The Election Commission of India will launch a campaign to link Voter ID cards to Aadhaar cards beginning on August 1 all across India, Maharashtra Chief Election Officer (CEO) Shrikant Deshpande told reporters on Monday. Deshpande announced that Voter ID cards would be connected to Aadhaar cards in order to verify the identity of voters and verification of entries in the electoral rolls.
In a press conference held in Mumbai Deshpande announced that linking Voter IDs with an Aadhaar card will aid in identifying identification of an individual in more than one district or multiple times within the same electoral district. It was the Election Laws (Amendment) Bill that allows linkage to Aadhaar to Voter IDs approved by lawmakers in the Lok Sabha through a voice vote in December 2021.
