Holika Dahan (Chhoti Holi) 2025: A Festival of victory and Purification

Date:

As the winter months melt away, Indians get ready to welcome one of the most auspicious festivals, Holi. The festivities are preceded by the holy act of Holika Dahan, signifying the perpetual victory of good over evil. In 2025, Holika Dahan 2025 falls on Thursday, March 13, thus making way for the festive hue celebration of colors, Rangwali Holi, which falls the very next day.

Holika Dahan Story

Holika Dahan celebration has its origins in the ancient Hindu legend of Prahlad, a devoted follower of Lord Vishnu, and his tyrannical father, King Hiranyakashipu, who wanted to be worshipped as a god. In anger over Prahlad’s refusal to change his devotion to Vishnu, Hiranyakashipu hatched a plan with his sister Holika, who had a boon that made her immune to fire. Holika tricked Prahlad to sit on her lap in a blazing pyre, in which she would burn him to death. Yet, by God’s grace, Holika got burnt in that fire, whereas Prahlad remained unscathed because of his faith and righteousness. This was a story of good triumphing over evil and has become the foundation for the Holika Dahan, which is celebrated by fire brandishing people who were reminded of the victory of devotion and virtue to arrogance and wickedness.

Avoid Harmful Practices: Do not encourage playing with firecrackers or dangerous fire rituals that may harm the environment or participants.
