Annual gold demand soars to a new decade high in 2022
The World Gold Council’s latest Gold Demand Trends report reveals that annual gold demand (excluding OTC) in 2022 increased by 18% year-on-year, hitting 4,741t – the highest annual total since 2011. Boosted by a record fourth quarter, demand for gold was propelled by hefty central bank-buying and persistently strong retail investment.
Annual central bank demand more than doubled to 1,136t in 2022, up from 450t the year before and to a new 55-year record high. Purchases in Q4 2022 alone reached 417t, bringing the total for the second half of 2022 to more than 800t.
Investment demand (excluding OTC) in 2022 was up 10% on the previous year. The increase was the result of two factors: a notable slowdown in ETF outflows and strong gold bar and coin demand.
Gold bars and coins continued to hold favour with investors in several countries around the world, which helped to offset weakness in China. Total European gold bar and coin investment for 2022 surpassed 300t, aided by persistently robust German demand. There was also significant growth in the Middle East, where annual demand increased by 42% year-on-year.
Jewellery demand softened slightly in 2022, down 3% at 2,086t. This weakness was largely driven by the marked drop in Chinese annual jewellery demand, down 15% as consumer activity was curtailed by ongoing COVID-19 lockdowns for most of the year. The gold price rally in Q4 also contributed to the annual decline in jewellery demand.
Total annual supply in 2022 continued its gentle upwards trajectory, up by 2% y-o-y to 4,755t and remaining above pre-pandemic levels. In particular, mine production increased to 3,612t – a four year high.
Louise Street, Senior Markets Analyst from the World Gold Council, commented: “Last year we saw the highest level of annual gold demand in over a decade, driven in part by colossal central bank demand for the safe haven asset. Gold’s diverse demand drivers played a balancing act as rising interest rates prompted some tactical ETF outflows, while elevated inflation spurred on gold bar and coin investment. In the end, overall investment demand was up 10% on the previous year.
“Turning to 2023, economic forecasts are pointing to a challenging environment and a likely global recession which could lead to a role reversal in gold investment trends. If inflation comes down, this could be a headwind for gold bar and coin investment. Conversely, continued weakening of the US dollar and the moderating pace of interest rate hikes could have positive implications for gold-backed ETF demand.
We will likely see jewellery consumption remain resilient, bolstered by a release of pent-up demand as China re-opens; but possibly dragged down by the squeeze on consumer spending if there is a more severe downturn. While there are several possible outcomes, gold has a precedent for performing well in turbulent economic times, highlighting its value as a long-term, strategic asset.”

Budget 2023: There will be no income tax up to ₹7 lakh, announced Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the Union Budget 2023 on Wednesday.
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, while presenting Union Budget 2023-24 in Parliament today, said the income tax rebate has been extended on income up to ₹7 lakh under the new tax regime, up from ₹5 lakh so far. The FM also announced there will not be any new tax for income up to ₹3 lakh.
According to the finance minister, the five major announcements in income tax will benefit India’s “hard-working middle class”. “The first one concerns rebate. Currently, those with income up to ₹5 lakh do not pay any income tax in both old and new tax regimes. I propose to increase the rebate limit to ₹7 lakh in the new tax regime. Thus, persons in the new tax regime, with income up to ₹7 lakh will not have to pay any tax,” she said.
She also proposed to change the tax structure in the personal income tax regime by reducing the number of slabs and increasing the tax exemption limit to ₹3 lakh. “The new tax rates are 0 to ₹3 lakh – nil, ₹3 to 6 lakh – 5%, ₹6 to 9 lakh – 10%, ₹9 to 12 lakh – 15%, ₹12 to 15 lakh – 20% and above ₹15 lakh – 30%, ” Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said during her speech in Parliament.
Australia Player Khawaja misses flight to India after visa delay
Australia opener Usman Khawaja missed the team’s flight to India on Wednesday for their four-Test tour due to a visa delay, Cricket Australia (CA) said.
A Cricket Australia spokesman said the Pakistan-born batter was the only player in Australia’s squad not to board because his visa had not arrived in time.
Khawaja posted a popular meme on social media of a man sitting on a garden chair staring into space, with the caption: “Me waiting for my Indian Visa like… #stranded #dontleaveme #standard #anytimenow.”
Cricket Australia expect the visa to arrive later on Wednesday and said Khawaja had been booked on a flight out on Thursday.
Some team support staff are also flying out on Thursday.

IAF’s Sukhoi-30 and Mirage aircraft crash in Madhya Pradesh
A Sukhoi-30 and Mirage 2000 aircraft crashed near Morena in Madhya Pradesh on Saturday. Search and rescue operations have been launched, informed Defence sources.
The two aircraft had taken off from the Gwalior air base in Madhya Pradesh where an exercise was going on.
According to the sources, the Sukhoi-30 MKI had two pilots while the Mirage had one during the crash that occurred in the bordering area of Morena and Bharatpur (Rajasthan). One fighter jet fell in Bharatpur and the other one in Morena.

Flipkart hosts the fourth edition of ‘Crafted by Bharat’ on 74th Republic Day to support Indian artisans
Bengaluru – January 25, 2023: Flipkart, India’s homegrown e-commerce marketplace, today announced the fourth edition of the Flipkart Samarth ‘Crafted by Bharat’ event which will be held from January 26-27 this year in honor of India’s 74th Republic Day. The event will celebrate India’s rich culture of handicrafts and handlooms by featuring over 100,000 products from more than 300 art forms across the country.
The goal of ‘Crafted By Bharat’ is to provide Indian craftsmen and weavers with a platform to be recognised and showcase their commendable craftsmanship that has preserved our nation’s culture and traditions. The products available as part of this event exemplify both art and history, and support the artists who earn a livelihood from selling their products. Flipkart will also have a dedicated storefront on the platform for the event, under which products by women sellers will be specifically highlighted, to honor the distinctiveness that women sellers bring to the table.
As part of the celebration of India’s rich cultural heritage, the event will bring people closer to works of art such as ‘Rajasthani furniture’ which is intricately crafted by Rajasthani artisans, and ‘Dokra Art’ which is an embodiment of the deeply held beliefs and values of the tribal community and their sacred form of art, ‘Bamboo Jewelry’ which is a singular fusion of nature and art, ‘Tant Saree’ which represents the state of West Bengal’s ancient crafting tradition and affluent fashion, ‘Khadi’ and ‘Kalamkari’ that represents Bharat and its rooted art forms.
