In 1923, he started the Bahishkrit Hitkarini Sabha. Thousands of followers of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar and prominent political figures thronged Deekshabhoomi to celebrate his 133rd birth anniversary on Sunday.

Its purpose? Education and boosting the earnings of those not making much. He led the fight against casteism in India, starting actions like the stand against priests, the temple entry effort, and more. This day matters to the people and leaders of India alike. On April 14th every year, it’s a public holiday. Dr. Ambedkar Jayanti is a day for India to think about how far.

Who is Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar?

Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, born on April 14th, hailed from a Dalit family. He’s renowned as the Father of the Indian Constitution, championing equal rights for Dalits and the underprivileged. His educational journey led him to prestigious institutes like Elphinstone College in Mumbai Columbia University in the US, also the London School of Economics in the UK. He wasn’t just the first Indian to earn a doctorate in economics abroad but also serve­d as the principal at the Government Law College in Mumbai for several years. Not stopping there, Dr. Ambedkar was appointed India’s Minister of Law and Justice. He chaired the Constitution Drafting Committee. Finally, the Indian Constitution was adopted on January 26th, 1950. Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar is not just known as a social-political reformer but also as a beacon of equal opportunities in modern India. He was a pillar of strength for personal freedom. He openly criticized systems and societies promoting caste discrimination.

Significant Contributions of Dr. BR. Ambedkar

Dr. B. R. Ambedkar has made a remarkable impact. His fight to guard Dalit rights led him to host key events, like Equality Janta and Mook Nayaka. At independence on August 15, 1947, the Congress Government asked him to be the first Law Minister. On August 29, 1947, he took on the role of Chairman of the Constitution Drafting Committee to shape our new constitution. The Constituent Assembly adopted this constitution on November 26, 1949. Another vital contribution of his is the foundation of India’s Central Bank the Reserve Bank, due to his expertise in economics. He penned three books: “The Problem of the Rupee: Its Origin and Its Solution,” “Administration and Finance of East India Company,” and “The Evolution of Provincial Finance in British India.” His insight into the Indian economy was notable as an economist. Ambedkar Jayanti processions are carried out by his followers at DeekshaBhoomi in Nagpur and Chaitya Bhoomi in Mumbai. It is a customary for senior national figures, such as the President, Prime Minister and leaders of major political parties, to pay homage at the statue of Ambedkar at the Parliament of India in New Delhi. It is celebrated throughout the world especially by Dalits who embraced Buddhism after his example. In India, large numbers of people visit local statues commemorating Ambedkar in procession with lot of fanfare.

Over 25,000 people gather every year at midnight to celebrate jayanti with cake cutting and bursting of crackers at Samvidhan Chowk. Apart from that, events are held individually by all the Buddha Vihars in the city; one of the most prominent one being at Indora, helmed by Japanese priest Bhante Arya Nagarjun Surai Sasai, who will be addressing the devotees like every year at 9am at Deekshabhoomi. From around 5am, devotees will start pouring in at the sacred place.

Deekshabhoomi is one of the major Buddhist pilgrim centres in India. Its construction started in 1968 over four acres with quarters for monks.
