Laxman Narasimhan Named New Starbucks CEO

Laxman Narasimhan, a veteran in leading and advising global consumer-facing brands, has been named as the new chief executive officer of coffee giant Starbucks, joining a growing cohort of Indian-origin business leaders at the helm of global corporations.

Narasimhan, 55 was previously the CEO of United Kingdom-based Reckitt Benckiser, a multinational consumer health, hygiene and nutrition company.

Starbucks announced on Thursday that Narasimhan will become the company’s next chief executive officer and a member of the Starbucks Board of Directors.

Narasimhan will join Starbucks as incoming CEO on October 1, 2022 after relocating from London to the Seattle area and will work closely with Howard Schultz, the interim CEO, before assuming the leadership role and joining the Board on April 1, 2023.

Reckitt Benckiser said in a statement Thursday that Narasimhan will step down as Chief Executive Officer on September 30, 2022.

It said he has ‘decided for personal and family reasons to relocate back to the United States and has been approached for an opportunity that enables him to live there’.

In the statement, Narasimhan said that ‘he has been offered an opportunity to return to the United States and although it is difficult to leave, it is the right decision for me and my family’.

With this appointment, Nara-simhan joins a growing list of Indian-origin CEOs at the helm of United States-based global giants, including Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen, Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai and Twitter head Parag Agrawal. Indra Nooyi had served as Pepsi Co’s CEO for 12 years before stepping down in 2018.

Schultz said that when he learned about Narasimhan’s desire to relocate, it became apparent that he is the ‘right leader to take Starbucks into its next chapter. He is uniquely positioned to shape this work and lead the company forward with his partner-centered approach and demonstrated track record of building capabilities and driving growth in both mature and emerging markets’.

Schultz, who helmed Starbucks for decades, said that ‘as he got the opportunity to get to know Narasimhan, it became clear that he shares the company’s passion for investing in humanity and in our commitment to our partners, customers, and communities’.

“The perspectives he brings will be a strong asset as we build on our heritage in this new era of greater well-being. I greatly look forward to our partnership over the coming months and years,” said Schultz. Narasimhan said he was humbled to join the global coffee giant.

“Starbucks’ commitment to uplift humanity through connection and compassion has long distinguished the company, building an unrivaled, globally admired brand that has transformed the way we connect over coffee,” said Narasimhan.

“I am humbled to be joining this iconic company at such a pivotal time, as the Reinvention and investments in the partner and customer experiences position us to meet the changing demands we face today and set us up for an even stronger future,” he said.

“I look forward to working closely with Howard, the Board, and the entire leadership team and to listening and learning from Starbucks partners as we collectively build on this work to lead the company into its next chapter of growth and impact,” he said. Narasimhan holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the College of Engineering, University of Pune, India.

He has an MA in German and International Studies from The Lauder Institute at The University of Pennsylvania and an MBA in Finance from The Wharton School of The University of Pennsylvania.

The Starbucks statement added that Narasimhan brings nearly 30 years of experience leading and advising global consumer-facing brands. Known for his considerable operational expertise, he has a proven track record in developing purpose-led brands. ‘Building on companies’ histories, he has succeeded in rallying talent to deliver on future ambitions by driving consumer-centric and digital innovations,’ it said. ‘Most recently, as Reckitt CEO, he led the company through a major strategic transformation and a return to sustainable growth,’ it said.

Describing Narasimhan as an inspiring leader, Mellody Hobson, Independent Starbucks Board of Directors’ chair said his deep, hands-on experience driving strategic transformations at global consumer-facing businesses makes him the ideal choice to accelerate Starbucks growth and capture the opportunities ahead of us.

His understanding of our culture and values, coupled with his expertise as a brand builder, innovation champion, and operational leader will be true differentiators as we position Starbucks for the next 50 years, generating value for all our stakeholders, Hobson said. During the transition period, Narasimhan will be fully immersed in the company, spending time with Schultz and the management team, partners and customers and gaining in-depth exposure to the brand, company culture, and Reinvention plan.

This will initially include Starbucks store immersions, visiting manufacturing plants and coffee farms, connecting with partners around the globe as well as Starbucks’ long-term business partners, Starbucks said. Schultz will remain in the role of interim CEO during this transition period, following which he will continue as a member of the Starbucks Board of Directors.

He will remain closely involved with the company’s Reinvention and act as an ongoing advisor to Narasimhan. Previously, Narasimhan held various leadership roles at PepsiCo, including as global chief commercial officer, where he was responsible for the company’s long-term strategy and digital capabilities.

He also served as CEO of the company’s Latin America, Europe and Sub-Saharan Africa operations, and previously as the CEO of PepsiCo Latin America, and the CFO of PepsiCo Americas Foods. Prior to PepsiCo, Narasimhan was a senior partner at McKinsey & Company, where he focused on its consumer, retail and technology practices in the US, Asia and India and led the firm’s thinking on the future of retail. Fancy Number Plates, Stickers On Motors May Cost You Rs 1500 Challan

The city’s traffic department has increased the fine to Rs 1,500 for those who install fancy number plates and unnecessary stickers on their vehicles.

In the city these days, many young people are seen riding bikes and driving cars with flashy numbers and stickers. They also manipulate the numbers so that it is impossible to determine what the actual registration number is.

According to the new orders, the traffic department has increased the fine for vehicles with such licence plates. The Motor Vehicles Act governs all aspects of automobiles. It includes provisions for vehicle registration, such as vehicle size, number plate colour, and number plate colour. Any deviation from the established regulations constitutes a violation of the act.

“The majority of the violations are seen on sporting bikes and cruiser bikes.” The riders creatively stick their names and the names of family members.

The number of violations is less this year compared to last year. Traffic cops deployed at squares across the city have been instructed to recover a fine of 1,500 from each driver violating the rule.”

FOGSI Inks MoU with NABH to Collaborate for Improving Quality Standards for Maternal Healthcare in India

FOGSI Inks MoU with NABH to Collaborate for Improving Quality Standards for Maternal Healthcare in India
FOGSI Inks MoU with NABH to Collaborate for Improving Quality Standards for Maternal Healthcare in India

The Federation of Obstetricians and Gynaecological Societies of India (FOGSI), India’s professional organization representing practitioners of obstetrics and gynaecology, today, announced its collaboration with the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH)/Quality Council of India (QCI), India’s apex body for accreditation and quality promotion, to advance the Government’s vision to improve the quality of maternity services. This collaboration will ensure ‘One Nation One Standard’ where Maternity service providers (MSP’s) will be jointly assessed by NABH and FOGSI.

This is a crucial quality-improvement sectoral collaboration aimed at reducing maternal mortality in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and strengthening health systems for safer childbirth in India. Under the MoU hospitals and nursing homes having maternal care facilities, clinical standards will be assessed, ensuring consistent, safe, and respectful care for mothers during and after childbirth. This collaboration is envisaged to improve and standardize quality across all MCH facilities in the country, a landmark step in our evolving health system.

Emphasizing the need for quality at the foundational level, Dr. Mahesh Verma, Chairman of National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH) said, “We are driven to develop a culture of excellence, enhance healthcare systems, and promote continuous quality improvement and patient safety. We are delighted to collaborate with FOGSI to enhance maternal health standards in the country with its flagship initiative, Manyata.”

Dr. Atul Mohan Kochhar, CEO of National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH) added, “Improving the quality of maternal healthcare in the country is certainly the need of the hour as India has one of the highest numbers of maternal deaths in the world. We strongly believe that it is imperative to lift the quality standards in maternal healthcare to be able to improve our health outcomes overall. This collaboration with FOGSI is a crucial step forward to strengthen the maternal health ecosystem across the country.”

Dr. S. Shantha Kumari, President, FOGSI, and Treasurer, FIGO, said, “Embedding standards for quality of care in health systems hold great potential in reducing maternal mortality and achieving the health-related SDG targets. However, in India, despite the increase in the number of women delivered in facilities, maternal mortality remains alarmingly high, suggesting gaps in quality of care. The current SRS data suggests that India’s maternal mortality ratio (MMR) has improved to 103 in 2017-19, from 167 in 2011-13, highlighting improvements in our health systems but we still have a lot of ground to cover. With around 50% of women in the country delivering in private maternity hospitals, there is an urgent need for the adoption of clinical standards by the obstetric community. We welcome the collaboration with NABH that will only promise better outcomes and health for women in India.”

Dr. Hrishikesh D. PaiPresident-Elect, FOGSI, and Chief Administrator, FOGSI-Manyata initiative, added, “We are delighted to come together with NABH towards improving the quality of maternity care as well as access to this care with Manyata so that every woman in the country receives quality services wherever and whenever she seeks care. This collaboration is a significant milestone and will strengthen our commitment to providing equitable and high-quality maternal care in India.”

Dr. Hema Divakar, National Convener, FOGSI-Manyata initiative said, “A decade of efforts has shown us that it is worth investing in strengthening maternal health care systems so as to bridge the gap between knowing and doing. Upskilling of existing human resources has made a huge impact on the quality of care in the Manyata accredited centers.”

This collaboration will involve quality care sensitization workshops for Maternity Service Providers (MSPs) aimed at creating a pool of FOGSI specialists to assess facilities for NABH quality accreditation and assessments of MSPs by NABH as per FOGSI’s Manyata standards.

Although the share of India’s institutional deliveries has increased to 88.6% in 2019-2021 (NFHS 5), the country has one of the highest numbers of maternal deaths, globally. A considerable proportion of maternal mortality is in fact due to preventable causes such as obstetric haemorrhage, pregnancy-related infections and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. To address this, the Government of India has increasingly prioritised quality maternal care by instituting quality improvement programmes in public health facilities. However, with a significant proportion of women choosing private care to deliver, the private sector plays a critical role in providing quality maternal care to women. This highlights the need for a national system to oversee the quality of maternity care among private providers and thereby improve maternal health outcomes.

To bridge this gap, FOGSI has been driving Manyata since 2013, a programme that promotes the adoption and practice of 16 clinical standards based on the World Health Organization’s (WHO) standards of quality care for antenatal, intrapartum and postpartum care. The programme evidence by Ariadne Labs (Affiliated to Harvard) shows a 70% increase in Manyata facilities being able to manage life-threatening complications, such as obstructed labour, pre-eclampsia and/or eclampsia, and postpartum haemorrhage greatly improved. Manyata’s footprint spans 22 states across a network of 1500 facilities in the country. It is a first-of-its-kind initiative which is building the capacities of healthcare workforce and providing certification, thereby setting a benchmark for maternal quality care. Manyata has laid the foundation for self-driven awareness and demand in Quality improvement amongst facilities and with this collaboration endeavours to scale together with NABH. The initiative is powering innovation through social health entrepreneurs and institutional business models as part of its sustainability and scale-up strategy. It has the potential to be replicated in nations with similar socio-economic demographic and mixed health systems.

Hence, the sectoral collaboration between NABH and FOGSI can create a paradigm shift in the maternal health ecosystem by complementing each other’s efforts to reach more mothers and create a more significant impact.

In addition to enrolling young Agri-entrepreneurs, Bayer understands the major role women play in shaping their families and the agriculture value chain. Their role as influencers in buying decisions makes them the perfect partners to scale up the program.

The program will be further fueled by the adoption of smartphones and evolving digital technologies that have created new touchpoints with farmers. The Sahbhaagis have been trained and equipped to recommend the right solutions to smallholder farmers as per local farm conditions. The smallholder growers get access to Bayer products digitally with the assistance of the Sahbhaagi This program is currently active in 24 states, across more than 470 districts and 1980 sub-districts.

Speaking about the program, Simon-Thorsten Wiebusch, Country Divisional Head – Crop Science Division of Bayer for India, Bangladesh & Sri Lanka said, “In our broad effort to transform agricultural practices for the benefit of local communities, we aim to provide opportunities to micro-entrepreneurs to encourage sustainable and responsible farming and support rural productivity. Bayer will continue to work closely with these Sahbhaagis to create a sustainable ecosystem in their villages, adopting the latest agricultural and farming practices, learning the technical know-how of Bayer products and offering customized crop and product advisory to farmers.”

Bayer has also set up a toll-free number 18001204049 to provide more details to the rural population and facilitate enrollment in the Sahbhaagi program.

Union Asset Management Company Private Limited (“Union AMC”) announces the launch of Union Retirement Fund

August , 2022 : Union AMC announces the launch of Union Retirement Fund. It is an open-ended retirement solution oriented scheme having a lock-in of 5 years or till retirement age (whichever is earlier).

Union Retirement Fund comes at a time when companies across industries are being challenged by record attrition. The structure of the Scheme has also been designed to help customers in achieving the required discipline. The Scheme comes with a compulsory lock in of 5 years or retirement age whichever is earlier and offers only an equity investment plan.

Mr. G. Pradeepkumar, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Union AMC, said “Union Retirement Fund is not just an NFO. It is a bugle that calls for serious introspection amongst all stakeholders to dovetail Aspiration planning with Financial planning. Renewment planning is how one meticulously plans for Freedom in a disciplined manner. It goes beyond just planning for the pursuit or accumulation of wealth.”

Indian Oil to go Net Zero by 2046

Indian Oil to go Net Zero by 2046

August 2022, New Delhi: IndianOil, India’s largest fuel refiner and retailer, has resolved to achieve net-zero operational emissions by the year 2046. IndianOil’s decarbonisation plans encompass both Scope 1 & 2 emissions. Mr Shrikant Madhav Vaidya, Chairman, IndianOil, made the announcement during the Company’s 63rd Annual General Meeting, held today. The year 2046 coincides with India completing 99 years of independence and the celebration of its 100th Independence Day.

This historic declaration by the country’s energy major, aligns with India’s net zero commitment by 2070 announced as part of the Panchamrit goals by the Hon’ble Prime Minister at the COP-26 Summit last year.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr S M Vaidya, Chairman, IndianOil, said, “As we embark on the net-zero journey in the right earnest, we already have a well-crafted blueprint in place. It adopts a multi-pronged approach to take us gradually towards the net zero destination. We have envisaged that an investment of over Rs. 2 lakh crore will be required to achieve the target by the year 2046. IndianOil has been pursuing a robust green agenda for some time now, to steer the country’s green energy transition. So we are already working on several emission mitigation pathways like green hydrogen, biofuels, renewables, carbon offsetting through ecosystem restoration and Carbon Capture Utilisation and Storage (CCUS), among others”.

Sharing details on IndianOil’s net zero strategy, Mr Vaidya added, “IndianOil plans to achieve two-thirds of emission reduction through energy efficiency, electrification and fuel replacement efforts, while about a third of the total emission would be mitigated through options such as CCUS, nature based solutions and purchase of carbon credits”.

Currently, IndianOil’s Green House Gas (GHG) emission, emanating majorly from the Company’s refining operations, stands around 21.5 million metric tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (MMTCO2e) per annum. Out of the total emissions, 96% are on account of processes like direct fuel burning for deriving energy from heat, steam, electricity and cooling, that are part of operations. These constitute the Scope-1 emissions. The balance 4% are on account of sourcing electricity from the grid which constitutes Scope-2 emissions.

Under the Patient Education Initiative of Wockhardt Hospitals Nagpur, Dr Gunjan Loney,

Consultant – Hematologist and Hemato – Oncologist.

What is ITP?Immune thrombocytopenia (formerly known as idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura) is a medical term for an autoimmune disorder causing a shortage of platelets and bruising.

Causes:The immune system mistakes the platelets as being foreign and destroys them. It can follow a virus, vaccination or certain medications, but for most people the cause is unknown. These are of three types:

Acute ITP – that arises suddenly

Persistent ITP- if the platelet count remains low after 3 months

Chronic ITP- if the platelet count has not returned to normal after 12 months.

What are platelets? There are three types of blood cell which are all formed in the bone marrow; red cells, white cells and platelets. Platelets, which are small and sticky and circulate in the bloodstream, provide the initial plug to stop bruising and bleeding after an injury. Normal platelet count is between 150 to 400 (x 109/l).

Many people with ITP have a platelet count in single figures. The number of platelets circulating in our bodies fluctuate all the time, and thus no two consecutive platelet counts are likely to be exactly the same either in a healthy person or in an ITP sufferer.

What are the symptoms of ITP?Some people with ITP, especially those with a count over 50, may have no symptoms at all, and their ITP is only noticed during a routine blood test.

Even people with very low counts, can sometimes have few symptoms.

Common symptoms are:

  • Petechiae (pinprick rash of blood spots on skin)
  • bruising
  • nosebleeds
  • Gum bleeds
  • Black mouth blisters
  • Fatigue
  • Heavy periods

When to seek help? You should contact the hospital in the following circumstances:A prolonged (over 30 minutes) nosebleed which will not stop despite pinching the noseProlonged gum bleedingBlood in the faeces or urineA heavy blow to the headPersistent or severe headache with loss of vision, vomiting or drowsinessVery heavy periods (eg. lasting 8 -10 days, changing more than 4-5 pads per day, passing clots on 2 consecutive days)

Diagnosis:ITP is usually diagnosed by a blood test showing that only the platelet count is low, the red blood cells and white blood cells all look normal.

Additional blood tests may be taken at this time to exclude rare clotting or immune diseases that can mimic ITP.

A bone marrow studies may be done if the ITP continues, in which a small sample of bone marrow will be taken under local anaesthetic and examined under the microscope

Reliance Retail launched its WhatsApp-JioMart partnership, for customers to place orders on the messaging service, director Isha Ambani said at the 45th annual general meeting of Reliance Industries (RIL).

“The objective of this business is to develop and deliver high quality, affordable products which solve every Indian’s daily needs,” Isha said.

The company already has its own brands in staples, home, personal care and general merchandise and with this foray, Reliance Retail will be competing, inter alia, with majors Hindustan Unilever, Dabur, Nestle and Marico.

A demonstration was made on how to browse the grocery catalogue, add items to the cart, make payment and place an order on JioMart through WhatsApp.

“Our grocery business is the largest in India, serving daily needs of our customers through a network of nearly 2,500 stores, and digital commerce platforms JioMart and Milkbasket. We launched Freshpik, a gourmet format, and rolled out 7-Eleven for on-the-go customers,” Isha said.

“The company, under its new commerce initiative, grew its merchant partner base to over 20 lakh partners and adds about 1,50,000 partners a month. It is on course to partner with one crore merchants more to expand across the country, serving over 7,500 towns and three lakh villages in the next five years,” she said.

Desi ghee                               1/3 cup

ET Money’s ‘India Investor Personality Report 2022’ decodes investors’ minds; gives insights into unique investing behaviors and patterns

ET Money's ‘India Investor Personality Report 2022’ decodes investors' minds; gives insights into unique investing behaviors and patterns
ET Money's ‘India Investor Personality Report 2022’ decodes investors' minds; gives insights into unique investing behaviors and patterns

August 2022: ET Money, one of India’s largest Mutual Funds apps & fastest growing Investment Advisory Platform, recently released an exclusive report titled “India Investment Personality Report 2022” that looks into the minds of lakhs of investors. The insights have been drawn from their unique feature of Investor Personality assessment that assesses investors on four key parameters of risk tolerance, loss aversion, financial mastery, and overconfidence levels and draws a map of their unique investor psyche.

The assessment gives investors 8 unique Investor Personality tags that are closest to the type of investor they are. The report reveals that the majority of Indian investors are Strategizers (35%) – a type of investors who are action takers willing to take calculated risks. This is followed by Explorers (31%) – investors who are smart and, at times, overconfident risk takers.

The other investor personality types – Protector, Analyzer, Seeker, Adventurer, Researcher, and Observer- constitute the country’s remaining 34% of investors.

As per the report, Indians have an average risk tolerance range between 52 and 81 which means they are comfortable taking a decent amount of risk when it comes to investing. While high-risk tolerance can deliver good outcomes over the long term, the report also shows that investors with low-risk tolerance are also investing heavily in equities, indicating risk-taking capacity is being ignored. The report further indicates that the majority of Indians have low comfort levels with respect to incurring losses. Yet they are taking high risks, which is bound to make them uncomfortable during market volatility.

Interestingly, as per the report, Indian investors with high financial mastery are making strategic lumpsum investments along with their ongoing SIPs as opposed to investors with lower financial mastery who are sticking to only SIPs. Further on the positive side, women investors are seen to be more organized and well-planned, which is evident with them having a higher share in personality types of Strategizers and Researchers compared to men.

Commenting on the release of this exclusive report, Mukesh Kalra, Founder and CEO of ET Money, said, “Your investment biases impact how your money grows. And being aware of these biases can help you make smarter investing decisions. The ‘ET Money India Investor Personality Report 2022’ helps us look at the real-time situation, i.e. Indian investors are blindly chasing returns without considering their risk tolerance. Making better decisions starts with decluttering your thoughts and seeing what is driving your investment decisions. That is one major reason why ET Money Genius, our flagship offering, first understands users’ personality type and then recommends portfolios which are in-line with their risk tolerance levels. The report shows that investing decisions among Indians are driven by high returns and market rush, and there is a need to counteract this widespread behaviour. ET Money Genius, a membership service, in this case, can assist investors in understanding their investment objectives and build portfolios that are highly optimized”.

August, 2022 – Highlighting the need to empower homemakers, Gemini Oil launched a new campaign today, #AajKyaBannaChahtiHo, based upon consumer insights. From a traditionalist who spends time cooking hot, healthy, and nutritious food for her family, the Gemini consumer has evolved to be progressive, who continues to prioritize her family’s health and wellbeing and is passionate about pursuing her dreams. The campaign aims to emphasize the importance of homemakers having the time and support needed to pursue their own aspirations.

This year also marks the 40-year anniversary for the Gemini brand. With the launch of the new campaign, the brand is also transforming its iconic package design and logo across their portfolio of everyday oils, taste oils and Smart Health (wellness oils). The packaging design and logo have been revamped as a salute to the evolving values of the brand’s consumers – representing balance between the time spent to ensures the family’s health through good food and the time spent nurturing her hobbies and passions.

Commenting on the launch of the new campaign, Piyush Patnaik, Managing Director, Cargill’s Oils Business in India said, “Gemini is our flagship brand, with a strong leadership footprint in different parts of the country. The Gemini campaign is a true testimony of the brand’s desire to remain connected to our ever-evolving consumer. We will continue to build on this strong trust that our consumers have in us and provide the best solutions to them for generations to come. We are excited to be partners in our consumers’ journeys of self-discovery and be their go-to brand as they continue to prioritize their family and themselves.”

Talking about the new campaign, Subin Sivan, Marketing Head, Cargill’s Oils Business in India said, “While our consumers’ core is rooted in the wellbeing of their families, their values and choices have evolved over the years, and with the redesigned packaging, logo and new commercial we’re evolving with them. ‘Aaj Kya Bana Hai’ is a question that has been posed to almost every woman across the social strata. While the times have changed, this question hasn’t changed. Gemini’s new campaign aims to support the evolving homemaker by encouraging everyone to change the question from ‘Aaj Kya Bana Hai’ to ‘Aaj Kya Banna Chahti Ho’. This is possibly the first step to salute the spirit of the evolving homemaker and enable them to unlock time for their passions and aspirations.”

The new packaging for Gemini Oils will be available to consumers in stores across Maharashtra and Goa, starting August 25, 2022.

5G Services To Be Out In India By Oct 12

5G Services To Be Out In India By Oct 12

India is gearing up for the roll out of 5G services by October 12, Union Communications, Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Thursday.

Talking to media persons, Vaishnaw said 5G services will be scaled up after launch and should reach every part of the country in the next two to three years.

“We are planning to roll out 5G services rapidly. The telecom operators are working in that regard and installations are being done. Hopefully, we should be launching 5G services by October and then would further scale up in cities. Our expectations are that 5G should reach every part of the country in the next two to three years. We will ensure that it remains affordable. The industry is focusing on both urban as well as rural areas,” he said.

The Centre on Thursday launched the 5G RoW (Right of Way) application form on the Gati Shakti sanchar portal. The Minister said a common portal for all states has been made to have a central stop-shop for entry of infrastructure applications and approvals.

Last week, the government has issued spectrum allocation letters to telecom service providers while asking them to prepare for the rollout of 5G services in the country.

With this spectrum allotment, India entered the final stage of rolling out high-speed 5G telecom services.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his address to the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort on Independence Day, said India’s “techade” is here as the government is focusing on technologies such as 5G, semiconductor manufacturing and optical fibre cables.

These technologies, PM Modi said, will bring about a revolution at the grassroots level.

“India’s techade is here! With 5G, semiconductor manufacturing and OFCs in villages, we are bringing a revolution through Digital India to the grassroots level,” he said at Red Fort.

5G is the fifth-generation mobile network capable of transmitting a large set of data at a very rapid speed.

In comparison to 3G and 4G, 5G has a very low latency which will enhance user experiences in various sectors. Low latency describes the efficiency to process a very high volume of data messages with a minimal delay.

The 5G rollout is also expected to bring more development in remote data monitoring in sectors such as mining, warehousing, tele medicine, and manufacturing, among others.

Reliance Jio, Adani group, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea were the four major participants in the spectrum auction.

Department of Telecom received total bids worth Rs 1.50 lakh crore from the recently concluded auction.

5G services are expected to be about 10 times faster than 4G.
