To save fuel, many drivers leave their vehicles in neutral and coast down a slope or a flat stretch of road. However, when the potential of losing control of the vehicle grows, this is not considered a safe practise. In fact, such driving is prohibited by traffic laws. Driving in neutral gear on a slope is punishable by a fine of up to Rs 5,000.
A driver who is caught coasting in neutral gear for the first time will be fined Rs 1,000 and his or her licence will be banned for three months, according to the rules. The penalties increases to Rs 3,000 for the second offence. Previously, the penalties was only Rs Rs 500. The fine for the third offence is Rs 5000.
The authorities have appealed to citizens to avoid riding in neutral gear while on slope, because the vehicle gathers speed and can only be controlled with steering or brakes. The resistance of engine when a driving gear is engaged is missing which can be vital if vehicle needs to come to a sudden stop.
