Israel is to name a planned new railway station close to Judaism’s hallowed Western Wall in annexed east Jerusalem after US President Donald Trump, the transport minister has said.
Trump has been lauded by the Jewish state – and sparked international condemnation – by breaking with years of US policy to recognise the holy city as Israel’s capital.
Minister Israel Katz approved a plan on Tuesday to extend a high-speed rail line under construction between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem into the Jewish Quarter of the Old City and build a station next to the Western Wall, a statement said.
The station close to the holiest site where Jews are permitted to pray will be called “Donald John Trump“, the minister ordered, in tribute to his “historic and courageous decision” on Jerusalem.
Trump’s controversial shift on the holy city has sparked angry protests by Palestinians and was rejected in a non-binding UN General Assembly resolution.
Israel seized the eastern part of Jerusalem – including the Western Wall – in the Six-Day War of 1967 and later annexed it in a move not recognised by the international community.
Israelis see the whole city as their indivisible capital, while the Palestinians view the east as the capital of their future state.
The Western Wall, the last remnant of the second Jewish temple, is at the foot of the Haram al-Sharif compound housing the Al-Aqsa mosque and the golden-topped Dome of the Rock, the third holiest site in Islam.
The new railway line is scheduled to start linking Tel Aviv and Jerusalem in 2018, cutting the journey time to less than 30 minutes.
The ministry puts the cost of the 35-miles line, which will also serve the town of Modiin and Ben Gurion airport, at around seven billion shekels (£1.5bn).
The World Health Organization is adding an unexpected gaming disorder to its list of mental health conditions in 2018. Next year, people who play an excessive amount of video games could find themselves diagnosed with “gaming disorder.”
WHO’s beta draft of its upcoming 11th update of International Classification of Diseasescharacterizes gaming disorder as “a pattern of persistent or recurrent gaming behaviour (‘digital gaming’ or ‘video-gaming’), which may be online (i.e., over the internet) or offline, manifested by: 1) impaired control over gaming (e.g., onset, frequency, intensity, duration, termination, context); 2) increasing priority given to gaming to the extent that gaming takes precedence over other life interests and daily activities; and 3) continuation or escalation of gaming despite the occurrence of negative consequences.”
The inclusion of gaming disorder in the ICD-11 means health care workers and doctors can now diagnose someone with the condition.
The description of the condition continues: “The behaviour pattern is of sufficient severity to result in significant impairment in personal, family, social, educational, occupational or other important areas of functioning. The pattern of gaming behaviour may be continuous or episodic and recurrent. The gaming behaviour and other features are normally evident over a period of at least 12 months in order for a diagnosis to be assigned, although the required duration may be shortened if all diagnostic requirements are met and symptoms are severe.”
Not everyone who likes to play video games has gaming disorder — plenty of people play video games without getting a diagnosis. Daphne Bavelier, a professor at the University of Geneva said, depending on the game, and how long and often you play it, video games can be a safe way of improving hand-eye coordination, enhancing problem-solving abilities, relieving stress, connecting people, and living out fantasies, Forbes reported.
Gaming becomes a problem only when it causes “impairment in personal, family, social, educational, occupational or other important areas of functioning.” When you stop controlling the game and it starts controlling you — that’s when WHO’s definition of gaming disorder applies.
Video games have become increasingly popular, with more people of all ages playing a variety of games. Because of this, video game addiction has also become a problem. The fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) published in 2013 defined internet gaming disorder as a “condition for further study.” This doesn’t classify it as an official disorder, rather one the American Psychiatric Association says requires additional research. According to the DSM-5, the disorder is most common in male adolescents 12 to 20 years old.
Additionally, a 2009 study found about 8 percent of people from 8 to 18 years old “exhibited pathological patterns of play.” So, while people should continue to enjoy their downtime unwinding with the latest game, the medical community wants to make the public aware, too much of a good thing can be bad.
Children who eat fish at least once a week sleep better and have IQ scores that are 4 points higher, on average, than those who consume fish less frequently or not at all. These findings from the University of Pennsylvania are published in Scientific Reports, a Nature journal.
Previous studies showed a relationship between omega-3s, the fatty acids in many types of fish, and improved intelligence, as well as omega-3s and better sleep. But they’ve never all been connected before. This work, conducted by Jianghong Liu, Jennifer Pinto-Martin, and Alexandra Hanlon of the School of Nursing and Penn Integrates Knowledge Professor Adrian Raine, reveals sleep as a possible mediating pathway, the potential missing link between fish and intelligence.
“This area of research is not well-developed. It’s emerging,” says Liu, lead author on the paper and an associate professor of nursing and public health, in a release. “Here we look at omega-3s coming from our food instead of from supplements.”
For the work, a cohort of 541 9- to 11-year-olds in China, 54% boys and 46% girls, completed a questionnaire about how often they consumed fish in the past month, with options ranging from “never” to “at least once per week.” They also took the Chinese version of an IQ test called the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised, which examines verbal and non-verbal skills such as vocabulary and coding.
Their parents then answered questions about sleep quality using the standardized Children Sleep Habits Questionnaire, which included topics such as sleep duration and frequency of night waking or daytime sleepiness. Finally, the researchers controlled for demographic information, including parental education, occupation, and marital status as well as number of children in the home.
Analyzing these data points, the Penn team found that children who reported eating fish weekly scored 4.8 points higher on the IQ exams than those who said they “seldom” or “never” consumed fish. Those whose meals sometimes included fish scored 3.3 points higher. In addition, increased fish consumption was associated with fewer disturbances of sleep, which the researchers say indicates better overall sleep quality.
“Lack of sleep is associated with antisocial behavior; poor cognition is associated with antisocial behavior,” says Raine, who has appointments in the School of Arts and Sciences and Penn’s Perelman School of Medicine. “We have found that omega-3 supplements reduce antisocial behavior, so it’s not too surprising that fish is behind this.”
Pinto-Martin, who is executive director of Penn’s Center for Public Health Initiatives, as well as the Viola MacInnes/Independence Professor of Nursing and a professor of epidemiology in Penn Medicine, sees strong potential for the implications of this research.
“It adds to the growing body of evidence showing that fish consumption has really positive health benefits and should be something more heavily advertised and promoted,” she says. “Children should be introduced to it early on.” That could be as young as 10 months, as long as the fish has no bones and has been finely chopped, but should start by around age 2.
“Introducing the taste early makes it more palatable,” Pinto-Martin says. “It really has to be a concerted effort, especially in a culture where fish is not as commonly served or smelled. Children are sensitive to smell. If they’re not used to it, they may shy away from it.”
Given the young age of this study group, Liu and colleagues chose not to analyze the details participants reported about the types of fish consumed, though they plan to do so for work on an older cohort in the future. The researchers also want to add to this current observational study to establish, through randomized controlled trials, that eating fish can lead to better sleep, better school performance and other real-life, practical outcomes.
For the moment, the researchers recommend incrementally incorporating additional fish into a diet; consumption even once a week moves a family into the “high” fish-eating group as defined in the study.
“Doing that could be a lot easier than nudging children about going to bed,” Raine says. “If the fish improves sleep, great. If it also improves cognitive performance—like we’ve seen here—even better. It’s a double hit.”
Future of Bitcoin in 2018: Around 2009 a new concept of currency was introduced. The concept seemed a little vague about the usage of this currency but two years later, Bitcoins has emerged as a fast catching trend. Proclaimed as a decentralized digital currency, more people and business have started using Bitcoins. Though the currency is still in its experimental stage regular updating and frequent tweaking is done to improve it in every way possible. Unlike other banking networks Bitcoins are not controlled by anyone. The network has a set of protocols protected by cryptography. It’s a new payment system which has no central authority other than the cryptography (open source software working with the laws of mathematics) which handles the creation and transaction, making it impossible to cheat around the system. The Bitcoins share a public ledger (blockchain ledger) where every transaction is recorded making it a prominent triple entry bookkeeping system and a transparent recorder. Using the peer to peer system and a cryptographic key, transactions are processed between clients. As the key cannot be deciphered it’s a more safe form of internet cash than performing transactions with credit and debit cards.
Future of Bitcoin as with every new emerging trend, the Bitcoins have advantages and disadvantages. But if the obstacles are removed, it might help re-imaging of International finance.
The users have total control over the money, they can send and receive any amount of payments at time of the day. As these transactions are not performed by banks or organizations but between individuals it’s easy as sending a file.
The transactions require no or very less money compared to other online money transfers which stick up a hefty fee, the only service in Bitcoins is done by the miners to facilitate the transaction recording on the block and that doesn’t cost much.
This is the most secure and irreversible form of cash transactions where no personal information is traded. Most people will opt for this method as it removes major hassles involved in other transactions.
Large markets and small businesses have widely accepted it as it helps in quicker and reliable money transfers with very little administration cost.
When other currencies are affected by price fluctuations, the same cannot be said for Bitcoins.
The disadvantages of Bitcoins are listed below though they can be turned around. The new rules and updates are being constantly worked on by various trusted parties to help shape this up.
There is no guarantee and no purchasing power provided yet.
The Bitcoin price has yet to stabilize, which can only happen when the number of users and businesses using bitcoins increase.
Client programs used as wallets cannot guarantee or provide insurance on the Bitcoins.
The currency has yet to mature and get a better hold on the market.
The challenges faced by Bitcoins can be easily deterred. But the currency needs a stronger presence and better guarantees on the safety before it can be accepted widely by the public as the easiest form of online currency. The concept at present is a successful online currency venture which is on an adventurous trail it has yet to be legalized and changed from an experimental currency. Though the future of Bitcoin is nothing but speculation, it has a positive response from all its users and might just be the next big thing.

Yo Yo Honey Singh, who fought with bipolar disorder and has recovered now, is all set for a grand comeback with a song in Luv Ranjan’s Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety. Titled Dil Chori.
Makers of the film, starring Kartik Aaryan, Nushrat Bharucha and Sunny Singh, shared a teaser of the song over the weekend.
The song’s title reminds us of a hit number by Hans Raj Hans from the 90s, Dil Chori Saada Ho Gaya.
Sonu ke Titu Ki Sweety is the first of a three-film contract between T Series and Luv Ranjan. It is said to be a quirky, new age love triangle set in Delhi and UP.
After a controversial absence from the public scene following reports of a fight with Shah Rukh Khan and being in a rehab, Honey Singh said in an interview last year, “Nobody knows this, and I wanted to tell the world myself, not through a spokesperson. The last 18 months were the darkest phase of my life, and I wasn’t in a state to talk to anyone. I know there were rumours that I was in rehab, but I was in my Noida house throughout. Truth is, I was suffering from bipolar disorder. It went on for 18 months, during which I changed four doctors, the medication wasn’t working and crazy things were happening.”
Before his latest tweet, Honey had also shared pictures from the Ganges, and dropped hints in his tweet that he was working on a song. “Chillin at Ganges. Makin #BEATS writing #VERSES. “Jai Ganga Maiya Ki” #YoYo #YoYoHoneySingh #Music,” he tweeted last week.
The Punjabi rapper has been reportedly spending nearly 12 hours a day in studios, making new songs and is likely to reveal the new song around the New Year.
His last song was Aankhon Aankhon from Bhaag Johnny (2015).
High Heels, Blue Eyes, Lungi Dance, Dope Shope, Desi Kalakaar and Angrezi Beat are some of his most popular hits that continue to rule hearts and disco parties.
Produced by Luv Films’ Luv Ranjan, Ankur Garg and Bhushan Kumar and Krishan Kumar of T-Series, the film is slated to be released on November 3.

“Government! Government! What do I get for all I give, I would like to know! Potholes and Bombs!,” Says Cecil Dawkins of Birmingham, Alabama.
Nagpur: The city that holds nearly 3 million people together and carries a literacy rate of 92.38%, here the matter of potholes is wholly mind-boggling. To be precise, out of every 5 road-accidents that surface in Nagpur, 2 occur due to craters.
In the city tyranny of potholes is more severe than it appears to the naked eye. A pothole is both like the Crucio Curse and the Killing Curse, for it takes numerous lives daily and brings perilous desecration to others.
According to the reports, 30 people die in pothole related accidents every day in India. Noticing the hurricane, our team at Our Nagpur Media carried out a survey, on Thursday 21st December, and the results we got were odious. A visit to Loha Pul area and we found out that within the range of just 40 meters there were 68 potholes. Condition of the Gangabai Ghat Road was no different. On the patch amidst Gangabai Ghat Square and Kumbhar Toli Chowk, the stretch has almost 30 potholes.
Several other roads in the city are in a very bad condition too. North Ambazari Road, Meetha Neem Durgah, Shanti Nagar, Katol road, Sakkardara, Nag Road, Old Bhandara Road, Itwari, Chandrashekhar Azad Square, these are some areas where the conditions seems to have intensified.
The most gigantic pothole in the city is 4ft long, 3ft wide and 1ft deep. Apart from this, there are potholes of various sizes too. Bad roads have caused humongous number of accidents in Nagpur in the last few years and with every passing day the City is witnessing more such cases that now potholes have become matter of life and death for the people residing in Nagpur and for the people who travel to Nagpur for work. Traffic police even claimed and pointed-out that two-wheeler riders are more disposed to accidents due to potholes.
Now it’s no more just the matter or bad roads, slow traffic and wastage of fuel. Pothole has erupted like a volcano, like a tornado it is coming. And, if we keep ignoring it, a day will come where we too would fall prey to this beast.
And, the saddest thing is that even in the winter session time potholes remain the same, unaltered. Looks like NMC (Nagpur Municipal Corporation) doesn’t seem to care a bit about the citizens at all. Even after watching death cuddle a 12 year old son of SRPF head constable everyone seems to be at ease. No one seems to be eager enough to bring life to this city of ours.
So, there’s just this one solution I can think of. As we live in a Democratic Country, we must stand our ground. Just voting a particular party and bringing it to power is not our duty. Our duty is to bring change. Our duty is to bring peace to this world where there is nothing but chaos. Wake up fellow Nagpurians, it’s time for us to come together. It’s time for us to take action against the evil. It sure is a bit slow process, but at the end of the day, whilst you’ll be sipping tea or your coffee, you’ll feel content to have helped a bit into making this world a better place. What we must understand here is that we hold this world the same way it’s holding us. It’s nourished us, pruned us over time. It’s given us all that it could. But, now, as it turns out, it’s probably time for us to heal all the scars that we have given to it. We need to bring change and lift the world up with our soul. We need to have faith in the goodness that we all carry. We need to come together as colleagues and make good things happen. We can’t let the world that’s cherished us like a mother turn to dust. We mustn’t accept an evil we can change. In order to make this world a better place we needn’t carry the bulk of the whole issues going on in the world, one good deed at a time is enough. After all it’s not the magnitude of the candle that lights up a dark room, but the size of the light it emits. Think about it. You’ll see the brightest place of all.

After hitting a low of $12,560 on Friday, bitcoin price recoup and trade at $14,000 on the Luxembourg-based BitStamp soon after Belarus announced that Belarus Country Gives Legitimacy transactions in Bitcoin. This move is the part of a drive to foster private sector growth and attract foreign investment by liberalising parts of its Soviet-style economy. President Alexander Lukashenko signed a decree on the move on Thursday, his press service said. Bitcoin, the world’s most popular crypto-currency, has lost a third of its value since hitting a record high of close to $20,000 on Sunday, but its supporters dismiss warnings over volatility and say it is the start of a new monetary system not dependent on central banks.
The former Soviet republic, squeezed between Russia and the European Union, is still dominated by the state, weighed down by bureaucracy and inefficient state-owned enterprises, and dependent on Russian money and subsidies.
But Lukashenko, a former collective farm manager who once called the internet “garbage”, has introduced some reforms to improve the business climate and shore up the economy after recession in 2015 and 2016.
The decree is a breakthrough for Belarus,” Anton Myakishev, the head of Microsoft’s Belarus office, told Reuters.
“It gives the industry the possibility to make a leap forward in its development and allows foreign capital the possibility to come to Belarus and work in comfortable conditions.”
The decree legalises initial coin offerings and transactions in Bitcoin, including their exchange for traditional currencies on Belarussian exchanges, while all trades will be tax-free for the next five years.
Belarus Country Gives Legitimacy has developed some globally recognised IT brands, belying an image of a country stuck in a Soviet time warp.
The decree is designed to attract digital coin entrepreneurs, who are moving businesses to locations more welcoming to Bitcoin Price as they face intensifying scrutiny from regulators over digital currency fund-raising, known as initial coin offerings.
“The decree is a breakthrough for Belarus,” Anton Myakishev, the head of Microsoft’s Belarus office
“It give, told Reuters.es the industry the possibility to make a leap forward in its development and allows foreign capital the possibility to come to Belarus and work in comfortable conditions.”
The decree legalises initial coin offerings and transactions in Bitcoin, including their exchange for traditional currencies on Belarussian exchanges, while all trades will be tax-free for the next five years.
It also allows local IT companies to operate in part under English law – a boon to potential foreign investors, who can struggle to navigate the Belarussian legal system.
“We regularly faced legal problems. When a Western company buys a Belarussian company they try to structure the deal outside Belarus,” said Denis Aleinikov, senior partner in a private law firm Aleinikov and Partners in Minsk and the main author of the decree.
“Investors don’t want to deal with Belarussian legislation,” he told Reuters.
Viktor Prokopenya, a prominent investor in the Belarussian IT sector, said Reuters the legislation and other measures showed the government fully supported the industry.
The Belarussian IT sector has flourished despite the country’s wider economic slump, attracting foreign workers, expatriate Belarussians and locals to jobs that pay about five times the average wage.
Dozens of software companies operate in Minsk’s high-tech IT park, including U.S.-based EPAM Systems, founded by two Belarussians in 1993. Belarussian software engineers are also behind the Japanese-controlled Viber messenger and the popular video game World of Tanks.
The bright outlook for the IT industry is not matched in other sectors of the Belarussian economy, which remains hamstrung by loss-making state-owned companies that have seen little or no reform since the collapse of the Soviet Union.
The economy is expected to return to growth of 1.7 percent this year, but the International Monetary Fund in November said growth will remain around 2 percent annually over the next few years if state-run heavy industries don’t modernise
Nagpur: The state government assured in Assembly on Thursday that an First Information Report (FIR) against construction giants L&T would be filed if they were found to have violated rules of Urban Land Ceiling (ULC). Dr Ranjeet Patil, minister of state for urban development, assured that action would be taken within a week against the company on the basis of report submitted by the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Mumbai suburban collector in case of violation of ULC Act.
Congress legislator Arif Mohammad Naseem Khan raised the issue in the lower house through a calling attention motion and alleged that L& T had violated an ULC Act. Khan said, “L&T company has given an undertaking to the government stating they would use land, admeasuring 1.04 lakh meter which was declared surplus under the ULC Act, only for industrial purposes forever without change of user purpose.”
Khan further said, “The land was declared surplus as per the ULC Act and the government had started the process of acquisition. However, the company gave an understanding assuring that the land would be used for industrial purpose and they wouldn’t change the reservation even in future, which the company has breached.”
“The L&T has changed the use of land from industrial to residential and constructed two towers of 24 storeys each. The company has not even paid the premium of over Rs 1000 crore to the government,” he added.“The company has breached the terms and conditions. Hence, the government should seal both buildings and recover Rs 1000 crore plus and should file an FIR against the company and architect too,” he demanded.
Patil said, “It is a fact that the government had assured an inquiry into the matter and of taking action during the monsoon session. However, the state had asked the BMC and collector to submit their reports to the state and it will be received on December 5.”
“On the basis of report, the government will initiate action in the next seven days. If it is proved that the company is at fault, then an FIR will be filed against the company,” added the minister.
Shiv Sena MLA Sunil Prabhu, while supporting Khan, questioned, “Whether the government or BMC is delaying the action? The government should file an FIR and arrest whoever is responsible.”
Nagpur: The state assembly on Thursday passed the Maharashtra Lifts, Escalators and Moving Walks bill which will ensure that people who use escalators and elevators will be covered under third party insurance by the owner in case of an accident. The bill has restricted life span of lifts of escalators to twenty years.
Minister for energy Chandrashekhar Bawankule said the Maharashtra Lifts Act 1939 hadn’t been amended for past 78 years. The bill was passed in the Assembly without any discussion. It will now be sent to the Council on Friday, the last day of winter session.
The Bill makes ‘Third Party Insurance’ mandatory to the owner of the lift, escalator or moving walk. It has also mentioned the lift, escalator company may be prosecuted and held liable for the punishment under this Act in case of an accident occurs in the lift or escalator due to malfunctioning of any of the safety provision.
The Bill further states that whoever contravenes any of the provisions of this Act or rules or condition of license or electrical inspector shall be punished with a fine up to Rs 50,000 if conviction.
The new Act also makes it mandatory for buildings that have escalators to obtain a license in retrospect
The state government on Thursday declared a Rs 10,886 crore river linking project, asserting that it would not allow a single drop of water from its rivers go unclaimed to the neighbouring state of Gujarat. The government stated that 434 thousand million cubic (TMC) feet of water from the state flowing to Gujarat would be reclaimed from upstream Ukai dam. Therefore, there should be no reason to worry about the state losing its quota of water in the inter-state river linking project.
The work under the national river linking project has been taken up after discussions with Maharashtra, Gujarat and the Centre. Sources said the final draft is under way and the Centre would provide 90 per cent funds. The remaining 10 per cent would be provided by the state government.
The central aspect of the work includes the Damanganga-Pinjal river linking project that would help resolve the drinking water problems of Mumbai. Water from Damanganga Valley, around 579 TMC, would serve the purpose. The project cost of the two river linking project is Rs 2,746 crore.
The state government has pushed four more projects to retain its water share — Nar-Par-Girna (362 TMC ), worth Rs 4,500 crore, Par-Godavari (97 TMC) worth Rs 990 crore, Damanganga-Viatarna-Godavari (202 TMC) worth Rs 1,800 crore and Damanganga-Godavari (143 TMC) worth Rs 850 crore. Apart from the four projects, the Damanganga-Pinjal river linking project of 579 TMC aims at providing drinking water to Mumbai city.
The Opposition went all out on the penultimate day of the winter session, making serious allegations against Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The two senior opposition leaders from NCP, Ajit Pawar and Dhananjay Munde, alleged that Fadnavis was protecting his loyalist from Nagpur in a series of murder cases and had failed as a home minister in controlling the increasing crime in the state.
Aggressive assembly
Ajit Pawar quoted from crime record books and referred to several publications for substantiating his allegations. He asked why Fadnavis was protecting murder accused Munna Yadav, who is chairman of a cash-rich state corporation for construction workers.
Ajit Pawar and Dhananjay Munde said the government had failed in creating any kind of fear in the minds of criminals. “This is a strange government. Ministers give so much ‘respect’ to the officers and employees that they are taken for granted. Someone needs to tell these guys that they are no longer in the opposition but the government,” said Pawar, sarcastically.
“Yadav is absconding, but people say he is seen around in Nagpur, and yet, the police don’t arrest him. This happens despite the DGP asking the CP not to buckle under any political pressure for protecting Munna. Isn’t this shameful for a CP of this city? His boss comes here and raps him, but the officer doesn’t budge.” Pawar said Yadav was given the status of a minister. “Can the CM tell us what is Yadav’s qualification and eligibility for getting such an appointment?”
Calling law and order a cause for concern, Dhananjay Munde told the Upper House that the government didn’t allow anyone to speak, and when anyone talked about the poor law and order, they were branded anti-national. “If the evidence provided by us is fake, then sue us, punish us in a city square, but please verify the evidence and bring the guilty to book,” he said, referring to many crimes across the state and alleged scams in which ministers and bureaucrats were given a clean chit. “The CM is fooling the 11 crore people of Maharashtra.”
“Nagpur is next to Kochi in crime rate. Six people were killed in four hours here early this week. Gang wars are a daily business here. It’s not the rule of law but the rule of bribing. We are ready to take to the streets if home department fails in getting its act together,” said Munde, adding that if Yadav hadn’t been arrested, how could anyone expect the police to arrest the killers of Dr Dabholkar and Prof Pansare.
‘Women unsafe’
The former deputy CM said crime against women was on the rise in Mumbai, where the police had consistently failed in ensuring security for women commuters on the suburban rail network. “There is no adequate police force. Women are violated regularly. Why? This government is insensitive, inefficient and inactive,” said Pawar.
Dhananjay Munde said the state was a topper in crimes against women. “In fact, Maharashtra has surpassed Bihar in all types of crimes. I remember late RR Patil, who took a stern decision to ban dance bars; but now, Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Thane have dance bars running under the garb of discotheques. Recently, the Thane police scrapped licences of 43 bars, but ACS (home) stayed the action in just two days,” he added.
Debating for the government, ruling party members, especially those from BJP, defended the home department and CM. But some Shiv Sena members said they were not happy with police’s handling of certain cases. Fadnavis will respond to the debate on Friday.
Cop-criminal nexus?
Taking the debate to another level, Ajit Pawar said some non-Marathi policemen were suspected to be hand in glove with criminals. “I don’t want to create a controversy over regionalism and language, but what I said should be probed,” he added.
Newlyweds Virat Kohli & Anushka Sharma’s much-anticipated marriage reception was held at the Taj Palace, New Delhi on Thursday night. The glitzy affair saw high-profile people from many walks of life, including Bollywood stars, along with cricketers descended on the venue to celebrate the high-profile couple’s wedding, which was held in Tuscany, Italy on December 11. This is the first reception that the couple, whose ‘Virushka’ tag has gone viral, will be hosting. There is another reception scheduled for December 26 in Mumbai, a day ahead of the Indian team’s departure for South Africa. Anushka will accompany Virat Kohli to South Africa where the Indian captain will join the Indian squad and start preparing for the two-month long series against the Proteas, starting January 5.
Two days back, photos of Virat and Anushka started doing the rounds as the couple spent quality time with their family members, after landed in the national capital after a brief honeymoon in Europe.
Virat and Anushka had also met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to extend him the invitation to attend their marriage reception. The Prime Minister congratulated them on their wedding”, the PMO India handle captioned the image.
It has been reported that Virat will be shifting cities, from his hometown New Delhi to Mumbai where Anushka lives. The couple will be moving into a sea-facing apartment in Mumbai, say reports.
Anushka will spend New Year’s Eve with Virat and return in the first week of January to begin next schedule of a film with Shah Rukh Khan in Mumbai, the actor’s spokesperson had said.

The state government has decided to open 100 international schools to provide quality education to students. The decision was announced Wednesday by School Education Minister Vinod Tawde in the state Assembly session in Nagpur. The decision comes on a day the government adopted the amendment in the Maharashtra Self Financed Schools (Establishment and Regulation) Act, that would allow private companies and the corporate sector to open schools on no-profit-no-loss basis.
Dispelling apprehensions that such a legislation would not serve the poor and help only the rich, Tawde said, “Even today, private players have made inroads in school education. We have only simplified the process.” He assured that the interest of students, including fee regulation, would be protected, and state language Marathi would be promoted in these schools.
The government said the decision to open 100 international schools is to provide a platform to children who cannot afford similar education in private schools.
On a whirlwind global tour for his latest release, Will Smith, along with the cast and crew of Bright, made a pit stop in Mumbai. The Hollywood star regaled Mumbaikars in true style, between his back-to-back interview schedules, meeting with fans, posing for selfies, and even beatboxing to Indian moves prior to the premiere. Netflix’s Bright is a fantasy-thriller directed by David Ayer, which revolves around two Los Angeles-based police officers, Daryl Ward (Will Smith) and Nick Jakoby (Joel Edgerton, the first orc officer), who stumble upon an elf that possesses a magic wand that could unleash the Dark Lord. Though set in modern-day LA, the film has strong fantasy elements featuring orcs and fairies and elves. Will Smith, who at 49, still does his own stunts, talks about the movie, what he wishes audiences take away from it and his favourite foods. (Watch Video of Will Smith Below)
You have been to India a number of times before, anything you would like to do this time around?
Will Smith -The one thing that I’d love to do, but I won’t be able to — it’s a tragedy — is I would love to go back to Akshay’s (Kumar) house for dinner. It was, literally, the best food I’ve ever had in my life. And I’m not going to be able to do that on this trip… I love Chicken Tikka Masala. Oh, my god, yes. Indian food and sushi are my two favourite foods around the world.
On the surface, Bright is a fantasy film but it also deals with racism and other sensitive issues. How pertinent is that in today’s day and age?
For me, that was part of the decision to make Bright. In (writer) Max Landis and (director) David Ayer’s world, the elves are the one percenters of society, they’re the haves and the orcs are the bottom of society, they’re the have-nots. And the humans they are in the middle. For my character as an African American police officer to be racist against orcs, that was such a social flip that I thought it would be fun and interesting to explore and it turned out to be a really informative experience for me around the idea of racism.
Do you feel we as humans have become extremely judgemental?
My experience playing a racist character, I used to think it was about being judgemental, but it’s less about being judgemental and it’s more about an ego- need for comparative superiority. That we need to be better than other people. Everybody is struggling for a sense of comparative superiority that our egos need to look at somebody and say, ‘Hey, we are better than them.’ It is an emotional survival mechanism that lives at the core of all of our isms — racism and sexism and nationalism, we all need ourselves and our group to be better than others. And it’s what’s difficult in the discussions that we have around diversity, for example. In the world of models, people will say you can’t just have models that look like this, you have to have plus size and models of colour and everything but what happens is both groups are struggling for comparative superiority so it’s just one is winning. Whatever group is losing, it feels like they’re right. But it’s actually the same thing, everyone is struggling for that space to feel better. But I do think that technology is forcing a human evolution.
Bright deals with concepts like a magic wand and the Dark Lord. What does that represent to you?
We talked about this a lot on the sets and we decided to stay away from it but the idea of magic being the power of the unknown and magic being hope, being the next evolutionary human superpower. Magic is what will save us from the Dark Lord. Our belief in magic and our belief in something even though we haven’t seen it happen before. In this film, magic was around unity. It was the necessity for all of us to come together in support of our magic and to be able to defeat the Dark Lord which is our lower selves, our base, chaotic, brutal, reptile selves.
Is there any takeaway you want audiences to have from this film?
There’s a really central idea of how we treat and believe and, you know, disrespect one another for our selfish cravings and needs… It’s entertainment, I want people to have fun and enjoy it but I think there’s interesting conversations that could be had definitely around bullying and the treatment of one another.
The film features a lot of intense action stunts and you’re an actor who does his own stunts. Do you enjoy that?
Yeah, that’s just stupid though (laughs). I think I’m done with this, that’s the last movie… There’s one stunt in the movie, there’s a part where my feet are on the back of a car and the car is spinning the wheels and pushing me back and like we actually did that. And I still think that was a good idea. See, I thought Joel said yes (to the stunt), so I said yes, and then I ended up doing mine and then I see Joel’s stuntman going and I’m like, ‘Hey what’s he doing?’ Joel was more cautious but I definitely channelled my inner Tom Cruise on that one.

Nagpur: The Maharashtra government’s contentious slum redevelopment plan, which would entitle even non-protected residents of slums for rehabilitation under its slum redevelopment policy, received the nod of the Legislative Assembly Wednesday, and is now close to becoming a law. While the move has major implications for Mumbai where almost every second resident lives in a slum, the Assembly passed the legislation within minutes without any debate.
Earlier, the state’s law department had raised strong objections to the move. But it was tabled in the Assembly on Wednesday morning. Within minutes of being taken up for discussion in the evening, it was cleared with members of the Opposition not raising any objection. The ruling side will now take the legislation to the Legislative Council Thursday.
Over 52 lakh people reside in slums in the commercial capital, which have some of the highest population densities in the world. While presently only residents of slums in dwelling units that existed before January 1, 2000 are protected against demolition and entitled to free owned rehabilitation in a slum redevelopment plan, the government has now proposed to accommodate even ineligible slum dwellers in the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) scheme.
On the basis of the Centre’s ‘Housing for All’ initiative, it has now proposed two separate rehabilitation components for SRA projects. While protected occupiers living in pre-2000 dwelling units will remain eligible for free rehabilitation, those found ineligible in this category are proposed to be accommodated on-site under provisions of the Centre’s Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY). While the move would blur slum cut-off deadlines, government sources admitted that permitting more buildable space to accommodate more slum-dwellers would further increase local population densities.
But for now, the chief minister has capped the rehabilitation benefit among non-protected dwellings only for residents of slums in dwelling units existing before January 1, 2011. While a formal assessment of the number of dwellings that would benefit from the move is yet to be made, sources said at least 3.5 lakh additional slum dwellings and 18 lakh slum dwellers may get accommodated.
Although post-2000 dwellings won’t be eligible for free rehabilitation, they will have to pay the construction cost for the rehabilitation home, a source said. “They will, however, be eligible for rebate offered under PMAY,” he added. Also, in the event of there being lack of space to accommodate such slum dwellers in situ, the proposal is to relocate them into PMAY houses within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said, “All residents of slums in dwelling units upto January 1, 2011 will now be entitled to rehabilitation. This was done as it was noticed that non-protected occupiers, who were evicted from the Slum Rehabilitation Area without any rehabilitation arrangement, would shift to the slum area again, defeating the goal of a slum-free city and the government’s ‘housing for all’ mission.”
Despite the law department’s objections, the legislation has also a proposal to include non-slum portions, including lands used by slum dwellers for traditional occupations, in the “slum area”. Slum projects in Mumbai’s prime areas have already turned into a goldmine for developers, who are already permitted to build anywhere between three to four times the slum area. Sources said the inclusion of non-dwelling portions in the “slum area” would further increase sale incentives for builders.
The government has set an upper limit of 45 days for slum dwellers to object to an SRA proposal. It has also proposed mandatory disclosures and registrations by developers. It also proposes to empower Chief Executive Officers (SRA) to declare a land as a slum, along with the Collector’s office. Meanwhile, land owners, whose encroached lands have been declared as slums, would get 120 days to initiate slum redevelopment plan.
Provisions have been made to acquire such lands otherwise. Sources said the legislation will also require the President’s assent for becoming a law.
Ranji Trophy 2017-18 : One of the most dramatic and emotionally-charged Ranji Trophy matches in recent memory hurtled to a pulsating finish in Kolkata as Vidarbha charged into their maiden tournament final of Ranji Trophy 2017-18 with a five-run victory over favourites and eight-time champions Karnataka.
Passionate, exhilarating and unpredictable until the very end, this match had all the ingredients that go into the making of a classic. Rajneesh Gurbani picked the ultimate stage to turn in the performance of his life – a career-best seven-for – as Karnataka folded for 192 in their second innings, ending what turned out to be the match of the season.
In Ranji Trophy 2017-18 Karnataka dominated almost every moment of the 75 minutes that the final day lasted. Shreyas Gopal (24*), Vinay Kumar (36) and Abhimanyu Mithun (33) mounted a sensational fightback as Karnataka’s experience in big-match situations prominently came through. Almost every run was shaved off the target in a clinical manner as Vidarbha watched their dream slip away. All until one critical moment of madness dashed Karnataka’s hopes and subjected them to heartbreak.
Mithun, who had dented Vidarbha the worst of all Karnataka batsmen, paid the ultimate price for his lofty ambition. With his team nine runs away, and with Vidarbha having nearly lost nearly all hope, Mithun gave them a spark in his pursuit of a glorious finish. Gurbani pitched it full outside Mithun’s off stump and the batsmen threw his hands at it as hard as he could, and sliced a catch to Akshay Sarwate at deep point.
It brought out S Aravind, Karnataka’s weakest batsman and Vidarbha’s strongest hope. Aravind managed to see off four deliveries. And then Karnataka suffered their second brain-fade of the morning. Off Umesh Yadav’s last delivery, Aravind flicked the bowler to fine leg. Shreyas Gopal, without a moment’s hesitation, crossed over for the single.
Six runs required and six balls to bowl at No.11 Aravind. It was Vidarbha’s last chance, and Faiz Fazal turned to his young hero, Gurbani. One ball later, it was all over. Gurbani shaped the first ball away from Aravind. The batsman reached out, and the resultant edge was snaffled at gully. Gurbani elatedly sank to his knees, Vidarbha’s players roared out from their dressing room, and Shreyas and Aravind were disconsolate figures as they wearily and reluctantly dragged themselves off.
Nagpur : Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and other Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders gathered and paid rich tribute to Dr K.B. Hedgewar at Smruti Mandir in Nagpur’s RSS headquarters on Wednesday. Dr. Hedgewar was the founder of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and every year BJP leaders pay tribute to him in RSS headquarters.
Nagpur : The Maharashtra government is considering a proposal requesting it to hold the monsoon session of the legislature in Nagpur, the second capital of the state, instead of Mumbai which is the norm.
As per a convention, the winter session of the state legislature is held in Nagpur, located over 800 kms away from the state Capital.
Maharashtra Parliamentary Affairs Minister Girish Bapat said the government has received a proposal requesting shifting the monsoon session to Nagpur and is “keen on implementing it”.
“The state government has received a proposal from some legislatures to hold monsoon session in Nagpur. The monsoon session generally lasts for a month. It (Holding the session in Nagpur) will help many legislatures from Vidarbha region to raise and discuss their issues. We are keen on implementing it (the proposal),” Bapat told reporters outside Assembly in Nagpur today.
The winter session of the state legislature is currently underway in Nagpur.
“The next session (of the legislature) is scheduled to be held in Mumbai, where we will discuss the possibility of holding the monsoon session in Nagpur,” Bapat said.
After Maharashtra was formed from the division of the Bombay State in 1960, it was decided to hold every winter session in Nagpur where most of the issues are expected to be regarding Vidarbha region.
“Generally, the period of monsoon session is not more than two weeks. If monsoon session is held in Nagpur, more issues related to Vidarbha could be discussed,” the minister said.
Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Wednesday played a key role in India’s biggest T20I win till date. The former India captain contributed in every department, helping the hosts register a crushing 93-run win over Sri Lanka in the 1st T20I at Cuttack’s Barabati Stadium. Not only did the wicketkeeper-batsman provide a final flourish to India’s innings with an unbeaten 39-run knock, he also went on to add four wicketkeeping dismissals taking his tally to 74. Not just that, the 36-year-old notched up three other records during the series opener against Thisara Perera’s men.
Dhoni (39 not out + 4 dismissals) became the first Indian wicketkeeper to post 35 or more runs and effect four dismissals in the same T20I, joining South Africa’s Quinton de Kock (twice) and Pakistan’s Kamran Akmal.
Dhoni is the first wicketkeeper to effect four dismissals in T20Is involving India and Sri Lanka.
Dhoni (201 dismissals in 272 matches) has become the second wicketkeeper after Kamran Akmal (207 in 211 matches) to complete 200 dismissals or more in T20 cricket.
Captain Rohit Sharma applauded Dhoni, who was promoted up the order, during the post-match presentation.”MSD (Dhoni), he’s just class. No. 4 really paid off. He’s played so many games for us, won so many games for us and moving forward, we feel making him bat at No. 4 is ideal,” Rohit said.
Dhoni’s batting record as number four player has been excellent – his aggregate being 244 in eleven innings (seven times not out), including a half century – 56 vs England at Bengaluru on February 1, 2017. His strike rate of 134.01 is quite impressive at this batting position.
“For a long period of time, MS has been finishing games off, but we want him to bat freely now, without that pressure. We were not sure what the ideal score would be, with dew and the wicket playing weirdly. So I thought 180 was a great effort,” he added.

Former chief minister Narayan Rane is expected to be inducted into the state Cabinet soon, during its proposed reshuffle. It could happen within a week, indicated sources in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), after he met Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at Nagpur on Tuesday evening.
Rane’s induction had been delayed as the Shiv Sena is dead opposed to the plan, and the BJP was in no mood for a tussle close to the Gujarat Assembly elections. The party leadership had also put on hold the proposed Cabinet reshuffle for the same reason. Now that the results are out, the reshuffle is back on the agenda for the BJP leadership in the state.
“Narayan Rane will surely be inducted into the state Cabinet. The experience of stalwart leaders like him and former revenue minister Eknath Khadse is valuable for us. The Cabinet reshuffle will happen soon,” Fadnavis told reporters on Tuesday morning. “There is no reason for the Shiv Sena to oppose Narayan Rane being part of the Cabinet as he will be inducted from the BJP quota.”
Speaking to , Narayan Rane said: “I called on the chief minister to congratulate him for his party’s victory in Gujarat elections. We discussed the reshuffle, and he said it would take place before December 31. We did not discuss the portfolio.”
Rane’s induction has been on the cards ever since he quit the Congress and floated his own political outfit as part of an understanding between him and the BJP in October.
Sources in the state government said the reshuffle may take place early next week after a final go-ahead from the BJP leadership in Delhi.
Other than Narayan Rane, a few new faces are likely to be inducted, to replace those based on their performance over the past three years. Sources said Fadnavis had discussed the matter with Prime Minister Narendra Modi when they met in Mumbai on December 14.
Nagpur: Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis said in the council on Tuesday that his government would take strict action against government officers, who held land near the proposed Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Mahamarg expressway.
The CM in his written reply, said, “There was no wrong found…where we can say that officers have bought land by roadside. But, if the opposition has any proof against them, they should give it to us. We will investigate and take action.”
MSRDC minister Eknath Shinde also said that there would not be forceful land acquisition for the project. “Around 45 per cent land is acquired till now. Almost 58 per cent of the people have given it in written. The land measurement work in 380 villages out of 392 is completed,” said Mr Shinde.
Congress MLC Husnbanu Khalife has raised the question. “There are allegations against few officers who have bought huge land on the road side of Samruddhi Mahamarg. If this is true then it is shocking,” Ms Khalife said. The CM denied any such thing saying that it has not come to the notice of state government. Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) minister Mr Shinde also denied the allegations.
Opposition leader Dhananjay Munde intervened during debate and asked about FIRs being lodged against protesters. “Is it true that Baban Harne who is leading the agitation against land acquisition for the project is being harassed by police?” he asked. Mr Shinde clarified that complaint against Mr Harne is not for protest. “He was booked for buying land from farmers in cheap rates,” Mr Shinde said.
The 705-km Samruddhi Mahamarg is CM Fadnavis’s pet project connecting Mumbai to Nagpur. The project costs approximately Rs 46,000 crore of Rs 36,000 crore will come as debt from a South Korean bank. Mr Shinde said that the government has distributed Rs 2,300 crore to farmers who gave their land for the project.
Nagpur: Senior NCP leader Sunil Tatkare questioned the absence of Secretary-level officers of various ministries during a special discussion on the issue of farmers in the Legislative Council.
“We brought this (absence of secretaries) to the notice of the chief minister during the business advisory meeting (and told him) that the concerned administrative officers should be present during important discussions,” Tatkare told the Upper House.
In his reply, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Girish Bapat (BJP) promised action against the absentees.
“It was decided that the concerned secretary or deputy secretary should remain present during important discussions in legislature,” he said.
Bapat said a list of absentee officers will be handed over to the Chairman of the Upper House and a show cause letter seeking their explanation over absence will be issued. The winter session of the state legislature is currently underway in Nagpur.
