Nasa delays the launch of its next-generation space telescope

Nasa delays the launch of its next-generation space telescope

NASA has delayed the launch of its next great space observatory, the James Webb Space Telescope, until no earlier than May 2020 — nearly a year later than planned — due to the need for more testing of the telescope’s intricate systems and setbacks, including tears in the tennis-court-size sun shield, the space agency announced on March 27.

Top officials said Wednesday that more time is needed to assemble and test the James Webb Space Telescope, which is considered a successor to the long-orbiting Hubble Space Telescope.

It’s the latest in a series of delays for the telescope, dating back a decade. More recently, Webb was supposed to fly this year, but last fall Nasa bumped the launch until 2019. “Simply put, we have one shot to get this right before going into space,” explained Thomas Zurbuchen, Nasa’s associate administrator of science. For such a highly complex machine designed to “look at the universe in a way that we’ve never seen it,” there can be no shortcuts, he stressed.

“All the observatory’s flight hardware is now complete; however, the issues brought to light with the spacecraft element are prompting us to take the necessary steps to refocus our efforts on the completion of this ambitious and complex observatory,” NASA Acting Administrator Robert Lightfoot said in a statement.

NASA originally hoped to launch the James Webb Space Telescope in 2018 but delayed it until 2019 last September due to delays in the observatory’s assembly.

The potential for more issues arose in February, when a report from the U.S. Government Accountability Office warned that the telescope faced a high probability of more delays that could push the telescope beyond its budget cap. In 2001, Congress assigned the telescope a cost cap of $8 billion prior to launch.

NMC to start compounding of illegal constructions in the city

NMC

Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) will start compounding of illegal constructions in the city. The civic body will give six months’ time to citizens or developers to apply for regularisation of their excess construction not in consonance with existing development control regulations. The general body has also reduced the application charges from Rs 5,000 to minimum Rs 500.

NMC office-bearers were little skeptical about utility of these directions issued by the Urban Development Department of State Government and apprehended that due to stringent conditions laid down, not more than 5 percent constructions could be regularised. Therefore, local body will frame its own rule for regularisation of excess and unauthorised constructions in the city and send it for State’s nod.

Ruling Party leader Sandip Joshi said, it is impossible for a citizen with modest means to pay Rs 5,000 application fee for the house situated in barely 500 sq ft. Therefore, NMC should not charge more than Re 1/sq ft for the houses upto 2500 sq ft while Rs 2/sq ft for the houses situated on plot size admeasuring more than 2,500 sq ft. The regularization rates for the application in respect of commercial establishments should be Rs 2/ sq ft. NMC should appoint a senior and expert officer to frame the rules for regularisation of the illegal construction in congested areas keeping in mind the ground realities of orange city. We will knock the doors of the State Government to get its nod for these regulations.

Former Mayor Pravin Datke said, the government resolution of October 7, 2017 regarding regularization of illegal construction is useless in Nagpur’s context. Only 5 percent illegal construction may regularized through this GR and hence separate rules are necessary to address cases of excess constructions within Nagpur city. NMC should appeal to State Government for special amendment in the directions. Praful Gudadhe Patil also raised the issue of old congested areas and stated that these directives would remain only on paper.

Municipal Commissioner Mudgal said, the State Government has issued GR on October 7, 2017 and it is binding on local body to announce the scheme for the compounding of the illegal construction within six months. He briefed the meeting about details of the regularisation scheme and how it is beneficial for the citizens to make their excess constructions legal by paying premium as determined by the Government.

Baggage Management Technology at Nagpur International Airport

sita baggage tracking sita baggage management

Global airlines IT services solution major SITA will provide its check-in, boarding and baggage tracking technology to Nagpur International Airport, which will allow it to handle rapidly increasing passenger traffic.

The Nagpur airport is operated under a joint venture company, MIHAN India Limited (MIL), in which Maharashtra Airport Development Company and Airports Authority of India holds 51 per cent and 49 per cent stake, respectively.

The airport is expected to accommodate up to 14 million passengers once completed in 2035, according to SITA.

As part of the new agreement announced between the two partners at the SITA Air Transport Summit in Jaipur on Friday, MIHAN will deploy SITA’s common-use technology, enabling airlines and their handling agents to access their IT applications in real-time on shared common-use equipment.

The two-day annual event concluded on Friday. SITAs common use terminal equipment (CUTE) and common use self service (CUSS) allows any airline to use any agent desk, gate position or self-service kiosk for passenger check-in and bag drop.

“These solutions will allow the Nagpur airport to cater to increasing traffic without having to invest in building additional infrastructure,” SITA vice president for Indian subcontinent, Eastern & Southern Africa, Maneesh Jaikrishna said.

At the same time, the airport authorities will be able to provide best-in-class facilities for airlines and passengers alike, he said adding the tie-up with the Nagpur Airport is part of the company’s commitment to making India not only one of the biggest aviation markets, but increasingly more efficient and passenger friendly.

According to the company, the implementation baggage tracking solution SITABagManager will help MIHAN accurately tracking passengers bags and significantly reduce the number of cases of baggage mishandling.

“As an airport operator, it is essential we have the right technologies in place to make sure the operations are highly efficient from day one and that they are future-proofed for our growth. SITAs technology no doubt will support MIHANs requirements” MIHAN senior airport director VS Mulekar said.

Maharashtra government may bring law to check copying in exams: Vinod Tawde

Copying in exams

Mumbai : The Maharashtra government said today that it will consider bringing in a law to check copying by students during exams and will also take strict action against those who leak the question papers.

School education minister Vinod Tawde made an announcement to this effect in the Legislative Council while replying to a debate, initiated by Vikram Kale (NCP), on the spate of incidents of copying in the recently held exams of Classes 10 and 12 in the state.

The minister also warned of stringent action against the officials who change the designated examination centres at the last minute.

The Maharashtra State Board every year conducts the exams of Classes 10 and 12, also referred to as the Senior Secondary Certificate (SSC) and Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examinations, respectively.

This year, there have been several complaints of students copying during the exams and the leakage of question papers.

Replying to the debate on the issue in the Upper House, Tawde said, “Strict action will be taken against the teaching and non-teaching staff found guilty of indulging in leaking question papers.”

He urged the MLCs, specially those representing the teachers constituencies, to support him in taking action against the erring teachers, even if the latter were the voters of the House members.

The minister said the government will tell the Board to print an additional set of 25,000 question papers only for the centres where the question papers have been leaked.

The government cannot change the leaked question paper sets all over the state, he said.

Tawde also said that the government will probe claims made by Kale about two candidates being made to sit side by side at an SSC exam centre in Nagpur district.

“The government will consider bringing in a separate legislation to deal with the scourge of copying during the SSC and HSC exams,” he said.

The minister said that copying during examinations was on the rise due to competition for marks, and the middlemen were taking undue advantage of the situation.

“The government will take strict action against copying during the SSC and HSC exams,” he asserted.

The legislators often make pleas for setting up examination centres close to villages, other than the already designated and approved ones, he noted.

Strict action will be taken against the Board officials who change the already designated examination centres at the last minute, he said.

From instantly registering complaints regarding haphazardly parked vehicles causing traffic jams, getting information of a towed away vehicle to finding the nearest parking spots, the app, according to Nagpur traffic police, will be a resourceful information provider for the distressed  motorists and the commuters.

The app, which is being developed by an in-house tech team of the traffic police, is expected to be launched in a week or two, across all operating systems. Though DCP traffic Chaitanya S refused to divulge anything about the concept, sources said : “The idea is to provide instant information to citizens on the go and also encourage them to be part of this citizen-police connect. The app will be comprehensive and user-friendly. During peak hours, the department receives many complaints of the traffic jams.”

“With the app, all android phone users will get updates about the congested roads and the alternate routes they can use.Besides this feature, the app will also give details of towed away vehicles.

When a vehicle is towed away, the occupant of the vehicle has to just feed in the number of the vehicle via the app and details of offence along with the address of the traffic post where the vehicle is kept will be displayed.Apart from this, to ease parking woes, commuters will get details of the nearest parking spot when they open the app and search location details through the maps.

Google Apps Are Slowly Being Blocked From Uncertified Android Devices

Google appears to be clamping down on uncertified builds of the Android Operating system. Developers are reporting that they are unable to log in to Google accounts while using unverified firmware; a move that appears to force OEMs to provide a more consistent Android experience.

Developers on unverified versions of Android have reported that they are unable to sign into Google’s services through their devices. Instead, all they get is a warning message explaining what needs to be done.

The open source nature of Android allows, in theory, just about anyone to build their own version of the operating system. Which is pretty much why every manufacturer has an in-house variation.

Google apps

However, these manufacturers are expected to comply with a set of rules set out in the Compatibility Definition Document, and then pass a Compatibility Test Suite. Doing so will allow them to pre-load Google apps suite into the device. Of course, until recently, failure to comply would simply result in nothing bad actually happening. Aside from users having to sideload the apps instead of having them pre-installed.

This move seems like a better method of exercising some control over Android, while still allowing developers and OEMs to continuing with their own customisation work. It would also clamp down on less scrupulous manufacturers who take liberties with the security of their operating system.

On the other hand, it is going to be a whole lot more troublesome for those who prefer to install the own ROMs. Seeing that every new build will have to be registered separately; not to mention the 100 device ID limit on registration.

Smriti Irani takes 'Chota Bheem' jibe at Rahul, mocks Congress for deleting its app

On Monday, Union Minister Smriti Irani took a jibe at Rahul Gandhi, saying he had asked people to delete the NaMo app, instead Congress had deleted their own app.

Smriti Irani wrote on Twitter: “Ye kya @RahulGandhi ji it seems your team is doing the opposite of what you asked for. Instead of #DeleteNaMoApp, they have deleted the Congress App itself.”

She also said: “@RahulGandhi ji, even ‘Chhota Bheem’ knows that commonly asked permission on Apps don’t tantamount to snooping.”

Firing a fresh salvo, Rahul, in a tweet alleged that the NaMo app secretly records the user’s location, audio, video, contact information and other personal data.

Earlier, the Congress Party president Rahul Gandhi equated the former to the “Big Boss who likes to spy on Indians.

The Congress president had urged people to delete the Narendra Modi app.

He also accused Prime Minister Modi of ‘forcing’ 13 lakh NCC cadets to download the mobile application.”Modi’s NaMo App secretly records audio, video, contacts of your friends and family and even tracks your location via GPS. He’s the Big Boss who likes to spy on Indians. Now he wants data on our children. 13 lakh NCC cadets are being forced to download the APP #DeleteNaMoApp,” Rahul tweeted.

The Congress party appears to have taken their app ‘With INC’ off Google PlayStore. A cursory search for the app on App Store also fails to throw up any results for the Congress app.

Anushka Sharma starrer Pari to be remade in Tamil

Anushka Sharma Pari

Actress Anushka Sharma received positive reviews for her latest release Pari. She played the role of a woman possessed by an evil spirit. Now, if latest reports are to be believed, the horror drama will be remade in Tamil. According to a source, the producers have loved the film and the announcement regarding the Tamil remake will be made soon. It is indeed good news for Anushka.

A source close to the development said, “Quality horror stories work in this market and the producers here have loved Pari. The offer on the table is a big one too and only adds to the revenue of Pari. An announcement is expected to happen as soon as the deal is locked. It is a huge success for Anushka.”

The source added, “Pari became a success because of its script and the willingness of a superstar to take a huge risk to back content that was aimed at redefining the horror genre in India. Everyone has taken notice of this gutsy decision.”

Pari, starring Anushka Sharma in the lead role, was directed by Prosit Roy. The supernatural horror film had music by Anupam Roy.

The script has a good shot at making it big in Kollywood since the industry is obsessed with the horror genre these days.

Siddharth’s Aval, a horror film that released a few months ago, turned out to be a hit at the box office.

The actress never shies away from experimenting. She has proved her versatility with many films. Pari was Anushka’s first release after marriage and her third film as a producer. Clean State Films has earlier bankrolled NH10 and Phillauri.

WhatsApp Payments Gets a New Feature, Lets You Scan QR Code to Send Money

Scan QR Code

WhatsApp updates for its Android beta testers have shown off some new features. Android beta users with WhatsApp Payments enabled will now see an option to scan QR code for payments. This is in addition to the recently added ‘Send to UPI ID’ feature, and adds more functionality to the payments function of the world’s most popular messaging app. Other WhatsApp features reported to be in the recent Android beta updates, though unfortunately disabled by default, include Advanced GIF Search and Search Stickers.

How to use WhatsApp Payments QR code scan feature

Let’s start with the new Scan QR Code option – available on WhatsApp version 2.18.93 through the Google Play Beta programme – the feature lets users make payments by scanning QR codes. WhatsApp Android beta users will need to go to Settings > Payments > New Payments > Scan QR code. You will now be directed to the QR code scanning option that will ask you to enter the amount you wish to send and it will also ask for UPI PIN for verification.

Scan QR codeAs yet another digital payments option in India, WhatsApp in February had launched its payments service in India in beta for select Android smartphones as well as iPhones. Later it added the “Send to UPI ID” feature to make it easier for users to directly send across payments to unique UPI IDs without going into conversation threads. However, the app lacked the QR code payments feature which is present in rival apps like Paytm. Now, the latest Android beta version of WhatsApp has introduced this feature.

WhatsApp Payments is the company’s first attempt at the digital payments front in India. Within a few days after launch, WhatsApp Payments had been accused of not offering a secure platform and not adhering to UPI’s interoperability characteristics. After rolling out an improved visibility feature as the Send to UPI ID button, the app now has the QR code option as well.

In separate news, as per a WABetaInfo report, WhatsApp is work on an Advanced GIF Search feature in the 2.18.93 update, but the developers have “kept it disabled for development reasons and it will be enabled in next releases.” The feature lets users search GIFs in various categories, such as Trending, LOL, Love, Sad, Happy, and Dancing.

WhatsApp is work on an Advanced GIF Search feature

The update will also include starred GIFs, as per the report. Similarly, another report said that the WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.18.90 brings Search Stickers feature that allows users to search stickers in the doodle view.

Indian Railways bets on new OMRS technology to prevent train derailment

Indian Railways will soon fit devices on tracks that are aimed at preventing derailment and break-down of trains – a step that will go a big way in enhancing passengers safety. These devices are being fitted Maharashtra and other states will get them soon, says report.

According to some officials, the Online Monitoring of Rolling Stock (OMRS) will be installed between Maharashtra’s Bhusawal and Jalgaon section as well as Wardha and Nagpur sections within a duration of one year, as part of the first phase of the execution. According to the report, the officials also claimed that with the help of this system, faults in wheels and locomotives, while the train is in operating mode, can be detected.

Under this system, microphones and sensors that record the noise that coaches and locomotives make on the tracks. The officials also said that the condition of the wheels of the coaches or any technical fault will be displayed in yellow, green and red, which will signify wheels are safe, maintenance is required and wearing out of wheels have began, respectively.

According to the report, the system, which was also tested in year 2013 will be used in the coming years. Also, 65 systems will be installed. Moreover, for the first phase of the system installation, Indian Railways has selected 25 routes across the nation, where devices will be installed and for this, the national transporter will spend an amount of Rs 113 crore, the report stated.

In addition to this, Indian Railways will also fit as many as 40 systems across various routes such as between Surat and Mumbai, and Mumbai and Roha, in its second phase of implementation. The report also claimed that the system has been examined between Delhi and Panipat. The system, which consists of one control unit, will be set up in Delhi from where the connectivity will be provided to all other zones of Indian Railways. According to Arun Arora, chief mechanical engineer in Northern Railways, with the help of OMRS, the system will detect the errors as soon as it will capture the sound of wheels.

In addition to this, recently, Piyush Goyal-led Railway Ministry has also decided to redevelop platforms across all Mumbai suburban railway stations in order to enhance safety of railway passengers across Mumbai suburban railways. India’s first bullet train between Mumbai and Ahmedabad

India’s first bullet train between Mumbai and Ahmedabad will run at a frequency of 20 minutes, Achal Khare, Managing Director, National High Speed Railway Corporation Limited (NGRCL) has said. Indian Railways ambitious bullet train project is being undertaken under the ‘Make in India’ initiative.

According to the report, Khare has said that from Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex, first bullet train will depart every 20 minutes. During peak hours, the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet-train service will run thrice an hour, while during non-peak hours, the bullet train service will run twice. The foundation stone for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet-train project was jointly led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe, last year in September. It is expected that the construction of the bullet-train project will be over by year 2022 and the train is likely to commence its service on August 15, 2022.

According to Khare, NHSRCL 24 bullet train rakes of E-5 series running on Shinkansen technology will be used for the network. In order to ensure there is free flow of services, 20 trains will be functional while the rest will be kept for emergencies. The bullet-train will comprise of many modern facilities. Initially, the bullet train will have 10 coaches, which will have seating capacity of 750 passengers. However, the number of coaches will be increased to 15 by 2033, which will have seating capacity of 1,250 passengers. Apart from comfortable seats, the bullet-train will have other features like vaccum toilets, multi- purpose room, baby toilet seats etc.

With a speed of 320 kmph, the bullet train will complete a journey between Mumbai and Ahmedabad in around 2 hours. At present, it takes around 7 hours to complete a rail journey between the two cities. En route, the bullet train will cover 12 railway stations namely, Bandra Kurla Complex, Thane, Virar, Boisar, Vapi, Bilimora, Surat, Bharuch, Baroda, Anand, Sabarmati and Ahmedabad stations.

Recently, Chief Minister of Maharashtra Devendra Fadnavis told the Legislative Council that fares of the bullet train would be comparable to existing conventional railway fares, in response to Congress’ Sanjay Dutt’s demand for a cost benefit analysis, claiming that 67 per cent of the bullet train’s route would be in Gujarat yet the financial share of Maharashtra was equal to that of Gujarat.

Khare said that with the implementation of bullet-train in the country, a lot of traffic from the roads is expected to shift to high-speed trains. He said that in order to run the bullet-train, a training institute will be set up in December 2020, where around 4,000 people will be given formal training before commissioning of the bullet train project.

Google honours 45th Chipko Movement anniversary with a doodle

Chipko Movement

Google honours 45th Chipko Movement anniversary with a doodle

Today’s ‘Google Doodle’ marks the 45th anniversary of the forest conservation initiative called the Chipko Movement.

Who doesn’t know about the famous tree-hugging movement? Chipko movement found momentum in 1970s and derived its name from the way people embraced trees symbolising protection of forest from being cut.

The word ‘Chipko’ is Hindi for ‘to stick to’ and the way people expressed solidarity with the movement was by surrounding trees and linking their hands together around it, to physically prevent them from being chopped down.

The original Chipko Movement dates back to the 18th century. A large group of people from the Bishnoi community in Rajasthan resisted felling of trees by hugging them.

In modern India, Chipko-Movement started in April 1973 in Uttar Pradesh’s Mandal village in the upper Alakananda valley. Soon it spread to other Himalayan districts of the state. The Chipko-Movement was triggered by a government decision to allot forest land to a sports goods company. Angered by the move, villagers formed circles around the trees to prevent them from being cut. The Chipko-Movement, leaded by local women, was spearheaded by Chand Chandi Prasad Bhatt and his NGO Dasholi Gram Swara Sangh.

Inspired by the success in Uttar Pradesh, the Chipko-Movement spread to other parts of the country. Some of the key figures that were part of the Chipko Movement were Dhoom Singh Negi, Bachni Devi, Gaura Devi and Sudesha Devi.

Gandhian activist Sunderlal Bahuguna gave a direction to the movement and his appeal to Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India, resulted in the ban of cutting trees.

While Nagpur District Chess Association (NDCA) will be the official host of the youth championship, the World junior meet will be conducted in Delhi.
Ths secretary of the AICF Bharat Singh Chauhan said, “We have the trust in the organizing capacity of Nagpur. They have successfully and very professionally conducted the Commonwealth Chess Championship and many National events in the past and that’s the reason we chose Nagpur as a host for the World Youth Chess Championship.”

The meet is likely to the held in October next year. Chauhan also informed that the AICF team will visit the city next month to finalize the venue.

Confirming the development and welcoming the AICF decision, Itkelwar said, “India will host its first World Youth chess meet and in the historic first the AICF allotted this prestigious event to Nagpur. This is a great honour for Nagpur that the AICF has considered us eligible to hold this important event of Fide.”

Looking at the performance of young Indian players in the World Cadet Championships, the AICF decided to bid for the youth tournament and for the first time since 1976, when the Fide started conducting World Youth championships, India will host the all-important event for the upcoming masters of 64 squares.

Young masters from around 70 chess playing countries will be seen in action during the youth meet to be held in three age categories in both the open and girls’ group. The meet will be played in the U-18, U-16 and U-14 age groups and the chess governing body will crown six world champions from this meet.

During the youth meet, the official entry of team consisted of six members and around 400 players in each category will likely to be seen making their moves in the city.

Itkelwar added: “The AICF trusted our organizing capacity before giving us a chance to become a host. I hope to see all coming together to make this a memorable event.”

Earlier in 2008, the NDCA successfully conducted the Commonwealth Chess Championships before playing host to a Grandmaster meet in 2014 and many national events. With three young minds including two-time World Cadet Chess champion Divya Deshmukh, Mrudul Dehankar and Raunak Sadhwani making waves on the chequered boxes around the globe, the World Youth meet in their own city will only bring happy news for them.

Google Chrome’s next update will stop autoplay videos from playing automatically

google

Google Chrome will soon stop automatically playing autoplay videos, according to a new note to its developers.

The update will make it so Google Chrome will only allow autoplay videos to play when they have already been muted by the user or when those videos don’t have any sound.

The developer notes say that “autoplay is now allowed only when either the media won’t play sound after the user clicks or taps on the site, or (on a desktop) if the user has previously shown an interest in media on the site.”

Android users can still autoplay videos if they’ve added the site they’re visiting to their device’s home screen, according to 9to5Google, a Google news and rumors website.

The new function will be available to all Chrome users soon through an automatic update. You can download it early here.

Google originally planned to add these changes with its Chrome 64 update, which arrived in January. That update included an option to mute autoplay videos but wouldn’t do it automatically, according to The Verge.

“Google’s additional steps will mean that autoplay videos with sound blasting out of your speakers should be a thing of the past, and you can always take the extra step of completely muting a site if you happen to click and interact and the sound turns on,” The Verge reported.

According to Mashable, Chrome 66 will also include a function that helps “websites better tailor media streaming resolution to capabilities of the device that’s accessing them.”

ISRO’s Chandrayaan-2 launch postponed as lunar mission requires more tests

Chandrayaan 2

The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has been preparing for its second lunar mission Chandrayaan-2 for some time now. While all eyes have been on the launch date, it looks like ISRO has made some changes to its plans and postponed the launch of Chandrayaan-2 to October 2018.

It was earlier reported that ISRO would launch India’s second moon mission in April, but ISRO chairman K Sivan has now said that Chandrayaan-2 will take off in October.

“Chandrayaan 2 will not be in April, it has been changed to October,” the Press Trust of India quoted Sivan as saying.

Explaining the reason for the delay, Sivan said that the mission still needs to undergo a few tests, and Chandrayaan-2 will be ready for lift-off only after they have been completed.

ISRO describes Chandrayaan-2 as a “totally indigenous mission comprising an orbiter, lander, and rover.” And lauding the organization’s efforts, minister of state in the prime minister’s office Dr Jitendra Singh has said that India’s mission was much more powerful than NASA’s Apollo missions.

“Chandrayaan-2 is one of the most remarkable ISRO missions of 2018 and it will be a world event,” Singh, who is in charge of India’s space missions, earlier told NDTV. He added that the unmanned mission will add to India’s credibility and competitiveness when it comes to space programmes and “packs more power than the Apollo missions by NASA.”

Speaking about Chandrayaan-2’s capabilities, he had said that the mission is scientifically very advanced and can send important data on the moon. The data then “may open up possibilities of future habitation of the moon.”

“Chandrayaan-2 will be a breakthrough mission not only for India but for the entire world,” he added, and also said that it would make Indians “proud.”

While the project itself is intriguing, it has also been said that the lunar mission is cheaper than Hollywood’s 2014 sci-fi movie “Interstellar.”

The cost of the mission has been pegged at about Rs 800 crore (approximately $123 million) while the budget of the Matthew McConaughey-starrer was a whopping Rs 1,062 crore, which is about $165 million.

Even ISRO’s Mars mission Mangalyaan, launched in 2013, reportedly cost lesser than Hollywood movie “Gravity.” While Mangalyaan was worth RS Rs 470 crore, about $72.4 million, the Sandra Bullock-starrer was made in a budget of Rs 644 crore ($100 million).

Apart from the Chandrayaan-2 mission, ISRO is also said to be studying the possibility of habitation on the moon.

The same was confirmed by Singh Wednesday, March 21.

“ISRO, along with academic institutions, is doing experimentation on potential structures for lunar habitation,” Bloomberg quoted him as saying. “Various options are being studied about the requirements and complexities of habitats.”

Air India makes history, lands in Israel using Saudi airspace

Air India

Air India makes history, lands in Israel using Saudi airspace

Air India’s maiden flight to Israel has landed in Tel Aviv, reducing the travel time substantially after Saudi Arabia for the first time allowed a commercial flight to use its airspace, indicating a thaw in relations between the Arab kingdom and the Jewish state.

Heralding a new beginning in the people-to-people contact and diplomatic ties between India and Israel, the state-run Air India introduced the direct thrice-a-week flight from New Delhi to Tel Aviv yesterday.

Saudi Arabia permitted the airline to use its airspace, enabling it to take a shorter route, covering the distance in 7.25 hours, about 2.10 hours less as compared to the only other airline that flies between the two countries — Israel’s national carrier El Al.

Flight AI 139 landed at Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion airport at 2215 hours (Israeli time) yesterday, heralding a new chapter in the India-Israel ties and ending decades-old overfly ban by Saudi Arabia.

“This is really a historical moment… We are in a new era. I am sure that we will see many more Indian tourists coming to Israel… and Israelis would also come to India in much higher numbers,” Israeli Tourism Minister Yariv Levin told PTI.

He said such a direct link would further strengthen the relationship between the two nations.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Israel considers the new route important, noting that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu raised the matter of the route with his counterpart Narendra Modi when the two met in July in Israel and then in January in India.

The ministry said the route would also lower fares and boost investment and tourism from India to Israel.

Saudi Arabia’s decision to permit Air India to use its airspace has enabled the airline to take a shorter route.

Many Arab and Islamic nations do not recognise Israel and, therefore, disallow airlines from using their airspace for flight services to that country.

IRCTC to Install POS Machines on Trains for Compulsory Billing of Food!

IRCTC to Install POS Machines on Trains for Compulsory Billing of Food!

Following several criticisms by passengers, including being overcharged, the Indian Railways is aggresively advocating transparency.

We recently wrote about a new policy which allows passengers to refuse payment for the food they have consumed if they haven’t received a bill, and now, new Point of Sale (POS) machines, will make sure you get a bill, leaving a zero margin for overcharging.

The IRCTC Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation has come up with this concept of compulsory billing of food, on trains, to combat rampant overcharging.

The pilot project has been implemented on the SBC-NDLS Karnataka Express. A 100 more POS machines, will be commissioned on another 26 trains, in the next phase, says the Indian Railways.

The Railways has an interesting on-ground, yet hi-tech way of collecting feedback. Officials wielding tablets travel aboard trains, to monitor catering services, and collect passenger feedback.

Piyush Goyal, the Union Railway Minister, has directed the Railways, to implement this policy by March 31, 2018. The IRCTC Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation has put the required information up on their website, for passengers who look to book tickets.

Mahametro to build 25-storey tower opposite Yeshwant Stadium

Mahametro

NAGPUR: Mahametro has decided to change the location of the highest building of the city from Munje Square to opposite Yashwant Stadium in Dhantoli.

The 25-storey tower will be a part of the traffic and transport management centre (TTMC). Although the decision was taken more than a year ago, it has come to light after tender for construction of TTMC was floated.

Mahametro had earlier decided to house the Sitabuldi interchange station in a 25-storey building with floors over the station having hotels, multiplexes, malls, offices, etc. “When we started construction of the Sitabuldi station, we realized that it would require land acquisition and several banks and shops in the area would have to be razed. Moreover, Munje Square would have to closed for traffic for over a year. Underground parking too will not be possible at the site. So, we decided to change the plan. Now, the structure will only have one floor above the station for traffic control,” managing director Brijesh Dixit told.

Mahametro had launched an architecture contest to design the Zero Mile and Sitabuldi interchange stations in May 2015. French firm Enia had bagged the job and designed the stations. The design for Zero Mile station still stands.

Mahametro project director Mahesh Kumar said that the TTMC would come up on Patwardhan Ground, which was spread over an area of around 20,000 square metre.

“It will be connected with the station with an elevated skywalk. We will provide bus connectivity and parking in the TTMC. The construction will have a floor to space index (FSI) of 4 and will be spread over 9.83 lakh square feet. Some 2.92 lakh square feet will be dedicated to free parking. It will be a public private partnership (PPP) project,” he added.

Elaborating on the project, Kumar said that it would have three towers and cost Rs320 crore. “One tower will be 25 storey high while the remaining two will have 19 floors. All the towers will have retail mall on ground, first and second floors and small offices on third, fourth and fifth floors. A three-level multiplex has been envisaged above fifth floor in Tower 1 and fifteen floor of offices in Towers 1 and 3,” he added.

Kumar further said that the retail mall would have inline stores, food court, family entertainment centre, large format stores, supermarket, mini anchor fashion store, mini anchor for electronics and home decor, etc.
“The basement will be completely dedicated to parking. We will provide 600 bays for parking of cars, 1,050 bays for parking of motorcycles and 1,000 slots for bicycles,” he added.

The PPP operator will have to make the TTMC a green building with IGBC platinum rating. “The operator will landscape the promenade along Nag River in line with Nag riverfront development project. A landscaped public plaza in front of the TTMC will have to be created. Sun-cutting louvers on the façades, rainwater harvesting and public art will be the other features,” he further said.

Earlier, talking about the film, Shukla said to a media agency, “Sometimes, what happens is that when so much makeup is done before the shoot, one gets tired, but with these people (Amitabh and Rishi), they never show it… Forget about showing, it doesn’t even seem they are tired. Both actors are so passionate about their work that they don’t like it if a shot is not well done. They see to it that there’s perfection.”
