Janmashtami marks the birth anniversary of Lord Krishna, the eighth incarnation or Avatar of Vishnu, Hindu God. Also revered as Gokulashatami and Krishanashtami, the day is usually celebrated on the eighth day of the Krishna Paksha, which falls in the month of Sharavan or Bhadrapad. This year, Janmashtami will be celebrated on 18th August. Krishna was the eighth son of Vasudeva and Devaki and the foster son of Nanda and Yashoda. To celebrate the day, people observe fast throughout the day, prepare feasts, organize Dahi handi competitions, sing devotional songs, share Janmashtami wishes, quotes, and massages, and enact and enact dance-dramas based on the life of Krishna throughout the day. The largest celebration takes place in Mathura and Vrindavan; both are believed to be the native place of the god.
