Google’s Chrome ad blocker means the Web’s largest ad company is also now advertising’s biggest traffic cop

Google's Chrome ad blocker means the Web's largest ad company is also now advertising's biggest traffic cop

Google’s Chrome ad blocker means the Web’s largest ad company is also now advertising’s biggest traffic cop: Google, one of the dominant players in the online advertising world, may soon have even more power in that space. It is now taking on the challenge of determining what’s a good ad or a bad ad and deciding which ones the majority of Web users will see.

Google’s Chrome browser, which is used by about 60 percent of desktop and mobile Internet users, on Thursday began the process of blocking some of the Web’s most annoying ads. Those include video ads that autoplay with sound, pop-up ads with countdowns and “sticky” ads that take up a large portion of the screen no matter how far you scroll down to try to lose them.

Those types of ads do not meet new standards set by the Coalition for Better Ads, a group of Internet companies, online advertisers and publishers looking for a way to make online advertising more palatable to users. (The Washington Post is a member of the Interactive Advertising Bureau, one of the groups involved in the coalition.)

Google’s stated goal is to make the Web less infuriating to navigate. “It’s clear that annoying ads degrade what we all love about the Web,” Chrome Vice President Rahul Roy-Chowdhury said in a company blog post.

Using the coalition’s standards, Google will evaluate the advertisements on websites and rate them as acceptable or failing. Sites rated failing then have 30 days to shape up their advertising and submit themselves for reevaluation or face having their ads blocked by chrome.

Google said it has so far identified 1,500 of the Internet’s most-trafficked sites with ads that violate the new standards. About 850 of those have a failing status — meaning that they could see their ads blocked within the next 30 days.

Publishers are the most likely to take an initial hit from Google’s ad changes, said Peter Reinhardt, chief executive of the Segment customer data platform. Media companies have been more aggressive about the types of advertisements they use, he said, as Google and Facebook have tightened their hold on the digital ad industry. The two Internet giants reaped 60 percent of the country’s digital advertising dollars in 2017, according to the research firm eMarketer.

Google’s move with Chrome follows Apple’s decision in June to put features addressing online advertising into its Safari browser. However, Reinhardt said, the companies’ approaches to ad blocking are quite different. Apple’s is targeting advertisers who track users across the Web and compile data, rather than blocking the appearance of ads. Reinhardt said that since the Safari change, some advertisers’ revenue has fallen as much as 20 percent.

Google, meanwhile, is aimed at changing how websites look and behave when people are using them. It also offers an alternative to third-party ad-blockers — which often block both ads and trackers — that may be more palatable to Google and other companies that make money from advertising. By addressing the ads that Google surveys have found to be most annoying, Chrome’s tool may persuade Internet users not to take more drastic options to hide or eliminate all online ads from their screens.

An Internet free of tracking and ads is obviously not Google’s endgame. After all, the company makes most of its money through advertising — more than $95 billion last year. And while some see this as reforming the ad industry from the inside, Google is fielding criticism for the way the blocker is being implemented.

Moto Z2 Force with massive battery power now in India

Some note that the company had a lot of say in writing the standards, according to a report from the Wall Street Journal. Paul Boyle, vice president of public policy for the News Media Alliance, told the Associated Press that Google’s decision to incorporate these standards into Chrome turns the voluntary standards into de facto law.

Reinhardt said that the new Chrome feature is likely to accelerate new trends in the digital ad space, including fueling Google and Facebook’s ad duopoly. As for publishers, he said, it’s already clear that many are pushing subscriptions more heavily to offset the need for more aggressive advertising — a trend that Google’s new tool will probably encourage.

Moto Z2 Force with massive battery power now in India

Moto Z2 Force with massive battery power now in India

Lenovo-owner Motorola on Thursday launched the limited edition Moto Z2 Force smartphone bundled with a Moto “TurboPower mod pack” in India for Rs 34,999.

The limited edition Moto Z2 Force houses 2,730mAh battery while Moto “TurboPower Pack mod” comes with 3,490mAh battery. The combined battery (6,220mAh) can provide up to two days of power, the handset maker said in a statement.

The 6GB device sports an all-metal design and two 12MP primary cameras.

The smartphone comes with Moto “ShatterShield” technology and a 5.5-inch “Quad HD AMOLED” display that will not crack or shatter, the company claimed.

The polished design of the device is reinforced with the strength of 7,000-series aluminum, allowing it to withstand the wear and tear of daily usage.

“With 6GB RAM and Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor, the phone also features the fastest-possible data speeds with Gigabit LTE,” the company said in a statement.

The device bundled with Moto “TurboPower mod” is available on Flipkart and all Moto Hubs across the country from February 15.

Google rolls out new update for its Phone app, introduces chat heads feature

In the latest update for the Google Phone app, Google-supported phones will now have a chat heads feature, Android Police reports. Similar to Facebook Messenger, users will have a floating icon on their display with the assigned contact photo of the person they’re talking to.

The familiar feature originally appeared on Facebook Home back in 2013 — which was an app for Android that replaced the device’s existing home screen in order to allow you to post and view Facebook content more easily. With chat heads, you can interact with someone and also complete other tasks on your phone simultaneously.

While Google has been testing out the new feature for months, it’s now rolling out in version 17. When you’re on a call, chat heads will appear once you exit out of the call screen. You’ll then have the freedom to move it around anywhere on the display, and will still be able to see it even when you’re using other apps.

When you tap on the avatar, a menu will appear with a variety of options. You’ll be able to call, mute, put the call on speakerphone, or end it by only using the widget. There’s also the option to hide the bubble or end the call by dragging it down to the bottom of the screen.

For now, it seems there isn’t a setting in the Phone app to completely turn the setting off but Android Police did find a work-around. By going into your Settings on the app, and finding the list of apps that can “display on top of other apps,” you can disable that feature instead.

Gmail Go app is a lighter version of the Gmail app launched for devices with less than 1 GB RAM

As part of its Android application package teardown, Android Police also found support for new Real-Time Text protocol for those who are hearing or speech-impaired. With RTT, each letter you type is transmitted to the other side of the call right away — which ultimately allows the recipient to conclude what you’re typing before the message is even complete.

But it’s unclear whether or not RTT will be included with version 17 or if it will possibly be live in the future. It’s possible it could be rolling out with partial support and will fully launch in an upcoming update.

The Google Phone app is only available for the Pixel, Nexus, and Android One devices — for now. You can download the app through the Google Play Store.

Railways Holi Special Trains: Routes, Schedule And Other Latest Details

SECR cancels 35 trains without alternate arrangements

Indian Railways arm Northern Railway has announced four Holi special trains. The Northern Railway – which caters to one of the zones served by the Railways – said it will operate the Holi special trains “to clear extra rush of passengers during Holi Festival”.

The Holi festival is on March 2 this year. The additional trains will be run across Delhi, UP, Mumbai, Jammu, Jharkhand and West Bengal. The four Holi special trains services include Ramnagar-Howrah, Gorakhpur-Mumbai, Ranchi-Anand Vihar and Mumbai-Jammu.

Here are 10 things to know about the Holi special trains:

1. The Railways operates additional trains from time to time around periods marked with high demand from passengers.

2. Of the four trains announced, the Gorakhpur-Mumbai-Gorakhpur, Ranchi-Anand Vihar Terminal-Ranchi and Ramnagar-Howrah-Ramnagar will be operated on a weekly basis, according to the Northern Railway.

3. Train No. 05007/05008 will be run between Ramnagar and Howrah, 02597/02598 between Gorakhpur and Mumbai, 08617/08618 between Ranchi and Anand Vihar, and train No. 02071/02072 between Mumbai and Jammu, it said in a press release dated February 13.

4. The Ramnagar-Howrah, Mumbai-Jammu Tawi and Ranchi-Anand Vihar Holi special trains will be operated with AC 2 Tier/3 Tier coaches, among others. The Ramnagar-Howrah Holi special will include six sleeper class coaches, according to the press release. The Gorakhpur-Mumbai Holi special will comprise sixteen general class coaches.

5. The Mumbai-Jammu Tawi-Mumbai Holi special service will comprise AC superfast trains.

6. The weekly Holi special train service will depart from Ramnagar to Howrah at 6:15 p.m on four Fridays (from February 16 to March 9). In the return direction, the Howrah-Ramnagar weekly special will depart from Howrah at 8:35 am on four Sundays (from February 18 to March 11).

9. The Mumbai-Jammu Tawi-Mumbai AC superfast special train will depart from Mumbai at 6:45 am on March 2. It will depart from Jammu Tawi to Mumbai at 7:25 am on March 4.

10. In Budget 2018, Railways’ capital expenditure has been pegged at Rs. 1,48,528 crore for financial year 2018-19. “Strengthening the railway network and enhancing Railways’ carrying capacity has been a major focus of the Government… A large part of the Capex is devoted to capacity creation. 18,000 kilometers of doubling, third and fourth line works and 5000 kilometers of gauge conversion would eliminate capacity constraints and transform almost entire network into Broad Gauge,” Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had said while unveiling the Budget for 2018-19.

NMC plans to build 3rd STP

NMC plans to build 3rd STP

Nagpur: Even though one sewage treatment plant (STP) having a capacity of 130 million liters per day (MLD) is functioning and another 200 MLD will be commissioned soon, sewage is still flowing in Nag River. The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has therefore decided to build a third STP or augment the capacity of the second one.

A source in the NMC said that the state government had made it clear to National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) that it will not get much raw water from Gosikhurd for its 2,320 MW Mouda plant. “Some operations of thermal plant have to be done by using raw water but tertiary treated waste water can be used for most operations. We expect NTPC to approach us soon,” he added.

NMC and Mahagenco had constructed a 130 MLD STP at Bhandewadi. The tertiary treated waste water is supplied to Koradi thermal power station (KTPS) of Mahagenco. Agreement has been signed between Mahagenco, NMC and its concessionaire for sale of another 150 MLD from the 200 MLD under construction STP. This leaves 50 MLD treated water unsold.

“Even when both the STPs become functional, Nag river still would have 100 MLD untreated sewage. If zero pollution load is to be achieved another 100 MLD plant will have to set up,” said the source.

According to the official, NMC will first ask the concessionaire for the 200 MLD STP to augment the capacity of its plant by another 100 MLD. “We will ask it to be done at 2014 prices. If he agrees, it will be great otherwise we will go in for tender process. This will, however, delay the project by a year,” he further said.

The NTPC had been approached by NMC for sale of water from the 200 MLD plant. “However, unlike Mahagenco, the central entity refused to bear the cost of the STP. Moreover, Koradi is not very far from Bhandewadi. But Mouda is 35 km from the STP. NTPC was therefore reluctant to use treated water. However, now chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and state energy minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule have told the central entity in no uncertain terms that it will have buy water from NMC. We expect them to approach us very soon,” the official said.

Plan for Rs.750cr Law University in Nagpur approved

According to the official, it would be a win-win situation for NMC when the third STP was constructed for NTPC. “At present we are getting Rs 15 crore from Mahagenco. When the third STP is completed our revenue will increase to around Rs 50 crore per year. The cost of our STPs will be recovered from royalty,” he said.

BJP President Amit Shah leads 1 lakh bikes in Haryana rally

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah on Thursday praised the Manohar Lal Khattar-led government for its “corruption-free rule in Haryana” and sent out a message that “development and scam-free governance” will be the poll plank of the party in the next year’s Lok Sabha and assembly polls.
BJP president Amit Shah leads bike rally

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah on Thursday praised the Manohar Lal Khattar-led government for its “corruption-free rule in Haryana” and sent out a message that “development and scam-free governance” will be the poll plank of the party in the next year’s Lok Sabha and assembly polls.

Addressing the BJP’s ‘Yuva Hunkar Rally’ at Pandu Pindara village of Jind district, the BJP chief promised ”sabka vikas” (inclusive development) and said the Khattar government was above caste considerations.

“In BJP’s rule, Haryana is getting R34,000 crore more funds from the Centre compared to the Congress regime. When we are asked from where is this money coming, we answer that this money always existed. Earlier, it used to go into the pockets of friends and family members of Congress leaders. Now, it is going in the state funds,” Shah said.

The BJP president, who reached the venue riding pillion on a motorcycle, alleged that previous governments in Haryana and at the Centre were involved in one scam after another, adding that it was a “huge honour” that the BJP governments in Haryana and the Centre had provided “corruption-free” administrations.

He alleged that while governments in the past had exploited people on caste lines, the Khattar government was working irrespective of caste for upliftment of the poor and farmers.

Workshop on Branding & Digital Marketing for Business Growth

Praising Haryana, the BJP chief called the state the “land of the brave”. He said the maximum number of martyrs who had died fighting for the country belonged to Haryana, and that the state was producing a large number of sportspersons who were bringing laurels for the country in international tournaments.

Shah said the Centre had given a pro-poor Union budget that would increase life-expectancy. “Earlier, poor were dying of minor illnesses in want of treatment. Our government has introduced ~5 lakh health insurance for 10 crore families of the country. This scheme has famously been called as NaMo care,” he said.

He said the BJP was already in power in 19 states of the country, and this number would increase to 21 once the election results for two of the three north-east states that are going to the polls soon are out on March 3.

Former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda of the Congress, however, described the rally as a “flop show” and said the “thin attendance” indicated that people of Haryana were not interested in the BJP any longer.

Questioning the motive behind the rally, Hooda said Shah did not make any announcement for any section of society. He alleged that the state government had spent ₹22 crore from the exchequer on the central security forces called in for the rally.

“This was besides the expenditure on the rally, which was additional burden on the people of Haryana. The state would have benefitted had the BJP government spent this amount on the central forces for the construction of SYL canal,” he said.

Calling the rally a “sheer waste” of public money Indian National Lok Dal leader Abhay Chautala said: “How could Shah claim that chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar has given a fair and honest government when there are allegations of corruption in several departments?”

Anushka Shamra starrer Pari’s trailer released

Bollywood actor Anushka Sharma’s upcoming movie Pari’s trailer just hit the internet and it is every bit horrifying. While we had already seen her in the bruised and battered form before in the previously released screamers and posters, the trailer gives viewers a full-blown view into Anushka’s petrifying avatar. While the makers have not yet clarified whether Anushka Sharma will be doing a double role in the film, it looks like she is the vessel that the supernatural presence chooses.

Pari is Anushka’s third home production venture after NH10 and Phillauri. Directed by debutant Prosit Roy, the film also stars Rajat Kapoor and Ritabhari Chakraborty and hits the screens on March 2.

Producer Karnesh Sharma on Pari

Auto Expo 2018 ends, records total footfall of 605,175

New Delhi: The 14th edition of the Delhi Auto Expo ended on Wednesday with a total registered footfall of 605,175 and witnessed over 500 product displays from 119 exhibitors. Over 53 original vehicle manufacturers showcased over 120 existing and new products, including 22 new cars and two-wheelers, 81 products, including auto parts launches, and 18 new concept vehicles.

According to a press release issued by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufactures (Siam), there were 14 new brand launches, including Kia Motors India, India Kawasaki Motors and Cleveland CycleWerks. Apart from that, 25 electric vehicles were showcased and 11 startups marked their presence in the biennial event.

Auto Expo 2018“Auto Expo – The Motor Show 2018 is yet another milestone as a grand exposition that has built a brand image for itself over the years. It is the biggest platform for the Indian automobile industry to showcase its journey towards the future of ‘Mobility in India’, with competitive & world class products, technology & futuristic concept,” said Vishnu Mathur, director general, Siam.

“The successful completion of the Auto Expo – The Motor Show 2018 is a great achievement for the industry. We had 605,175 footfalls during this edition of the Auto Expo, as was expected. The extension of the Auto Expo by one day has been welcomed by visitors and manufacturers alike. It helped us manage the crowd efficiently, use the infrastructure optimally with no bottlenecks on roads and parking,” said Sugato Sen, deputy director general, Siam.

The preceding edition of the event, excluding the component show, recorded a total footfall of 601,914, marginally lower than this year’s footfall.

The lack of increase in footfall can be attributed to the absence of a number of globally renowned vehicle makers like Volkswager Group, Jaguar and Land Rover Ltd, Nissan India Pvt. Ltd, Ford Motor India Pvt. Ltd and Triumph Motorcycles and Eicher Motors Ltd, to name a few.

According to Siam, this year’s edition witnessed a tremendous response on social media as there were more than 1.5 lakh tweets on its official hashtag which further garnered over 4.5 billion impressions on Twitter in a span of six days.

Odisha To Sponsor Hockey India Teams For 5 Years: CM Naveen:

In its maiden attempt to support hockey at the national level, Odisha government has decided to be the sponsor of Indian hockey teams, both men and women.

At a function of Hockey India at New Delhi, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik  announced to sponsor the Indian hockey teams for the next five years.

Patnaik announced this soon after unveiling the new jersey of the Indian Hockey teams at the function today.

The logo titled ‘Odisha – India’s Best Kept Secret’ was also unveiled as Odisha has now partnered with Hockey India for the Hockey World Cup 2018.

As Odisha will be hosting the ’14th edition of the prestigious Hockey World Cup’ in November in Bhubaneswar, the State partnering with Hockey India to support the Indian team has been welcomed by sports lovers.

“It is a historic step for us to support and sponsor Indian Hockey Teams- Men and Women for the next 5 years. This is Odisha’s gift to the nation. Today, every Odia is proud that Team India will wear Odisha’s logo,” said Patnaik.

Patnaik also said that hockey in Odisha is more than a sport and it is a way of life especially in the tribal regions, where children learn to walk with hockey sticks.

“Odisha has produced India’s finest hockey talents and the State’s association with the national hockey coincides with a golden period for the sport,” Patnaik added.

Partial Solar Eclipse 2018: How Indians Can Watch This Celestial Event

Partial Solar Eclipse 2018: How Indians Can Watch This Celestial Event

Much to the delight of the sky watchers, the world will get to witness the second eclipse of the season – a partial solar eclipse or Aanshik Surya Grahan on February 15, 2018. This comes two weeks after the moon gazers enjoyed the rare celestial phenomenon of the “Super Blue Blood Moon” on January 31. In total solar eclipse, the Moon moves between the Sun and Earth, blocking out the Sun’s rays and casting a shadow on parts of Earth and this hides the sun completely for some time; but in a partial solar eclipse, the Sun, Moon and Earth are not exactly lined and the Moon only partly obscures the Sun’s disk and casts only its penumbra on Earth.

Where will the partial solar eclipse 2018?
The partial solar eclipse 2018 will be visible in southern South America, including many locations in Argentina, Chile, Paraguay, and Uruguay, and in Antarctica. It will also be visible from some areas of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

How can Indians watch the partial solar eclipse 2018?
While the partial solar eclipse will not be visible to Indians, they can enjoy the LIVE web stream of NASA that will showcase this spectacle on NASA’s website, Youtube channel and periscope @NASA.

2017 was quite a roller coaster for Kapil. First, he had a fallout with his co-stars Sunil Grover, Chandan Prabhakar, Sugandha Mishra and Ali Asgar, which further led to the low ratings of his show. Saddened by the happenings in life, Kapil resorted to alcohol, which aggravated his health and with him constantly delaying shoots, the channel decided to give him a break. Also, his debut production Firangi, which he also starred in, bombed at the Bollywood box office. But taking 2018 as a new start, Kapil is all set to make his big comeback with this television show.
As per sources, Family Time with Kapil Sharma, along with tickling funny bones will also include some entertaining and interactive games for the audience. There has also been a buzz that the series might include a segment inspired by the popular international game show, The Hollywood Squares, where contestants play the tic-tac-toe game to win cash prizes.

World’s thinnest TV now in India

After taking the top spot in the Indian smartphone market, China-based electronics and software company Xiaomi on Wednesday entered a new category with the launch of its smart thinnest TV priced at Rs 39,999. It is world,s thinnest TV.

The model that was launched here was the Mi LED Smart TV 4, a 4K set with a 55-inch frame-less display.

The launch of the TV is a first by Xiaomi outside China and the company expects to disrupt the Indian market with the “world’s thinnest LED TV offering”.

Manu Jain, managing director of Xiaomi India. Photo: Reuters
“It (TV) is the second biggest category after smartphones. We believe it is a very big opportunity for us,” said Manu Jain, vice-president, Xiaomi, and managing director, Xiaomi India.

“This market is similar to what the smartphone market was three years ago. The share of smartphones sold online was just 10%…now it is 35-40%. Also, the share of smart TVs is very small in overall TV sales. The way that we disrupted the smartphone market three years ago, today we want to disrupt the TV market. Give us a few years, we will redefine the rules of the game in the TV market,” Jain added.

The Mi LED Smart TV 4, which will be sold from 22 February, comes integrated with over 500,000 hours of content from video-on-demand providers.

60 Million Android users hit by cryptocurrency miner

“We are beginning with more than 5 lakh hours of content. Our aim is not to make money from hardware, from selling TVs; our aim is to make money from content from a long-term perspective, similar to our phones,” Jain said.

According to IDC’s (International Data Corporation) latest quarterly mobile phone tracker, Xiaomi replaced Samsung and emerged as the number one smartphone vendor in India in the quarter ended December with a threefold year-on-year increase in shipments and 26.8% market share.

“We are number one in power banks, fitness bands and smartphones in India… whether we will become number one in TV or not I really don’t know but what I know for sure is we will be able to disrupt the TV market,” Jain said.

The company is banking heavily on online channels – Flipkart, Mi.com—and its flagship Mi Home stores to push TV sales.

“Eventually. we will also think of an offline strategy. TV requires a different kind of retail; our existing retail channels are small. Even from a logistics perspective, it is different to smartphones. We will have to build separate warehousing and logistics before we think of an offline journey for TV,” Jain said, without divulging the company’s investment behind the TV’s launch.

While 95% of Xiaomi’s smartphones are made locally, the company will rely on importing the TVs.

“TV, in the beginning, we are importing. For us to start manufacturing, there are three things needed: the volume has to be good enough to make financial sense; high-end products require technology innovation and we have to see whether this kind of technology exists in India or not or if our partners are willing to come set it up here; third is quality, will things produced in India meet the same quality standards as abroad,” Jain said, adding that “similar to phones, if everything goes right, we should be able to manufacture TVs here but not right now.”

The company has products across 30-40 categories in its home market but has so far only launched phones, fitness devices, power banks, air purifiers, smart routers and a few audio products in India.

“These are a few issues why we cannot just take these products and bring them to India. Some are not designed for Indian conditions. For example, smart scooters given Indian road conditions, are unsafe. We would not want to launch it unless we customise it for Indian road conditions. If we were to import smart scooters, (given the import duty) the price will be double. Given all these things, not every product that we have in China, we can bring here. But the aim is to build India-specific products or customise them and bring them here,” Jain said.

Apart from the TV, Xiaomi on Wednesday also launched two smartphones—the Redmi Note 5 starting at Rs9,999 and Redmi Note 5 Pro starting at Rs13,999.

60 Million Android users hit by cryptocurrency miner

NEW DELHI: A new malware on Android is allowing users to use their devices to drive-by cryptocurrency mining campaign, according to Malwarebytes. The blog reveals that this is one of the biggest operation which is only attacking mobile users. The researches revealed that more than 60 million visitors have visited the malicious domains.

The malicious websites and apps which are directing Android users to some websites that are set up for mining the cryptocurrency. The blog further reveals that total five cryptocurrency mining websites get a total of 800,000 visits a day. This is the part of the cybercrime that has been going on since November last year.

The research blog also highlights that the attackers have great advantage in attacking mobile users. Mobile users in general don’t use any kind of security applications or web filtering and they also don’t have any warning software.

In the blog post, the researchers claims, “While Android users may be redirected from regular browsing, we believe that infected apps containing ad modules are loading similar chains leading to this cryptomining page. This is unfortunately common in the Android ecosystem, especially with so-called “free” apps.”

The researchers also suggest that this malicious cryptocurrency mining informs that visitors that they are being redirected to the websites which are used to mine cryptocurrency which is then used to pay for server traffic. After this a captcha code is sent to verify which is same for all the users.

The blog adds, “We identified several identical domains all using the same CAPTCHA code, and yet having different Coinhive site keys (see our indicators of compromise for the full details). The first one was registered in late November 2017, and new domains have been created since then, always with the same template.”

The researchers concluded, “The threat landscape has changed dramatically over the past few months, with many actors jumping on the cryptocurrency bandwagon. Malware-based miners, as well as their web-based counterparts, are booming and offering online criminals new revenue sources.”

Observatory Spots Elon Musk’s Tesla Roadster Zooming Through Space

Fly, Starman, fly! The Tesla Roadster and its mannequin driver, that launched into spaceaboard SpaceX‘s first Falcon Heavy rocket on Tuesday (Feb. 6), has been spotted zipping through space by a telescope on the ground. And we can’t stop watching it!

Yesterday (Feb. 8), Gianluca Masi of the Virtual Telescope Project and Michael Schwartz of the Tenagra Observatory joined forces to make a direct observation of the rocket payload. The car and its spacesuit-wearing driver named “Starman” were launched from the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida, and have captured the attention of people all over the world.

The new observation of the Roadster, obtained by a robotically controlled telescope at the Tenagra Observatory in Arizona (a participating observatory in the Virtual Telescope Porject), shows the car moving across the night sky. In its current orbit around the sun, the car will travel between 91.3 million and 161.5 million miles (147 million and 260 million kilometers) from the star, according to a statement from the Virtual Telescope Project. (We set the zoomed-in views to the rockin’ song “Here to Mars” by the band Coheed and Cambria) [In Photos: SpaceX’s 1st Falcon Heavy Rocket Test Launch Success!]

Observatory Spots Elon Musk's Tesla Roadster Zooming Through SpaceThe statement goes on to say that Masi and Schwartz were able to pinpoint the the car’s location by using data generated by the Solar Systems Dynamics Laboratory at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL).

NASA designated the car “Tesla Roadster (Starman, 2018-017A),” and said that it is on a heliocentric orbit with a perihelion (minimum distance from the sun) of 0.99 astronomical units (AU), or about 92 million miles (148 million km). The car’s aphelion (farthest distance from the sun) is about 1.7 AU, or about 158 million miles (254 million km). However, the car’s course will be hard to predict in the future due to “unmodelled solar pressure, thermal radiation, or outgassing acceleration that are not yet characterized,” according to JPL.

It was the first demonstration flight for the SpaceX megarocket. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, who owned the car, had said previously that he felt there was a high likelihood of the rocket malfunctioning or exploding. In a tweet, former NASA deputy administrator Lori Garver said she was told by a SpaceX vice president that the Tesla Roadster payload was the backup after NASA, the U.S. Air Force and others declined to fly a satellite for free atop the untested rocket.

The car was originally intended to be inserted into an orbit that would fly closer to Mars, but the third engine burn of the Falcon Heavy upper stage “exceeded” that orbit, according to Musk.
Regardless of intention, the Roadster has inspired millions of people to look up.

MS Dhoni 1st Indian Wicketkeeper to effect 400 ODI dismissals.

MS Dhoni 1st Indian Wicketkeeper to effect 400 ODI dismissals.

Indian wicket keeper-batsman MS Dhoni is revered as the finest wicket keeper of his era. When Dhoni had started playing cricket, the cricket fraternity only hailed him as a hard hitting batsman. And now, almost a decade and a half down the line, he is revered as the best in the business behind the stumps. In the ongoing ODI match against South Africa at Newlands, Cape Town, MS Dhoni registered his 400th ODI dismissal.

Dhoni added yet another quick stumping to his illustrious shelf of dismissals. He stumped the opposition skipper Aiden Markram on 32 to reach the coveted milestone. The action perspired in the 17th over of the South African run chase. Aiden Markram and JP Duminy had started threatening to take the game away from the hands of the Indian side after the early dismissal of Hashim Amla. Duminy and Markram had steadied the ship with a 78-run stand for the second wicket.

In the 17th over of the match, when Kuldeep Yadav came in to bowl, Markram looked like he had done his homework about the bowler. Kuldeep tossed the ball up and Markram went ahead with the walk down the pitch. At first, he thought it would turn away, and later felt that the ball would come in.

Basically, the South African skipper had his bases covered to ensure that he plays the ball irrespective of which way the ball turns. However, he ended up missing the shot altogether. MS Dhoni, who is lightning fast behind the stumps, never needs a second invitation in such cases. He was quick to dislodge the stumps and had the stumping to his name.
Earlier in the game, the Indian team arrived in to the match riding on a 2-0 lead in the six match series. Batting first, India posted a mammoth total of 303/6 on the board in their stipulated 50 overs. The star of the innings was the Indian captain, Virat Kohli, who smashed an unbeaten 160 off 159 deliveries.

If India wins this game, they will have an unassailable lead of 3-0 in the 6-match series. By the look of things, the way Indians are bowling and the way MS Dhoni is guiding the bowlers, this looks very much achievable. For now, the fans are drooling over the swagger of the former Indian captain and how he completed his 400 ODI dismissals.

SpaceX Is Launching Its First Internet Satellites This Week

SpaceX Is Launching Its First Internet Satellites This Week

Three years ago, SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk unveiled a project that would work to build the world’s first global internet satellite network. If reports and tweets on the matter are correct, the company’s Starlink network will launch its first prototype global internet satellites into orbit on February 17. The Microsat 2a and 2b satellites will reportedly be included as secondary payloads on the company’s next Falcon 9 launch.

SpaceX has not officially confirmed that the Starlink prototypes are on board; only that the launch will include a 1360 kg (3000 lb) radar observation satellite, called Paz, from the Spanish company hisdeSAT.

SpaceX has been keeping Starlink development tightly under wraps thanks to stiff competition, most notably from OneWeb, which has a partnership with SpaceX rival Jeff Bezos of Blue Origin. OneWeb is expecting to launch the first of its test satellites later in 2018, with plans to begin preliminary operations in 2019.

In previous filings with the FCC, Patricia Cooper, SpaceX’s vice president for satellite government affairs, explained that developing a satellite system is “highly proprietary and may take several years to finalize, during which time the operators hold details as highly confidential for obvious competitive reasons.” It is no surprise that SpaceX is continuing to play its Starlink cards so close to its chest.

SpaceX has filed documents with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) indicating that Starlink will have a number of ground stations, including the project’s headquarters in Redmond, Washington; a station in Brewster, Washington; and another at SpaceX’s headquarters in Hawthorne, California. Other facilities and ground stations will reportedly find their way to two spots in Texas and Tesla’s headquarters in Fremont, California.

The race toward establishing the world’s first global internet network is likely going to heat up as details begin to become public. Internet connectivity has become an integral part of modern culture, to which far too many people in the world still do not have access. Such a network will be an important part of upgrading the world, and the first company to set it up could hold the upper hand.

The world celebrates Radio Day today

Radio Day

Today is World Radio Day, a day set aside to celebrate radio, why we love it and why we need it now, more than ever. A day to remember the unique power of radio to touch lives and bring people together across every corner of the globe. It was proclaimed on 3 November 2011 by UNESCO’s 36th General Conference after originally being proposed by the Kingdom of Spain.

Following a request from the Spanish Radio Academy, on 20 September 2010, the Kingdom of Spain proposed that the UNESCO Executive Board include an agenda item on the proclamation of a World Radio Day. UNESCO’s Executive Board approved the agenda item in its provisional agenda, for the proclamation of a “World Radio Day” on 29 September 2011.

The Board recommended to the UNESCO 36th session of the General Conference that it proclaim a World Radio Day at its 36th session, and that this day be celebrated by UNESCO on 13 February, the anniversary of the day the United Nations established United Nations Radio in 1946. It also invited all United Nations Member States, organizations of the United Nations system and other international and regional organizations, professional associations and broadcasting unions, as well as civil society, including non-governmental organizations and individuals, to duly celebrate World Radio Day, in the way that each considers most adequate.

The Board further requested that UNESCO’s Director-General brought the resolution to the attention of the Secretary-General of the United Nations so that World Radio Day could be endorsed by the General Assembly and celebrated by the whole system. The matter was subsequently treated by UNESCO’s General Conference, which adopted resolution contained in the file 36 C/63. World Radio Day was thus unanimously proclaimed by all Member States of UNESCO in November 2011.

In December 2012, The General Assembly of the UN endorsed the proclamation of World Radio Day, thereby becoming a Day to be celebrated by all UN agencies, funds and programmes and their partners through File A/RES/67/124. Various radio industry bodies around the world are supporting the initiative by encouraging stations in developed countries to assist those in the developing world. At UNESCO, the consultation, proclamation and celebrations were handled by Mirta Lourenco, Chief of the Sector for Media Development.

World_Radio_DayThis year’s theme is “Radio and Sports”. As we look forward to a year of momentous sporting events that have the ability to unite the hearts and minds of people everywhere, World Radio Day 2018 will celebrate the traditional sports that connect us to our cultural heritage, the grassroots sports that anchor us within our communities and the inspiring stories that challenge gender stereotypes and provide positive role models for young people around the world.

The theme for 2018 is all about the alliance of sport and radio as a force for civic participation and development as well as for celebrating humanity in its diversity. World Radio Day 2018 celebrates radio’s critical function in shaping this alliance, by providing a platform for radio stations, and listeners alike, to construct their programs and conversations around Radio and Sports. The sub-themes are: Radio and Sports build and unite communities; Radio and Sports inspire participation and inclusion; Radio fosters goodwill and inspires humanity; how radio impacts on our lives. We may not readily admit it, but the radio has been a huge part of man’s life and, for over 100 years, has been a vehicle for development in communications and communal education and it is time to celebrate one of man’s greatest gift to man.

All exams on Aug 10, 11 cancelled by RTMNU due to heavy rain

RTMNU fails to give honorarium for ‘Earn and Learn’ scheme: Nearly two hundred students of Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University (RTMNU) have been deprived of their honorarium for the work done under the ‘Earn and Learn’ Scheme. Once again they have to face the problem. 200 students in 2017 were selected while in 105 in 2016. The students had demanded that all the students should get work who have applied under this scheme.

Readily, the Nagpur University released three list under which the students were given work. No doubt the university promptly gave work to the students but failed to give honorarium. Every year the students are given honorarium late. Under this scheme for 3 hours work students are paid Rs 150 per day. The students work in various department of university as well as law college. The students of the previous batch had demanded that their honorarium be hiked.

Nagpur University’s Students Development Department’s Director Dilip Kawadkar said that this year more students were taken under this scheme and so the file was returned by the Finance Department and once again it was sent back to the department. And now soon the students will be given honorarium. Students should not worry as they will soon be given honorarium, he added.

Over a billion smartphones to have facial recognition in 2020

Over a billion smartphones to have facial recognition in 2020

Facial recognition technology from Apple and Samsung will prompt other manufacturers to include the feature in their devices, a report said on Thursday, adding that one billion smartphones will have some form of a facial recognition for unlock solution in 2020. According to a report by market research company Counterpoint Research, this development could lead to facial recognition becoming the de-facto standard for unlocking phones and the gradual elimination of fingerprint sensors in smartphones.
“The diffusion of facial recognition technology into lower tier price bands will be faster than any other flagship feature due to 2D facial recognition being native on the Android platform,” said Pavel Naiya, Senior Analyst at Counterpoint Research.
“However, according to our estimates, close to 60 percent of all smartphones with facial recognition will use 3D technology in 2020. Data collected from multiple 3D sensors will assist emerging technologies like Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality and Artificial Intelligence to widen their use cases,” he added.

Mind-reading tech can tell which song you are listening to!

When talking about biometrics in terms of security and convenience, the firm found that convenience is generally more important than security to most consumers. “There are certainly situations where looking directly at a smartphone will be inconvenient, such as when walking briskly along a crowded street”, Peter Richardson, Research Director at Counterpoint Research, added.
“In such cases, a fingerprint sensor may well be more convenient and quicker as it does not require the user to look directly at the device and could even be unlocked as it is being removed from the user’s pocket or bag,” Richardson added.
“Face ID is well-suited for applications that require higher security, such as mobile payments, and where speed is not necessarily of essence. In such cases, consumers may be happy to wait longer, say 2-3 seconds, in return for a much higher level of security,” added Richardson.
Even though companies have been working on contactless authentication, predominantly to accommodate larger screens, Counterpoint Research said that the fingerprint sensor is far from dead. Counterpoint’s Component Tracker estimated that more than a billion smartphones sporting fingerprint sensors will be shipped in 2018

Instagram is testing screenshot alerts for stories

Instagram is testing screenshot alerts for stories

Instagram is testing a feature that will show users when someone else takes a screenshot of their story. Users included in the test are getting a warning that the next time they take a screenshot of a friend’s story the friend will be able to see it, as shown below:

Instagram is testing screenshot alerts for stories
And users who are participating in the test can see who took a screenshot of their story by going to the list of story viewers and seeing a new camera shutter logo next to anyone who took a screenshot of their photo. To be clear, creators won’t get a specific notification when someone takes a screenshot of their story, it will only show up in their list of story viewers.

Instagram is testing screenshot alerts for storiesIn a statement provided Instagram acknowledged the test, saying “we are always testing ways to improve the experience on Instagram and make it easier to share any moment with the people who matter to you.”

Instagram is likely using this test to see if the feature has any noticeable impact on engagement, before deciding whether or not they’ll roll it out to all users. For example, there’s a chance that some users may end up watching less stories over time if they aren’t able to take screenshots without notifying the creator.

Prior to this test the only screenshot notifications on Instagram were when someone took a screenshot of a private direct message. Anyone could take a screenshot of someone’s photo or story without notifying the creator. Notably, users can rewatch stories as many times as they want within 24 hours, with the creator unable to see exactly how many times one person watched it.

If rolled out, this feature would essentially align Instagram with Snapchat in terms of how the platform deals with screenshots. Any screenshot of a direct message triggers a notification to the sender, but a screenshot of a story will just result in a notation being placed next to the offender’s name in the viewer analytics tab.

India could lose 2021 ICC Champions Trophy hosting rights if Government does not give tax exemptions

2021 ICC Champions Trophy

India could lose the hosting rights of the 2021 ICC Champions Trophy and any future International Cricket Council-organised tournaments if the Indian government does not provide tax exemptions to the world governing body.
The ICC, in a meeting on Friday, expressed its concern about the absence of a tax exemption in India, which it said was a “standard practice for major sporting events” around the world.

In a press release, the ICC said that it will continue to talk to the Indian government regarding the matter along with the Board of Control for Cricket in India. However, it directed the ICC management “to explore alternative host countries in a similar time zone for the 2021 ICC Champions Trophy”.
This means that India could lose the tournament’s hosting rights for 2021 ICC Champions Trophy to neighboring countries such as Sri Lanka or Bangladesh.
“The Indian government used to give tax exemption to the ICC till the 2011 World Cup,” a BCCI official told The Times of India. “However, in the case of the 2016 World Twenty20, which was held in India, the government refused to give any tax exemption. The ICC and its media rights holder Star Sports made repeated requests in this regard, but the tax authorities didn’t budge. Star Sports thus had to pay 10% TDS on its media rights income for the event.”

However, another unnamed BCCI official told The Indian Express that this was “nothing but an attempt to pressurise the Indian government” and warned that the ICC “may regret taking any decision that may be detrimental to BCCI’s interests”.
The same official then targeted ICC chairman Shashank Manohar, who in his capacity as BCCI president in 2009 had moved the Indian Premier League to South Africa in 2009. “The comment made by him then, that the IPL was shifted out due to the attitude of the Indian government, was made against the will of the BCCI’s Working Committee and was one of many blunders of Mr Manohar that cost the BCCI deeply,” the official said.
“It would be another blunder by another organisation being headed by the same man to unnecessarily rub the Indian government the wrong way, especially after the support that the government extended during the conduct of the ICC World T20 in 2016,” the official added.

Modi’s scheme for pursuing PhD courses at IITs and IISc will help convert brain drain into brain gain.

Modi government is rolling out the mother of all scholarships for India’s best brains. As part of its move to stop them from taking up research scholarships abroad, the Cabinet has cleared the PM Research Fellowships (PMRF) for students of higher education institutions like the IITs, IISERs and NITs, which will also be the country’s most lavish paid scholarships to date.

Lavish it is. The PMRF includes monthly scholarships of Rs 70,000 to Rs 80,000 and annual research grants of Rs 2 lakh for select scholars. The Centre has approved an allocation of Rs 1,650 crore for these fellows to be spent over three years.

“The scheme will go a long way in tapping the talent pool of the country for carrying out research indigenously in cutting edge science and technology domains,” Union human resource development minister Prakash Javadekar said.

“Research under the scheme will address our national priorities at the one hand and shortage of quality faculty in premier educational institutions of the country on the other. It will help convert brain drain into brain gain,” he said.

The minimum eligibility for aspirants will be a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 8.5. The minister said that the scheme will be rolled out from the 2018-19 academic session.

Under the scheme, students who have completed or are in final year of B.Tech or integrated M.Tech or M.Sc in science and technology streams at IISc, IITs, NITs, IISERs, IIITs will be offered direct admissions in PhD programmes in IITs and IISc.

Students, who would fulfil the eligibility criteria and get shortlisted, would be offered a fellowship of Rs 70,000 a month during the first two years, Rs 75,000 per month during the third year and Rs 80,000 per month during the fourth and the fifth year.

A research grant of Rs two lakh each will also be provided to the fellows for a period of five years to cover their foreign travel expenses for presenting research papers at international conferences and seminars.

My speech on fake accounts edited out of context: Cong leader Ramya slams BJP

‘My speech on fake accounts edited out of context’ Cong leader Ramya slams BJP

On Tuesday, the BJP had released a video in which Ramya is seen talking about fake social media accounts to party workers.

Reacting strongly to the viral video in which Karnataka Congress Social Media head Ramya is seen talking about fake social media accounts, the actor-turned-politician said that the “video has been edited” for the BJP’s convenience.

In a series of tweets, She went on to explain that the video had been edited out of context.

“I was explaining the difference between bots, fake accounts and multiple accounts to a question from the audience. To the question, I had answered saying that if they wanted to express their own view then to do so on their individual handle, not on an official account,” She said.
In the video, Ramya is seen saying, “So today, you will create three accounts in the names of others. Fake accounts are bots, meaning robots or machines. One person can have multiple accounts. There is nothing wrong with that. I have my personal account on Facebook and also another page.”

On Tuesday evening, BJP social media convenor Balaji Srinivas had tweeted the video stating that Ramya had advised Congress workers to create fake accounts.

“Sandalwood queen Ramya explains how to create fake accounts in social media,” Balaji Srinivas had tweeted.

On Tuesday, the BJP had released a video in which Ramya is seen talking about fake social media accounts to party workers.Ramya refuted the claims and said that the BJP was resorting to “diversion tactics” after she had called out MP Rajeev Chandrashekhar on Twitter.

On Tuesday, Ramya had tweeted a list of questions to the MP. The tweet came in the wake of the Congress-BJP Twitter war after Prime Minister Narendra Modi accused the Karnataka government of corruption.
“Here’s the full list that needs answers from you Rajeev:

1. The land that was allotted to KMF in Koramangala,

2. The SEZ land allotted in Hassan,

3. The 75 acres of land allotted near Bangalore airport,

4. The acquisition of land under the KIADB to set up a plant at Dabaspet,” Ramya had tweeted.

She went on to allege that the BJP was resorting to diversion tactics as they were unable to answer her questions, which is why they had released an edited version of the video.

Javed Akhtar has urged people to not use loudspeakers in mosques. On April 17, 2017, Sonu Nigam had described the loud sermons from the loudspeakers as hooliganism in a series of tweets.

Veteran Bollywood lyricist-scriptwriter Javed Akhtar has come out in support of playback singer Sonu Nigam, who was embroiled in a controversy for criticising the use of loudspeakers in the mosques last year.

Javed Akhtar says 'loud speakers should not be used by the mosques', supports Sonu Nigam Javed Akhtar has urged people to not use loudspeakers in mosques. He took t his Twitter account and wrote, ‘’This is to put on record that I totally agree with all those including Sonu Nigam who want that Loud speakers should not be used by the mosques and for that matter by any place of worship in residential areas. (sic).’’

On April 17, 2017, Sonu had described the loud sermons from the loudspeakers as hooliganism in a series of tweets. He had tweeted, “God bless everyone. I’m not a Muslim and I have to be woken up by the Azaan in the morning. When will this forced religiousness end in India (sic).’’
Though Sonu Nigam spoke about loudspeakers atop temples and gurudwaras too, his outburst was construed as being against ‘azaan’ and Islam. This was followed by a fatwa being issued against Nigam by Kolkata-based cleric, Syed Sha Atef Ali Al Quaderi, who asked him to shave off his head for his tweets.

Following this, the Kal Ho Naa Hosinger also quit Twitter on May 24, 2017 as his tweet against early morning azaan stirred a huge controversy. He faced flak from religious extremists for voicing his views on social media, besides a few who understood his expression about religion and patriotism.

He had said, “I quit Twitter today in defiance of this one-sided sham. Every logical, sensible patriot and humanist should. I am sorry I don’t belong to a place which spews so much venom with such Relish! A place that taints me anti-muslim in some losers’ minds.” He said he had no religion and follows his own religion choosing the best from everywhere. “Those who understand, know; those who don’t, my condolences. I don’t belong to a place where some Pseudo Intellectuals actually turn a Blind Eye to the unprecedented slap I gave to the Fatwa proclaimers on me. I am no Right Wing, No Left Wing. I respect everyone’s opinion but I guess here, you have to Belong Somewhere.”

“I hope I never need to return here to clarify, but I never say never! At this point, my pious life, needs to de-clutter. I don’t know what will be made out of these Threads of mine, and what new Controversy I’ll get in too, but this should be the last due to Twitter,’’ he had further wrote.
