Nagpur city has launched a project iRASTE (Intelligent Solutions for Road Safety through Technology and Engineering) to leverage Artificial Intelligence (Al) and help the city reduce road accident deaths by 50%. First, of its kind in India, Project iRASTE brought together Artificial Intelligence (AI) scientists and Road Engineering experts to transform Safety Engineering processes using Al. Nagpur’s “Grey spots Map system” uses Al to identify dangerous stretches on the road network in advance in order to reduce accident-causing black spots.

Drivers and conductors are being trained by the Transport Department of NMC about commuter safety. As part of iRASTE, they were trained in following traffic rules, learning driving skills, avoiding drinking and driving, checking the buses, exhibiting humble behaviour, and ensuring the safety of the driver and commuters. Additionally, they select the best drivers based on their data.
