Nagpur : Recently, a Free Hearing Assessment Camp was held at Orange City Hospital and Research Institute(OCHRI), Nagpur for the benefit of needy children having hearing deficit. Large number of patients from central India took the benefit of this camp. Ms. Neelu Somani, renowned Cochlear Implant Audiologist assisted by Mr. Chandrashekhar Borkar, ASM, RESOUND and Mr. Ashish Dhapke, ASM, COCHLEAR rendered their expert services in this camp.  At the outset, camp was inaugurated at the hands of Dr. Anup Marar- OCHRI Director. Dr. Deepak Dongre- OCHRI Medical Superintendent was coordinator of the camp.

On this occasion, Dr. Vidya Nair- Director(Grants), Ravi Nair Hospitals Private Limited expressed that, “Under the name and style of ‘Project Geeta; OCHRI is regularly conducting Cochlear Implant Surgeries for benefit of Children having hearing impairment since last four years. Orange City Hospital & Research Institute is first hospital to introduce Cochlear Implant Surgeries to Central India. Tata Trust and Chief Minister Relief fund are supporting financially poor disadvantaged children. As of now, more than 125 children took the benefit of this facility at OCHRI.

Ms. Nilu Somani informed that, “Hearing is critical to speech and language development, communication, learning, and literacy. As such, it is essential to have an audiology evaluation while the child is growing to avoid hearing loss in the child. Childhood hearing loss can be congenital, delayed onset, acquired or progressive in nature. Furthermore, mild hearing loss cannot normally be identified through a routine hearing screening due to the limitations of the testing equipment – and the methodology of testing used. An early hearing evaluation can lessen the chances of having complications with even speech loss in a hearing impaired child. With the advancement of newer technologies, now a day, hearing impairment is correctable. Parent might suspect a hearing loss much before an expert does. So parents need to take their child to an expert audiologist as early as possible to help them enjoy an active and complete lifestyle.”

Smt. Priya Khobragade, Sr. Prashita Dive and Smt. Sunita Choudhary worked hard for
the success of this camp.
