The sale of kites and manja is increasing as the Festival of Kites approaches. To put a comprehensive ban on the lethal nylon manja, the Nagpur police asked for assistance from the public. The police established a mobile hotline (9823300100) to solicit information directly from the public regarding the sale of illicit nylon manja.
In addition to this, the public can reach the police by dialling the 100 or 112 emergency numbers.
According to a senior police official, police teams would undertake raids on store owners selling nylon manja throughout the city after getting personal information from locals.
Meanwhile,Tehsil and Shanti Nagar police teams conducted separate raids at two places in the city and collectively seized 658 nylon manja reels and arrested five persons.
The Tehsil police seized 120 reels of Nylon Manja and arrested three persons from Gandhibagh market.
The accused have been identified as Rakesh Punitram Sonboir (25), a resident of Plot No. 9, Bajrang Chowk, Bhavani Nagar, Pardi; Neeraj Kishore Baralia (25), a resident of Balaji Nagar and Gaurav Balkrishna Kumbhre (23), a resident of Marar Toli.
Acting on a tip-off, the police team raided the shop of the accused in Sut Market area
on Saturday and seized the Nylon Manja worth Rs 72,000. The cops also seized an Activa moped (MH- 49/AD-2433) from the accused.
A case under Section Sections 5, 14 of The Environment (Protection) Act read with Section 188 of Indian Penal Code was reg- istered against the accused.
Shanti Nagar police seized 658 manja reels collectively worth Rs 2.18 lakh from a Mini Truck and arrested two persons in this connection. The accused have been iden- tified as Habib Sheikh Rafique Sheikh (20), a resi- dent of Itwari and Rajesh Prabhu Dhurwe (30), a resi- dent of Bhaldarpura.
The Mini truck was also seized by the police. Truck driver Kalyani and his accom- plice Sonu are absconding, police said.
