Tushar Mehta appointed as Solicitor General of India

New Delhi: Additional Solicitor General Tushar Mehta has been appointed Solicitor General of India by Central Government. The post was vacant since October 20, 2017 after the resignation of Ranjit Kumar.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Senior Advocate Tushar Mehta as Solicitor General of India with effect from the date of assumption of charge of the office for a period till June 30, 2020, or until further orders.

The appointment comes after more than 11 months of the post lying vacant. Senior Advocate Ranjit Kumar had resigned from the post of Solicitor General on October 20 last year.

Tushar Mehta who hails from Gujarat has been serving as Additional Solicitor General since mid-2014 when the BJP came to power at the Centre. He has appeared for Centre in many significant cases including the challenge to Section 66A of Information Technology Act.
