Indian wrestler Rahul Aware won gold in the men’s 57-kilogram category at the 21st Commonwealth Games (CWG) here on Thursday. Aware overpowered Steven Takahashi of Canada 15-7 in the final.
This gold is worth more than one could ever imagine for Rahul, given the circumstances due to which he missed out on 2016 Rio Olympics. A 2011 Gold medalist in the Commonwealth Wrestling Championships, it was Rahul’s debut appearance in the Commonwealth Games. Rahul earned his spot in the Indian contingent by defeating Sandeep Tomar back in December 2017.
Sushil Kumar wins Gold in men’s freestyle 74kg wrestling
India’s most prolific wrestler Sushil Kumar wins the gold medal in men’s freestyle 74kg wrestling event at Commonwealth Games 2018. This is second gold for Indian boxers in Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games after Rahul Aware won in men’s freestyle 57kg category on April 12.
Two-time Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar gave an inspiring performance to lift the spirit of Indian contingent participating in Gold Coast Games. The defending champion defeated Johannes Botha of South Africa to take India’s medal tally in CWG 2018 to 29 including 14 gold, 6 silver and 9 bronze.
Indian wrestler Babita Kumari took silver
Meanwhile, Indian wrestler Babita Kumari took silver in the women’s 53-kilogram category. Babita had to settle for a silver medal after losing to Canadian Diana Weicker in Women’s Freestyle 53 kg Nordic wrestling. Another medal came from Kiran who defeated the Katouskia Pariadhaven of Mauritius in the Women’s Freestyle 76 kg Bronze Medal.
