Strange Airport: Gibraltar, World’s Only Airport Runway Intersecting a Road

Strange Airport: Gibraltar Gibraltar Airport, World’s Only Airport Runway Intersecting a Road
Cars wait patiently as a Jumbo taxies on the runway at the Gibraltar Airport.

Gibraltar Airport or North Front Airport is a civilian airport that serves the British overseas territory of Gibraltar, a tiny peninsula with an area of only 6.8 square kilometres. The lack of flat space on Gibraltar means the peninsula’s only runway is bisected by its busiest road, the Winston Churchill Avenue that heads towards the land border with Spain. A pair of flimsy-looking barriers closes vehicular traffic every time a plane lands or departs. Fortunately, it’s not a busy airport. It handles only about 30 flights a week, all flying to and from the United Kingdom.

Gisborne Airport, A Strange Airport : Runway With a Railway Crossing

Gisborne Airport is a undersized regional airport that is situated on the western outskirts of Gisborne, the East Coast of the North Island of New Zealand. The unique thing about this airport is one of the very few airports in the world that has a railway line intersecting the runway. The beautiful Gisborne airport covers a land of 160 hectares has three grass runways and one main runway that are intersected by the Palmerston North – Gisborne Railway Line. The airport has a single terminal with two tarmac gates.

The Tasmania’s North Western Coast, Wynyard Airport also had a railway crossing on the runway but moribund rail traffic forced the closure of rail traffic in early 2005, and thus the Wynyard airport rail crossing is no more operational. At Gisborne Airport on the other hand, the rail route functions actively and so does the airport everyday between 6:30 in the morning and 8:30 at night. After that, the runway is sealed off till morning.

One of the more appealing aspects of the Napier-Gisborne railway line is when the line passes directly on top of the Gisborne Airport runway; trains have to stop and look for clearance from the air traffic control tower to cross the runway and continue down the line. The railway tracks splits the runway approximately in the middle and very often trains or aircraft are stopped until one of them moves on.

Indeed it is a very challenging job for the airport authorities to manage landing at the intersecting runway along the operational rail route which has scheduled departures and arrivals itself. The Gisborne airport is a main link to enter the little region of Gisborne and hosts more than 60 domestic flights, and over 150,0000 passengers fly through this airport each year.

Maharashtra government pushes take-off of 11 new airports

Maharashtra government pushes take-off of 11 new airports

The state government has fast-tracked the development of Multi-modal International Cargo Hub and Airport at Nagpur (MIHAN) and 10 other new airports. The State has set up an 11-member Project Monitoring & Implementation Committee (PMIC), headed by Chief Secretary Sumit Malik, for early clearance of the Request For Proposal (RFP), Concession Agreement and other documents necessary for the bidding process and awarding the contract. PMIC’s members include joint secretary of the Union Civil Aviation Ministry and chairman of the Airports Authority of India.

Recently, a similar PMIC, chaired by the Chief Secretary, approved the financial bid submitted by GVK-led Mumbai International Airport’s (MIAL) to construct the Navi Mumbai International Airport.

MIHAN is an airport project for Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport in Nagpur, hometown of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union Minister of Transport Nitin Gadkari. Ten other airports are being developed at Kolhapur, Shirdi, Amravati, Gondia, Nashik, Jalgaon, Nanded, Solapur, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg.

They are all under the Centre’s Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS), part of the ambitious National Civil Aviation Policy, 2010.

MIHAN aims to exploit Nagpur’s central location and convert the present airport into a major cargo hub with integrated road and rail connectivity. The project is made up of two parts – an international airport that will act as a cargo hub and a Special Economic Zone with a residential zone.

The project cost is envisaged at Rs 2,581 crore, based on 2002 rates and it is expected to attract investment of over Rs 20,000 crore.

An officer from the state Civil Aviation department told DNA, “The PMIC will have a major role in providing timely clearances for RFP, Concession Agreement and other documents necessary for the development of MIHAN and 10 other airports. After PMIC’s approval, the State cabinet will give the final nod.”

As reported by DNA, the state government has appointed the Maharashtra Airports Development Company (MADC) as co-ordinator and facilitator for 28 existing airports, and the development of MIHAN and 10 other new airports under RCS. The state government has already agreed to provide a slew of sops, including tax-cut on air fuel for 10 years, free-of-cost land, and electricity and water at concessional rates.

1921 Movie trailer: Watch Karan Kundrra and Zareen Khan bring back the horror

1921 Movie trailer Watch Karan Kundrra and Zareen Khan bring back the horror

The makers of the 1920 franchise have released the new trailer of their upcoming 1921 Movie trailer featuring Karan Kundrra and Zareen Khan in the lead roles. Karan plays Ayush, a would-be musician who comes to foggy England, in the year 1921, to pursue his artistic training before getting distracted or haunted, by a shape-shifting spirit with serious anger management issues. Enter Rose, played by Zareen, who can see and control spirits.

The 1921 Movie trailer took us back to Victorian building and spooky atmosphere. But this time there are a lot more ghosts, poltergeists, wraiths and aatmas for the movie’s unlucky protagonists to handle. The trailer features the usual Bhattian elements of lilting piano tracks, questionable CGI, and singularly embarrassing attempts at lovemaking. The 1921 Movie trailer has many moments of ghosts and spirits but you anticipate it coming, which makes you lose hope that it will manage to standout like the first one, 1920 starring Adah Sharma.

This is Karan Kundra’ first movie in Bollywood in a leading role. He was earlier seen in ‘Mubarakan’ starring Arjun Kapoor. Meanwhile, for Zarine, this is her first horror film while Karan has earlier worked with Vikram Bhatt in 2012 starrer ‘Horror Story’. Written and directed by Vikram Bhatt, produced by Reliance Entertainment and Vikram Bhatt, ‘1921’ is all set to release on January 12, 2018.

Ram Setu is man-made, says the new Science Channel show ‘What on Earth’

Ram Setu is man-made, says the new Science Channel show ‘What on Earth’

The promo of an upcoming show on Discovery Communications-owned Science Channel, has made the claims that the Ram Setu bridge between India and Sri Lanka was not formed naturally but it is man-made, and if these claims are true, they can prove to be one of the biggest discoveries in recent times about the much talked about Ram Setu.

The Show called ‘What on Earth’ will air the episode called Ancient Land Bridge on the Science channel. The promo of the show has given out plenty of details already, in the promo American geologists and scientist are seen talking about the bridge and explaining how it could be man-made.

This discovery certainly puts its weight behind the Hindu mythological text in Ramayana that claimed that Lord Ram built the Ram Setu Bridge to travel to Sri Lanka. However, the promo does not state when the promo will be aired.

Sethusamudram shipping canal project

It acquired political prominence when the Indian government planned the Sethusamudram shipping canal project, meant to create a shipping route through the Gulf of Munnar. Ships that currently sail from the West coast of India bound for the eastern hemisphere currently have to circumnavigate Sri Lanka because the Gulf of Munnar is shallow and cannot be used by ships. The Sethusamudram project aims to reduce the distance the ships have to travel.

The News18 report said that this would reduce the distance between India’s west and east coasts by about 350 nautical miles, saving about 10-30 hours of sailing time. A bridge would also add to India’s exchequer through shipping fees, it was felt.

However, doing so would damage the Adam’s Bridge section of the maritime border between India and Sri Lanka. The matter reached the Supreme Court, with several petitions challenging the government’s plan of dredging the Ram Setu to construct its shipping channel.

To resolve this dispute, the Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR) was tasked with researching if the chain of islands were man-made or historic, said a report on The Telegraph. The BJP, which was in the Opposition at the time the project was first conceived, had been opposing it citing people’s beliefs that Lord Ram created the path to reach Lanka to rescue Sita and that the islets should be protected.

In March this year, ICHR chairman Y Sudershan Rao said their research could influence the government’s plans for the future of the Sethusamudram project. “We will look for material confirmation on whether it was a natural phenomenon or some human efforts were there,” Rao was quoted as saying in the report.

The problem, however, Rao said, is that there was a “dark period” in history — between 4th Millennium BC and the 1st Millennium BC, and that they were trying to analyse this period in greater depth.

Shame on Narendra Modi for making wild allegations against Manmohan Singh: Sharad Pawar

Shame on Narendra Modi for making wild allegations against Manmohan Singh: Sharad Pawar

NAGPUR: Veteran politician and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president Sharad Pawar has heavily criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for alleging that his predecessor Manmohan Singh was conspiring with Pakistan for the BJP’s defeat in Gujarat.

Addressing a massive rally on after leading a massive ‘Jan Aakrosh Halla Bol’ procession, the NCP supremo Sharad Pawar said PM Modi should be ashamed of making such “wild allegations” against Singh, whom “no one in the world could point fingers at”.

“Shame on you, prime minister, for making such allegations! You have made the allegations against this country’s former prime minister (Manmohan Singh) and former defence officials,” Pawar, a former defence minister himself, said.

“Ever since the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government has taken power, it has destroyed the country, it is indulging in extremely dirty politics and it has invoked Pakistan merely to cling to power. It is a very sad development,” Pawar added.

“This attempt to invoke Pakistan was made to divert the people’s attention towards the government’s failures in addressing the farmers’ issues, lack of jobs and other people’s issues,” Pawar alleged.

“The Modi government has not solved the issues of farmers and other issues the country is facing, but he is bringing the Pakistan angle as a diversionary tactic during the Gujarat elections,” Pawar said.

Modi, while speaking at a poll rally in Gujarat on Sunday, had sought to link the dinner meeting hosted by Aiyar for Pakistani dignitaries and attended by Manmohan Singh, among others, with the ongoing Assembly polls and a conspiracy against the BJP.

Pawar made the comments while addressing the massive rally jointly with the Congress and other parties against the BJP-Shiv Sena government.

Sharad Pawar – who led a political procession after 37 years, said when Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis was informed of Tuesday’s procession, he responded that he “would show them their place when they came to him”.

“The CM has threatened us. He has complete authority to govern the state, but if he threatens to throw us in jail, the farmers of the state are powerful enough to uproot you from power,” Pawar warned.

Senior Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad also alleged that Modi has stooped to a low level and levelling allegations against the people of his own country.

The procession, signaling a realignment of the political opposion, was led by an ailing Pawar – who recently underwent a toe surgery, but he appeared fit, cheerful and in full form.

Joined by an estimated 200,000 farmers and party activists from entire Vidarbha region of eastern Maharasthra, the procession started from Dhanwate National College grounds and slowly wended its way to the Maharashtra Legislature which has currently assembled here for the Winter Session in the state’s second capital.

It culminated there into a rally which was addressed by Pawar, several senior NCP leaders Praful Patel, Tatkare, Leader of Opposition in Council Dhanjay Munde, Congress’s former Union Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, state Congress President Ashok Chavan, Leader of Opposition in Assembly Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil and others from both parties.

Tuesday’s procession-cum-rally was part of the ongoing agitation launched by the NCP on December 1, in different parts of the state intended to “condemn and awaken the sleeping state government on its various unfulfilled promises” for the people of Maharashtra.

Besides the national parties, the procession saw participation of activists and leaders of other smaller and regional parties like Samajwadi Party, Peasants & Workers Party, Republican Party of India-G and RPI-K, farmers groups, etc

RIL owes over Rs 1,900 crore in surcharge dues to MMRDA: CM Devendra Fadnavis

NAGPUR: Reliance Industries (RIL ) owes “additional surcharge” of more than Rs 1,900 crore to state- run agency MMRDA for delay in development of plots in Mumbai, the Maharashtra Assembly was informed today.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis gave this information while responding to a query by MLA Sharad Sonawane during the Question Hour of the Winter Session, which is held in Nagpur.

The MLA from Junnar in Pune district had sought to know the names of the companies which have not paid surcharge for delay in plot development to the MMRDA (Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority).

In a written reply in the Lower House, Fadnavis said: “Construction in the G-block of Bandra Kurla Complex owned by MMRDA was not completed by some firms within the (stipulated) four-year period. Hence, additional surcharge for such a delay has not been paid yet by some companies, including RIL.”

“The dues include Rs 441.08 crore for plot number C-66 and Rs 1,538.73 crore for plot number C-64 from RIL alone,” said Fadnavis, who is also Chairman of the authority.

RIL is constructing a convention-cum-exhibition centre in Bandra Kurla Complex, an upscale business district in Mumbai’s suburbs.

There was no immediate comment from RIL on the issue.

Fadnavis said the other companies which have “not yet paid their dues are the Indian Newspaper Society (Rs 56.02 crore for plot number C-63, Jamunaben Foundation (Rs 24.09 crore for plot numbers SF 7 and 9B), Talim Research Foundation (Rs 33.39 crore for plot number SF 6) and Naman Hotel Rs 31.68 crore for plot numbers C-57 and 58”.
These companies have not paid the surcharge for the last many years, he said.

The outstanding figures were issued by MMRDA under RTI queries.

Jail term, fine for selling mineral water above MRP: Report

The Centre on Tuesday informed the SC that there was a provision in law that penalises selling of packaged drinking mineral water above its mrp

The Centre on Tuesday informed the Supreme Court that there was a provision in law that penalises selling of packaged mineral water above its maximum retail price (MRP). The law also proposes a jail term for the habitual offending restaurants or by similar entities or individuals. The government while backing its argument says charging more than MRP is against consumer interests and it also results in evasion of tax, according to News18.

“Sale of packaged water over MRP by hotels and restaurants may have implications regarding tax evasion as a bottle purchased by a hotel at cost price, which should be sold at MRP or less, is being sold at much higher prices, leading to possible loss of additional revenue to the government in the form of service tax or excise duty etc.,” said the government.

The Ministry of Consumer Affairs which was representing the government in the apex court filed its response to the petition brought in by the Federation of Hotels and Restaurants Association of India. According to the ministry, the Legal Metrology Act bars overcharging for packaged mineral water and also recommends monetary fine or a jail term for first offence.

Section 36 of the LMA clearly says anyone found selling, distributing or delivering any pre-packaged commodity not in conformity to the declarations on the package shall be punished with fine of up to Rs 25,000 for the first offence. The monetary penalty can go up to Rs 50,000 for second offence and can further rise to Rs 1 lakh and a year’s jail term if the violation occurs yet again.

Tuesday’s affidavit by the central government comes in response to the petition filed by the hotels association of India that had challenged a 2015 Delhi High Court order upholding statutory provisions with regard to packaged drinking water.

A minor scuffle ensued when some lady police constables tried to evict Ms. Sule and other NCP women workers from the road, resulting in an injury to Ms. Sule.

The police also arrested Ms. Sule, senior NCP leader Anil Deshmukh, and other NCP leaders.

All of them were released after some time.

Ms. Sule again joined the protest march after she was released along with the NCP’s Maharashtra unit president Sunil Tatkare and criticized the Devendra Fadnavis government for using the police against protesters.

State asks for extra Rs 26402.32 crore in Nagpur winter session

Nagpur: The state government has proposed to make provision of each of Rs 1000 crore from the Scheduled Tribes (STs) plan and plan for Scheduled Caste (SCs) plan to cover beneficiaries from ST and SC respectively. Additional provision of Rs. 13,000 crore has been proposed through supplementary demands worth Rs. 26,402 crore on Monday in Assembly. Opposition NCP criticised for reducing approved budget provision meant for SCs and STs to implement loan waiver scheme.

Devendra Fadnavis led Maharashtra government tabled supplementary demands for crop loan waiver scheme on the first day of the winter session of the state legislature at Nagpur on Monday even as the opposition tried to disrupt the proceedings of the house. The government then tabled supplementary demands of over Rs 26,000 crore of which Rs 15,000 crore are meant for the crop loan waiver scheme. Dhananjay Munde, leader of opposition in Upper House said, “State want to curtail provision already approved for the welfare of SCs and STs. It will affect scholarship schemes and other development programme of the SCs and STs.” He added his party will oppose this proposal and will ask to find out alternate. “We are not against to make financial provision for farmers. But when chief minister Devendra Fadnavis said state’s financial situation is sound and under control, he should not grab the money from budget of SCs and STs,” said Munde.

Full Body Protector suits for Police Personnel Debut in Winter Session Nagpur

Nagpur: MAKING ITS debut at the ongoing Assembly winter session in Nagpur, the Maharashtra Police personnel, both men and women, were seen donning full body protector. The newly acquired full body suits that were so far used by paramilitary forces like the CRPF will now be used by the state police, especially during riots or mob control situations.
The state police recently received the first batch of 600 such suits. A total of Rs 1.67 crore has been allocated by the state government. “The cost of Full Body Protector one suit is Rs 15,680. So far, we have procured 600 suits and 450 suits will arrive shortly,” said a senior official from the Director General of Police’s office.

The main purpose of purchasing the suits is to prevent the police from overusing the force during a law and order situation. “In a riot-like situation or any major law and order breakdown, where mob is seen resorting to stone pelting or violence, we have seen the police retreat using lathis or charging at the mob, sometimes even leading to fatalities.

In many cases, we are blamed for using excess force. These suits would help us ensure that even if the crowd gets unruly, the gear protects the personnel from injuries caused during such breakdowns and restrain them from retaliating. It will ultimately prevent the police from overusing force,” the official added.

Director General of Police Satish Mathur said procurement is part of the police modernisation exercise. “The Full Body Protector suits will be donned by men and women from the RCP, SRPF and the local police while controlling a riot-like situation.

The first batch of suits has recently arrived and is already being used,” Mathur told The Indian Express. “The November 2008 attack exposed our vulnerabilities and asserted the need to better-equip ourselves. The weapons and heavy equipment procured, match the international standards and will be distributed amongst the specialised forces, who are the first responders in case of any law and order situation,” Mathur added.

Nine years after the 26/11 terror attack in Mumbai that exposed poor-preparedness of the police so far, around Rs 250 crores have been spent by the state police to procure state-of-the art weapons and equipment.

The state government is also procuring robots and will take help of Artificial Intelligence. The police will heavily rely on Internet of Things (IoT) to secure the state.
The advanced equipment being purchased include bullet proof jackets, shields, endoscopes, thermal imaging reflex sights, assault rifles and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) among others. The state police recently bought 4,600 bullet proof (BP) jackets that are now being tested at the Central Forensic Laboratory in Chandigarh to see if they can be used in combat operations. Once certified, they would be pressed into use. The police have also procured 1,500 bullet proof helmets.

Both the BP jackets and helmets have been bought from a Kanpur-based company, MKU Industries. The state police has recently floated a tender calling for bids related to bomb suits.

The DGP’s office that makes procurement on behalf of the state has ensured that fire power of the police force is not compromised. The office has placed an order for over 1,000 AK-47s, 500 MP5 and substantial numbers of corner shots – a weapon accessory that allows to shoot around the corner without exposing the operator to a counter attack. A corner shot has a camera and a video monitor to assist the shooter.
The advanced weapons would be used by specialised units, like the QRTs, Force One and the C-60 commandos in naxal-affected areas.

The birth anniversary of a political leader is generally marked with celebrations, the receipt of bouquets, the distribution of sweets and other such activities. But Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president and former agriculture minister Sharad Pawar will be celebrating his 77th birthday — on Tuesday — by heading a rally in Nagpur. Sharad Pawar will attend the Halla Bol Aakrosh March along with senior Congress leader Ghulab Nabi Azad.

The Congress and NCP will jointly lead the rally and it will be a rare occasion that Pawar takes to an agitation against the state government. The march is aimed at cornering the BJP-Sena government in the state for its unfulfilled election promises. Senior NCP leader and MLC Hemant Takale said, “It is true that Pawar will be agitating against the state government after 32 years. It was in 1985, when Sharad Pawar had organised a cycle rally against the then state government of the Samajwadi Congress. It was organised from Jalgaon to Nagpur. While Sharad Pawar has participated in marches in Mumbai and Pune since then, from the point of view of a state-related rally, he is doing so for the first time in 32 years.”

“For the first time, he will be agitating on his birthday in the interest of the people. The way this government is neglecting farmers’ issues like Minimum Sales Price (MSP) for agri goods and the disbursement of loan waivers, he has decided to protest against this government and walk on the street,” said the NCP supremo’s nephew and former deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar.

Speaking with Firstpost, he said, “Generally, Pawar (Sr) used to stay at home in Pune or Mumbai and have a low-profile event. The only events organised on his birthday were health checkups and blood donation drives for those in need. But to wake up the sleeping BJP-led government, a joint Congress and NCP march will be held on Tuesday. As part of the Halla Bol agitation — 1 to 10 December, we walked 140 kilometres and noted that Nagpur and the entire Vidarbha region is in distress about this anti-farmer government.”

The rally will begin at Lokmat Chowk, where Pawar Sr will address the rally. The combined march against the BJP-led government will be a show of strength with more than a dozen leaders from each party likely to take to the streets. It is believed that Pawar, a senior and respected leader from the state, heading the rally will lend the event some heft. Azad is expected to attend as well, said MP Ashok Chavan.

“It’s a combined Opposition march in which the Congress, NCP, RPI, Peasants and Workers Party and Samajwadi Party will be participating. The objective is to target the government that has failed miserably on all fronts in the past three years. Right now, our priority is the combined Opposition march and ensuring its success. More than two lakh participants are set to attend the rally,” said Chavan.

“The BJP-led government just makes grand promises and then fails to implement any of them. The popularity graph of the BJP has quickly dropped and the Opposition is united in exposing the weak government,” added the former chief minister.

However, senior BJP leader and education minister Vinod Tawde said his party was ready for the morcha. “Whatever issues the Opposition parties have raised are issues created by them. We are with the farmers and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has everything under control. This rally is only a publicity stunt,” he said.

CM Devendra Fadnavis accuses oppn of shedding crocodile tears over farmers’ woes

CM Devendra Fadnavis accuses oppn of shedding crocodile tears over farmers’ woes

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis today accused the opposition of shedding “crocodile tears” over issues related to farmers and claimed that the Congress and the NCP did not do enough for them when in power.

Fadnavis’ comments came on the first day of the state Legislature’s two-week-long winter session in Nagpur, the second capital of Maharashtra, in response to the opposition parties’ criticism that his government has failed to alleviate the woes of cultivators.

As the Assembly session began, Leader of Opposition Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil alleged that the BJP-Shiv Sena government in the state was a huge failure and that it faulted in the implementation of loan waiver scheme.

Responding to it, Fadnavis said, “The so called concerns of Congress and NCP are nothing but ‘magarmach ke aansoo’. It is a false concern, infact, the Congress and NCP government had largely disappointed farmers in the state.” He said the package for Vidarbha announced during the previous Congress-NCP government had hardly benefited the farmers.

The Congress and the NCP did not help farmers when they were in power, he said.
Fadnavis said he would compare the performance of the earlier Congress-NCP rule with that of his government.

Vikhe Patil alleged that state government has made several mistakes in the farm loan waiver implementation.

“The figures have gone wrong, the company appointed for the processing of data has also made several mistakes,” he said.

“The loan waiver announcement was made in June and till date there is no sufficient data to prove how many farmers have actually received benefits of the scheme,” the Congress leader said.

Later, BJP minister Ram Shinde told reporters outside the Assembly that on the first day of the session, the House members always pay tributes to the departed leaders.
“The opposition leaders sidelined it and came up with farmers’ issues. This is an unfair practice,” he said.

Devendra Fadnavis govt may face fury over farm distress during winter session

मुख्यमंत्री देवेंद्र फडणवीस Devendra Fadnavis

The winter session of Maharashtra legislature begins in Nagpur from today , amid protests over farm distress and delayed implementation of the state’s farm loan waiver.

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is likely to face challenges from the opposition Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) as well as ally Shiv Sena over distress in the farm sector during the 10-day session that ends on 22 December.

Vidarbha Rajya Andolan Samiti (VRAS), an organization demanding a separate state of Vidarbha, has called for a Vidarbha bandh (shutdown) on the first day of the session to protest against the BJP-led government’s failure to address the statehood demand. Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, who is from Nagpur in Vidarbha, supported the demand earlier but has lately put the ball in the centre’s court.

The Rs34,022 crore farm loan waiver that Fadnavis announced on 24 June became controversial for its slow implementation and discrepancies in lists of beneficiaries.

Last week, Fadnavis tweeted that the government had released Rs19,537 crore to the banks in loan waiver benefits to more than 4.1 million farmers till 8 December. The government has identified 5.6 million farmers as those eligible beneficiaries of loan waiver, one-time settlement, incentive for timely repayment of loans, and restructuring of loans.

Fadnavis also told a meeting of the state level bankers committee which is a joint forum of all banks to form coordination teams and sort out the problems.

However, the opposition has rejected these figures, asking the government to release the names of farmers who have received the benefits.

The NCP launched a ‘Halla Bol’ protest in Vidarbha on 1 December to highlight the failures of the Fadnavis government, including the “non-implementation” of loan waiver. On 12 December, NCP chief Sharad Pawar will lead a Congress-NCP protest march to the legislature building in Nagpur over farm distress.

Opposition parties expect to set the tone of the winter session by mobilizing a large crowd of farmers on the second day. A BJP minister, who did not want to be named, said a big turnout for the protest could be embarrassing for the government, in particular for Fadnavis. Senior NCP leaders have virtually camped in Vidarbha over the last 10 days to build the tempo and generate farmers’ support for the protest march.

According to Maharashtra parliamentary affairs minister Girish Bapat, 13 government bills and 11 ordinances will be taken up during the winter session.

13 new Bills to be tabled in Nagpur winter session of Maharashtra assembly

13 new Bills to be tabled in winter session of Maha assembly

Nagpur: The Nagpur winter session of Maharashtra Legislature will be held for two weeks beginning December 11, wherein 13 new Bills would be tabled, Maharashtra minister Girish Bapat said today.

“Thirteen new bills will be introduced in both the Houses during the two weeks of the state Legislature starting December 11. Besides, 11 ordinances will also be tabled for the approval of the House, as decided by the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) today,” the Minister for Parliament Affairs told reporters here.

Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council, Dhananjay Munde, demanded that the session be held for a period of four weeks for discussion over several serious issues concerning Vidarbha.

“There should be a debate on the action report of the Kelkar committee, which has been appointed to find out the regional imbalance of development,” he said.

“This session will be held in the backward Vidarbha region and hence this debate is needed. There was a debate on (Vijay) Kelkar committee report during the winter session in 2014 in Nagpur,” he added.

Responding to Munde’s demand, Bapat said the BAC will meet once again on December 20 and the final decision on the extension of the session will be taken.

Conduct polls with ballot paper, Mayawati challenges BJP – Nagpur winter session News

Conduct polls with ballot paper, Mayawati challenges BJP - Nagpur winter session News

Nagpur winter session News: BSP chief Mayawati on Sunday challenged the BJP to conduct Vidhan Sabha and Lok Sabha elections on ballot paper instead of electronic voting machines (EVM).

Addressing a rally at Nagpur, Mayawati said, “If BJP thinks that they are honest and transparent then they should conduct all the upcoming elections in the country with ballot paper instead of EVM.”

She said that the BJP’s silence on the issue showed that EVMs had irregularities in elections that were conducted in various parts of India since 2014.

Mayawati claimed that the BSP had to suffer heavy losses in elections to the Lok Sabha in 2014 as well as the assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh in 2017 due to these irregularities.

Further attacking the BJP and the RSS, Mayawati said that dalits, tribals, OBCs and minorities were facing castiest, religious and communal attitude from the so-called thekedars (custodians)of the Hindu religion.

“It was due this attitude that Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar along with lakhs of his followers had to embrace Buddhism. He was not against Hinduism but he was against the inequality meted out,” Mayawati said.

She warned the BJP and the RSS that if this attitude towards the backward sections of society didn’t change, she along with crores of others would embrace Buddhism.

Asking her party cadre to be ready for polls, Mayawati said that the BJP would start constructing the Ram Mandir just before the Lok Sabha elections to hide their administrative failure at the state and Centre.

She added that the BJP would play the “nationalism” card as well to garner votes.

Gadkari said seaplanes will give a big push for regional connectivity.

“Till Independence 71 airports in the country were available for scheduled operations. Since Udaan scheme we are looking at 80 destinations in two rounds (phases),” Gadkari said adding that they are also planning seaplane service from Delhi to Agra.

SpiceJet and Setouchi Holdings have been working closely for over six months to explore opportunities for small ten and fourteen seater amphibious and land plane operations to provide air connectivity to smaller towns and cities of India, particularly the ones that remained unconnected due to infrastructural challenges.

According to Ajay Singh, CMD, SpiceJet all these seaplanes are DGCA approved.

Amphibious planes are reliable, tough, and resilient and can take off and land from places that do not have landing strips or runways but have water bodies.

Today’s trial was the second phase of trials for the amphibious aircraft. Under the first phase, trials of the land plane were conducted in Nagpur and Guwahati.

Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra regions in North East, Andamans, Lakshadweep are among few destinations that are being evaluated for amphibious plane operations.

Aviation is the fastest growing industry in India in terms of passenger traffic said Aviation Minister, Raju. He also said demonstration of seaplanes will lead to a flurry of travel activity and enhance passenger traffic.

India is the third largest aviation market in terms of domestic passenger traffic and fourth in the world.

State Congress invites Rahul Gandhi to attend Nagpur rally winter session

State Congress invites Rahul Gandhi to attend Nagpur rally winter session

Nagpur: Ashok Chavan, Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee president, on Wednesday invited party vice-president Rahul Gandhi to attend its December 12 rally in Nagpur during the State Assembly’s winter session.

Congress sources said that Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar is also likely to attend the joint opposition rally.

A senior Congress leader said, “He [Ashok Chavan] has spoken to Rahul Gandhi and invited him to the rally. His presence would encourage the party workers and we hope he can spare some time from the Gujarat election campaign.”

Earlier, the NCP and the Congress had planned to take out separate rallies outside the Vidhan Bhavan in Nagpur on December 11 and December 13 respectively. The parties wanted to protest against the State government’s anti-farmer policies and its failure to implement a complete farm loan waiver.

If the joint rally goes according to plan, Mr. Gandhi and Mr. Pawar would be sharing the stage at a protest rally for the first time.

The Congress leader said, “Mr. Gandhi is all set to become the president of our party and his presence at the rally will boost the morale of the party cadre in Vidarbha.”

Nagpur Legislative Council election: BJP’s Prasad Lad wins with 209 votes

Nagpur Legislative Council election BJP’s Prasad Lad wins with 209 votes

Nagpur: BJP candidate Prasad Lad bagged the Legislative Council seat Thursday winning 209 out of the total 288 votes. Congress-NCP candidate Dilip Mane polled only 73 votes. With 10 Congress-NCP votes going to Lad, cracks within the Opposition are out in the open, especially ahead of the Winter Session of the state legislature commencing in Nagpur on December 11.

The Legislative Council election was necessitated following the resignation of senior leader Narayan Rane from the Congress and as an MLC a few months ago. The BJP fielded Lad after eliciting support from the Shiv Sena, which was vehemently opposed to Rane’s candidature.

The election for the MLC seat had appeared one-sided from the very beginning, as the BJP candidate, backed by the Sena, already had 185 secured votes. Lad, however, elicited support from 10 Congress-NCP MLAs too, besides 14 votes from smaller parties and independents.

All eyes were on the Opposition unity to see if the Congress and the NCP with their 83 votes would be able to keep their flock together. Almost 24 hours ahead of the polling, top leadership of the Congress and the NCP convened a meeting of its legislators. Leader of the Opposition Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil and MPCC president Ashok Chavan emphasised that they should display unity by voting in favour of Mane. While two members from the MIM did not cast vote, three votes were declared invalid. Senior NCP leader Chhagan Bhujbal could not exercise his vote as he is in jail.

CM Devendra Fadnavis said, “I congratulate Prasad Lad for his thumping victory. I wish he now works harder to fulfill the aspirations of the people.”

Leaders from both the Congress and the NCP sought to underplay the developments. A Congress leader said, “It is evident that larger number of members representing the NCP has supported the BJP. We have always said the NCP is the B team of the BJP.”
NCP leaders said the result of the lone seat could not be a comment on the BJP’s strength. “Lad had personal rapport with members,” said a leader.

Sena members said party chief Uddhav Thackeray had given clear instructions to all 63 members to vote for Lad.

Future Group will be among top 10 fashion firms by FY19: Kishore Biyani

future group nagpur

Retail conglomerate Future Group, which owns fashion chains like Big Bazaar, Brand Factory and Central, will be among the top 10 global fashion companies selling about 35 crore garments by FY2019, group CEO Kishore Biyani said today.

The company, which has built an integrated warehouse with a capacity of over 30 crore garments in Nagpur, is betting big on the growing demand from fashion conscious customers and consumers’ interest for lifestyle and fashion.

Biyani said by next financial year the fashion units alone will clock total revenue of USD 3-3.5 billion (about Rs 20,000 crore). He, however, denied commenting on expected profit.

“We will be among the top 10 fashion companies in the world by FY19 manufacturing about 35 crore garments and the notable factor is that the operations are only in India, while others have global presence,” Biyani told PTI in an interview.

The company sells other brands along with its own such as John Millers, DJ&C, Converse, Clarks, Urban Yoga, Bare, Indigo Nation and Scullers, among others.

Its portfolio covers fashion categories including formal menswear, casual wear, active or sportswear, ethnic wear, denim wear, footwear and accessories for men and women.

While many of the brands have been developed by the group over a decade, the company also has exclusive licensees and joint ventures with global brands.

Without specifying any name, Biyani said the largest player in the world has a capacity of about 120 crore garments per year and the Future Group would be at 35 crore.

“The company will be looking at a revenue of USD 3-3.5 billion from the fashion segment, once we roll out in full capacity,” he added.

The top 10 global fashion retailers include Zara, H&M, Nike, Massimo Dutti, Pull & Bear and Oysho, among others.

The group’s fashion outlets, including Fashion at Big Bazaar (FBB), are run by two operating listed companies — Future Retail and Future Lifestyle Fashions Ltd.

Future Retail had reported a standalone net profit of Rs 153.16 crore for the second quarter ended September 2017. Future Lifestyle Fashions reported a consolidated net profit at Rs 30.28 crore during the same quarter.

The retail chain last month unveiled a 30-year vision, Retail 3.0, by when it plans to become Asia’s largest integrated consumer retailer by 2047 with revenue of in excess of USD 1 trillion.

2018 Harley-Davidson Softail Slim Launched Globally…!!!

2018 Harley-Davidson Softail Slim Launched Globally...!!!

Harley-Davidson has been a roll this year! One of the reasons was the brand-new Softail range for 2018. While the existing models such as the Fat Bob, Fat Boy and Street Bob saw a complete makeover, there were a few new models added as well. The latest Softail model to join the range was the Harley-Davidson Softail Slim. It was first introduced in 2012 and carries a retro design with a minimalist theme thrown in for good measure. The Softail Slim is a bike which draws inspiration from the ’40s post-war surplus Harley-Davidson Bobber bikes.

The bike stays true to its post-war heritage with fat tyres, black spokes and most importantly, minimal use of chrome. It is an all-new model from Harley and benefits from the 2018 Softail chassis that other bikes get. In comparison to the previous model, the 2018 Softail Slim loses almost 16 kg. The ground clearance has increased but the stance of the bike is low, giving it a sporty look. Then of course, the modern bits are there, which include new LED lights and Harley’s Milwaukee-Eight 107 engine. The engine is a 1,745 cc V-Twin which is air/oil cooled and makes a massive 145 Nm of torque at a very lowly 3,500 rpm. The bike gets Showa telescopic forks upfront and a mono-shock at the rear.

The seat height is a low 660 mm and the Harley-Davidson bike weighs in at 304 kg. Internationally, the bike will be available in five colors and the prices start at GBP 16,045 ( ₹ 13.93 lakh). A month ago, Harley launched four new Softail models in India and the Softail Slim could be a very addition to the line-up here.
