Nagpur: The Nagpur University would be conferring over 77,000 degrees at its 109th convocation on Wednesday. However, this would be the third year in a row that fewer postgraduate degrees will be awarded to students than the preceding year. At the 107th convocation, 13,037 PG degrees were awarded, which fell to 11,514 at the 108th, and 10,846 in 109th, as per the statistics provided by RTMNU officials.
On the other hand, the number of graduates has marginally reduced by just 45 as compared to the last ceremony. Their numbers had jumped from 50,936 in 107th convocation to 65,345 in 108th event. Even PhD numbers have reduced substantially, from 867 last year to 531 this year. Overall, the total degrees have reduced by 534 to 77,378 as compared to last convocation.
RTMNU would be bestowing the prestigious Doctor of Letters (DLitt) to Dayaram Lalwani in the humanities faculty at Wednesday’s ceremony at Suresh Bhatt auditorium that would be chaired by chancellor Bhagat Singh Koshyari while higher education minister Uday Samant would be the chief guest. The university will award 189 medals and prizes to 110 meritorious students, including 151 gold and nine silver. While the gold medals have reduced by nine in comparison to last convocation, prizes increased by ten.
Among top six medal winners, there is no boy, which is perhaps the first such instance in the university’s history, said RTMNU officials. Aparajita Gupta from RTMNU Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Law College bagged the highest number of eight golds and two prizes for topping BALLB (Five years) course. She is followed by Arzoo Baig from GH Raisoni Institute of Information Technology for emerging first merit in the MBA course.
Government Institute of Science’s Nidhi Sahu won four golds and one silver for scoring highest marks in MSc (Chemistry). Shubhangi Dhargave from PWS College clinched four golds and one silver for topping MA (Marathi). Shriya Nandgawali from RTMNU Dr Ambedkar Thought Department won an equal number of medals and prizes for topping MA along with Rupali Hiwase from RTMNU Postgraduate Department of Education for MEd course. All of them have emerged as the highest scorers among RTMNU students from over 500 colleges spread across Wardha, Bhandara, Gondia and Nagpur.
VC refuses to answer exam related queries
RTMNU VC Subhash Chaudhari, who is already under the scanner for a series of flip-flops on the examinations issue, refused to answer queries on the issue during a press meet on Monday. After being questioned by the media on various demands of the students, he said he will speak to them at a later stage. Exam director Prafulla Sable had already made it clear that RTMNU would not provide any question bank to the students, even after an assurance given in this regard by the minister. The students complained that their syllabus was not completed due to online teaching and it was not clear from which part of the books the questions would be asked.
