Nagpur record decade’s highest temperature on Monday

Date:

Nagpur : Vidarbha region today continued to reel under intense heat. On Monday, Nagpur (45.6 degrees Celsius) and Yavatmal (44.5 degrees Celsius) recorded their highest temperature in 10 years — both 3 degrees Celsius above normal. Both locations surpassed their last year’s record of 45.5 degrees Celsius (Nagpur) and 44 degrees Celsius (Yavatmal) that was recorded on April 18.

Relief from the scorching heat is not expected anytime soon for these areas, as the weather bureau has predicted heat wave conditions for Vidarbha and some parts of Marathwada till May 3.

“There is continuous hot air advection (transfer of heat horizontally through the atmosphere) from northwest parts of the country and areas like Sindh, Balochistan and central Pakistan. Along with this a clear sky, and no moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal is leading to dry heat over all these areas,” said AD Tathe, director, Regional Meteorological Centre, India Meteorological Department (IMD), Nagpur. “These are normal conditions during this time of the year, but areas such as Chandrapur and Bhrampuri are unusually warmer than others. However, from Wednesday, we expect temperatures to drop. But it will remain an average of 44 degrees Celsius.”

Brahmpuri recorded 46 degrees Celsius, 4.2 degree Celsius above normal. “These locations are two of the highest maximum temperatures in India on Monday,” said Tathe.

Rajasthan too is reeling under similar weather conditions. Bundi, Phalodi, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Barmer and Sawai Madhopur have recorded an average of 45 degrees Celsius, said IMD officials.

Meanwhile, day temperature in south Mumbai on Monday was a degree Celsius above normal as Colaba recorded 34 degrees Celsius. Santacruz, however, recorded normal the maximum temperature at 33.1 degrees Celsius. Night temperature was close to normal. For the third consecutive day, the air quality index (AQI) continued under the ‘satisfactory’ category in Mumbai at 56.
