Nagpur: Imagine being able to talk to your doctors during brain surgery without pain and give them immediate feedback if you feel any problem while they operate. That’s exactly what happens during an awake craniotomy or awake brain surgery. This high-end case was recently performed at Wockhardt Hospital, Nagpur.
This highly specialized surgical procedure requires a team approach led by a neurosurgeon and a neuro anesthesiologist which was performed by Dr. Rahul Zamad, Neuro Surgeon, and Dr. Awantika Jaiswal, Neuro anesthesiologist.
“The main goal in such surgery is to remove as much of the tumor as can be removed, in the safest possible way. When a tumor is near an area of the brain that controls critical functions — such as speech, language, or movement — an awake craniotomy is the best way to identify and safely preserve those abilities”, informed Dr. Rahul Zamad.
Certain functions are generally located in particular areas on the brain’s surface. But below the surface, bundles of nerves pass through the brain to the spinal cord and throughout the body. During the surgery, we have to map these nerves using brain mapping gadgets to understand which ones are connected to key functions so that we can avoid them as we remove the tumor. Damaging critical nerves could cause permanent disability.
Awake craniotomies are frequently — but not always — used for various brain tumors which tend to occur in the frontal, parietal and temporal lobes, which control speech and motor function, and also for certain seizure disorders.
The most important player of the procedure is the patient as he has to feel comfortable with the idea of waking up during surgery. A patient with severe symptoms may not be able to effectively contribute to the neurological exams during surgery.
Brain tissue doesn’t have any pain fibers, so while you may feel pressure or vibrations from the surgery, you shouldn’t feel pain. We use a combination of local anesthetic and a small amount of sedation if required to numb the muscles, skin, and bone that the surgeon has to cut through to get to the brain. The patient is then completely awake while the resection of the tumor is started.
When the patient wakes up he will hear the neuro anesthesiologist reassuring the patient and though he won’t be able to move the head, the neuro anesthesiology team will make them as comfortable as possible and stay with the patient the entire time as it may require something from a few minutes to several hours to complete the procedure.
While being awake patient helps to map the areas of the brain by letting the team know about weakness in limbs or difficulty in speech. In our case, the area of interest was the motor and the premotor cortex. The neurosurgeon stimulates the part of your brain near the tumor by sending a light electrical current down the nerves. At the same time, the neuro anesthesiologist will give you some simple verbal tasks to see if the stimulation affected your neurological function, and the rest of the time also active communication continues.
Finally, when intracranial work is done and the patient’s condition is stable, the patient is again sedated and the rest of the procedure is completed.
New Delhi: August 2021: Indian Oil to invest over 1 lakh cr: The Indian fuel demand is projected to reach 400-450 million tonnes by 2040 from the current 250 million tonnes in the forecasts of various agencies. To meet this increased demand, IndianOil will take up new projects every year through which 25 million tonnes including CPCL Metric Tonnes Per Annum (MMTPA) refining capacity will be expanded. An investment of about one lakh crore rupees is expected in the next 4-5 years on these expansion plans of refining capacity.
In the AGM held at New Delhi, IndianOil Chairman Mr. Shrikant Madhav Vaidya declared a record profit of Rs 21,836 crore for the FY 2020-21. The gross refining margin (GRM) during the year rose to US$ 5.64 per barrel (bbl) as compared to US$ 0.08 per bbl in the previous financial year. For the first quarter of this fiscal, IndianOil achieved a refinery run of 88.6% as compared to 68.5% in Quarter 1 of FY 2020-21.
The sales volume of petrol has already crossed pre-Covid level, with diesel likely to reach there in the next 2-3 months, said IndianOil Chairman.
In the electric mobility sector, the ‘IOC Phinergy Private Limited’ has been formed between IndianOil and the Israeli company Phinergy, to commercialize Aluminium-Air Battery technology for the Original Equipment Manufacturers in India. Leading automobile companies have shown keen interest in the technology and prototype integration and field trials are expected to commence soon, Mr. Vaidya informed. This collaboration has potential advantages for India, including a viable and affordable e-mobility solution by leveraging the abundant Aluminium reserves in the country. Indian Oil to invest over 1 lakh cr.
In another crucial initiative, Mr. Vaidya stated in his AGM address that Indian Oil will be teaming up with Malaysia’s state-run oil and gas firm Petronas to expand the business scope of the existing Joint Venture company, IndianOil Petronas Pvt Ltd to include LNG terminals, CNG stations, CGD projects, CBG business and retailing of transportation fuels.
Talking about strengthening clean energy offerings, Mr. Vaidya said that IndianOil will build the nation’s first ‘Green Hydrogen’ plant at Mathura Refinery. The current project at Mathura Refinery will be pioneering the introduction of green Hydrogen in India. This new age, emission free fuel can be a game-changer for the country that is among the top crude oil-importing nations.
IndianOil R&D Centre has been undertaking cutting-edge research in all facets of Hydrogen, including production, storage, and applications like fuel cells. Hydrogen CNG (HCNG) experiment in Delhi, wherein IOC converted 50 CNG BS-IV buses to run on HCNG fuel, has revealed significant benefits in reducing exhaust emissions and improving the fuel economy. With the bulk of the transportation fleet consisting of BS-IV compliant buses, this is a promising development for improving the air quality of our cities, IndianOil Chairman informed during his AGM speech.
Indian Oil is also in the process of setting up one-tonne per day capacity pilot plants based on four innovative hydrogen production technologies. Indian Oil would be operating 15 fuel cell buses in the Delhi NCR region along with Tata Motors. The company also be seeding Hydrogen Mobility by commoditizing the surplus quantities of Hydrogen available at the Gujarat refinery with a dispensing facility for Hydrogen powered buses.
The mission of solarising our fuel stations is being actively pursued, along with scouting for new opportunities in the renewable energy sphere. With the addition of a Solar Photovoltaics capacity of around 6 Mega Watt (MW) during the year, the total Solar Power capacity is now over 65 MW. Moreover, IndianOil has a Wind Power capacity of about 167 MW, taking the total power generation from Renewable Energy during the year close to 330 GigaWatt Hour (GWh). This has resulted in emission mitigation of about 260 Thousand Metric Tonnes of Carbon dioxide equivalent (TMTCO2e). Indian Oil to invest over 1 lakh cr.
Strengthening our environmental stewardship, IndianOil is setting up a second (2G) and a third-generation (3G) ethanol plant at Panipat Refinery. The 2G plant of 100 Kilolitre per day capacity will use rice straw to produce ethanol. It is aimed at addressing the critical and perturbing issue of stubble burning and will gainfully use the agricultural residue for national welfare. The 128 Kilolitre per day capacity 3G ethanol Plant is based on LanzaTech’s innovative Gas Fermentation Technology to gainfully convert refinery off-gases into ethanol. Both the projects are nearing completion and are likely to be commissioned by the end of the current fiscal year.
To further strengthen our forays into biofuels, an agreement was recently signed between IndianOil and Verbio AG, the German biofuels giant, for setting up a Joint Venture company. The JV will steer Biofuel projects and set up Compressed Biogas Plants using the agricultural waste as feedstock to spell a new era in the Biogas segment for IndianOil. Another promising JV for setting up Biofuel projects with NAFED (National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Limited) is also on the anvil. This JV would leverage the NAFED outlets to market products like CBG and organic manures.
Sangeeta Kapure enters Zee TV’s Apna Time Bhi Aayega: Ever since its premiere, Zee TV’s Apna Time Bhi Aayega has been inspiring its audience with its thought-provoking tale and entertaining them with consistent twists and turns on the show. In fact, the recent conflicts between Rani (Megha Ray) and Ranvijay (Imran Khan) have kept viewers at the edge of their seats to see who will finally win this battle. While the mind games continue to entertain the viewers, a new twist in the form of Vijaya Shaktawat has recently entered the Rajawat household with a master plan to capture the entire property and declare herself as the new Rani Sa. Essaying this role is popular television actress Sangeeta Kapure who returns to playing a negative character after nearly 4 years.
Vijaya is Rani Sa’s cousin, who is poles apart from Rajeshwari and has been brought up in a very different way than her. She was always jealous of Rajeshwari and even though she got married in a rich household, her crass nature remained intact. Her chance to seek revenge and destroy Rani Sa’s life seems to be coming true with Ranvijay joining forces with her to make her plan a success. While Vijaya is determined to bring destruction to Rajeshwari’s life, Sangeeta is excited and eager to play this evil character. Sangeeta Kapure enters Zee TV’s Apna Time Bhi Aayega.
Talking about her return to playing a negative character with Apna Time Bhi Aayega, Sangeeta mentioned, “Vijaya’s character was a sealed deal for me from the moment I learned about the character. At that time, I could almost visualize myself in her shoes. Although I have essayed royal as well as negative characters in the past, this is the first role where I am essaying both the elements together which make the entire process even more exciting and challenging for me. I must add that most of my characters prior to this have been a little playful and chirpy in nature. But after a really long time, I am returning to a grey role and I am enjoying portraying the strong body language that comes with such a character. I have had a wonderful start with Apna Time Bhi Aayega and the team who cordially welcomed me. I hope to receive an equally warm response from the audience as well.” Sangeeta Kapure enters Zee TV’s Apna Time Bhi Aayega.
In the meantime, Apna Time Bhi Aayega also completed 250 episodes recently and as they move forward, the show is all set to entertain viewers with new twists and turns that Vijaya brings to everyone’s life. While her entry into the house has forced Rani Sa and her family to leave the house and reside in a crawl, Rajeswari is gearing up to fight back. But what will be Rani Sa’s next steps?
To find out, watch Apna Time Bhi Aayega every Monday to Saturday at 6:30 pm, only on Zee TV!

With a view to understanding the needs of the Indian consumers, Samsung revolutionized the concept of curd preparation for the Indian home and this resulted in the world’s first refrigerator that prepares curd, Curd Maestro™. This technology has changed the way curd is prepared and all this in simple steps by a refrigerator.
Samsung’s Curd Maestro™ range has become a boon for consumers to address the pain points of daily curd preparation and provides the advantage of setting your curd with no hands touched, keeping hygiene in mind, and without compromising the consistency and taste.
Samsung launched the world’s first frost-free refrigerator that makes curd, as part of its 2020 range of refrigerators, and considering its huge success, it has been introduced across capacities in Direct Cool and Side-by-Side category in 2021.
Curd Maestro™ refrigerator ensures that nothing comes in the way of you and your precious family time; enabling curd preparation in seven to eight hours — seven hours for soft curd, eight hours for thick curd. One needs to mix the curd culture with lukewarm milk while Curd Maestro™ does the most crucial part of the job — fermentation. It not only prepares the curd but also allows you to store it and keep it fresh for up to 3 days.
Curd Maestro™ makes curd with the same consistency each time and eliminates all the hassle of curd making in different weather conditions.
The Curd Maestro™ refrigerator makes fresh, healthy, tasty, and hygienic curd and transcends the conventional refrigerator landscape in India beyond food storage and food preservation to food preparation. The process of curd making is recommended by ICAR-National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI), Karnal.
Curd Maestro™’s contribution to the refrigerator business has increased 2X and the segment has grown by 300% vis-à-vis last year.
This meaningful innovation is part of Samsung India’s ‘Make for India’ initiative, based on a deep understanding of Indian consumers’ needs over the years and addresses their pain points. This has also helped Samsung to sustain the No. 1 position with 33% M/S in the refrigerator category and further widen the gap in 2021.
Janmashtmi (Dahi handi festival) is around the corner making it the perfect time to invest in this innovative design refrigerator that is sure to make our lives far more convenient.

The Bench highlighted that education was a fundamental right of children
The Supreme Court on Thursday asked the Centre whether it can immediately release funds from the PM-Cares Fund for the education of children who have been orphaned or have lost legal guardians or either of their parents during the pandemic.
A Bench of Justices L. Nageswara Rao and Aniruddha Bose highlighted that education was a fundamental right of children. Children needed to stay in school. It was especially anxious about the future of children who studied in private schools, where the fee may be on the higher side, and had lost their parents after the COVID-19 virus began disrupting lives since March 2020.
“Children should not lose the benefits of education because of the pandemic… Can the PM-Cares Fund come forward and immediately release some funds for the education of these children at least for the year? Is there any facility for that?” Justice Rao asked Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati, for the Centre.
Justice Rao said the Centre could coordinate with the States and help with the funds for the education of children. Justice Rao asked Ms Bhati to enquire with the Central authorities about the release of funds later in the day so that the court could pass an appropriate order.
“We can say that the States can contact the Central government for funds for the education of these children…” the Bench observed.
Justice Rao asked whether children who were eligible for financial help under the PM-Cares Fund had so far been identified.
Three categories
“The children have been separated into three categories — those who have lost both parents, those who have lost either parent and those who have lost their legal guardians,” Ms Bhati said.
The law officer said the onus of identifying the children had been given to the District Magistrates concerned.
Justice Rao, at this point, highlighted that information about these children had been uploaded by the States on the website of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR).
“With this information available on the NCPCR, you can see that the benefits of PM-Cares Fund can be given to the children,” Justice Rao said.
During the hearing, Justice Rao said some States such as Gujarat and Maharashtra had tied up with NGOs to aid the cause of education of children personally affected during the COVID-19 days.
The court urged the States to take care of the children, saying they were vulnerable and should fall into “undesirable hands”.
“They do not have the means to protect themselves. The State has to protect them,” Justice Rao addressed advocate Mehfooz A. Nazki, counsel for Andhra Pradesh.
In one instance while hearing the welfare measures adopted by various States, Justice Rao told advocate Diksha Rai Goswami for Assam, “take care that children are not thrown out of schools”.
In a June hearing, advocate Gaurav Agarwal, who is amicus curiae in the suo motu case, had pieced together media reports and explained to the court that the government, through PM-CARES, proposed to help children impacted by COVID-19 continue their education.
“It would fund whatever educational requirements, in the form of uniforms, textbooks, etc. The scheme would also offer financial help to children for their higher education. Mr Agrawal said a corpus of ₹10 lakh for each child. The child would get the corpus amount in lump-sum on reaching the age of 23. “This may be so that he or she would have some money when they start on their own… There is also health insurance till the age of 18,” Mr Agrawal had submitted then.
Mr Agrawal said the pandemic had wreaked havoc in the lives of many children who had either lost both parents or guardians to the virus. He said, quoting the newspaper report, that there had been a marked increase in child trafficking, especially of girls. Mr Agrawal said the government had an obligation to protect children.

This comes hours after an Indian Air Force transport aircraft managed to evacuate around 85 Indians from Kabul; the plane has landed safely in Dushanbe in Tajikistan
New Delhi: Around 150 Indian citizens picked up by the Taliban this morning have been released and are now inside Kabul airport, sources have told NDTV, adding that they will be airlifted out of war-torn Afghanistan soon.
Here are the top 10 points in this big story
Indian citizens waiting outside Kabul airport for evacuation flights were taken to a nearby police station for questioning and checking of travel documents, a top government source said, amid worrying reports from local media that they had been abducted.
Earlier, some news outlets in Kabul claimed the Taliban had abducted over 150 people, including Indians. The Taliban rejected that claim; a tweet by Sharif Hassan, a Kabul-based reporter for The New York Times, quoted a spokesperson for the group.
The Taliban’s ‘picking up’ of Indian citizens comes hours after an Air Force transport aircraft managed to evacuate around 85 Indians from Kabul; the plane has landed safely in Tajikistan, sources said, adding that a second aircraft is on standby in India.
Sources this morning said the government is trying to bring as many Indians as possible into the airport at Kabul to keep them safe while it works out the evacuation logistics.
India has evacuated all embassy staff but an estimated 1,000 citizens remain in several cities in the war-torn country and ascertaining their location and condition is proving to be a challenge, a Home Ministry official has said.
Among those are around 200 Sikhs and Hindus at a gurudwara in Kabul. Late Wednesday a spokesperson for the Taliban – which is trying to project a more moderate image – released a video of the gurudwara head saying he had been assured of safety.
Separately the political office of the Taliban also sent messages to Delhi urging against the evacuation of embassy staff, saying India had nothing to fear for their safety.
However, days before those ‘outreach’ messages sources said Taliban forces had entered at least two of India’s consulates, “ransacked” offices, and took away documents and parked vehicles. A senior official told NDTV “we expected this…”
Foreign Minister S Jaishankar this week said the government is “very carefully” monitoring the situation in Kabul and Afghanistan, but that the immediate focus is on safely evacuating all citizens. Asked how India plans to deal with Taliban leaders, he said it is “early days”, and did not comment if the government is in touch with the group.
The Taliban took control of Afghanistan Sunday after President Ashraf Ghani fled and the group walked into Kabul with no opposition. This was after a staggeringly fast rout of major cities, after two decades of war that has claimed hundreds of thousands of lives.

New Delhi: The Taliban entered at least two of India’s consulates in Afghanistan on Wednesday, searched for documents, and took away parked cars, government sources said today, expressing worry that it meant the group is acting against the assurances its leaders have been giving to the world.
Members of the Taliban “ransacked” the Indian consulates in Kandahar and Herat, which are closed, according to the sources. They “searched closets” in Kandahar for papers and took away vehicles parked at both the consulates.
“We expected this. They ransacked the place searched documents and also took away our parked vehicles from both embassies,” a senior officer told NDTV.
Days before the raid, the Taliban had reached out to Delhi, saying that did not want India to evacuate diplomats from its Kabul embassy. Sources say the government had received messages from the group’s Qatar office assuring them of the safety of Indian staff and security personnel.
The messages – sent from the office of Abbas Stanikzai, the chief of the Taliban’s political unit – were routed via contacts in Kabul and Delhi.
Earlier this week, India carried out a difficult evacuation of its embassy staff in two Indian Air Force C-17 aircraft that flew out of Kabul. India’s ambassador to Afghanistan was also brought back as diplomats and civilians scrambled to get out of the country after the Taliban’s takeover. But over 1,000 Indian nationals are still stuck across Afghanistan.
After its breakneck takeover of the Afghan capital, the Taliban has been carrying out door-to-door searches in Kabul to identify Afghans who worked for the National Directorate of Security, the state-run intelligence agency.
India operated four consulates in the country, besides the embassy in Kabul. Apart from Kandahar and Herat, India also had a consulate in Mazar-i-Sharif, which was shut down days before the Taliban took control. The embassy in Kabul is not officially shut; it is operating with local help.
An intelligence document for the UN has revealed that the Taliban are going house-to-house searching for people who worked with the US and NATO forces, according to news agency AFP.
The “targeted searches” have raised fears that the group, which has launched a PR blitz and has claimed complete amnesty for rivals, does not intend to stick to its word.
New Delhi is also concerned about the support the group is getting from various terror organizations.
Government’s intelligence sources reveal the Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula has released a statement on the Taliban victory, “praising and congratulating the group on its emancipation in Afghanistan”. Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham in Syria also released an official statement in support of the Taliban. “The Turkistan Islamic Party (TIP) based in western China has also issued a statement congratulating the Taliban. Events are unfolding at a very high pace – we are keeping a watch,” a senior government source said.

With the strong belief in the ‘power of engaged connections’ and the aspiration to meet its viewers at their doorstep, Azaad and MX Player are all set to reach out to the Indian diaspora with new stories embedded in the rural fabric and culture. Beginnen Media recently launched Azaad with its premise being ‘People First. Rural First’. MX Player, with its large and diverse audience of over 200 million monthly active users believes in ‘everytainment’ and caters to its audiences with varied entertainment palettes. This unique business move comes as a strategic content UnionShip for both brands. In an industry, where the norm is that of media conglomerates repurposing their linear content for their Over-the-top (OTT) platforms, this is the first partnership where two standalone entities have come together to leverage their strengths, create unique content, and reach wider audiences. Azaad will soon add to its repertoire original content, besides the syndicated content that is currently on air.
India’s First Rural Entertainment Channel: In recent years, OTT platforms and TV penetration had already begun changing the way the world consumed content. The pandemic and the resulting lockdowns accelerated that process manifold. According to a recent PwC report, India is currently the world’s fastest-growing OTT market and is set to become the sixth-largest around the globe by 2024. Providers with the most unified viewing and search experiences will see growth. In the post-COVID world, people will prioritize their spending which will result in more freely available and easily accessible models in the long term. OTT and television will not be competing for mediums but will co-exist and enable in transition for family home audiences who enjoy cohesive viewing and also offer the same entertainment experiences to audiences to enjoy content on the go.
Beginnen Media’s Managing Director, Bharat Kumar Ranga, says, “The UnionShip with MX Player offers a seamless consumer experience on both mediums as we attempt to be innovators at the intersection of TV and digital. Azaad is for people with rural mindsets where people access entertainment on both TV and the internet. We needed to find the right anchor that compliments Azaad on the internet. MX Player immediately aligned to our vision as we share a commonality of consumer centricity that will assist us with our expansion goals for Azaad and MX Player. MX valued our idea and intent and Azaad loved their youthfulness, vigor, hunger for growth, and uncanny consumer centricity. For consumers, MX and Azaad will appear like one common platform. This reflects Beginnen Media’s entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to using our experience of innovation as the roadmap for propelling the industry forward to an all-new way of doing business.”
Elaborating on the same, Karan Bedi – CEO, MX Group said, “In an industry first, this association will transcend traditional TV and digital OTT to drive synergies and foster growth for both players, by creating innovative new content and catering to a larger audience set. As a platform that can reach consumers at every touchpoint, this strategic partnership with Azaad is sure to entertain the masses and drive more engagement for both brands.”
Rachin Khanijo, Beginnen Media, Chief Marketing Officer, adds, “We believe that this distinct UnionShip with MX Player will surely be the best manner in which two standalone brands together will unlock the power of TV and OTT in an integrated manner by leveraging synergies to reach and engage with maximum viewers. We have approached this association creatively as well as strategically to ensure that there’s a strong audience fit and have planned on scaling it with projected metrics of what TV and digital are expected to deliver – both at an attributed and holistic level.
Mansi Shrivastav, SVP, and Head – Content Acquisitions & Alliances, MX Player concluded saying, “This unique union ship compliments MX strategically – adding many hues of entertainment to our diverse content offering and bringing with it fresh, young, and new flavors reflecting the ethos of today’s rural Indian fabric. New Delhi: India is following the events in Afghanistan “very carefully” and the focus is on ensuring the security and safe return of Indian nationals who are still in the war-torn country, Foreign Minister Dr. S Jaishankar told reporters in New York on Wednesday. Asked how India views and deals with the Taliban leadership, he said it is still “early days”, not offering direct comment on whether or not India was in touch with the Taliban.
“At this point of time, we are looking at the evolving situation in Kabul… as Taliban and its representatives have come to Kabul and I think we need to take it from there,” he added when asked whether India has had any communication with Taliban in the recent days.
Asked whether India will continue its investments and engagement in Afghanistan, the minister said the “historical relationship with the Afghan people” continues. “
That will guide our approach in the coming days. I think at this time, these are early days, and our focus on safety and security of the Indian nationals who are there,” he added.
Addressing reporters after a meeting of the UN Security Council, Dr. Jaishankar said the situation in Afghanistan is “really what has been very much the focus of my own engagements here, talking to the UN Secretary-General and other colleagues who are here as well as the US Secretary of State.”
“At the moment we are, like everybody else, very carefully following developments in Afghanistan. I think our focus is on ensuring the security in Afghanistan and the safe return of Indian nationals who are there,” he said.
India has assured that it would repatriate Hindus and Sikhs from Afghanistan. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also said that the country will stand by its friends and allies in the war-torn country, which many are desperate to leave.
On Tuesday, India evacuated the last of its staff from the embassy in Kabul including the ambassador and the Indo-Tibetan Border Policepersonnel who were in charge of security. The pullout took place amid curfew declared by the Taliban, which made took over Kabul on Sunday.
India Quietly Readies an Amazon Slayer – Open E-Commerce: The investing world is enthralled by a determined Beijing as it cuts China’s private sector down to size by relentless regulatory action. That’s good news for New Delhi: Its more subtle maneuvers in the same direction are going largely unnoticed.
Amazon.com Inc. and Walmart Inc.’s Flipkart, however, would surely have felt the rising temperatures. Even as they weigh draft e-commerce rules that seek to restrict online marketplaces – not just theirs, but also the planned super-app by India’s Tata Group – a new existential threat lurks around the corner: a state-sponsored open network for digital commerce.
Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal has set up a committee, chaired by him, to “democratize digital commerce” and “provide alternatives to proprietary e-commerce sites,” according to a ministry press release.
In China, homegrown stores like Taobao, Tmall, and JD.com have an unshakable dominance in online retail. But now, the only other billion-people-plus opportunity open to American capital is also slipping away from its grasp.
It’s unclear how exactly India’s open e-commerce network will work – or if it will work at all. The template, according to the press statement, is the country’s highly successful Unified Payments Interface, a public utility that allows any entity to process real-time payments over smartphones provided a set of common protocols is followed. The UPI network has in a short time eclipsed proprietary card-based payments.
Fashioning a similar open network for online commerce will be a lot trickier. It’s easy to make a set of rules where there’s a simple, single-point objective of satisfying the central bank that the same funds aren’t being spent twice. Commerce, by contrast, involves far fuzzier outcomes. Did the consumer get the product she paid for? Did it arrive in one piece? Was the article genuine or a counterfeit? Was the returns policy enforceable? Additionally, brands selling online have to worry about resellers’ creditworthiness and their ability to manage complicated distribution logistics in a country with poor physical infrastructure.
The ministry says that merchants will be able to save their data under the open network to build credit history and reach consumers, breaking silos imposed by platforms “to drive innovation and scale.” Several questions arise: Are Amazon and Walmart-Flipkart, which aren’t directing even 10% of India’s $800 billion annual retail sales between them, stifling innovation to a point where the harm exceeds their positive influence from aggregating demand? Should they, therefore, be mandated to operate their merchant-onboarding processes according to some preset rules, eroding much of their power to determine what goes on over platforms in which they have invested billions of dollars? Like everywhere else, the danger with dominant marketplaces in India is that they will copy the bestselling ideas of merchants and introduce them as private labels. But is this threat currently so large as to require a systematic downgrading of platforms?
Not allowed to own inventory, the two dominant foreign-owned marketplaces have solved many of the underlying problems of trust by using a handful of large sellers they can control. This practice, challenged by some traders’ groups as discriminatory, is now in the crosshairs of India’s competition regulator. So intense is the scrutiny that Amazon’s joint venture with Indian software tycoon Narayana Murthy has decided to fold up by the middle of next year. The seven-year-old JV owns Cloudtail, the largest seller on Amazon’s India website. As the news website Morning Context notes, Cloudtail helped relatively smaller manufacturers – such as a saree brand from Rajasthan – acquire national reach on Amazon, something they may not have achieved on their own. Consumers are getting more choices than before. Once large platform-aligned buyers like Cloudtail are chased out, Amazon’s customer satisfaction scores could be hard to sustain.
As India deliberately de-emphasizes the platform model, even the conglomerate Tata Group, which is planning a marketplace extending from fashion and lifestyle to electronics, maybe handicapped if it’s unable to sell a cup of Starbucks coffee on its website. That’s because Starbucks Corp.’s joint venture in India with Tata makes it a connected party, which can’t act as a seller on the super-app, according to draft e-commerce rules. Ditto for Walmart Inc.’s separate wholesale unit. As an affiliated entity of Flipkart, it may not be allowed to hawk a shirt on the retail website.
The winner may be someone pursuing a different business model for aggregating supplies. Mukesh Ambani, India’s richest man, controls both the largest chain of physical stores and the biggest telco. Ambani’s Reliance Industries Ltd. could carry its own inventory, using its $180 billion balance sheet to buy and stock third-party merchandise and sell it online or offline – or in a hybrid online-offline setup.
A deliberate assault on the economics of digital platforms will possibly rank among the most far-reaching separations of platforms and commerce seen anywhere in recent years – save China’s recent forced restructuring of Ant Group Co.’s operations. America’s historic moves to segregate coal from railroads, commercial enterprises from banking, and television networks from programming took place in a very different era that ended with breaking up AT&T Inc.’s lock on communications in 1982. But the pendulum is swinging again. Lina Khan, chosen by President Joe Biden to chair the Federal Trade Commission, is a keen proponent of a more muscular approach to reining in tech platforms.
This shifting zeitgeist gives New Delhi the perfect cover to prepare its Amazon slayer, even though digital commerce in India is at present just a sideshow. Far bigger anticompetitive forces are at play in sectors ranging from telecoms and ports to airports.
But then, politicians like to invent challenges that don’t exist, rather than tackle those that do. An open digital commerce network is one such solution searching for a problem. Emasculating the economics of platforms will give a big advantage to retailers who are allowed to own inventory. It could turn out to be more efficient, but not necessarily more competitive.
