Former Chief Justice Chandrashekhar Dharmadhikari passes away

Nagpur : Eminent Gandhian, jurist and social activist Dr Chandrashekhar Dharmadhikari passed away in Nagpur on Thursday. He was 91. A recipient of many awards including the Padma Bhushan, he had been the acting Chief Justice of Bombay High Court.

In his judgement during Emergency, he had held that apart from the Constitutional right, the right to life is a natural and human right and therefore even during Emergency people can approach courts. With this, he entertained petitions and released several detainees. During 1991-92, he served as the Chairman of Maharashtra Administrative Tribunal.

In 2014, a committee headed by him recommended to the Maharashtra government a complete ban on ‘bar girls’ in hotels and restaurants.Hailing from the family of Gandhians and legal professionals, Dharmadhikari was also the Chairman of Educational Regulatory Authority.He has written several books in Hindi, Marathi and Gujarati.
