The problem with Android is that updates are usually dictated by the company that makes your phones, meaning that if and when an update comes to your phone is at the discretion of the manufacturer. However the good news is that if you are planning on buying a Nokia phone or have an existing phone, you’ll be covered.
HMD Global has confirmed that all phones released by the company will be updated to Android P. This will include the Nokia 1 up to the Nokia 8 Sirocco and anything in between. Prior to this, back in October 2017 HMD already stated that all existing phones would be getting Android P, but this latest confirmation suggests that the update will cover all recently launched phones as well.
Of course the question is how long can HMD keep this up? After all the company has a significantly smaller portfolio compared to more established manufacturers, so whether or not they’ll be able to maintain this momentum for the foreseeable future remains to be seen, but for now we reckon it’s a pretty good start.
As it stands Android fragmentation is an issue as it means that most Android users only get to enjoy the update anywhere from half a year up to a year after it is released. This is why Android’s distribution stats always show that older versions of Android tend to have a greater market share than the latest release.
Moreover, HMD CPO Juho Sarivikas also confirmed that the Nokia 8 will get the Pro Camera mode after the next update that rolls out this Friday, June 1.
To recall, HMD Global has launched the new Nokia 2.1, Nokia 3.1, and Nokia 5.1 at an event held in Moscow on Tuesday.
