First Time Allogenic Bone Marrow Transplant at Wockhardt Cancer Institute

Nagpur: A leading healthcare provider has performed the first Allogenic Bone Marrow transplant at Wockhardt Cancer Institute Nagpur. It has proved as a boon for the adjoining cities of Nagpur. A 19-year-old girl from the small town of Paratwada in Amravati district of Maharashtra came with a complaint of weakness and was found to have low blood counts, she was eventually diagnosed with severe aplastic anaemia.  Aplastic anemia is a rare but serious blood condition that occurs when your bone marrow cannot make enough new blood cells for your body to work normally.

Dr. Gunjan Loney, Haematologist and Heamato-oncologist at Wockhardt Hospitals, Nagpur said, “Her bone marrow was affected, the only curative treatment option for her was bone marrow transplantation. “Allogenic Bone marrow Transplant uses healthy bone marrow from a donor to replace bone marrow that’s not producing enough healthy blood cells. In BMT, conditioning destroys the defective marrow, which is followed by infusion of the bone marrow (graft) from an HLA-matched sibling or unrelated donor. The chances of finding a HLA-matched sibling donor are only 25%. Fortunately, her 21-year-old brother’s bone marrow was found to be matching.

Allogenic Bone Marrow Transplant is the most likely curative treatment option for SAA and should be the upfront therapeutic option of choice for young patients. The outcome of Allogenic Bone Marrow Transplant has improved remarkably during the last decade because of improvements in all aspects of transplantation, including supportive care. This will open doors for patients with blood cancer and other hematological disorders. Presently, the patient is doing well and has been discharged on day 28 in stable condition.

Dr Gunjan Loney complimented the entire Wockhardt Hospitals, Nagpur BMT team including staff, junior doctors, attendants and administration.“This procedure is highly advanced treatment. The success of bone marrow transplant at our institute will provide new hope to the patients of blood cancer and other Haematological disorders.”, said Dr. Gunjan Loney.

Mr. Abhinandan  Dastenavar, Center Head, Wockhardt Hospitals said, ” We are happy that we serve common people as they have  access to all advanced treatments available in Nagpur that too at our hospital.”

Basilar Artery Fusiform Aneurysm – Once Incurable – Treated Successfully Using Novel Flow Diversion Technology

Nagpur : Wockhardt Hospitals Nagpur, a leading health care provider, successfully treated a patient with once incurable Basilar Artery Fusiform Aneurysm with novel flow diversion technology avoiding a major surgery of the brain. This was one of a kind procedure which avoided a major surgery and also saved the life of patient.

Mr RM, a 36 years old male experienced a sudden and excruciating headache while at home during Diwali vacations. The pain was the worst headache of his life often described as thunderclap headache in medical literature.  Investigation with a CT brain showed that he had developed subarachnoid brain hemorrhage which is a life threatening illness as 20-30% patients don’t even make it to the hospital. A subarachnoid hemorrhage means that there is bleeding in the space that surrounds the brain.

To complicate the matter further, the patient developed seizures and hydrocephalus and was in a near comatose state when he reached hospital. Hydrocephalus is the buildup of fluid in cavities called ventricles deep within the brain. The excess fluid increases the size of the ventricles and puts pressure on the brain.

On arrival at Wockhardt hospital Nagpur, Dr. Amit Bhatti, who is a leading interventional neurologist and stroke specialist in town did an emergency brain digital subtraction angiography which is used in various forms of acute diseases and injuries of the brain. It showed that there was a fusiform aneurysm (bulging in the wall of the blood vessel) in the middle of the basilar artery. Couple of decades back this would have been a death sentence for the patient because the location of the aneurysm makes it almost impossible to operate surgically and even endovascular treatment becomes a challenge because of the shape.

However, Dr. Bhatti pointed out that due to recent advances in interventional neurology & development of devices like flow diverter stent these disorders are now easily treatable. As per Dr Bhatti, flow diverter stent is a special stent with very high mesh density that allows redirection of the blood flow away from the aneurysm sac thereby allowing the aneurysm to heal and thus enabling treatment of these rare types of aneurysms which were previously incurable.

Dr. Amit Bhatti is M.D. D.M. (Neuro) D.N.B (Neuro) FINS (Interventional Neurology & Stroke) Consultant – Interventional Neurologist, and with his expertise did this entire procedure  through a needle sized puncture of the artery of the leg without any surgery of the skull.

Mr. Abhinandan Dastenavar , Centre Head, Wockhardt Hospitals Nagpur said, ” Our doctors have once again proved their expertise and avoided a major surgery and helped save a life .

Innovative Angioplasty – Another First in Central India by Dr. Nitin Tiwari

8th November 2023: Wockhardt Hospitals Nagpur a leading health care hospital in  Central India has done it again. A first of its kind innovative angioplasty was done and saved the life of a 69 year old male patient.

A 69 yrs old hypertensive, diabetic gentleman with heart attack came to Wockhardt Hospitals, Nagpur and was seen by Dr. Nitin Tiwari (Sr. Interventional Cardiologist). The patient had undergone Angioplasty at Lucknow in 2011. He had recurrent angina (chest pain) and hence Dr. Nitin Tiwari did his coronary angiography which revealed 100% blockage in the old stent. This stent was a first generation (old type stent) which got blocked.  The patient also had one more block in LAD which was stented. Dr. Nitin Tiwari decided to do Angioplasty and stenting of the old blocked stent. Hard wires were used to cross the block. Balloons were used to inflate the block and one of the balloons got ruptured which lead to perforation (hole) in the middle artery of the heart. This is a serious life threatening complication seen in around 0.5% of angioplasties.

Dr. Nitin Tiwari did prolonged dilatation with balloon and treated it. Then he dilated the blocked stent with two drug eluting balloons (DEB) for 60 seconds each in the blocked stent and then put a covered stent (made up of fabric or PTFE) in the area of the hole (perforation).

Dr. Nitin Tiwari, said the disadvantage of covered stents is that 30% of them got reblocked  within 6-12 months but by using it with DEB the reblockage chances  can be reduced to <5%. This was a novel way of using a DEB + covered stent in a medicated stent which got occluded. DEB’s can also be used for diffuse disease, small branches etc.

Dr. Nitin Tiwari a dedicated professional took the challenge and stood against all adversities and did the innovative angioplasty with determination that saved the life of patient. At a time it was a crucial point where he took bold decision and the performed the angioplasty. This is the first ever case done in Central India and it involved innovative thinking and bold decision making during the procedure.

Dr. Nitin Tiwari is attached to Wockhardt Hospitals since last 20 years. A compassionate , sincere and dedicated professional Dr. Tiwari has to his credit more than 25000 interventions in complex Angioplasty. He is the only person in India to have done three consecutive IVL , a hattrick   to his credit. This one is another feather in his cap and also a proud moment for Wockhardt Hospitals Nagpur. The patient is doing well and has been discharged.

Dr. Abhinandan Dastenavar , Center Head, Wockhardt Hospitals Nagpur, said, “This was really a challenging case. But our doctor expert team did it very accurately and the patient was saved.  Our expert doctor team need to be applauded for this. We are grateful to our doctor team and all the staff for their contribution which has made the hospital rose to pinnacle and made us feel proud. Here at Wockhardt Hospitals, Life Wins always.”

This World Diabetes Day Help Manage Diabetes With a Handful of Almonds!

INDIA : As World Diabetes Day rolls around on November 14th, 2023, global attention is drawn to the escalating epidemic of diabetes. India, in particular, finds itself at the epicenter of this crisis, bearing the moniker of the ‘Diabetes Capital‘ of the world. This year’s World Diabetes Day emphasizes the significance of understanding one’s risk for Type 2 diabetes, aiming to prevent or delay the onset of the condition. In that regard, regular consumption of almonds is found to reverse prediabetes.

Recent studies 3-4 highlight that consuming 20g of almonds 30 minutes before meals can improve blood sugar levels in some individuals. It was also found that 23.3% (7 out of 30) of prediabetes patients returned to normal blood sugar levels after consuming almonds (20g) before meals. While another study 5 reveals that consuming almond daily for 12 weeks reduced insulin resistance, fasting glucose, and improved pancreatic function. Additionally, daily almond intake resulted in significant weight loss, a decrease in BMI (body mass index), waist circumference, and a reduction in total cholesterol. These nuts have a low glycemic index and contain nutrients such as protein, dietary fiber, good fats, vitamin E, magnesium, and potassium. As a result, they’re an ideal snack for individuals with prediabetes. Truly, the goodness and health benefits of almonds cannot be undermined.

A recent study 2 conducted by Madras Diabetes Research Foundation and Indian Council of Medical Research estimates that more than a million of the nation’s population are battling diabetes. The study also estimates that 136 million of India’s citizens might be on the cusp of developing diabetes, a condition termed as pre-diabetes. The greater concern however is that nearly half remain undiagnosed.

Leading Bollywood actress and celebrity, Soha Ali Khan mentioned, Amidst the fast-paced world we live in, diabetes has silently crept into many lives, largely due to our sedentary habits and less-than-ideal dietary choices. As we approach World Diabetes Day, I strongly advocate for everyone not only to keep an eye on their blood sugar levels but to also evaluate their daily habits and make changes where necessary. It is important to opt for portion-controlled, nutritious meals over indulgent, high-fat ones. Choose an active life over a sedentary one. Sometimes, it’s as simple as opting for a handful of almonds instead of reaching for a pack of crisps. Almonds pack in so many nutrients – from protein to vitamin E to magnesium. It’s these little, consistent choices that carve out the path to long-term health.
