Dadasaheb Phalke award for 2019 to one of the greatest actors in the history of Indian cinema Rajnikant Ji. His contribution as actor, producer, and screenwriter has been iconic,” Mr. Javadekar later tweeted.
Instituted in 1969, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award is India’s highest award in cinema. It is presented annually at the National Film Awards Ceremony by the Directorate of Film Festivals, an organization of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
The award was decided by a jury consisting of singer Asha Bhonsle, director Subhash Ghai, actor Mohanlal, singer Shankar Mahadevan and actor Biswajeet Chatterjee.
The last person to receive the award was Amitabh Bachchan in 2018. For the last three years, there had been no nominee.
Three years after taking the first step towards politics, Rajinikanth recently announced that he will not be taking the plunge, citing failing health as a reason for not forming a new political party and contesting the upcoming Assembly election.
Rajinikanth made his debut in K. Balachander’s 1975 Tamil film Apoorva Raagangal and has since gone on to feature in numerous blockbusters such as Baashha, Padayappa, and Endhiran among others. His next film Annaatthe is scheduled to release this Diwali 2021 in theatres.
NAGPUR: After 37 days, the city will have no restrictions on any activities, excluding social, cultural, political, and religious gatherings, from Thursday. Only night curfew imposed by the state government will be imposed in the city and adjoining towns.
With orders of restrictions lapsing on midnight of Wednesday, guardian minister Nitin Raut held a meeting with officials in the afternoon. “All restrictions imposed by us in the district will stop from April 1. Restrictions or decisions are taken by the state only will be implemented here.
I thank all Nagpur people of the district for supporting restrictions imposed here to contain the spread of the disease,” Raut said.

नागपूर : महापालिकेच्या लक्ष्मीनगर, हनुमाननगर व मंगळवारी झोनमध्ये सर्वाधिक पॉझिटिव्ह रुग्ण आहेत. या भागातील हॉटस्पॉटची माहिती लपविली जात आहे. या परिसरातील नागरिकांचा मुक्त संचार सुरू आहे. यामुळे बाधितांची संख्या वाढण्याचा गंभीर धोका निर्माण झाला आहे. मनपाने हॉटस्पॉट परिसराची माहिती दररोज जाहीर केल्यास त्या त्या परिसरातील नागरिकांना सतर्कता बाळगता येईल. काही प्रमाणात संक्रमण टाळता येईल. परंतु अशा प्रयत्नावर पाणी फेरण्याचा प्रकार सुरू आहे.
कोरोना नियंत्रणाची जबाबदारी असलेल्या अधिकाऱ्यांकडून नियोजनपूर्वक कामे होत नसल्याचे चित्र आहे. मनपा मुख्यालयात दररोज बैठका होत आहेत. परंतु शहरातील हॉटस्पॉट कसे कमी करता येईल, कोणत्या उपाययोजना करणे आवश्यक आहे, यावर चर्चा होताना दिसत नाही. ज्या भागात सर्वाधिक रुग्ण आहेत अशा भागात हॉटस्पॉट जाहीर करून नागरिकांना वेळीच सावध करण्याची गरज आहे.
मनुष्यबळाचा अभाव, खर्चाची बचत हॉटस्पॉट जाहीर केल्यास संबंधित क्षेत्र प्रतिबंधित जाहीर करावे लागते. त्यासाठी टिन, लाकडी साहित्य यावर खर्च करावा लागतो. तसेच पोलीस बंदोबस्त लावावा लागतो. यामुळे हॉटस्पॉट जाहीर करण्याचे टाळले जात असल्याची मनपात चर्चा आहे.
कोरोना वॉर रुम कशासाठी? कोरोनाची लक्षणे असल्यास कोणती खबरदारी घ्यावी, बाधितांना भरती व्हायचे असल्यास कोणत्या हॉस्पिटलमध्ये बेड खाली आहे, याची माहिती मनपाच्या कोरोना वॉर रुममधून मिळणे अपेक्षित आहे. परंतु खाली बेडची माहिती मिळत नसल्याच्या नागरिकांच्या तक्रारी आहेत.
पिंपरी : गुटखा वाहतूक प्रकरणी पोलीस कोठडीत असलेल्या आरोपीने धूम ठोकली आहे. पोलीस चौकीत पोलिसाला धक्का देऊन खिडकीतून उडी मारून त्याने पलायन केले आहे. शिरगाव येथे बुधवारी (दि. ३१) रात्री पावणेनऊच्या सुमारास हा प्रकार घडला. आरोपीला पोलिसांनी पकडले.
करम हौशीयतअली शेख (वय २९, रा. भिवंडी, ठाणे), असे पळून गेलेल्या आरोपीचे नाव आहे. पोलीस उपनिरीक्षक संदीप गाडीलकर यांनी या प्रकरणी तळेगाव दाभाडे पोलिस ठाण्यात फिर्याद दिली आहे. पोलिसांनी दिलेल्या माहितीनुसार, आरोपी शेख हा मुंबई येथून हडपसर येथे गुटखा घेऊन जाणार असल्याची माहिती मिळाली. त्यानुसार पिंपरी-चिंचवड पोलिसांच्या सामाजिक सुरक्षा पथकाने मंगळवारी (दि ३०) सापळा रचला. मुंबई -पुणे द्रुतगती मार्गाच्या सोमाटणे फाटा येथील सब -वेवर आरोपी शेखला सामाजिक सुरक्षा पथकाने पकडले. त्याच्याकडून १२ लाख ३० हजार ५६० रुपये किमतीचा गुटखा, तीन हजार ३०० रुपये रोख, ५०० रुपये किमतीचा मोबाईल फोन, आठ लाख २० हजार रुपये किमतीचे चारचाकी वाहन, असा एकूण २० लाख ५४ हजार ३६० रुपये किंमतीचा मुद्देमाल पोलिसांनी जप्त केला. याप्रकरणी तळेगाव दाभाडे पोलीस ठाण्यात गुन्हा दाखल करून आरोपी शेख याला अटक करण्यात आली. त्याला बुधवारी वडगाव मावळ येथील न्यायालयात हजर केले. न्यायालयाने त्याला तीन दिवसांची पोलिस कोठडी सुनावली.
पोलीस कोठडीत असल्याने शिरगाव पोलिसांनी गुन्ह्याच्या तपासासाठी आरोपी शेख याला शिरगाव पोलीस चौकीत आणले. त्यावेळी रात्री पावणे नऊच्या सुमारास आरोपी शेख पळून जाऊ लागला. त्यावेळी फिर्यादी पोलीस उपनिरीक्षक गाडीलकर यांनी त्याला पकडण्याचा प्रयत्न केला. मात्र त्यांना धक्का देऊन पोलीस चौकीच्या मागच्या खिडकीतून उडी मारून आरोपी शेख पळून गेला. धामणी गावाच्या रस्त्याने आरोपी शेख रात्रीच्या अंधाराचा फायदा घेऊन पळून गेला. पोलिसांनी त्याचा शोध घेतला मात्र तो मिळून आला नाही.

Home Minister Anil Deshmukh and Leader of Opposition Devendra Fadnavis via video link besides, District Collector Ravindra Thakre, Nagpur Municipal Chief, Radhakrishnan B, Nagpur Police Commissioner, Amitesh Kumar, and others were prominently present on this occasion.
Now only night curfew will be implemented between 8 pm and 7 am in the city, besides every other restriction has been lifted from the district starting from April 1.

Coronavirus India Updates: India reported over 72,000 Covid-19 cases in the 24 hours ending 9 am on Thursday. Of the 72,330 new infections, 39,544 were from Maharashtra. Chhattisgarh recorded its highest ever count, with 4,563 cases. Karnataka also reported over 4,000 cases.
Meanwhile, 459 deaths were reported from across the country, the highest since December 5, 2020. Apart from Maharashtra, which reported 243 deaths, Punjab (55), Chhattisgarh (39), Karnataka (26), and Tamil Nadu (19) were the other big contributors. At least 14 states reported zero deaths on Wednesday.
The third phase of India’s Covid-19 vaccination drive begins Thursday, with everyone above the age of 45 eligible for the shot. It will cover the population which is at the highest risk — 90 percent of deaths related to the disease in India have been in the category of those above the age of 45. The Centre has instructed states to ensure all districts with high caseloads achieve 100 percent vaccination coverage in the next two weeks.

नागपूर: नृत्य शिक्षकाने तणाव दूर करण्याच्या बहाण्याने दारू पाजून २२ वर्षीय विद्यार्थिनीवर अत्याचार केला. ही खळबळजनक घटना अजनी भागात उघडकीस आली. अजनी पोलिसांनी अत्याचारासह विविध कलमान्वये गुन्हा दाखल करून शिक्षकाला अटक केली आहे. रोमियो गजानन गोडबोले (वय २५), असे अटकेतील नृत्य शिक्षकाचे नाव आहे.
पीडित विद्यार्थिनी मूळ वर्धा येथील रहिवासी असून, तिचे अभियांत्रिकीचे शिक्षण पूर्ण झाले आहे. सध्या ती स्पर्धा परीक्षेची तयारी करीत आहे. काही दिवसांपूर्वी तिची इन्स्टाग्रामवर गोडबोले याच्यासोबत ओळख झाली. स्पर्धा परीक्षेच्या अभ्यासामुळे ती तणावात होती. गोडबोले याने तिला तणावमुक्त करण्याचे आश्वासन दिले. धुळवडीला तो तरुणीच्या फ्लॅटमध्ये गेला. तिला दारू पाजली. तरुणीने दारू प्यायली.
ती मद्यधुंद अवस्थेत असताना गोडबोले याने तिच्यावर अत्याचार केला. मोबाइलमध्ये तिचे अश्लील छायाचित्र काढले. काही वेळाने तरुणी शुद्धीवर आली. अत्याचार केल्याने तिने गोडबोले याला जाब विचारला. त्याने छायाचित्र व्हायरल करण्याची धमकी दिली. तरुणीने नागपुरातील एका नातेवाइकाला घटनेची माहिती दिली. नातेवाइकासोबत तरुणीने अजनी पोलिस स्टेशन गाठून तक्रार दिली. पोलिसांनी अत्याचार, अनुसूचित जाती जमाती प्रतिबंधक कायद्यान्वये गुन्हा दाखल करून गोडबोले याला अटक केली आहे.
नागपूर: धुळवडीला कोणतीही अनुचित घटना घडू नये, यासाठी संपूर्ण शहरात पोलिस बंदोबस्त असतानाच मोक्षधाम घाट परिसरातील सुलभ शौचालयाजवळ गुन्हेगाराची तलवारीने वार करून हत्या करण्यात आली. ही थरारक घटना सोमवारी सायंकाळी ६ वाजताच्या सुमारास घडली. लखन पप्पू गायकवाड (वय ३२, रा. तकिया धंतोली), असे मृताचे नाव आहे. याप्रकरणी गणेशपेठ पोलिसांनी खुनाचा गुन्हा दाखल करून दोन मारेकऱ्यांना अटक केली आहे. चेतन ऊर्फ बाबा मंडल (वय ३०, रा. हिवरीनगर) व तन्मय ऊर्फ भद्या नगराळे (वय ३०, रा. कौशल्यानगर), अशी अटकेतील मारेकऱ्यांची नावे आहेत. या घटनेने धुळवडीला गालबोट लागले. लखन याच्याविरुद्ध प्राणघातक हल्ल्यासह चार गुन्हे दाखल आहेत. चेतन याच्याविरुद्धही गंभीर गुन्हे दाखल आहेत.
चेतन याचा चहाचा ठेला आहे तर तन्मय हा चालक आहे. काही दिवसांपूर्वी तन्मय व लखन यांच्यात वाद झाला. लखन याने त्याला ठार मारण्याची धमकी दिली. लखन ठार मारेल, अशी भीती तन्मय याला वाटायला लागली. तन्मय याने चेतन याच्या मदतीने लखन याचा काटा काढण्याची योजना आखली. सोमवारी सायंकाळी दोघेही दारू घेऊन मोक्षधाम घाटजवळील सुलभ शौचालयाजवळ गेले. तेथे त्यांनी लखन याला दारू पाजली. त्यानंतर दोघांनी तलवारीने वार करून लखन याची हत्या केली व पसार झाले. घटनेची माहिती मिळताच गणेशपेठ पोलिसांचा ताफा तेथे पोहोचला. पंचनामा करून पोलिसांनी मृतदेह मेयो हॉस्पिटलकडे रवाना केला. पोलिसांनी खुनाचा गुन्हा दाखल करून मारेकऱ्यांचा शोध सुरू केला. मंगळवारी दुपारी तन्मय व चेतनला अटक केली.
Nagpur: Top police brass was left red-faced again as yet another cop was found enjoying liquor on duty at the office of Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), MIDC Division.
The Naik Police Constable (NPC) Manoj Thakur, posted at the ACP’s office, was placed under suspension and an inquiry has been ordered by the Commissioner of Police Amitesh Kumar after a video showing the cop allegedly consuming liquor at his workplace went viral.
Recently, three cops at the office of ACP, Lakadganj Division, were suspended by Zonal DCP Lohit Matani after a video of the trio consuming liquor on duty had gone viral on social media. While the first video of the three cops was filmed on March 10, the latest clip was shot with a mobile phone on March 2, sources said.
In the latest clip, which is around 1.13 minutes long, Thakur is seen speaking on phone with someone whom he had been advising how to convince the ACP. Later, a discussion of more ‘pegs’ and ‘four-five bumper getting over’ also can be heard in the clip. The other person speaking to Thakur is also heard asking him to reveal about some places or persons whom he can round up.
The Commissioner of Police Kumar said the latest incident looks like an aberration and strict action would be initiated. The concerned cop has been put under suspension and inquiry has been ordered. The issue (misuse of office premises) has already been taken up and no leniency would be shown in such cases of unacceptable behaviour, he said.
Police sources said a civilian, working with the ACP of MIDC Division, was unhappy as Thakur had been “detaining” him even after working hours so that he can enjoy a feast. Sources further said that the NPC had been regularly drinking and having snacks at the office. Last week, three cops from a police station too had come inside the office and were shocked to see the party going on, said the source.
Banks are likely to decline auto payments from April 1 as all recurring transactions using cards and prepaid payment instruments will now require an additional factor of authentication, as per an RBI circular first issued in December 2020. Transactions above ₹ 5,000 will require an additional one-time password. A notification will be sent to customers five days before an automatic payment is scheduled and the transaction will go ahead only if approved by the user. If banks decline automatic payments, the users will have to make manual transactions to complete their bill payments.
People use recurring mandates on debit/credit cards to pay for bills and subscription services such as OTT streaming, media, utility and postpaid services. Rejection of payment is likely to cause a huge disruption, with estimates suggesting that transactions worth about ₹ 2,000 crore could fail from April 1. UPI transactions will, however, remain unaffected by the new rule.
Third-party payment processors have also declined to share customer information with banks due to contractual agreements and this has further aggravated the problem.
The central bank has refused to extend the deadline, but the matter is expected to be resolved in the coming weeks.
In auto pay transactions, money is automatically transferred on a scheduled date towards payment of recurring bills such as credit cards and utility bills.

NEW DELHI: Top Banks customers, including SBI, HDFC, and ICICI, must take note that you may face OTP issues from April 1 as your banks failed to comply with regulations issued by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). The OTP issue is also challenging as banks will be closed for public transactions till April 4. These days the OTP verification has become essential to make payments and carry out any function. This issue pertaining to OTP, therefore, is likely to cause many inconveniences to customers in general.
Bank OTP Not Coming? Here Is Why
To make a payment or any bank-related operations, banks send One Time Password (OTP) to the registered mobile number or email id or on both. Customers need to enter the exact details in order to proceed further.
However, TRAI started getting complaints regarding excessive and unwanted messages being sent to customer’s numbers.
Subsequently, TRAI took cognisance of the issue and issued Telecom Commercial Communications Customer Preference Regulations, 2018 (“TCCCPR, 2018”) on July 19, 2018, to curb the menace of Unsolicited Commercial Communications (UCC).
Since then, TRAI started communicating with the Principal Entities or senders of these messages through Telecom Service Providers (TSP) to fulfill the regulatory requirements.
Telecom Service Providers have made repeated communications to principal entities including major banks and telemarketers sending bulk SMSs who have failed to fulfill regulatory requirements and requested them to comply with the provisions of the regulations, TRAI stated.
TRAI then learned that Principal Entities including major banks like State Bank of India, HDFC Bank, Punjab National Bank, Axis bank, etc. were not adhering to mandatory norms.
TRAI has directed Principal Entities including banks, telemarketers to fulfill the regulatory requirements before March 31, 2021, to avoid any disruption in the communication with the customers from April 1, 2021.
If banks fail to comply by today, customers will face the OTP-related issue from April 1 onward.

Maharashtra lockdown The state government is likely to decide on shutting down restaurants, hotels, theatres and reducing business house hours in a meeting slated to be chaired by chief minister Uddhav Thackeray this weekend.
Amid opposition from ally Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) over Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray’s plan of a statewide shutdown to curb the surge in Covid cases, state officials on Tuesday ruled out a blanket lockdown but assured stricter curbs in a phased manner from next week.
The state of Maharashtra government is likely to decide on shutting down restaurants, hotels, theatres and reducing business house hours in a meeting slated to be chaired by Thackeray this weekend, the officials added. “Though it would not be a blanket lockdown, we are using the term to have a psychological impact on the minds of the people. We are now in favour of shutting down interstate or interdistrict travel or bringing down the industrial commercial activities to a halt,” an official from Mantralaya said on condition of anonymity.
“But at the same time, the crowd and gatherings at public places need to be brought down considerably. For this, the operation of market places, shops and establishments need to be curbed. It is necessary to see that private and public offices operate at minimum possible capacity so that crowding in trains and buses is reduced,” the official added. The state on Tuesday reported 27,918 fresh cases, two days after recording the highest 40,414 infections in a day, taking the tally to 2,773,436, the health department announced. With 139 patients succumbing to the infection, the toll in the state mounted to 54,422, it added.
In Maharashtra view of the rising cases, Thackeray had directed officials to start preparing for another lockdown as citizens failed to follow Covid protocols. State minister and NCP leader Nawab Malik, however, said the state “cannot afford any lockdown” and had asked the chief minister to consider other options.
Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope also hinted at stricter curbs rather than a complete lockdown. “We will impose stricter restrictions first before a complete lockdown. Nobody wants the lockdown but it would be the last resort if the number of new patients exceeds the number of beds available in hospitals and Covid care centres. Before that, we are checking if restaurants and theatres need to be completely shut as crowding in these areas is more,” he said.
Authorities at the state and city levels are reportedly lagging to track and test people arriving from other areas mainly due to shortage of manpower and non-cooperation from citizens.

Actor and former Bigg Boss contestant Ajaz Khan was arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) today, a day after he was detained for questioning over restricted drugs found at his Mumbai home. He was taken into custody yesterday from the Mumbai airport upon his arrival from Rajasthan. The agency said it had found alprazolam tablets from his residence during searches in the city’s Andheri and Lokhandwala areas.
Aijaz Khan is part of narcotics peddler Shadab Farooque Shaikh alias Shadab Batata’s syndicate, the NCB has said. Shaikh was arrested last Thursday and over 2 kilograms of the banned mephedrone drug were recovered from him.
Revelations made by Mr Batata led the agency to Mr Khan who was questioned in the NCB’s Mumbai office. Speaking to reporters outside the office, Mr Khan had claimed he was not detained but had gone to meet the officers voluntarily. This morning, he insisted on his innocence.
“Neither was anything found from my home nor from the airport,” Mr. Khan said today while talking to reporters while being taken away by officials. When asked repeatedly about the drugs found at his residence, he said, “Nothing. Ask them where they got it…what they got was four sleeping pills. My wife had miscarried and was in depression. She was taking those pills.”
The NCB has in recent months tightened the screws on the alleged Bollywood-narcotics syndicate with searches, interrogations, and arrests being made in this connection. The investigations are linked to actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s death last year.
A number of industry A-listers, including Deepika Padukone, Arjun Rampal, Shraddha Kapoor, and Sara Ali Khan have been questioned by the NCB during this phase.
The agency has also arrested a number of foreign nationals in recent days for possession of illegal drugs. For instance, on Monday it intercepted a Nigerian national and recovered 200 grams of Mephedrone from the Navi Mumbai area, ANI reported. On the same day, in Chennai, it took custody of six Sri Lankan nationals intercepted on a boat in Indian waters with 300 kilograms of heroin and a huge quantity of arms and ammunition, according to ANI.

Nagpur: Two COVID-19 patients allegedly died by suicide in a little over 12 hours in Nagpur in Maharashtra, police said on Tuesday.
An 81-year-old Covid patient allegedly hanged himself using an oxygen pipe at the government hospital in Nagpur on Monday. Purushottam Gajbhiye, admitted in the COVID-19 ward of the Government Medical College and Hospital, was found dead in a bathroom by a hospital worker.
The reasons for his step were not clear, said Vinod Chaudhury, a police inspector.

“He and three of his family members had tested positive for the virus on March 26. He was also suffering from kidney stone. The senior citizen hanged himself at 6:30 am,” Mr. Chaudhary added.
