Nagpur Celebration of Karwa Chauth

Date:

Karwa Chauth or Karva Chauth is a significant festival for Hindu women who are married or are of marriageable age. It is a reflection of the rich Indian culture and value systems ingrained in the society. It adds to the rich values of selflessness, social and moral ethics of India.

They observe a day-long nirjala fast (without food or water) for the safety and long life of their husbands. Unmarried women celebrate this festival for their prospective grooms. They break the fast only after offering prayers to the moon.
The festival falls on the fourth day after the full moon, in the Hindu lunisolar calendar month of Kartik.

Women adorn themselves in beautiful clothes and apply henna on their hands. They also sing songs and narrate folk tales around Karwa Chauth. They receive sargior pre-dawn meal from their mothers-in-law to bless their daughters-in-law for a happy and blissful marriage. It consists of sweets, savouries, dry fruits, coconut, matthri, feni and other gifts like sarees, jewellery and others.

“We are doing Karva Chouth’s Katha and pooja from more than last 30 years in our premises at Buddha nagar. Suhagans & unmarried girls from different castes & culture come & attend this Katha, said Ms. Geeta choudhry.

She further added, the ladies sit in a circle to listen to katha & sing the following song while rotating the thalis containing Baya. The song, “Veero Kudiya Karwada, Sarv Suhagana Karwada, Aye Katti Naa Teri Naa, Khumbh Chrakhra Feri Naa, Gwand Pair Payeen Naa, Sui cha Dhaga Payi Naa, Ruthada maniyen Naa, Suthra Jagayeen Naa, Bahaein Pyari Veera, Chand Chadde te Pani Peena, Lay Veero kuriye Karwara, Lay Sarv Suhagan Karwara…….” Is sung by all the beautiful ladies. This stanza is sung 6 times. It is repeated till all the thalis (plates) has been through each other hand in the circle and everyone has their own thali.

“I am celebrating Karva Chouth from the first year of my marriage, I eagerly wait for this day & moment, the fast and katha further intensifies love & sacrifice for my husband & my family” said Ms. Heinu Gidwani.
