One year of curfew, a 14-hour-long Janata Curfew was imposed in the wake of rising coronavirus cases in the country. The curfew would pave the way for a 21-day nationwide lockdown that would be extended till May 31, 2020.
Here is a look back at some of the events that took place a year ago.
At 5 pm on March 22, 2020, all citizens stood on their doorways, balconies or windows, and clap their hands or ring their bells in appreciation for the professionals delivering these essential services.
One year of curfew At the end of the Janata Curfew, PM Narendra Modi served notice of a lengthy battle against Covid-19 and more measures to contain and isolate its spread when he thanked people for responding to his call to observe a ‘Janata curfew’ and signal empathy with frontline workers by clapping, ringing bells or banging ‘thalis’ for five minutes at 5 pm on Sunday. He emphasized his call for social distancing and stay-at-home advice through multiple tweets as he urged people not to start celebrating the end of ‘Janata curfew’ and instead asked them to gear up for a long battle that could only be won if people stayed united and committed.
Modi tweeted, “Today’s Janata curfew may get over at 9 pm but that doesn’t mean we should start celebrating. Do not consider it a success. This is the beginning of a long fight. Today, countrymen have declared that we are capable, if we decide, we can beat the biggest challenge together.”
One year of curfew Before the imposition of Janata Curfew, there were 13 states and Union territories where coronavirus pandemic was yet to spread. In the coming months, the virus would spread as far away as Andaman and Nicobar Islands, killing over 1,59,000 people.

Nagpur: District guardian minister Nitin Raut told that a review meeting will be convened on Saturday on whether or not to extend the weeklong lockdown. Raut, who is in Mumbai, expressed concern over the spike in coronavirus cases in the city.
On Thursday, municipal commissioner Radhakrishnan B too had stated that Raut would convene a meeting over the issue. The civic administration hinted that with a spike in Covid-19 cases, they favored extension of the weeklong lockdown till March 29 due to Holi. They also hinted that if extended, the lockdown will be much stricter.
A police source said that the top brass has decided to recommend the extension of restrictions till March 29 which will cover Holi to ensure the festival of colors does not trigger the avoidable mingling and chaos on the streets which may undo the efforts undertaken since March 15. With the restrictions lifted, police feel that allowing citizens to enjoy Holi may boomerang, and hence it is gearing up to support the theory of retaining the curbs.
Roadside hawkers and autorickshaw drivers from Hingna have threatened to resort to an indefinite hunger strike if the administration extended the weeklong lockdown. “If the government wants to extend the lockdown then it should first provide financial assistance to roadside hawkers and autorickshaw drivers,” said Prem Kumar of Autorickshaw Chalak Malak Sangh (Hingna road).
He said as many 300 autorickshaw drivers and a similar number of hawkers will stage an indefinite agitation at Lokmanya Nagar Metro Station, near Hingna T-point.
A meeting in this regard was held on Friday evening and it was unanimously decided by the members to participate in the hunger strike.
The pandemic, and the subsequent lockdown, have severely impacted the livelihood of autorickshaw drivers, hawkers, and daily wagers. “Not only our livelihood in terms of daily earnings disappeared, but we also could not service the bank loan or any other private loans leading to financial distress. Even after the phase-wise lifting of lockdown, regular users did not feel comfortable returning to their usual travel on account of keeping a safe distance. Sharing rides with other passengers is a thing of the past now,” pointed out Kumar.
Several autorickshaw owners even paid rent for parking their vehicles during the lockdown. Most of them are facing hardships in repaying their loans. Although a moratorium for loan repayments was declared till September 2020, now all financial institutions are issuing threats of proceeding with legal action if the loan is not repaid.
The situation is no different for hawkers or those who run roadside tea kiosks. Santosh Chavan and Manoj Chowdhary, both hawkers on Hingna road, slammed the civic administration and district guardian minister for not giving a thought to the livelihood of such people while imposing the weeklong lockdown. “If the lockdown is extended even for a week then we will die due to starvation,” said Chavan.
“We have decided to fight for our community,” said Chowdhary.

Multiple teams are working on it, and we’ll update you when we can,” tweeted Facebook Gaming. Incidentally, WhatsApp has a “status” Twitter account that is meant to post problems with the platform, however, it has not been updated since 2014.

U.S. auto safety agency disclosed on Thursday it has opened 27 investigations into crashes of Tesla vehicles, 23 of which remain active, and at least three of the crashes occurred in recent weeks.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) confirmed Thursday that it will send a team to investigate a recent Tesla crash in the Houston area. Four of the 27 NHTSA investigations have been completed and the results published.
Earlier this week, NHTSA said it was sending its special crash investigation team to probe two crashes in Michigan, including a crash early Wednesday involving a Tesla suspected of being in Autopilot mode when it struck a parked Michigan State Police patrol car.
Tesla did not immediately comment.
NHTSA said in July that its “(Special Crash Investigations team) has looked into 19 crashes involving Tesla vehicles where it was believed some form of advanced driver assistance system was engaged at the time of the incident.”
Michigan State Police said a parked patrol car was struck by a Tesla apparently in Autopilot mode while investigating a traffic crash near Lansing on Interstate-96. No one was injured and the 22-year-old Tesla driver was issued traffic citations.
On Monday, NHTSA said it was sending another team to investigate a “violent” March 11 crash in Detroit in which a Tesla became wedged underneath a tractor-trailer and left a passenger in critical condition.
Detroit police said Tuesday they do not believe that Autopilot was in use.
The Autopilot feature was operating in at least three Tesla vehicles involved in fatal U.S. crashes since 2016.
Tesla advises drivers they must keep their hands on the steering wheel and pay attention while using Autopilot. However, some Tesla drivers say they are able to avoid putting their hands on the wheel for extended periods when using Autopilot.
NHTSA’s Special Crash Investigation team typically looks at more than 100 crashes a year with a focus on emerging technologies. Issues in recent years include the performance of alternative fueled vehicles, child restraint systems, adaptive controls, safety belts, vehicle-pedestrian interactions, and potential safety defects.
Separately, the agency said it had been briefed on Tesla’s “full self-driving” (FSD) software. Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk wrote on Twitter last week that the beta FSD software had been expanded to about 2,000 owners while other drivers had access to the program revoked.
The agency said it “will monitor the new technology closely and will not hesitate to take action to protect the public against risks to safety.”
NHTSA said the system does not make Tesla “capable of driving itself. The most advanced vehicle technologies available for purchase today provide driver assistance and require a fully attentive human driver at all times performing the driving task and monitoring the surrounding environment.”

Canadian singer and songwriter, Justin Bieber on Friday released his sixth studio album, titled ‘Justice’, and received rave reviews from fans.
According to Fox News, the pop icon created the album during the pandemic and hopes that his new music can “provide comfort to the listener.”
During a recent Zoom press conference, Justin said, “I know a lot of people have been isolated, but music is really an outlet to bring people together.”
He added, “I named it ‘Justice’ because there’s so much injustice in this world and there has been since the beginning of time… My name Justin actually means justice, so there’s that. I’m really honored to play a small part and be able to make music that inspires and can uplift people in this time.”
One of the songs named ‘Die For You’, opens with a part of a speech that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. gave in 1957. Bieber wanted his album to directly address the Black Lives Matter movement. Speaking about it Justin said, “What I wanted to do with this was amplify Dr Martin Luther King Jr’s voice to this generation. Being Canadian, it wasn’t so much a part of my culture… this speech was actually during the time when he had a feeling that he was going to die for the cause, and what he was standing up against was ultimately racism and division.”
He added, “I think his message was that a lot of people can be afraid to stand up for what is right, but if you’re not standing up for justice — for what is right — what are you doing with your life? I’m sorry to get so deep, but these are the times we’re living in. That’s why I wanted to make this album because I think it’s very timely and very necessary.”
Fans of the singer reacted to the album on Twitter and praised it as Bieber’s best yet. One fan wrote, “Very much in love with Justin Bieber’s new album…no complaints.”
Another added, “I got 99 problems and Justin Bieber’s new album #justice just solved all of them.”
Another song, ‘Unstable’, also addresses Bieber’s mental health struggles throughout his life. “I was in a really, really bad place maybe a year ago,” he explained.
As per Fox News, the new album from the 27-year-old musician features a number of collabs including ones with producer and DJ Skrillex, Soul singers Del Caesar and Given, rappers Lil Uzi Vert and Chance The Rapper, and singer Khalid.

Amitabh Bachchan pens note of gratitude to the film industry after receiving FIAF award
Megastar Amitabh Bachchan penned a heartwarming note for the film industry after he got conferred with the 2021 FIAF Award by The International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF), the organisation of film archives and museums from across the world, at a virtual ceremony held on March 19.
On Instagram, the 78-year-old star posted a picture of him from last night after he received the accolade.
Taking it to the captions, he wrote, “I am deeply honored to have been conferred with the 2021 FIAF Award. Thank you to FIAF and to Martin Scorsese and Christopher Nolan for bestowing the award on me in the ceremony today.”
“Our commitment to the cause of saving India’s film heritage is unshakeable and Film Heritage Foundation will continue its efforts to build a nationwide movement to save our films,” he concluded.
Iconic filmmakers Martin Scorsese and Christopher Nolan, who have been previous recipients, gave the award to Big B for his contribution to the preservation of and access to the world’s film heritage for the benefit of present and future generations.
At the opening ceremony of the 2018 Kolkata Film Festival, Bachchan had delivered an impassioned speech on film preservation, saying that most films of Indian filmmaking legends have “gone up in flames or have been discarded on the scrap heap.”
“Very little of this great film heritage survives, and if we do not take urgent steps to save what remains, in another hundred years there will be no memory of these films and nothing left to celebrate,” the actor had said.
Bachchan was nominated by the FIAF-affiliate Film Heritage Foundation, an Indian film archival organization founded by filmmaker and archivist Shivendra Singh Dungarpur.
Dungarpur pointed out that India’s track record in film preservation is dismal. By 1950, India had lost almost 70 percent of its films, and of the 1,338 silent films made in India, some 29 survive, many only in fragments.
He said that Bachchan “constructively wielded his influence to amplify the cause on a war footing,” in South Asia and that he was the unmous choice of the 172 FIAF-affiliated archives for the award.
Scorsese also commented on Big B and said, “Amitabh Bachchan’s advocacy for preserving India’s film legacy has been exceptional.”
Nolan, who is a staunch supporter of celluloid over digital, said, “As a past recipient of the FIAF Award, I know how imperative it is that representatives of the film industry around the world come together to ensure that we preserve our film heritage.”
Congratulating Bachchan, Nolan said, “he has played an essential role in putting the cause of film preservation on the map in India and the subcontinent.”
The FIAF Award was introduced in 2001 when it was presented to Scorsese for his film archival efforts. It has since recognized personalities from outside the archival scene who have worked to advocate the cause of film preservation.
Past winners of the award include Ingmar Bergman (2003), Mike Leigh (2005), Hou Hsiao-hsien (2006), Peter Bogdanovich (2007), Rithy Panh (2009), Agnes Varda (2013), Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne (2016), Christopher Nolan (2017), Apichatpong Weerasethakul (2018), Jean-Luc Godard (2019), and Walter Salles (2020).

In Tests, Bumrah has 83 wickets and five five-wicket hauls to his name at an average of 22.10
In the 50-over format, the Indian pacer has taken 108 wickets at an impressive economy rate of 4.65.
Bumrah burst onto the scene after impressing one and all during an IPL season with Mumbai Indians. The Indian speedster will also miss the upcoming ODI series against England.
Bumrah is expected to return to the field next month for Mumbai Indians as the five-time IPL champions begin their title defence.
Wrestler Ritika was a cousin of Indian wrestling champions Babita and Geeta Phogat. According to the police, the 17-year-old wrestler died allegedly by suicide. She was training at the Mahavir Phogat Sports Academy in Haryana.
According to Haryana Police, Ritika took her own life by hanging herself from a ceiling fan at the house of her uncle, Dronacharya awardee Mahavir Phogat. Prima facie the police, as well as the Phogat household, believe that Ritika took the extreme step as she was upset over losing the final of a state-level junior wrestling tournament by one point. The championship was organized at Lohagarh Stadium in Bharatpur, Rajasthan from March 12 to 14. Mahavir Phogat had accompanied Ritika to Bharatpur and came back to Balali with her.
Narrating the turn of events, a member of the Phogat household in Balali told TOI, “Ritika and Mahavir Ji had gone to Bharatpur for the tournament. She did well but lost in the final to a Rajasthan wrestler by one point. The tournament ended on March 14 and both came back to Balali by car during the day on March 15. Later that night, Ritika hanged herself with a dupatta.”
“When she came back, she was very upset over the loss. When you have sisters who are super achievers in wrestling, it is possible that one feels the pressure to attain similar fame,” said a family member.
“Investigation into Ritika Phogat’s death is underway,” said Ram Singh Bishnoi, the DSP of Charkhi Dadri.
Ritika was the daughter of Mahavir Phogat’s wife Daya Kaur’s brother. She had been staying with her uncle and training under him for the last four years.
Ritika’s cousin sisters expressed shock and were distraught over her death.
“It’s a very sad moment for my family. Ritika was a talented wrestler and I don’t know why she took such a step. Victory and defeat are a part of an athlete’s life. We should never take such a step,” Geeta, who is training at the national camp and preparing for the Asian Olympic qualifiers,
“May she rest in peace. Suicide is not the solution. Both defeat and victory are important aspects of life. The loser also wins one day. The struggle is the key to success, no such step should be taken by being afraid of the struggles of life,” Babita said.
“I am very sad and disturbed about what has happened in my family. I urge people to not spread and believe in any rumors and act responsibly. These are tough times for us and I request you all to respect our privacy,” Ritu, an MMA fighter who is in Singapore at present, tweeted.
Ritika’s brother-in-law (husband of Sangeeta Phogat) and star Indian wrestler Bajrang Punia also expressed his sorrow at her death. “Winning and losing is part and parcel of sports. If you’re an athlete, you have to accept this. You win some, you lose some. She was very young, what she did was a mistake,” Punia said.
Ritika is survived by her father Manipal, mother Monika, and four younger siblings (two brothers and two sisters), who stay in Jaitpur village in Rajasthan’s Jhunjhunu district. She was due to give her Class XII board exams in the first week of May from Vivekanand Memorial Public School, founded by Mahavir Phogat near his home village.

A Madhya Pradesh farmer union leader organised his son’s marriage at a protest site in Rewa, around 500 kilometers from Bhopal, where hundreds of farmers have been protesting the centre’s three agriculture laws. The leader said it sends out a message to the central government that the farmers will not stop protesting until their demands are fulfilled.
“We wanted to give a strong message to the centre that we will not leave the protest site, even for our son’s marriage…we also want to give a message to the society as this marriage took place without dowry…this is the city’s first marriage in which the bride brought the baraat,” Ramjit Singh, Madhya Pradesh Kisan Mahasabha’s district leader, told reporters.
The couple – Sachin and Asma Singh – took an oath to protect the constitution. They also took pheras around the idols of social reformers BR Ambedkar and Savitribai Phule.
They donated the money and other items received as marriage gifts to the farmers’ union that organised the protest. “We will leave no stones unturned for our demands,” Sachin told reporters.
Thousands of farmers have been protesting at Delhi borders and several other places since November-end against the laws that the centre brought in last year, pitching them as long overdue reforms that would help improve farm incomes.
Farmers, however, want the laws scrapped, saying they will eat into their livelihood and take away the protection of guaranteed prices for their produce.
World Sleep Day is an annual event, intended to be a celebration of sleep and a call to action on important issues related to sleep, including medicine, education, social aspects, and driving. It is organized by the World Sleep Day Committee of the World Sleep Society and aims to lessen the burden of sleep problems on society through better prevention and management of sleep disorders.
World Sleep Day is held the Friday before Spring Vernal Equinox of each year. Future dates will be Friday, March 18, 2022.
How can we have regular sleep? We need to remember the two processes that regulate both the timing and length of sleep: Circadian regulation (process C) and homeostatic control (process S) also known as the two-process model of sleep.
Although many other factors affect sleep, such as environment, stress, and medications; understanding these two processes will help us strive towards a consistent sleep schedule. Process C refers to our internal clock, regulated by a part of our brain called the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) of the hypothalamus.
This clock regulates and controls the 24-hour sleep-wake cycle via the influence of light and melatonin. In the absence of light (as during the evening hours), melatonin is produced promoting sleep but in the presence of light, the production of melatonin ceases, signaling our brain that is daytime and we need to wake up.
Our behavior can override these natural signals. For instance, bright lights at night shut down the production of melatonin, delaying sleep until late hours of the night.
Co-Chair Dr. Fang Han
Process S promotes sleep based on the previous amount of time that we spent awake. During wakefulness, our brain accumulates substances that promote sleep, when we sleep these substances are cleared up and we feel alert again. This process is particularly important when we take naps in the afternoon because we deplete the sleep-promoting substances and we are not able to fall asleep at a reasonable time in the evening.
The best sleep is when we synchronize our sleep/wake times to our internal clock and our sleep propensity finding the perfect equilibrium between process C and process S.
It is important to remember that sleep is involved with many physiologic systems such as memory consolidation, control of inflammation, hormone regulation, cardiovascular regulation, and many other important functions, therefore insufficient sleep duration and poor sleep quality will be associated with several significant adverse health outcomes.
Reduced sleep duration has been shown to cause impairments in cognitive and executive function, while poor sleep has been associated with poor mental health
Who created World Sleep Day?
The annual awareness event was started by a group of dedicated healthcare providers and members of the medical community working and studying in the area of sleep medicine and research. The goal of the first World Sleep Day was to bring together sleep healthcare providers to discuss and distribute sleep information around the world.
The first co-chairs of World Sleep Day were Liborio Parrino, MD, Associate Professor of Neurology at Parma University, Italy, and Antonio Culebras, MD, Professor of Neurology, Upstate Medical University, and Consultant, The Sleep Center, Community General Hospital, Syracuse, New York, USA.
Why was World Sleep Day created?
Time and time again, sleep medicine professionals and researchers came up against the belief that sleep was not important enough in personal health and well-being to be a priority. That coupled with society’s 24/7 flow, the founders of this awareness event aim to celebrate the importance of healthy sleep.
Who supports World Sleep Day?
World Sleep Day is hosted by World Sleep Society (WSS), a nonprofit based in the United States. Per the organizational bylaws, World Sleep Society does not support, recommend or endorse any products or services. The awareness event does accept corporate sponsorships to help support the cost to host the event, but the World Sleep Society, the World Sleep Day Committee, or any person affiliated with WSS does not endorse or recommend commercial products, treatments, or companies.
What happens to funds raised by World Sleep Day?
The events and activities of World Sleep Day are free and open to the public. Companies that sponsor World Sleep Day provide funds to the World Sleep Society to reimburse the costs of the awareness day, including costs of press releases, website hosting, and creation of educational content.
Each year only a fraction of World Sleep Day’s cost is recouped through corporate sponsorships. Read more in our Frequently Asked Questions section about local/regional sponsors and local funds raised.

In the months before the U.S. election and the Jan. 6 Capitol assault, Facebook groups buzzed with misinformation and violent rhetoric. “Stop the Steal” groups rapidly swelled despite the pauses on recommendations.
Facebook Inc said on Wednesday it is starting to remove the recommendations it gives global users for political and social issue Facebook groups, a move it has billed as turning down tension on the site.
The company also announced in a blog post changes aimed at reducing the reach of groups that break site rules, including showing them lower in algorithmic recommendations and alerting people when they go to join a group that has previously violated policies.
Researchers and civil rights organizations have long warned that Facebook groups, a product the company has vigorously promoted as providing places for people with common interests, like sports or music, have also been used to spread misinformation and organize the extremist activity.
In an interview on Tuesday, Tom Alison, Facebook’s vice president of engineering, said Facebook was aggressively investing in groups.
He said the changes to political and civic group recommendations, which Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced on an earnings call in January, were due to users wanting to see less political content.
“They want us to turn down the temperature a little bit,” said Alison.
He said newly created groups on any topic would need to wait 21 days before becoming eligible for a recommendation in order to give Facebook time to understand how a group would operate.
Since 2017, Facebook has made groups a strategic priority, and Zuckerberg credits the feature as a way to foster “meaningful connections.” Last year, it stepped up the promotion of groups in news feeds and search engine results.
But during the coronavirus pandemic, Facebook stopped recommending health groups to users, saying they needed authoritative sources of information. It also cracked down on certain groups in recent months as part of policy changes to curb “militarized social movements.”
In the months before the U.S. election and the Jan. 6 Capitol assault, Facebook groups buzzed with misinformation and violent rhetoric. “Stop the Steal” groups rapidly swelled despite the pauses on recommendations.
Facebook said on Wednesday it would require group moderators to temporarily approve posts for groups with a “substantial” number of rule-breaking members or members who were part of other groups removed for rule violations.
It also said it would show rule-breaking groups’ content lower in members’ news feeds and temporarily stop repeat rule-breaking members from being able to post or create new groups.
Facebook’s Alison declined to say what criteria would determine when a rule-breaking group or its members would be removed from the platform.
T20 World Cup the decisions were taken due to new restrictions being put in place by several participating countries to suspend sporting activities to limit the spread of the new COVID-19 variants, therefore giving no opportunity for teams to sufficiently train.
Three men’s T20 World Cup Qualifiers in Africa and Asia — pathway tournaments to the 2022 showpiece event in Australia — have been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the game’s governing body ICC said on Thursday.
The Asia A Qualifier, which was due to be hosted between April 3 and 9, involving Bahrain, Kuwait, Maldives, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia, will now be played in Kuwait between October 23 to 29.
The decisions were taken due to new restrictions being put in place by several participating countries to suspend sporting activities to limit the spread of the new COVID-19 variants, therefore giving no opportunity for teams to sufficiently train.
The other contributing factor was the extensive quarantine requirements for the visiting teams on their return to their respective countries.
The men’s T20 World Cup Sub Regional Africa A and B Qualifiers were due to take place in South Africa in April this year and have been rescheduled to October 25-31.
Qualifier A involves Ghana, Lesotho, Malawi, Rwanda, Seychelles, Swaziland and Uganda, while Qualifier B includes Botswana, Cameroon, Mozambique, Sierra Leone, St Helena and Tanzania.
“The postponements were confirmed as a result of the process undertaken for the ICC’s comprehensive contingency planning of COVID-19 after consultation with members and with the relevant government and public health authorities,” the world body said in a statement.
“The ICC men’s T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier is now confirmed to take place between 24 and 27 November in Nigeria involving Kenya, Nigeria, and the top teams from the Sub Regional Africa A and B Qualifiers respectively to allow sufficient time for the sub-regional qualifiers to be completed.”
In addition, the ICC U19 men’s World Cup Asia Division 2 has also been canceled as Thailand are unable to host due to COVID-19 restrictions and there is no other suitable hosting option.
Bhutan, Hong Kong, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, and Thailand were confirmed to participate in the Division 2 event.
Oman and Singapore have now been promoted to the U19 Men’s CWC Asia Qualifier scheduled in September in the United Arab Emirates, as a result of both teams having the best records in the previous five editions of the U19 men’s CWC qualifiers.
The ICC U19 men’s World Cup Africa Division 2 Qualifier has been postponed to August 7-13 from June 2021 due to COVID-19 travel restrictions where hosts Tanzania, Botswana, Kenya, Mozambique, Rwanda, and Sierra Leone will compete for two U19 men’s Cricket World Cup Africa Qualifier spots.
“The dates for the U19 Men’s CWC Africa Qualifier have been confirmed as 25 September to 1 October and will be hosted by Nigeria with Namibia, Nigeria, Uganda also competing for one spot in the West Indies in early 2022,” the governing body said.
The ICC women’s T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier which is a qualifying tournament to the showpiece event in 2023 has been rescheduled to October to 3-11 from September to ease regional calendar congestion involving hosts Botswana, Cameroon, Namibia, Nigeria, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zimbabwe.
John Abraham is packing a punch with three theatrical releases this year, the most recent being gangster drama Mumbai Saga, and the actor-producer says he will “always” choose the big screen over streamers. According to the 48-year-old star, it is important for the film industry to instill confidence in cinema owners as they open their theatres with adherence to the COVID-19 protocol, so that audience can once again look forward to the community viewing experience.
“For me, the joy is reaching out to common people through my films because we are here to entertain them. I want to make good films. I don’t care about success and failure. I like to succeed in reaching out to more people. I want the audience to have that big-screen experience. We lost that sense of big screen, heroism in films and ‘Mumbai Saga’ will bring that back,” Abraham told PTI in an interview.
There is “general consensus that actors are palming off their not-so-good films” on OTT (over-the-top) platforms, he said.
“There are few actors who see their films and realize it is best to go on OTT directly to save from the embarrassment of coming on the big screen… Films are judged on every medium. (And) They are ripping apart films on OTT,” he added.
The actor also stars in Satyameva Jayate 2 and Attack, both action dramas scheduled to be released in cinema halls. While Satyameva Jayate 2 will clash with Salman Khan’s Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai on the Eid holiday of May 13, Attack will open on Independence Day weekend.
This year, Abraham will also be seen in a cameo in Sardar Ka Grandson, slated to be released on the streamer Netflix. Starring Arjun Kapoor, Neena Gupta, and Rakul Preet Singh in the lead, the film is a joint production of Abraham’s JA Entertainment, Emmay Entertainment, and T-Series.
Although OTT is a “great avenue”, the actor said he doesn’t want to take away the theatrical experience from the audience.
“The OTT platform is a great avenue and an option. But for me, it has always been about the big screen, being a big-screen hero. I won’t be available for a subscription fee,” he added.
In Mumbai Saga, directed by Sanjay Gupta, Abraham plays a gangster named Amartya Rao. The actor, who has played grey roles in movies like Shootout at Wadala and Race 2, said he enjoys playing the anti-hero.
“Normal has become boring. If you make a regular film, where the script is conceptually different and then you play a regular man, it is fine. People also love the anti-hero and they are going to relate to the film because we all are a face of rebellion in this country.”
The film, slated to be released on Friday, is set in the 1980s-90s and revolves around all that went into transforming Bombay into Mumbai. There were unconfirmed reports that Mumbai Saga will premiere on a digital platform, but Gupta stuck to his promise of releasing the movie in cinema halls.
Abraham, best known for action entertainers like Dhoom, Madras Cafe, Satyameva Jayate, and Batla House, said the surge in COVID-19 cases is worrying for the makers who had barely started rolling out the dates of the ready to be released films.
“My concern as an actor is my film has to be decent enough to be a good enough film. Also, every actor is worried about his filmography and what his net collections will look like. We don’t know what is going to happen next, the cases are going up now.”
Mumbai Saga also features Emraan Hashmi, Kajal Aggarwal, Mahesh Manjrekar, Suniel Shetty, Prateik Babbar, Rohit Roy, Gulshan Grover, and Amole Gupte. It is produced by T-Series, White Feather Films, and Sangeeta Ahir.
San Francisco: Graham Ivan Clark, a teenager behind the unprecedented Twitter hack of July last year that compromised high-profile accounts belonging to Elon Musk, Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, Barack Obama and Joe Biden, among others, has been sent to three years in prison as part of his plea deal.
According to The Tampa Bay Times, the teenager took control of celebrity accounts and used them to gain more than $100,000 in Bitcoin.
“In a deal with prosecutors, Clark agreed to serve three years in prison, followed by three years probation,” the report said on Tuesday.
Clark was 17 when he was accused of masterminding the Twitter hack.
The agreement has allowed Clark, now 18, to be sentenced as a “youthful offender,” avoiding a minimum 10-year sentence that would have followed if he’d been convicted as an adult.
“Graham Clark needs to be held accountable for that crime, and other potential scammers out there need to see the consequences,” Hillsborough State Attorney Andrew Warren said in a statement.
“In this case, we’ve been able to deliver those consequences while recognizing that our goal with any child, whenever possible, is to have them learn their lesson without destroying their future.”
Authorities said the scam netted about $117,000 in Bitcoin before it was shut down.
Twitter later revealed more details in the massive crypto hack, saying the hackers accessed the DM (direct message) inbox of up to 36 of the 130 targeted users, including one elected official in the Netherlands.
In total, 130 accounts were targeted by attackers, 45 accounts had Tweets sent by attackers, 36 accounts had the DM inbox accessed and eight accounts had an archive of “Your Twitter Data” downloaded (none of these was verified), informed Twitter.
Amazon Prime Video on Wednesday revealed the teaser of its upcoming family entertainer, Hello Charlie. The short clip features Aadar Jain along with a gorilla. Yes, you read that right!
Helmed by Pankaj Saraswat and co-produced by Excel Entertainment, Hello Charlie’s storyline revolves around a simple young man (Aadar Jain) who has been assigned the task to transport a gorilla from Mumbai to Diu. The adventures the unlikely duo get embroiled in along the way form the crux of the plot.
In the released clip we see Aadar’s character and the gorilla having a good time listening to songs like “Ambersariya” and Zindagi Milegi Na Dobara’s track “Khaabon Ke Parinday.” A tiny scuffle ensues when the pair cannot decide on the song they both would like to listen to. As of now, the premise seems engaging enough for a predictable yet enjoyable time at the movies. But only time will tell if Hello Charlie manages to live up to its promise.
Speaking about the experience of directing Hello Charlie, Pankaj Saraswat said in a statement, “Working on Hello Charlie with Ritesh and Farhan has been an incredible experience. The film’s unconventional storyline is truly one of its kind and hoping it spreads much joy. The cast has phenomenally helmed their characters with their unique comic timing and genuine appeal. It was always great fun on the sets and I am glad that people from worldwide will be able to see our film and be entertained.”
Producer Ritesh Sidhwani also chipped in and stated, “We’ve had multiple projects in collaboration with Amazon Prime Video, and Hello Charlie will be our first feature together.
Gauhar Khan has been accused of allegedly flouting quarantine rules after testing positive for the coronavirus.
The Federation of Western India Cine Employees, an umbrella body of over 32 film industry unions, on Tuesday issued a non-cooperative directive against actor Gauahar Khan for allegedly flouting quarantine rules after testing positive for the coronavirus, The Indian Express reported.
The notice against Khan asked all Indian cinema associations linked to the federation to “distance themselves” from the actor for the next two months till a fresh directive was issued, permitting her to resume work in the industry.
The union’s actions against the actor came a day after Mumbai’s civic body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, complained against Khan for allegedly going out for a film shoot despite testing positive. A first information report was registered against her.
In a press release on Tuesday, the Federation of Western India Cine Employees “highly condemned” Khan’s alleged actions, and said it was “indeed a serious offense”. It said that the actor had not only breached the rules issued by the central and the state government but had “also endangered the lives of the entire crew members” who were working with her on the shoot.
“Such ignorance will not be tolerated by the FWICE and it thanks the BMC and Mumbai Police for the FIR lodged against Ms. Gauahar Khan, actress Mumbai for her inhuman, disrespectful act towards the other crew members as well as the government,” the union added.
The federation said it was issuing a Non-Cooperation Directive against the actor for two months. “Any members if found cooperating with Ms. Gauahar Khan shall also be liable for stringent disciplinary action by the FWICE,” it added.
FWICE President BN Tiwari told The Indian Express that because of Khan’s “highly unprofessional, non-cooperative and irresponsible” actions, the whole cast and crew from the film she was shooting for will have to be quarantined and work will be halted. “She should have followed the rules to made sure that she stays healthy and doesn’t risk others’ lives,” he added.
