Nagpur : Before leaving for the third edition of Junior Sqay World Championship, Saanya Pillai had promised to return with the gold medal.
A week later, the 14-year-old Saanya lived up to her promise and clinched the yellow metal in the prestigious three-day meet, organized by the World Martial Art Union in Korea.
Competing with 170 participants from 19 countries, Saanya rose to the occasion in style and brought laurels to the region. In the U-17 (below 54-kg) category, Saanya overcame the tough challenge from her Korean opponent to claim the gold medal.
While interacting with the media, Saanya said, “The inal against Korean girl was the toughest bout. I relied on my techniques and emerge victorious. The flexibility and kicking of the opponents were quite good. We watched their game and progressed accordingly.”
