Mumbai : The Nariman Point branch of the State Bank of Mauritius last week filed a complaint with the Mumbai Police’s Economic Offences Wing saying cyber frauds siphoned off Rs 143 crore from its accounts According to the complaint filed on October 5, fraudsters hacked the bank’s servers to access the accounts and transferred the money to multiple accounts operated from out of India. No arrests have been made in the case.
The State Bank of Mauritius’s Nariman Point branch is located on the 15th floor of Raheja Centre. This is the third incident of such bank fraud in the last nine months, after one of City Union Bank’s branches in Chennai lost Rs 34 crore in February, and Rs 94 crore were siphoned from the Cosmos Bank’s Pune headquarters in August. Seven people were arrested in the Cosmos Bank scam, and the cops are investigating whether they were involved in the Chennai fraud as well The State Bank of Mauritius’s Nariman Point branch incharge, Prakash Narayan, refused to comment on the matter. A senior officer from the EOW said a first information report has been filed and cyber experts were helping in the probe.
“At this stage we don’t know if it’s a malware attack. The bank’s internal investigation is also on to ascertain whether an insider had helped the fraudsters,” the officer said.
