Tenders have been floated. The last date for submission of e-bids is September 27.

Nagpur: Finally, plans to develop Ajni Railway Station as world-class have gained momentum as the Railway Land Development Authority (RLDA), a statutory authority under the Ministry of Railways, has floated tenders for the project.

The last date for submission of e-bids is September 27. After opening of the tenders, the development work would begin. The work has to be finished 3 years and four months. The estimated cost of the redevelopment project to be done in engineering procurement and construction mode is over Rs 301 crore.

There has been a long-pending demand from passengers and politicians to redevelop Ajni Station into a world-class terminus.

Green building facilities:

The entire project will have green building facilities. The new features that will be part of the Ajni Station redevelopment include a modern entrance on the eastern side with sufficient parking and a circulating area. It will have a wide road connecting to Ajni Road from near Wanjari Nagar flyover. The works include an 18-metre-wide foot over bridge (FOB) connecting the east side entrance to platforms and concourse. Currently, there is no entrance on the eastern side and there is also no FOB to cross over. A G+3 building will be constructed on the east side and later developed into a 9-storey structure.

After the upgradation, the entire project shall have green building features with facilities for reduction in energy consumption during construction as well as operations and maintenance. These are designed with passive energy saving features, which promotes usage of local materials and reuse the existing materials to the extent possible, which generates renewable energy on the Site and which reduces requirement for resources such as water, processing of generated waste, rain water harvesting, etc.

According to the plan, there will be four additional platforms apart from the existing three to handle more trains. The new platforms will not be part of the redevelopment work but their work will be taken up simultaneously with ongoing yard remodelling works by the construction wing.

It is notable that Ajni Railway Station is in the vicinity of Nagpur Railway Station on the Delhi–Chennai line. It is situated at a distance of about 2.8 km from Nagpur Railway Station. Based on the growth rate analysis and the addition of four new platforms, it is envisaged that the daily footfall in the year 2060 will be approximately 50,000 passengers. Apart from the up-gradation of the railway station, a bus terminal catering to multi-modal transport connectivity is also envisaged to be developed in phased manner. The location of Ajni station and adjoining land is most suitable for the development of a multi-modal transport hub. A Metro station already exists adjacent to the west side entrance of the Ajni Railway Station.
