Nagpur: Is it legal for a cop to write “police” on his vehicle in Maharashtra? The answer is: No not at all. Police officers can’t write or display ‘POLICE’ on their private vehicles. It is illegal if police officers are displaying “POLICE“ on their private vehicles. It is only to create an impression on the enforcement agencies and the parking places management that the commuter is some policeman and they should avoid taking cognizance against him if he or she is found committing an offense.
But, it seems, police personnel in Nagpur have been violating this norm brazenly by putting the “Police” word on the vehicles.
Notably, the Maharashtra Police had recently issued a notice for all the police officers and personnel, banning them from putting up police stickers or symbols on their vehicles or motorcycles, to make sure that the police power is not abused. This decision has been issued by the State Police soon after the Bombay High Court expressed its discontent with the fact that many police officers have put up police stickers and symbols on their private vehicles, which is not authorized.
