Nagpur: Cash-strapped Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) diverted funds of Rs 9.50 crore meant for plying of electric buses for women in the city for payment of other development works. State Government had released this sum to run Tejaswini buses dedicated for women commuters in the city.
From the funds, Transport Department was to purchase 6 electric buses and its cost was worked out at Rs 1.28 crore each per bus. The department had also planned to create infrastructure for plying of these women special buses. However, Accounts and Finance Department it is learnt from sources have diverted funds for clearing payment of other works without taking permission of the competent authority.
Bunty Kukde, Chairman, Transport Committee, NMC, confirmed that its funds were diverted without its nod and due to this the process for procurement of buses has been delayed.
NMC will also run 3 bio-diesel buses in the city on pilot basis. The department is prepare a proposal for the same.
