Girls harassed during exam : Notice to Morris College management on MNS activist’s complaint

Date:

Nagpur : The Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University (RTMNU) has issued show-cause notice to the management of Vasantrao Naik Government Institute of Arts and Social Sciences, also known as Morris College, for alleged harassment of girl students during the summer exam. A complaint was lodged with vice-chancellor Dr SP Kane in this regard by a MA student Ankit Raut, who is also a member member of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) students’ wing.

He has leveled serious allegations against the college and claimed that students were harassment, inappropriately touched, abused and threatened by the invigilators during the exam.

He alleged that the incident took place because the in-charge appointed a North Indian as invigilator at the centre instead of Maharashtrian. In his complaint, Raut stated that one of the invigilators – Ravi Upadhaya – was harassing examinees. The written complaint also suggests purported ‘sexually harassment’ of girls. Raut stated that scarves of girl students were pulled off by the invigilators.

College authorities have denied the allegation and stated that Raut is making baseless charges. According to the college sources, the controversy broke out after Raut was caught possessing cell phone during exam time.

They said Raut has not stated in his complaint to VC that he was caught in possession of mobile. As per NU norms, electronic devices and gadgets are not allowed inside the exam norms and students are liable for harsh punishment in case they are found possessing them. He was asked to hand over his cell phone and continue his exam in a separate room since he was first time offender.
